Mark is arguably the most successful and most renowned professional Walleye fisherman from the entire state of Michigan. Mark is going to conduct a seminar that should last approximately one hour. His seminar is going to be on trolling Lake Saint Clair. Specifically, he is going to touch on the effectiveness of trolling body baits on Lake St. Clair. And even more specifically than that, he is going to spend a considerable amount of time speaking about the fishing success that can be had while trolling body baits on Lake Saint Clair at night time. Here in our great state of Michigan many regard Mark Martin as Mr. Walleye at night. He has earned this nickname by averaging more than 600 Walleye per year in the 6 to 12 pound range. The key to Marks success is a history of walleye fishing developed over three generations of Martins. He intends to share some of his expertise and nighttime tactics to all of those in attendance. Some of Mark Martins career achievements include the following: -Qualified for 18 Professional Walleye Trail Championships -World Champion of the first PWT championship held in 1990. -Currently 43 top 10 finishes in AIM, PWT, MWC, tournaments and Governor Cups. -Over 24 years of professional tournament fishing. -The most PWT championships since its inception in 1990 -Has fished in over 200 major tournaments. -Currently is the 8th highest money earner among those fishing the professional Walleye circuit. These are just a few of the seemingly never-ending list of career highlights owned by Mark Martin. Quite frankly, there are just simply too many to list them all. Mark Martin has also accumulated a rather fine list of extraordinary sponsors. Some of these sponsors are illustrious companies such as Navionics, Church Tackle, Abu Garcia, Berkley, Plano, Fenwick, Northland, Daiichi, Motorguide, Lowrance, Rapala, Lund, Mercury and Optima just to name a few. By now, you get the idea. This is an excellent guest speaker. Not the type that everyone can sit and listen to on just any ole day of the week. This is going to be a special meeting, so please do not miss it. And take this advice; if you want to make sure you get a seat, make sure you get there early. There is a good chance that this will probably be a standing room only type of crowd. Our meetings get called to order at 7:30 so don’t be late. I cannot wait to see you all there! dedicated to the preservation of michigan’s walleye fishery (since July, 1976)

In June of 1982 our club collected back issues of the outdoor magazines that members brought to the meetings and distributed them to local area hospital waiting rooms. Homer “Mr. Muskie” LeBlanca was our guest speaker at the March 1985 General Membership meeting. On 5-5-1985, young Brian Lamphier caught a 15” walleye with a red crawler harness while fishing on Lake St. Clair.

Professional walleye angler Mark Martin is going to be our guest this month and we’re featuring some of the tools he has used to make his career so successful. We will have some Church planer boards, lures he recommends and what would a fishing raffle be without at least 1 or 2 rod and reel combos? A few other boating items will also be on hand as we gear up for spring from our winter (or non-winter) of discontent! My wife, Marialanina, and I would like to thank everyone for their continued support at the merchandise raffle table. We’d love to hear your suggestions or comments. If there is an addition item, fishing or not necessarily fishing related, you think club members would desire to see on the table, please feel free to let us know. Thank you, Rich and Marialaina

This month, I was thinking about what subject to write my article about. It took a little bit of thinking. But finally I made up my mind. I would like to challenge every member in our club, to make it a point to fish at least one of our monthly derbies. Win or lose? Who cares! It really doesn’t matter. I fish these derbies mostly just to put fish in my freezer. And talking fishing with the other club members is always welcomed. When I fish a derby, I come home very relaxed and the bonus is fish in my freezer. It is one of the most pleasant ways to spend a weekend. And then there is the weigh in. Again, win or lose? Who cares? But it is nice to win once in a while. If you are lucky enough to catch a fish, than bring it to the weigh in. If you do not catch any fish but still show up at the weigh in, then the real fun starts. All you have to do is show up. We always have food. Maybe pizza? Or hot dogs and freedom fries? Or broasted chicken? It is always a welcomed surprise. And then there is the comradery of being around people that share the same interests. You will definitely walk away with the freshest fishing reports around. Maybe find out about a new technique? A new fishing lure? Who knows? The opportunities are endless. We have five monthly derbies starting out in April and ending at the August picnic. Please put these events on your calendar and make it a point to fish them. Or just show up to chit-chat a little bit about fishing. That is always welcomed.

This past weekend I figured that I would have the lake to myself for a change.

And what to my eyes do I catch with my gaze, a small little flat bottom with trollers plugging away.

When I saw them flip a fish I knew right away these two bundled anglers were Masters at play.

They plucked the fish so fast and with ease, I knew that my company must be on the fishy’s.This is the spot that they dredged for their gold.

They worked so adeptly that they did not look too cold.Once they bagged their limit they packed up in a flash,

started the primary and were off with a dash. The little flat bottom and anglers swept away,

with wishes of “good luck” to me in my sleigh. It is visions like this that make winter so sweet, to know that the spring will soon be at our feet.

So Fish away, fish away, fish away all. And thank goodness for this January thaw!

This photo was taken Sunday morning January 8. We ended our morning with 7 nice eater walleye. Six males and 1 nice 23” female. The two photographed had a nice mess of fish with one going over 8#. Think spring!

thank you denny LantzyBy Scott Hunt

The night of January 18th was our General Membership meeting, and our guest speaker was none other than Denny Lantzy. Denny gave an informative and educational seminar in which he spoke for about an hour, and the audience of over 200 members and guests gave Denny their undivided attention. His seminar covered ice fishing on Lake Saint Clair and Lake Simcoe. Denny was extremely thorough and touched on every aspect of ice fishing from first ice until last ice. He spoke about all of the equipment and tackle he uses, as well as the importance of attention to detail. Afterwards, Denny hung around for a little while and answered questions from the inquisitive members off to the side of the meeting hall. Denny stayed until it was very late in the evening, and took the time to answer each and every question in a very professional manner. I can honestly say that it was my pleasure to work with Denny and schedule him as our guest speaker. And I hope that I am given the opportunity to work with him again one day. I would be honored to see him as our guest speaker again in the future. In short, the January meeting was an outstanding meeting. And Mr. Lantzy played a huge part in making that possible. So on behalf of the Lake St. Clair Walleye Association, I would like to say Thank you Denny Lantzy.

We enjoy some good fishing stories and fellowship with other club members. So, I know what you’re thinking, “How can I help”? Well it’s easy, see me at the meetings or call me @ 810.513.7754 and sign up.

uLtIMate FISHInG SHOW WaS a Great SuCCeSS

By Ron Sharp

I want to thank everyone who helped to make the show a great success again this year. We added a lot of new things to the booth and all the pictures on the display board were last year events. We sold 300 motor raffle tickets and got 6 new members and that’s what we are trying to do. We gave every boy and girl a crawler harness and asked them to drop us a line to let us know what they caught with them and it should be interesting to see the responses. Thanks again for the help and please give Bob Barnes the same support for the Texas Holdem events he has coming up.

WHen I FIrSt Met BOB GaLvInBy Rich Benson

I attended my first LSCWA Christmas party in 2008, we were at Gino’s then and the dinner was excellent. It was a packed house and it seemed like every member had brought their favorite dish or dessert, including us. We had brought some homemade oatmeal cookies, and Bob liked them so much he hung out by the table until I came to retrieve the platter. He told me he had been standing there for nearly 30 minutes waiting for the owner of the platter to come forward just so he could get that recipe! We chatted for a few minutes and had a laugh or two, he was such a nice guy I knew I had to share the recipe with him, he wouldn’t let me not!

Rest in peace Bob

Here is the recipe for the cookies Bob enjoyed:

1/2 cup butter, room temp3/4 cup firmly packed brown sugar1/2 cup sugar3 eggs, room temp2 teaspoons Kahlua (vanilla works, but who doesn’t like Kahlua?)1 1/2 cups flour1 teaspoon baking soda1 teaspoon ground cinnamon3 cups oatmeal (quick cooking kind or old-fashioned)1 package Nestle cinnamon chips1 6 oz. package of dried cranberries1/2 to 1 cup chopped walnuts, optional Beat butter and sugars till creamy, add Kahlua and eggs, beat well. Add flour, baking soda cinnamon, mix well. Add oats, cranberries and cinnamon chips, mix well. If mixture is too dry, add 1 more egg.Bake at 350 degrees for 8-10 minutes, or golden brown.

GMBBy Don Murray

Believe it or not, spring is almost here. In a couple of weeks we can be boat fishing. This has been a very mild winter to say the least, which bodes well for our open water fisheries.

With that thought in mind, I would like to remind everyone of the upcoming club and private tournaments scheduled for this year. Look on the club web page and newsletters for dates, times, and locations for these tournaments. I have one more tournament to add to the list, the Golden Minnow Bucket, (GMB). The bucket was lost last year to the gentlemen from the DWF. The DWF beat our club in every category such as biggest, heaviest, walleye and steelhead.

We will require many club members and boats this year to gain our reputation back as a fishing club. The GMB is scheduled for Aug 4, 2012, at Erieau Canada. Details will be in upcoming newsletters, so mark your calendars. We need the bucket back in our hands, this is where it belongs!

L.e.d. ball caps for night fishing! With one of the notorious night walleye fishermen speaking at this month’s meeting, we will have black LSCWA L.E.D. hats for sale. These hats have built in led lights to illuminate your night time adventures. Non lighted hats will also be on sale.

Led hats $13 Other hats $10

remaining winter caps $5This will be one of the best sales of the year. If you like to save money, then stop by the merchandise table and claim your LSCWA gear before it’s too late.

On Wednesday, January 25, we had our 5th club get-2-gether at ‘Yorgo’s Family Restaurant’. I could not attend because of a prior appointment, however five LSCWA members who did attend the breakfast are as follows: Richard and JoAnne, Bill Hess, Tim Covert and Dale Billings. As usual, they all had a great time. They discussed a past vacation to England, fishing stories and made a list of future restaurants to visit. Our next Tree House breakfast get together will be Wednesday, February 29th. (write it down). It will be at Rams Horn, Jefferson and 9-Mile Rd. (where the old Big Boy was located). We will meet at 9:30 am and have breakfast together. If that is too late to eat breakfast for you, show up earlier, eat by yourself and we will buy your coffee when we get there at 9:15 / 9:30. Bring your wife or grandchild. Bring a neighbor. You do not have to be a senior to break bread with us at our Tree House get-2-gethers. Just have $5, wear socks and show up. We always have fun chit-chatting about whatever is on your mind. We rotate places to dine every month, so come on down and join us. Future meeting places are: ‘Charlies’ (next to Gilberts’ Lounge); ‘Steves Back Room (Jeff S. of 10-Mile); ‘Copper Penny (Harper below 9-mile) and ‘Franks on the Avenue’ (Harper & 11-Mile).

PRESIDENTS CORNERby Dave Marcelewski

Our fundraisers have been financially supporting ourclub for a long time now. These fundraisers pay for all of thethings that our club does throughout the year. Many of thethings that we do are for the area children. This years Kids Ice Fishing Outing was a huge success. We

hosted over 460 children. Who would have thought that manykids would come out on Lake St. Clair on a beautiful winterday? This event was bigger than anyone expected. All I had tosay was "WOW!!!” It was nice to see the smiles on all of thosekids’ faces.

I am sure that our Kids Summer Outing will be a hugesuccess also. This event does cost the club some money to puton. However, we are the Lake St. Clair Walleye Association. Moreover, This Is What We Do! We teach people to fish. Youngand old alike. We also show people that there are fishing oppor-tunities right in their backyard. In addition, make sure theseopportunities will be there in the future.

The club needs your help in funding these and otherevents that we do through the year. Not necessarily the moneyout of your pockets. Nevertheless, we will take a donation. However, mostly we need your help with all of our fundraisers.

You can come out and work our club table at Bass ProShops. Or help run the Kids Fishing Ponds there. The club doesmake some good money working these ponds.

We also need your help with the poker fundraisers thatwe sponsor. These poker fundraisers are a great moneymakerfor the club. They are the biggest moneymakers that we do.

Ticket selling can be something that you can do to helpour club. We were only 100 tickets short of a sellout on the lastone. The paperwork involved with these fundraisers is mucheasier with a sellout.

We also have Motor Raffle tickets that need to be sold.Maybe if you have a morning or afternoon off and need some-thing to do, you can get some tickets and sell them in front ofLakeside Fishing Shop. Dan said we could sell tickets in front ofhis bait shop anytime. I have done this in the past and had greatsuccess doing it. In addition, I did get to talk a lot of fishing.Including very fresh fishing reports.

I am asking for your help because this is how we fundall the things that we do throughout the year. So help your cluband have a good time doing it because the club needs yourhelp.

2011 MERCURY MOTOR RAFFLEBy Ron D. Sharp

Raffle sales for the motor donated by Rose Marine arestarting out real good this year. I need more people to help by pick-ing up tickets. The drawing is in August so you have time to sellthem but we will not have a sell out, which is my goal this year, ifyou do not take some tickets and sell them. It is not too hard to sellthese because the money goes towards the kids’ outings and theoperation of our walleye ponds. We can also mail you a bunch oftickets. If you need tickets, see me at the meeting or email me [email protected].

FEBRUARY GENERAL MEMBERSHIPThe February general membership meeting was a huge

success. We had a record meeting crowd of 213 people. 175members plus 38 guests. This equates to 67% of our member-ship attended the last meeting. Keep it up people. Word isspreading – “We have a Great Fishing Club”.

“muskellunge”By Henry Beard & Roy McKie

Extremely unpredictable and difficult-to-catch game fish in the pike family whose name comes either from the Ojibwa word for “mosquito bite” or an Algonquian phrase that translates roughly as “Hello, sucker.”

My neighbor Marcia Wallace took several pictures of a Bald Eagle eating a fish on the ice in front of my house. It has been four years since we have seen a Bald Eagle

in our area. They are awesome.
