    2010The Canton Fire Department

visited Lawrence Elementary School Tuesday afternoon to talk to the kids about fire safety for Fire Prevention Week. Firefighter Charlie Johnson explained to the kids the importance of checking their smoke detectors and having escape plans, also taking questions from the kids after a video demonstration. Johnson, along with two other firefighters, also helped distribute hats and jackets to teachers to hand out to their classes after the presentation on fire safety.

The Cross Country Big Sioux Conference was held in Canton last Friday. “Canton was represented really well at the conference meet,” Said Coach Troy James. “In four races, we had 16 top 20 finishers, it’s a great contribute to all of the hard work the kids have put in. Plus they had to overcome our hilly course and hot weather.” Halie McMains took home the first place spot once again for the varsity girls. She ran with a time of 16.1. Morgan Goodroad came right behind her with a time of 16.41. Sally Peterson finished in sixth place with a time of 16.57. Josie Johnson finished in tenth place with a time of 17.17 and Cayce Johnson finished with a time of 17.26 for 11th place. Taylor Lohan finished in 23rd place with a time of 18.38. The team finished in first place with a team score of 19 followed by Elk Point Jefferson with 33 points.

The staff at Lawrence Elementary raised $1,132 for Carson Stansbury recently by paying $1 to wear blue jeans on Wednesdays.

1995Potions of the Canton High School

    Building are unsafe for occupancy

of students, according to Architect Blake Holman of Holman and Associates in Sioux Falls. Holman addressed the Canton School Board and approximately 200 interested cit izens during an emergency meeting held in the high school auditorium.

Holman said the entire eastern portion of the high school south of the hallway and east of the main entrance should be fully vacated and the natural gas lines passing through this area be physically isolated and shut off. He also said the north classrooms in the junior high building should be vacated due to the danger of debris potentially falling from the three story high school on to the junior high building.

The area deemed unsafe in the eastern portion of the high school has been sealed off since the beginning of this school year and last Friday the two junior high classrooms were vacated.

The Canton C-Hawks hosted the Beresford Watchdogs and came away with a 12-6 victory to raise their Big Sioux Conference record to 4-0 and 5-2 for the season.

The Lady Hawks basketball team played in the Big Sioux Tournament. Canton first met Vermillion on Tuesday and were put down 75-25. Thursday night Canton metAlcester/Hudson and lost 59-41. Inthe final game the C-Hawks tookon Dakota Valley and were defeated 51-30.

1970A public hearing has been called

for Wednesday, October 14 for Project F 016-5 CN42215 and 42218. This project is in regards to grading, structures and surfacing of U.S.

Highway 18 starting at the Iowa border east of Canton and going west to Highway 11.

Jerry Oehlerking, manager of the Newton Hills State Park said Monday that the park will closed the end of October. Water facilities will be turned off October 18, unless colder weather makes it necessary to do so sooner. The park manager reports 81,618 visitors to the park during the January 1, 1970 to October 1, 1970 period.

The Canton C-Hawks spoiled South Sioux City’s homecoming festivities last Friday evening as they handed the Cardinals a 20-0 defeat.

The annual gun club crow hunt will be held Sunday. Any interested or in need of information contact Dr. R.F. Freeman.

    1876Prairie fires were visible every

night last week. While it is necessary to burn off the prairie grass prior to plowing, it should be done with great caution. A neighbor of Huge Jacobson set a fire last Friday and it got away from him, destroying a stable and granery. A law suit under the new Prairie

Fire law, or settlement, is in order. Dr. Plumbe will hereafter devote

himself exclusively to town and office practice.

Mr. Spencer has sold half interest in the mill at Fairview and is now the proprietor of the store at that place.

The first log building in Canton has outlived its usefulness and will make firewood for Dar Keller this winter. It was located in the rear of Keller’s hardware store and was built by Ben Hill in 1867.

that was taken from a 893 Canton paper, please take a few minutes and think about this: What if Lincoln County still had an active Old Settlers Association? And what if they still held an annual meeting/celebration during the summer?

Sure, I know there is no one living that came into this area over 150 plus years ago. But there are many descendants, including myself. The new organization could be called descendants of Old Settlers Association or just leave the name as it is and open it up to anyone who has a strong interest in the history of Lincoln County.

An event could be held in Canton, our county seat, perhaps as a part of Celebrate Canton, our big summer

event. Or the event could rotate on an annual basis between Canton, Lennox, Har r isburg, Hudson, Fairview, Tea and Worthing.

There could be speakers (local or from far away) music, an old time dance, food, a parade etc. Every year we could choose a family with deep roots in Lincoln County and their history could be the main focus of that years event. We could even crown a Mr. and Mrs. Lincoln County Old Settlers.

If any of these ideas resonate with you please give me a call (605-97-2582) and we’ll talk. I think you will enjoy the following article written by Arthur Linn and taken from the Canton Farmers Leader describing the first Old Settlers Association meeting in June, 1893.

    From Chapter 7

Looking Back - The Stories and History of Lincoln County

The old settlers meeting at Worthing last week was the largest and happiest crowd that ever assembled in Lincoln County. By noon some 3,500 people had arrived. The speakers stand under the tall cottonwoods of Madden’s grove was occupied by toastmaster Pelton. The exercises were opened by an address by President Fitzgerald followed with prayer and music by the Lennox cornet band. John Holsey spoke of the pioneer days when carrying the mail from Fort Dakota to Sioux City when he wore the army blue. Ed Nor ton was called upon to tell how the grand old patient ox team aided in subduing the wild prairie when horses could not stand the pioneer conditions. Ed’s address was full of wit, humor and pathos, and called to memory how nobly the ox stood by the pioneer in his struggles.

Mrs. Orlando Alexander’s address was charming and a true picture of the pleasures and hardships connected with the covered wagon in its ever onward march with the glorious pioneers. She pictured the long and dreary march from the end of railroads over the prairies and across streams where fording had to be done without regard to danger. How the “prairie schooner” served as a home while the sod house was built, and how the sight of a covered wagon cheered the hearts of those who were looking for neighbors. The prairie schooner, the ox and the sod house constituted the prime factors in the development of Lincoln County and the west.

Mrs. Tillman Mausbach was the next to address the crowd. Her remarks were substantially as follows:

Ladies and Gentlemen: We too came west in a prairie schooner. We could not afford oxen so we bought a span of old horses and the first hill we came to we found that one of them was balky and I walked up every hill between here and Madison, Wisconsin, and carried a log to block the wheel, for he was one of those horses that went backwards when he got tired of going forward. We left Madison the ninth of October and arrived here November 3, 1871. We lived that winter with my sister, Mrs. C. H. Voges three miles and a half west of Canton.

In the spring we had to move on our claim and as we came west with more faith than money, we had to build a sod house. I married a city man, a blacksmith, and I agreed to help and learn him how to farm. Well, one morning I started out to teach him. We walked five miles and we laid sod all day for a wall to our house and then walked back that night. The next morning we found our wall had fallen down. We stood and looked at it a while and then I said “well, lets try it again.” And the next time we had better success. We were losing so much time walking that we got James Rainsebottom to move us into a little shanty on the claim south of ours. We got our walls up and the poles and a little hay on the roof, and on the fifth of May we moved in. That day Tillman got word from Mr. Myers, the blacksmith in Can ton who he had been working for, that he must come back and go to work. Monday morning at four o’clock he started out and walked to Canton and did not get back until Satur-day night. I stayed alone with a four month old baby, with no door or window in the house and the stove set up out on the prairie. It rained every day. I made a fire between showers, baked pancakes and dried the baby clothes in the oven.

In June it began to rain in dead earnest and for three nights it just poured. I had to pack our few belongings in a barrel and put a board over it. I put the flour and the baby under the table, for that had an oil cloth over it. We hung an oil cloth over the bed and every once in a while the mud and water leaking through the sod roof would get so heavy that a nail would give way and let it all down on the bed. Our neighbors were a little better off for they had an um brella they used in the house.

But that is only the dark side of the picture. We used to have good times too. On Christmas we had a picnic dinner and we laid boards on the dirt in part of the house and had a dance in the evening. I was afraid people would stub their toes but Jim Madden said it would be just the thing as it gave a fellow a chance to hold up his girl.

The sod house is gone, but what glorious memories are connected with it where the first born rolled and played on the clean earth floor. Now Lincoln County sod is too valuable to build houses out of-lumber is cheaper.

Mr. Cuppett then spoke on the topic of “The Veteran Soldier as a Pioneer,” and Jim Madden followed with exag gerated stories about the enormous crops harvested in the early days. Comrade DeLong then proposed three cheers for the pioneers, the echoes of which must have crossed the Sioux near Fairview.

Hon. J. M. Wahl, one of the first members of the ter ritorial legislature from Lincoln County, told of his ex periences at Yankton and of the many incidents that took place during his years of service as a law maker.

Uncle Jere Gehon talked about Lincoln County and its reputation of being one of the best counties in the state. C. B.Kennedy had the farmer’s boy for his discussion and he handled the subject with a knowledge born of experience.

Willis Benedict was asked to speak for the pioneer women. Willis is quite a ladies man and did the subject justice. Frank Leavitt was assigned the pioneer babies, a pleasing subject for a man of his mature age, and E. Pen niston and B. Wright sang songs that were cheering and grand.

The festivities concluded amid music and general rejoic ing, and then the crowd scattered, some going home, others to the ball game and others to hunt up old time friends and review the past.

In the evening the dancers assembled at Wilkin Hall and soon filled it, and then the Odd Fellows Hall was thrown open. Both halls were filled with merry dancers and the festivities continued until broad daylight. Those who missed the first meeting of the old settlers missed a genuine love feast.

The Canton Pool Fundraiser was held on Sunday, September 27 and to say it was a success would be an understatement. The event raised over $20,000 for the new pool, and it wouldn’t have been possible without the support and dedication of all who attended and the many different individuals and businesses who contributed in some way.

To start, a special thank you goes out to The Canton Barn for not only donating their beautiful facility for the event, but for also being so accommodating throughout the whole day. Members of the pool committee arrived early and several of them stayed long after the last guest had left for the night, and Tim Blackstone was there at a moment’s notice to accommodate in any way the committee needed. Thank you also to the extra staff at the Canton Barn for working so hard to make sure things flowed smoothly during the hustle and bustle of the night.

The Canton Barn also was gracious in donating a pair of tickets to their upcoming Fairy Princess Tea Party event on Sunday, October 25 to one lucky little lady who attended the special Meet and Greet and photo shoot with Miss South Dakota Teen USA. Not only that, but they also assisted in selling raffle tickets at the many events they hosted at their facility in the weeks leading up to the fundraiser.

Tim and Kalli have always been so giving to the Canton community, and their efforts in being willing to contribute always go above and beyond what is expected. Thank you, Tim and Kalli, for being some of Canton’s biggest supporters and for being so generous to all who work with you.

Thank you to the local business sponsors who were willing to contribute to the cost of the Troy-Bilt zero-turn lawnmower that was raffled off at the end of the

night: Autopros, Iverson’s Car Sales, Haisch Pharmacy, Hoogendoorn Construction, Johnson Feed, Inc., State Line Insurance, Sunshine Foods, The Garden Shed Floral & Window Fashions, Tri-State Ready Mix, Verley Financial, Canton Insurance Agency, Companion Animal Clinic, Fossum & Bindert, NewVision Automotive, Souvignier Auctions, Swenson Chiropractic, 4T Cattle Company and The Black Angus.

Because of all of these sponsors, the lawnmower was paid in full and 100% of raffle ticket sales was all profit. The committee made the decision to have a limit of 400 tickets and every single ticket was sold, raising over $8,200. Also a big thank you goes out to Canton Home & Farm Supply for supplying the lawnmower and delivering it on their own time to The Canton Barn the morning of the event.

Thank you to Pat and Melissa Minihan with The Meat Wagon for the donation of the pulled pork and barbeque sauce, to Sunshine Foods for donating the buns, chips and paper serving products for the meal, and to Amber Van Dam at Amber Whisk for donating the chocolate chip cookies. We planned for 200 people and we ran out of buns and cookies, had three bags of chips left and maybe one pound of pork. Talk about good planning!

Thank you to the Laubach Family Band for providing hours of wonderful musical entertainment for all who attended. As always, you all sounded amazing!

To Canton High School senior and Miss South Dakota Teen USA Izabel Kreger and to Robyn Ventura from Rockin’ RV Photography, thank you for the donation of your time in being available for the meet and greet and photo shoot event. Izabel - you did all of this the day before your big

Homecoming week started, and Robyn - you not only donated your time but also released all of your photos from the day online for free so that all guests who attended could enjoy the pictures. Thank you for your generosity.

To all who donated to the silent auction - you are amazing! There are too many donors to name individually, but the silent auction raised over $5,000 for the night alone. INCREDIBLE!

We also wish to thank Dakota Inflatables for the inflatables and games that provided hours of entertainment for all of the kids in attendance; to the 8th Grade Football Team for volunteering to assist in implementing the games; to the Varsity Dance Attack for doing all of the face painting for the kids; to First Bank & Trust, Farmer’s State Bank, Lawrence Elementary School and several pool committee members for the donation of the many kid’s game prizes and candy; to The Wheel for volunteering to help sell raffle tickets leading up to the event; to all of the members of the Pool Committee who donated their time in preparing and working the event; and to Helen Rowe for assisting the committee by drawing the winner of the mower raffle and for always being one of Canton’s biggest cheerleaders.

To everyone who donated in some way throughout the night, thank you. Each and every purchase or donation has truly made a difference in the further development of the new Canton Pool. This is why we love to live where we do. This is why we care about our community so much. It is businesses and people who make things like this possible. In closing, we as a committee appreciate all the support we have been given and will continue to serve Canton proudly. #CantonCan

In 1981 some Canton High Students came up with a silly, goofy idea ofseeing how many kids they could cram into a regular full-size car. They did this during semester tests. They got 16 students into Scott Brunks car. They had ten in back and six in front.

Here is a picture of the 16 kids who piled in Scott Brunk’s car. They includedScott Brunk, Torrie Bong, Tim Minihan, Ryan Wissink, Chuck Smith, Dawn Wieczorek, Claudia Carlstrom, Mike Rebischke, Chris McCart, Bill Rudolph, Pam Gross, Kim Viereck, Michelle Wolthoff, Bruce Bogue, Kay Riedinger and Craig Solem.

Dear Dave,Do you have suggestions on how

to interact with debt collectors? Sometimes they are reasonable and easy to work with, but others are rude and pushy. Your advice would be appreciated.

PaulDear Paul,You’l l r un into al l sor ts of

collectors, no matter what kind of debt you have. Occasionally they are friendly and understanding, while others can be downright mean and nasty. Whatever their approach is, you have to keep in mind they’re all after one thing—your money.

Most debt collectors prey on a person’s emotions and lack of confidence. If you don’t know your rights, they can scare you by using bogus threats. Understand what I’m saying here, Paul. If you have debt, you have a legal and moral obligation to pay it. At the same time, you need to calmly and confidently control these kinds of conversations. You might have made some financial mistakes, but that doesn’t mean you should allow someone to abuse you.

When it comes to dealing with debt collectors, keep track of all the calls and emails. Write down the names of anyone you talk to and when

they called. A record of all contact is important, and it will make it easier to report them if they violate the federal Fair Debt Collection Practices Act. If the collector agrees to settle the debt, get it in writing and keep the document as proof in case they “forget” they made the offer.

Also, be completely up to speed

on your accounts. Know what you owe, who you owe, and have a record of all the payments you’ve made. Knowing the facts gives you the upper hand in any situation. Don’t be intimidated by debt collectors, either. Calmly explain your situation, the reason you’re behind on the debt, and how you plan to pay it off. Don’t get emotional and let yourself get drawn into an argument or shouting match. If they insult you, or yell or curse at you—yes, this happens sometimes—hang up immediately.

Financial troubles like debt can make every aspect of your life feel messed up. If you want to get back on track, start living on a written, monthly budget, and attack your debts using the debt snowball system. It’s not easy, and it takes discipline, hard work, and sacrifices, but it’s worth it!

    Windmill Of My Mind

    by Margaret Schultz

October is almost here. It has always been one of my favorite months – not too hot and not too cold. Inspired by the colorful and falling leaves, I once penned the following:

    October MornSun’s rising,

    Combine’s whirring,Dust is fl ying,

    Farmers hurrying.Chrysanthemum’s blooming,

    Blue Jays feeding,Garden’s drying,

No more weeding,Days are shortening,Leaves are falling,

Air is cooling,Geese are calling.Summer’s ended,

    Fall is born,I truly love

    An October morn.

A number of years ago I gave a program to a group of, primarily, older people. I debated about what to say (amidst all the songs and silly jokes ) and decided to tell them (along with a reminder to myself) that even though we are getting older, we can still have dreams , hopes and aspirations. Here is what I came up with. If I have already shared this, I apologize.

YOU’RE NEVER TOO OLD TO DREAMIf you think you’re too old to give something a try,

If you think that life is just passing you by;If you think that you don’t have the”means”,

The brains or the muscles to follow your dreams,Just sit yourself down and think for a minute -

There’s a victory to be won, and you can win it!Yes, life has its’ problems, its’ ups and its’ downs,

There are plenty of struggles that can cause us to frown; But generally life’s not as bad as it seems,

So, go ahead, friends, and work towards your dreams. If your river of blessings, is merely a stream,Remember, you’re never too old to dream.

So, when the going gets hard and push comes to shove,Don’t give up on yourself or the people you love,Be your own cheerleader and cheer for your team,

And never, never, grow too old to dream.

Another year, another great Homecoming week! Congratulations to all of the members of the 2020 Canton Royalty - Payton Benoit, Abi Baldwin, Elizabeth Toso, Paige Schroedermeier, Daniel Esche, Lance Tieszen, Bruce Van De Stroet, Marshall Minihan, and Queen Izabel Kreger and Master of Ceremonies Seth Peterson.

There isn’t a member of the Royalty this year that I don’t remember from when they were all much younger and they would come to the pool during the summer. I’ll never forget little Paige Schroedermeier tagging along with her older brothers, chatting it up with the lifeguards and keeping us on our toes, at one time even channeling her inner Chris Farley and telling us that if we didn’t shape up we’d end up “living in a van down by the river!”

It has been fun to watch these outstanding young adults grow up and become such role models for their peers. They all looked very sharp at Coronation. It was fun hearing about their most memorable moments at CHS, and I had to laugh because I was there at the PAC the night that a group of girls got stuck in the elevator on opening night, and remember Vanessa Baldwin texting Abi and her friends while they were stuck in there. They were doing just fine, but several of them had to go the bathroom! I had kind of forgotten about that happening, so when a couple of the girls mentioned in their bios at Coronation I had to laugh.

I also loved King Seth’s advice to underclassmen: “Stay in band.”

Another one of my favorite parts of the ceremony was sophomore Emerson Townsend’s performance of “What Baking Can Do” from the musical, The Waitress. What a voice that girl has! WOW! Emerson - great job, girl! I can’t wait to hear more from you over the next couple of years.

Once again I also just wanted to recognize Deb Pederson for all of the hard work that she does each

and every year during Homecoming and especially the Coronation ceremony. Every year I think the decorations at Coronation couldn’t possibly get any prettier, and then every year Deb proves me wrong. I also love that Deb has been so dedicated to sticking with tradition when it comes to Homecoming. All of the capes, the Queen’s scepter, the King’s sword, and the way that the ceremony is carried out has very traditional roots that go back decades at Canton High School. The display cases at CHS every year with the Coronation memorabilia always look excellent as well. Deb and Kaitlyn - Thank you for keeping these traditions alive!

I also thought it was very classy of both Queen Izzy and King Seth for recognizing and thanking the Canton School Board and administrators for ensuring that the Coronation ceremony was able to happen with all that is going on regarding Covid-19. Even though it was different than any other year, the Royalty members, emcees, and the first grade attendants were all able to have a number of special guests in attendance, and all of the upperclassmen were able to attend as well. And for those who couldn’t be there, the event was live-steamed online. I’d say that’s doing pretty good considering everything that is going on in the world right now.

I think the Canton School Board, school administrators, and all teachers and staff have been doing a great job this year in not only keeping all students and school staff safe, but in also working extra hard to make sure that life doesn’t stop and that our students are still able to get all of these incredible experiences - even though the circumstances are a lot different and more limited than ever before. Thank you to all who have had a part in this process.

And of course, congratulations to the C-Hawk football team for their win on Friday. What a perfect way to end the week!

***On Sunday I had the opportunity

to be a part of yet another great fundraiser in the community, and I want to thank the Forest Hill Cemetery Association Board of Directors for including me in this endeavor. The process for this fundraiser, called “Tales From the Grave: Historical Figures from Canton’s Past” began last year and was meant to be implemented around Memorial Day. With Covid, it got pushed back, but I don’t think they could have asked for a nicer fall day or a better turnout for their first time doing this.

I want to congratulate the Canton cit izens who por t rayed these historical figures - Sam Nelson, Kathy Hill, Ron Ingebrigtson, Dave Amundson, Bill Peterson and Curt Hepner - for the outstanding job each of them did in preparing for these roles. It has been so much fun watching these presentations come together over the past few months and seeing them come full circle on Sunday was pretty incredible.

While I was at the cemetery watching these presentations, I couldn’t help but think of the line from the Broadway musical, “Hamilton.” I know I’ve referenced this quote before, but it is just so fitting I had to bring it up again.

The line is, “You have no control who lives, who dies, who tells your story.” I’m sure the historical Canton figures portrayed at the fundraiser this weekend - Andrew Handschiegel, Rosemond Tuve, James Wahl, Cornelius B. Kennedy, Lon Williams and Earl Boyce - had no idea that someday, decades long after they had left this earth, that their stories would be told this weekend.

But I think that if they were there on Sunday, on the very sacred ground where they lay to rest to hear their stories be told - and I believe they were - they would have been very proud.

Pictures to come in a future issue.

Tennessee Titans have tested positive for Covid-19. Those who tested posit ive will quarantine according to the NFL. People who were in contact with these players will receive additional tests, and contact tracing will also be conducted around those who may have been in close contact with the eight people who tested positive. After playing the Titans

on the previous Sunday, the Minnesota Vik ings f ind themselves a little nervous that maybe their team might be next with the outbreak. The Titans did not realize the extent of their positive cases, originally

informing everyone that three players tested positive. Some people believe that the NFL should follow the NBA

and NHL and start a "Bubble" league so it is not only safe for the players but also to the staff and others. The Titans have officially announced on 9-30-20 that they will not being playing in this week's game against the Pittsburg Steelers and it will be postponed.

By Karri JohnsonLosing a pet is an unfortunate

and helpless event. But in Dell Rapids, losing pets seems to be such a common thing it got to a point where Tara Boechler had enough and started a Facebook page to help track down lost pets in the area. In July and August

alone, there had been 29 missing pets posted on the community page Boechler’s page, called “Bring Home the Dell Rapids Pets,” got off to a big start when 500 community

members joined the Facebook page. As of now, the group has located and reconnected two lost pets with their owners,

but this is only the beginning. The group has also

been responsible for organ iz ing some volu nteers to go out and look for the missing pets. They post on the page if they have found a lost pet. Losing a pet is heartbreaking

but with a good community and being connected there is nothing you can’t find.

By Aiden LowinCanton High school has a

new club for students to join. Epic Game Club, a club for avid gamers or those just interesting in learning more about them, seems to have appeared overnight. So where did it come from?

The new club was started by two teachers, Mr. Stephensen and Mrs. Thayer. They plan on running the club over lunch every Monday, and possibly having some meetings or gatherings after school depending on time. The first meeting was Monday, Sept. 28, and the club began discussing their plans for the remainder of the year.

    Before the meeting, Stephensen

and Thayer stated they would like to involve both board games and video games, using some more of the strategic games that are a bit more complex than your basic Sorry or Monopoly. For the video games side of things, they stated they like to play games like Super Smash Bros., FIFA, Mariokart, and Madden, utilizing PS4s, XBOX Ones, and Nintendo Switches.

I also spoke to them about running things like D&D, and they said that something of that running time would be more up to the members, and that while they would be alright with it, they would like to see the members on the same page.

By Kaiyah Clark Canton High School, led

by art teacher Mrs. Guzzo, is hosting a “Canton Mural Competit ion,” by having students submit their own mural designs. When asked why she wanted a new mural, Guzzo mentioned “I wanted to show off the art department more by giving students a chance to express themselves in a talented manner.” The wing the ar t room

houses currently has painted cei l ing t i les , which a re typically painted by senior students. Guzzo said however, “the halls could still use a little more color and character to them. They just have a little bit of a dull feeling to them.” Mr. Steffensen, who has a classroom next door, said, “It will be great to add a little something in the halls. The color will brighten my day.” Mrs. Guzzo wants students

to partake in the making of the mural as will, which will be made of different submissions and views from students. “The final decision on the different submissions will be made after Homecoming,” Guzzo said.
