Official Newsletter of River Bend Gun Club

River Bend Gun Club is a club for members, founded in 1958. Issue No. 275 August 2020

In this month’s article we will talk about the importance of what “COLD RANGE” means and signing in on the ranges. This isn’t directed to the members who properly sign-in on the ranges and knows what a “COLD RANGE” means, this is directed to the few that must be constantly reminded and prodded to sign-in before shooting and what to do while the range is cold. When the Range Officers are making their rounds, they are finding members who are shooting, but “forgot” to sign in, and those who don’t know what to do when the range is cold. If these members continue to “forget”, the Range Officers may invite the members to another New Member Orientation to refresh them on the range rules.

First, we will discuss what to do when the range is cold. The RBGC range rule concerning what to do when the range is cold.

3.3 - Range Cold Indicators - Flashing Lights (Red)

Some of the ranges are equipped with flashing red lights to indicate the range is cold. Under no circumstances should anyone be on the firing line when these lights are on. If you are ready to leave or clean your gun when asked to make the range cold, indicate that you need a few minutes to unload and remove your gun from the line while the range is still hot. If you are switching guns, ensure that the gun on the line is unloaded with the bolt open and an ECI inserted and move it to a rear table then, making sure that the bolt on the other gun is open and an ECI inserted, bring that gun from the rear table to the line. Once your gun switch is complete, step behind the red line and do your part to ensure the range cold procedure is complete.

Note: Cleaning unloaded firearms, adjusting sights and general repair / maintenance on unloaded firearms on the rear tables is allowed during a hot or cold range as long as there is no ammunition on the tables.

When the red lights are flashing, no one should be seated at a bench on the firing line, touching a gun on the firing line, or moving items back and forth from the firing line to the rear tables. Some ranges have Red Lines painted down the center, behind the firing line. While the range is cold everyone on the range must stay behind the red line except to go down range and hang targets or to pick up brass from the ground in front of the firing line.

Next on what I want to discuss again is the importance of signing in on the range. As every member knows, he or she must sign in and if they bring family and guests, they must sign in on the range they are using. The only exception is if the member is competing in a RBGC approved match under the direction of a Range Officer of that event. Below is the range rule concerning signing in on the range.

1.7- Member/Family/Guest Policy

All members/Family/Guests must sign in as soon as they arrive at that range. When signing in, the member/family/guest must provide the date, time, and circle “Mem” “Family” or “Guest” indicating that they are a member/family/guest, and fill in the caliber of firearm(s) they intend to use on that range. Membership badges must be VISIBLE at all times while on Club property except when the Member is actively competing in a match. Lost badges will be replaced upon request. Members pay for the privilege of shooting at RBGC and are expected to ensure that other range users display current membership badge or are the guests of, and accompanied by, a member.

I have an excerpt of a sign in sheet that shows the proper way of filling out the sign in sheet. This process is very simple and quick, and it keeps the CRO’s happy.

August is National Family Fun Month

Bring them to the range!

Please print your name clearly, and the date and time. Indicate whether you’re are the member, family, or guest. Then write in the caliber you are shooting on the range you are signing in on. Pay close attention to the firearm you are shooting on that range. If you have doubts on the type firearm for the range you are using, stop and review the rule book (which is in each sign-in box), or ask the CRO, Range Officers, and the Club Employees. Finally, sign your name. That’s it, then go enjoy shooting at the range.

So, you are asking Mr. CRO, what is the big deal about signing in? Well, first, it is a club rule. Please see the above RBGC Rule.

Second, it gives RBGC a way to track the range usage for future range development. For example, from the sign-in sheets at Action Pistol Bays 1-2-3, the club was able to see that ranges are used heavily by the members, this is not counting the Action Pistol matches and I-CORE matches held on those bays. With that information, the Board of Directors allocated funding to build more bays around the Action Pistol areas. As a result, RBGC has two new bays at Action Pistol. Look for more information in the future when these bays will be officially open for the members to use.

In closing, the Range Officers at RBGC are hoping that you are having a safe and healthy summer at the range. Please shoot safely, hydrate at the range, wash your hands, and social distance while enjoying your time at RBGC. If you have any questions or concerns, please contact one of the Range Officers or send an e-mail to [email protected]

MEMBERS ARE RESPONSIBLE FOR KNOWING AND ADHERING TO THE CURRENT RANGE RULES. IF YOU DO NOT UNDERSTAND ANY OF THESE RULES, DO NOT USE THE RANGE UNTIL YOU HAVE ASKED FOR AN EXPLANATION OR CLARIFICATION. IGNORANCE IS NOT AN EXCUSE FOR FAILING TO FOLLOW THE RANGE RULES.

Until next month, be safe and healthy.

I suspect that you are getting pretty tired of this whole COVID-19 virus thing. I certainly am. You may have heard the term “COVID fatigue” that is often used to describe feelings of despair, anger, frustration, grief and helplessness that may be associated with the pandemic. I’d bet that many more of us are suffering from COVID fatigue than from the actual virus.

There are a lot of numbers and data being regurgitated by the media and internet and some of it doesn’t make much sense. The media seems more interested in using the virus story to frighten people, some state governors and city mayors appear to be using the pandemic as an opportunity to control people and to push their agendas and the two main political parties are both using the situation to make the other party appear inept at best and evil at worst. I’m sure you are all just as tired of it as I am.

What is the situation here at River Bend Gun Club? The club has remained open every day since the pandemic was announced months ago. Since April, signage has been posted at the gate and sign in boxes on every range, on the web site and in the Bullet-In asking members not to come to the club if they are ill and to practice social distancing. Wearing facial coverings has remained optional and members are reminded to sign in on every range used, display their membership badges and to keep their family and guests with them while on club property. During late April and early May, Club Management asked members to refrain from bringing guests, but that temporary requirement was discontinued on May 13, 2020.

Now, we all need to do more to protect ourselves and others. A person who participated in a scheduled match a few weeks ago contacted the Match Director a few days after the match and reported that he tested positive for COVID-19. The Match Director reported this to Club Management and notified everyone who attended the match that an unnamed participant had tested positive. The person who tested positive did the responsible thing by notifying the Match Director and the Match Director assumed the responsibility for notifying everyone who was at the match.

If you, your family member or guest develop COVID-19 symptoms or test positive within 10 days of visiting the club, please be responsible and notify the Club Manager via telephone at (770)893-3502 or email at [email protected]. Please remember to display your membership badge, ensure that you and everyone you bring to the club signs in on every range used and practice frequent hand sanitizing and social distancing.

The wearing of facial coverings or masks has become quite controversial. At the present time, subject to potential changes in GA Governor Brian Kemp’s Executive Orders, the wearing of facial coverings or masks is recommended but not required at River Bend Gun Club. If you have an opinion about facial coverings or masks, please keep it to yourself while at River Bend Gun Club. No constructive purposes are served by ostracizing anyone else for wearing or not wearing a mask. The USA is still a free country and we should respect the rights of others and allow them to do what they think is best for their own health and safety.

June 2020 Rimfire Benchrest Match Report

By: Simon D. Bailey

The second Rimfire Benchrest match of the 2020 season was held on Sunday June 28th with a very full

field of 16 competitors and a wide variety of rifles on hand. The larger field allowed four classes to be

formed – four shooters in the unlimited class, three in the Premium class, five in the factory class and

four in the semiauto class.

Despite the club providing three additional benches since the last match, the turnout required two

relays, with the unlimited, premium and factory shooters firing in relay one and the semiauto class firing

in relay two. With only the semiauto shooters firing in the second relay, the single loading rule was

relaxed allowing shooters to load multiple rounds in the magazine allowing them to focus on the wind

and shooting, not on inserting magazines.

The course of fire was four ARA targets fired at 50 yards with worst edge scoring. Targets were self-

scored, and spot checked by match officials. The Unlimited and Premium classes fired the original,

unforgiving, ARA target and the Factory and Semiautomatic classes fired the, slightly more friendly, ARA

Factory target.

Shooting started with moderate temperatures and still to

light wind but very high, think tropical 90%, relative

humidity. With rimfire 22 rifles sensitive to ammo, guns

seemed to either like the conditions or hate them. Some

shooters tried multiple lots of ammo, but for some, nothing

seemed to work. As is typical at River Bend, the winds

started picking up after the second card and were really

blowing by the end of the match with interesting results.

In the Unlimited class Joe Ettershank

and Dave Rabin were consistent and

seemed to be the least effected by the

soupy air through the first two cards

with Ettershank ahead of Rabin 4800 to

3825. In the Premium class, Steve Gould

had to retire his Vudoo V22 after the

first card for a work related emergency

and Andy Greenspon struggled with his

usually reliable Anschutz to hold first Premium after two cards. Newcomer John McBrayer using his

Vudoo V22 started well but hung the wrong target for the second card to score no points.

(Continued on page 10)

Page 10: Official Newsletter of River Bend Gun Club The Bullet IN 08 BulletIN.pdf · Official Newsletter of River Bend Gun Club River Bend Gun Club is a club for members, founded in 1958.

10

In the Factory class, fired on the slightly more generous ARA Factory class target, Bob Morris fired

extremely well with his Kimber 82G and took a solid hold on first place with a 4525. David Vis using his

CZ453 was holding second Factory with a 3870.

With 4 semiautomatics on hand, this

match hosted the first Semiauto

class in quite some time. Shawn

Forgacs, using his Ruger 10/22

Green mountain combo fired from

his “homemade” adjustable rest and

took a commanding lead after two

with a 4375. In second place was

first time competitor Spain Davis

and his 10/22 Shaw rig at 3345.

For the final two cards, the rising and erratic

wind and warmer temperatures removed the

muggy but resulted in very tough wind

conditions. In the Unlimited class Ettershank

continued unfazed by the gale to take 1st

Unlimited with a 7825. Dave Rabin suffered the

wind somewhat on the fourth card but finished a

solid 2nd Unlimited at 7350, 190 points ahead of

third place.

In the Premium class Greenspon continued to

struggle and was initially awarded the 1st Premium finish with a 4140. Unfortunately, a math error was

made, and the correct 1st Premium position was won by McBrayer with a 4400 - despite scoring 0 from

his second card! John will receive his correct cash award at the next match.

In Factory class, David Vis had to withdraw after 3 cards despite being in second place. Bob Morris

dominated the class with his Kimber 82G to finish with a commanding 8460 over Phill Bettis and his CZ

457 tallying 7205. Doug McNash, shooting in Factory class for the first time, finished as 3rd Factory with

a 5905. It looks like Bob may be headed to the

Premium class next month!

In the semiauto class, Fargacs continued to

dominate and finished as 1st Semiauto. Davis

slipped a bit in the final two stages and a

resurgent Paul Lemley, in his first RBGC Rimfire

match, finished with 5965 to take 2nd semiauto

over Davis at 5945 – just 20 points back.

For the third month in a row the RBGC Rimfire Benchrest program saw record attendance with 19

contestants in on-hand - and what a great day it was. The wind started out still, blew a bit, then went

still again but with some sneaky currents. Temperatures were reasonable for late July but did get

toasty by the end of the match.

The match consisted of four stages with the first two fired

at 100 yards on the IBS 200 yard target and the final two

stages being fired at 50 yards. The RBA target was used for

the Unlimited and Premium classes and the IBS 50 yard

target used for the Factory and Semi-auto classes. All

scoring was based on best edge methods with competitor

self-scoring. The 19 competitors were evenly divided

among the four classes and were accommodated on two

relays.

The Ultimate class started out with very tight scores as

Grant Toman and David Rabin fired first stage scores of 248-5X and 248-1X. Pat Patterson and Simon

Bailey were just one point back with Patterson at 247-3X and Bailey at 247-1X. In the second stage,

Bailey fired a clean 250 with 4X’s to tie Tomans aggregate separated only by X’s as Toman fired a 249-

4X. Patterson slipped out of contention on a sighting error allowing Rabin to take over third.

In the 3rd stage Toman posted another 249, this time with an impressive 20X, but slipped to second as

Bailey posted another clean target firing a 250-16X. The final card saw Bailey post a 243-12X while

Toman came back firing a 246-16X to take the match 992-45X over Bailey’s 990-33X. Both shooters

were satisfied with the result – Toman with the match win and Bailey with back to back clean stages

and a very competitive score.

Despite having five competitors, the Premium 22 class ended up being a grudge match between

Steven Gould and his Vudoo V22 and John McBrayer and his Vudoo V22. Gould jumped out to a two

point lead after the first stage firing a 245-2X over McBrayer’s 243-1X. After the second stage

McBrayer took the lead by firing a 242-3X over Gould’s 239-2X.

McBrayer extended his lead after the first 50 yard stage but slipped a bit in final stage to leave both

shooters tied with 950 points each. Gould’s better X-count in the final stage put him on top with a 950-

16X over second place McBrayer who finished with a 950-12X. While starting slightly off the pace,

Drew McKay was on a comeback path and ended with 19X’s two points back at 948.

In the Factory Class, Phill Bettis took a strong early lead in the two 100 yard stages to take a

commanding lead over newcomers Steve Hickom and Neal Shadden. (459-3X, 428-0X, 422-1X). The

momentum changed slightly at 50 yards as Shadden fired an impressive (in his first ever 50 yard

stage) 244-10X over Bettis 237-3X to narrow the gap. Bettis and his CZ457 was able to fend off the

Shadden and his Savage BTSV with Bettis finishing 1st Factory with a 924-9X over Shadden’s 898-13X.

The semi-auto class saw Shaun Forgacs with his Ruger 10/22 jump out to an early lead and was never

seriously challenged. Forgacs posted a 234-1X and a 239-1X at the 100 yard stages, followed by a pair

of 248’s in the 50 yard stages to finish 1st Semiautomatic with a 969-23X. Paul Lemley had some

difficulty with the 100 yard stages but did better at the 50 yard targets to finish 2nd with an 836-2X.

Special recognition to newcomer and Junior Woman Sofia Swanson who finished 3rd Semi with an

808-5X besting her dad, Kirk, who was shooting in the Premium class.

In July we fired a non-sanctioned Conventional 1200. We had five competitors, with attendance being down

because some of our regulars were competing in the American Smallbore Shooting Association Nationals.

The weather was hot and muggy, with low but quickly-switching winds.

In the sling class, Matt Whitley finished first with an 1188-61X. Simon Bailey, River Bend’s rimfire guru,

placed first in F-Class with an amazing 1194-89—meaning that he dropped only six points out of 120 shots

on the very challenging NRA Metric targets—and in so doing set a new range record for the highest F-Class

score in a 120-shot match!

The full match report is on the club’s match scores page:

www.rbgc.org/SmallBore/PreviousMatchScores.html

Our next match will be an NRA-approved Metric 1200 on Saturday, August 22, 2020. Juniors shoot for free

but must be accompanied by a parent or legal guardian.

Action Pistol

Our "Number 3, Phase 2, It's Not The Heat It's the Humidity" Match

Saturday, July 18th, the sun began early to bake the River Bend Action Pistols Bays. Thanks

to the Livingstone Clan who helped set up Bays 1 and 2 on Friday evening, we all had less

stress and toil Saturday morning. In spite of the current state of affairs across Georgia, 44

enthusiastic Action Pistol competitors gathered safely for some serious gun fun. For July in

addition to our regular family we had three new-to-action pistol competitors who came to

see what all the excitement was about. Limited, Ladies Limited, Limited Optics, Open Class,

1911 and one lonely Carry Class shooter with an uncooperative round that just didn't feel

like leaving the gun.

Bay 1 - Bang, Ding, Flop, Twist - Brought a twist to the steel madness with plate and pin

racks and that turning IPSC that always seems to only appear at slide lock. To complicate

matters, someone decided to change the rounds on targets numbers to add a little

confusion, see who paid attention during the stage briefing and who could overcome muscle

memory.

Bay 2 - Guy's Idea - This stage was an adaption of one of Guy Goolsby's creations ( we miss

you Guy! ). Door to Table to Load to Second Mag, to Swinger to Window to Walls to Running

and back to Walls. No problem. Most of the time. The intermix of paper and steel along with

some good aerobic exercise was enjoyed by everyone except the RO's.........

Bay 3 - Hold-Up - The famous briefcase came out of hiding to once again challenge everyone's

ability to follow instructions, manipulate their gun and most importantly, don't shoot the

briefcase. This stage was a good combination of manual dexterity, footwork, paper, swinging

steel and running -- the stuff of Action Pistol at River Bend.

Thank you again to all who pitched in to set up and to tear down the stages

Our Action Pistol traditions continued after the Bays were cleared with another great grilled

hotdog and chips lunch - prepared and served under proper COVID-19 Guidance which this

month included Watermelon For Dessert! Karen and John Busey brought a tub of red tasty

COLD melon. Our shooting match continues to support safe dining River Bend Style as an

event that no one wants to miss. Of course the match and lunch were topped off with door

prizes of ammo, cleaning gear, storage equipment. Another fine day with fine friends.

Thanks again to the Action Pistol

RO’s and Support Team plus all

the competitors who show up

early to help set up, get us going

and keep us safe and organized.

July’s match was, though hot, pretty comfortable because it was a dry heat. Several members regaled us with their trip to the ICORE Southern Region Championship and the experience of shooting on Jerry Miculek’s range in Lousianna. A well run match and lots of fun shooting with Jerry, who won Classic Division shooting an iron sighted 3” snubby! Alas, no celebrities for our match, but plenty of fun. Stage one, steel as always, was alternating between a falling plate and a small fixed plate. No two falling plates in a row permitted. Only THIRTY rounds needed, that is if you didn’t miss any.

Then on Bay 2 we had stages from the Southern Region Championship. We had an all “port” stage with 12 targets. Move, squat, shoot, reload and repeat. One stage was a fav of Jerry’s. A large triangle shaped shooting area with nine targets. You had to shoot from at least two points in the triangle. You had to decide on shooting from the third point or shooting on the move. Decisions. Decisions. And lastly a classifier that tested both near and far shooting as well as shooting in the open, from a barricade and through a port. Wrapping up on Bay 3 was a neat puzzle of four sets of three targets each along an alley way. How best to shoot depended on whether you had 6 or 8 rounds in your cylinder and whether you wanted to shoot at a distance or spend time moving closer. PLUS you got one second off your time for every “X” ring hit. I’m betting Jerry could have had a negative score on this one. As a chapter of the International Confederation of Revolver Enthusiasts, ICORE, we serve to promote enjoyment and satisfaction in action shooting competition with revolvers. We're about safety and having fun while improving our shooting skills. ICORE combines elements of the other pistol shooting disciplines into a fun competition exclusively for revolvers. Scoring is based on time with extra seconds added or subtracted depending on the accuracy of the hits. Steel plates as well as other reactive targets are also used in ICORE events. The July Light Rifle Match gathering started under warm July temperatures, partly cloudy skies, and little wind. Turnout

was on the light side with 13 competitors present. Usual range officer Don Coleman was unable to attend, so Match

Director Simon Bailey served double duty as Range Officer and Match Director. Dave Rabin had graciously agreed to

perform scoring responsibilities and with Fran Bailey running the Stat office, match operations ran well.

The July match is the State Championship match and is traditionally an 80 shot engagement fired at 50 feet. After a

brief sight-in period, the match got underway about 9:45 AM. Through the first two stages, David Purcell took a

commanding lead posting a 92-0X and a blistering 96-0X to hold a 10 point lead over Bob Morris in second with a 178-

2X, one point ahead of Intermediate Junior Ethan Wood at 177.1X.

King Stracke lead a tight pack of three with a 176.1X, followed by George Wilson and Rick Purcell both with 176.0X.

Bailey was calling the match at a fairly rapid pace in an attempt to

avoid the afternoon heat, so the midway point came quickly. After

four stages David Purcell had extended his lead with a 368-0X over a

resurgent Rick Purcell with a 354.2X. Morris had slipped a bit to third

place but with an impressive X Count - 351.5X.

Intermediate Junior and reigning state champion, Ethan

Wood held 1st Marksman, one point back at 350.1X, while

Wilson (344.1X) and Stracke (340-2X) both had some wide

shots to break up the 3 way tie. Kirk Swanson was posting

solid scores and posted an 89, only one point away from

posting his first ever stage score of 90.

In the 5th and 6th stage, David Purcell posted a pair of back to back 95’s (95.0 and a 95.1) to move well ahead of the

pack by the end of the sixth stage with a 558-1X. Wilson tightened his grip on 2nd place with a 93.1 and a 92.1 while

Rick Purcell moved back into third with a 527.02. Ethan Wood retained his hold 1st Marksman with a 526-3X, one

point behind R. Purcell. Swanson broke 90 for the first time in stage 6, firing a 92-1X to move into second Marksman

only two X’s behind Wood.

With a commanding lead and a solid final stage score of 93.0X, David Purcell won the match and the Open State

Championship honors with a final score of 740-1X. George Wilson finished also finished with strong final stage results

to finish in 2nd Place with a 715-6X. Swanson, having broken the 90 point barrier, fired a 94-0X and a 92-0X to move

onto the podium only 3 points behind Wilson with a 712-1X.
