A few of the newer vehicles A record crowd attended the Christmas party in December. We started the night with nibbles and chat and some very interesting trivia. Then a lovely dinner was served. Most partygoers then headed out for a drive around to look at the Christmas lights before heading back to the clubrooms for opening of the presents and handing out of awards.

FORD AUSTRALIA, THE END OF AN ERA Part 2 – Continued from December Reflection After contracting Dodge to supply $160,000 worth of parts, sales were slow. Dodge called in the money.

In response, Malcomson brought in another group of investors and convinced the Dodge Brothers to accept a portion of the new company, which was reincorporated as the Ford Motor Company in 1903. The Dodge brothers would go on to manufacture their own vehicles, which gained a well-earned reputation, leading Ford to buy out his shareholders.

Ford then demonstrated a newly designed car on the ice of Lake St Clair, driving 1.6km in 39.4 seconds and setting a new land speed record at 146.9 km/h. Convinced by this success, the race driver, Barney Oldfield took the car around the country making the Ford brand known throughout the United States.

Although automobiles had already existed for decades they were still mostly scarce and expensive. With the introduction of the Model T in 1908, it was reliable, easy maintained mass market transportation, and was a runaway success. It was Ford’s first automobile mass-produced on moving assembly lines with completely interchangeable parts. On May 26th 1927, Henry Ford watched the 15 millionth Model T Ford roll off the assembly line.

There were several cars produced since the founding of the company in 1903, although Ford started with the Model A there was not 19 production models until the Model T.

Although credit for the development of the assembly line belongs to Ransom E. Olds with the first mass produced automobile beginning in 1901, the tremendous advancements in the efficiency of the system over the life of the Model T can be credited almost entirely to the vision of Ford and his engineer.

Australia The Ford Motor Company of Australia Ltd known under its trading name, Ford Australia was founded in Geelong, Victoria in 1925 as an outpost of Ford Canada. At the time Ford Canada was not a subsidiary or a branch plant of the Ford Motor Company, rather it was a separate organisation and had its own distinct group of shareholders.

The company had gained all Ford patent rights and selling privileges to all parts of the British Empire, later the Commonwealth. It eventually established and managed the following subsidiaries:

• Ford Motor Company of Australia • Ford Motor Company of New Zealand • Ford Motor Company of South Africa • Ford India Private Limited

The first Australian Ford was a Model T, assembled from complete knock-down (CKD) kits provided by Ford Canada.

During World War II, Ford Australia ceased producing cars to commence military production to support the war effort. After the war, Ford Australia recommenced assembly of imported Ford Models including the Canadian V8.

In 1932 local designer and Ford engineer, 23 year old Louis Bandt, responded to a letter from a Victorian farmers wife asking for “a vehicle to go to church in on a Sunday and which can carry our pigs to the market on Mondays”. In response Bandt developed the idea of adding a truck like pick-up rear end to the Ford Coupe at the time.

During the Depression, banks would not extend credit to farmers to purchase passenger cars in the belief they were unnecessary luxuries. However, they would lend money for the purchase of “working” vehicles. The Coupe Utility was released in 1934 and known as the first ute.

When Bandt’s version was displayed in the US, Henry Ford nicknamed it the “Kangaroo Chaser”.

The North American Ford Falcon was assembled in Australia in 1960. The Australian and American product lines separated when the US Ford product proved inconsistent with Australian desires and requirements. The initial Falcon required extensive reengineering beyond standard right hand drive adaptation for Australian conditions. Since the release of the XA model in 1972, Falcons have been fully Australian designed and manufactured.

In Australia, the Ford Falcon and Holden Commodore have traditionally outsold all other cars and compromise over 20% of the new car market. The Laser was one of Ford Australia’s most successful models and was manufactured in Fords Homebush plant from 1981 until the plants closure in 1994. It outsold the Mazda 323, despite being almost identical to it because the Laser was manufactured in Australia and Ford was perceived as a local brand.

In New Zealand the Ford Laser and Telstar were assembled alongside the Mazda 323 and 626 until 1997, at the Vehicle Assemblers of New Zealand (VANZ) plant in Wiri, Auckland. The Sierra wagon was also assembled in New Zealand, owing to the popularity of station wagons in that market.

Under pressure for the Federal Government, Australia’s car makers were forced to collaborate to save money and become more viable. Nissan paired with Ford and Toyota paired with Holden. One of the products resulting from this union was the Nissan Ute based on the Ford Falcon XF of the time. The only thing Nissan was the badge, as it was made on Ford’s Broadmeadows production line. Nissan also offered a longer warranty than Ford, even though it wasn’t a Nissan product. Just 1951 were made with Nissan badges from 1988 to 1991.

The sixth genereation Falcon Ute went into production in

2000. Unlike the Falcons previous single body ute designs, the AU model separated the ute tub from the cabin to enable “tradies” to add their own toolboxes and trays. It was a stroke of genius designed to impede the rise of the Toyota HiLux style utes, which were gaining momentum.

In 2005 Australia signed a free trade agreement with Thailand, beginning the sales free fall of locally made cars and utes.

Ford Australia announced in 2013, that it would stop making cars after 88 years due to uncompetitive manufacturing costs and lacklustre sales. Production in the two Australian factories, Geelong and Campbellfield were scheduled to close in October 2016.

Ford Australia had registered losses worth over $600 million over the five years to the announcement. It was noted that the corporate fleet and government sales that account for two-thirds of large, local car sales in Australia are insufficient to keep Fords products profitable and viable in Australia. The decision affected 1200 Ford workers over the two plants. Source: “The Automotive Engineer”, Journal of the Institute of Automotive and Mechanical Engineers, Nov/Dec 2016

Sudoku 13 (Medium)

Sudoku 12 Solution

The Front Porch On the first day, God created the dog and said, "Sit all day by the door of your house and bark at anyone who comes in or walks past. For this, I will give you a life span of twenty years." The dog said, "That's a long time to be barking. How about only ten years and I'll give you back the other ten?" And God saw it was good. On the second day, God created the monkey and said, "Entertain people, do tricks, and make them laugh. For this, I'll give you a twenty-year life span." The monkey said, "Monkey tricks for twenty years? That's a pretty long time to perform. How about I give you back ten like the dog did?" And God, again saw it was good. On the third day, God created the cow and said, "You must go into the field with the farmer all day long and suffer under the sun, have calves and give milk to support the farmer's family. For this, I will give you a life span of sixty years." The cow said, "That's kind of a tough life you want me to live for sixty years. How about twenty and I'll give back the other forty?" And God agreed it was good. On the fourth day, God created humans and said, "Eat, sleep, play, marry and enjoy your life. For this, I'll give you twenty years." But the human said, "Only twenty years? Could you possibly give me my twenty, the forty the cow gave back, the ten the monkey gave back, and the ten the dog gave back; that makes eighty, okay?" "Okay," said God, "You asked for it." So that is why for our first twenty years, we eat, sleep, play and enjoy ourselves. For the next forty years, we slave in the sun to support our family. For the next ten years, we do monkey tricks to entertain the grandchildren. And for the last ten years, we sit on the front porch and bark at everyone.

Life has now been explained to you. There is no need to thank me for this valuable information. I'm doing it as a public service. If you are looking for me I will be on the front porch.
