One positive aspect of the expanded VFL . has been the increasing scheduling of matches on Friday nightsand Sunday afternoons . As a player I always felt disappointed at not being able to watch more V .F.L . matchesand I have felt the same frustration as a V .A .F.A . supporter. But now, at least we have a choice! Treasurer NoelRundle was seen late one Friday night watching No rt h go down to Fitz roy at V.F.L . Park . Last Sunday I wentalong to the M .C.G . with State coach Bernie Sheehy and selector Kevin Fitzpatrick to see the Hawthorn -Fitzroy clash . It was an inspiring game and it made me feel very proud to be involved in both Australian footballand the V.A .F.A. And as Jack Dyer wrote, "the VA .F.A . is the backbone of the game with players playing forthe love of the game" .

Ormond are now clear leaders in A Section after their 7 point victory over Old Paradians at Garvey oval .Both sides went into the match with big reputations and nothing happened to change people's minds . Theyplayed an exciting, hard-tackling contest and there was never anything in it . Ormond got a 2 goal break inthe last quarter which Paradians eventually matched but Ormond got the sealer near time on . David McDonaldat CHB was too good for his opponents and Scott Taylor in the ruck was prominent for Ormond .

At Elsternwick, Collegians gave notice that they're back with a 7 point win over Old Xaverians . The Lionsfluffed the first quarter and by three quarter time looked pretty vulnerable with only a 16 point lead . but theyhung on thanks to some spirited defence by Ga ry I rvine and Stuart Hinchen . Richard Herman with 6 goalstook his tally to 21 for the season .

Old Scotch wore down Bulleen-Templestowe to win by 40 points. With Scotch's ground out of action thisyear the Cardinals alternate with Old Xaverians at Swan Street . Scotch looked pretty ragged at half time trail-ing by 17 points but in a remakable transformation in the second half added 9 goals whilst keeping Bulleengoalless. Rob fuller started at CHB for Scotch but was moved back to counter Bullant Stephen Pace. Hemade three crucial errors on the full forward but to his credit fought back to be one of the Cardinel's best .Well done! Peter B rown was sparkling in defence.

De La Salle scored a 31 pqint win over Caulfield Grammarians who kicked 4 goals for the afternoon . Itwas a day made to order for De La Salle CHB Mick Deveson .

North Old Boys notched their first points with a 16 point win over Uni Blues who found it difficult to counterthe windy conditions at Royal Park .

I am not pleased with my tipping performance last week. I hate to admit it - only 4 out of 10 !

Man:ellin and the Blacks clash at Bulleen in the match of the day . Marcellin was surprised by Banyule s

Peter French

Previews today's matches

To quote "Nuggett" Stephens "Real football conditions at last" and they certainly brought more than theodd upset .

In B Section Ther ry and Marcellin went down to Ivanhoe and Banyule respectively which meant a first lossfor the former and first win for the latter .

In A Section Old Paradians lowered its colours to Ormond to leave the 'Monds' outright leaders of the Sec-tion whilst Collegians scored an important and courageous win over Old Xaverians to announce their returnto something like last season's form . Not that the Xavs were disgraced but the Lions persistence and abilityto kick goals against the wind saw them home .

Bulleen-Templestowe showed glimpses from all accounts and No rth Old Boys upset the Blues well laidplans . What can I say of Caulfield's form - four goals even against De La Salle is woeful and lets hope theyimprove markedly today for their first outing at headquarters for the season .

Match of the day will be played at the Gunn Reserve where De La Salle will have an uphill battle to holdOrmond . Despite the good form of its defence led by Deveson, McHen ry and Bar ry the Monds will scoreenough to win and maintain its position as competition leaders . In Schukroft, David McDonald and the Mehr-ten brothers, who often save their best for De La, Ormond has enough avenues to goal to set up victory althoughthe D's will not go under easily as Ormond would readily attest . However at home and with a seemingly perfectblend of youth and experience Ormond will be too good for an ageing De La Salle .

Uni Blues have a tough assignment at home against Old Paradians who are certain to rebound stronglyafter last weeks loss . Old Paradians cover the Blues at every turn although Yandell is sure to continue hisimpact on a match despite close attention from both Grills and Way. Dale McCann is experienced enoughto handle either Curnow or Tyquin and the close checking Exton will keep Mclnnes quiet, although Gustand Wallis will require watching closely. There's no other result for mine than an Old Paradians victory.

Similarly who could expect Caulfield to find a form reversal that would deny Collegians another 4 points .The Lions were most impressive last Saturday, in particular Tregear, Richard Herman, Pollock whilst ruckingand the return to form of key defenders Williams, Schober and Hinchen is a big plus for Bruce Ferguson .Herman's clash with the in form McClelland will be the highlight of the game and Caulfield will really needa lift especially from the likes of Fish, Matthews, Berzins and Konis if it is to cause an upset .

No rt h Old Boys has every chance of winning its second game despite the home ground advantage favour-ing Old Scotch who will have more than parking problems by 5 p.m . tonight . Scotch despite victories overthe bottom sides, has not been impressive on its other outings and I've a hunch that No rt h might now be onthe march . Je ro me Griffin is back to best form whilst Turnbull, "Gus" Car roll and O'Rourke are all potentialmatch winners . There is no doubting the class at Scotch but they seem to struggle when faced with a chanceto cement themselves as one of the top sides and so I'm sticking with North .

Old Xaverians make the trip to the Ted Ajani Reserve to meet the inexperienced Bulleen-Templestowe . TheXavs will be smarting after last weeks loss, a loss reminiscent to their B Section grand final effort . Certainly they'llenjoy a day without wind . They should win and win well . G re etham Bourke, Dann if he can get a full game,Carlin and Steve Cu rt ain will be too talented for the Bullant defence and Tiernan and O'Sullivan will givethem the edge around the packs. Atkins is beginning to stamp himself as one of the better centre men in thesection, although in Mayne, Farley, Collins, Smyth, Bell and the big hearted Kazuro the bullants have thepotential to worry sides and will have gained much from last weeks first half against Scotch . However, Old Xavsjust cannot allow a slip up here and they know it and I'm afraid a first win for the home side is not on my card today .

In B Section Ivanhoe at home will have the edge over St . Kilda CBC. The 'Hoe who have started poorlylifted last week to score a fine wine over Ther ry and a win today will give them that extra breathing space . TheSaints were unlucky in going down last week to old rivals St. Bernards, by the narrowest of margins and arebound to give it a real go today. However Ivanhoe at the Boulevard is just too tough an assignment .

conacity last week and having lost to the Blacks in a practice match may not face today's clash with the confi-Jence required . They have welcomed the return of Chris Slatte ry and have Ebe rt , Gallagher and Sadukiplaying well . However Blacks after an indifferent start are starting to hit their straps and their big man strengthand dominance in key positions might just give them the edge .

St . Bernards who have now won two on the trot will face Fawkner at home with plenty of confidence. KevinIlAorriison's boys have inexplicably lost their way of late and will need a form reversal to beat the Bernardswith its decided home ground advantage and great local support, its St . Bernards for mine .

In the other games Parkside will continue on its winning way despite Banyules fine win last week and Ther-ry is bound to bounce back and at home will be untroubled against an inconsistent Old Trinity.

Kew faces a test against Monash Blues at Clayton in the match of the day in C Section . Monash will surprisethe Browns with its pace and teamwork and this is bound to be a great game. However, Kews endeavour andpersistence and mosquito brigade led by Busuttil, skipper Burden and B rea should give them the game.

Old Brighton will cement its place in the four by beating AJAX and one could not see the Rovers downingcompetition pacesetters Old Melburnians . Balaclava must be a chance to beat Thomastown, but as the gameis at Thomastown I'm sticking with the Bears .

In the final game Old Haileybu ry will be desparate for the points over Melbourne High and at home willopen its account for the season .

Only 10 winners last week with a poor effort in B Section . Nonetheless I can only improve!

REVIEW OF MATCHES PLAYED MAY 2 (ROUND 4 )Conditions for Round 4 were very different from those experienced in each of the first three rounds . Winds andsome rain led to some notable reversals of form which resulted in some surprise winners.D Sectio nNo rt h Brunswick's greater accurancy enabled them to inflict the season's first defeat on Preston whilst St .Kevin's recorded their second successive victory with a thirteen point margin over Old Camberwell . Old Ivan-hoe moved to top position as a result of their fifty one point defeat of Elsternwick while Coburg with superiorskill in the wind, moved off the bottom when they easily defeated Heatherton . In the remaining game BulleenUnited showed good form to defeat Old Mentonians by fifteen points.E Sectio nFor the second round in a row I picked the E Section card . This section, unlike most others in the competition,is quickly dividing itself into top and bottom groups . Brunswick moved away to undisputed leadership whenit crushed Powerhouse. At the other end of the section Peninsula moved off the bottom following its sevenpoint victory over Clayton . Old Geelong just held out West Brunswick who lost by only four points as a resultof their comparative inaccuracy. State Bank defeated Univ . High School by thirty five points while Old Essen-don's five goal margin brought St . Bedes back to level points with three other sides . This game was an exce-lent one which reflected well on all players and both coaches .F SectionLeaders Doveton defeated Williamstown by twenty nine points while Aquinas accounted for CommonwealthBank by a wide margin . ANZ Bank lost their fourth consecutive game, this time to Univ. Reds, who incidentallymust be flattered to read that they are also third on the A Section ladder! With more than a ten goal marginover Footscray Inst., Old Ca rey received a percentage boost . St . And rews lost heavily against second placedWhitefriars who showed their visitors no mercy. The same can be said of LaTrobe Univ. who disposed of St .Leonards by kicking the highest score of the day .G Sectio nIn a very even game Port Colts outlasted De La Salle to win by three points while leaders Bloods held St .Bernanis goal less and kicked eleven themselves . Old Scotch's inaccuracy meant they have slipped behindthe leading bracket and that Old Melburnians by their win moved off the bottom . Collegians despite inac-curate kicking, defeated Marcellin by thirty seven points while Monash Whites were too talented for Old Halley-bury as the students recorded a forty seven point victory. Kew's victory over GTV9 resulted in the brown andgolds remaining undefeated and GTV9 moving to twelfth place .H Sectio nMy prediction for the Ther ry-State Bank game was way off the mark as the Bankers proved far too strongand won by one point short of fifteen goals . Old Geelong proved too strong for North Old Boys who remainwithout a win while Eltham College overpowered Powerhouse/Balaclava by nearly twenty four goals as theyjustified their section leadership. Second placed Old Brighton experienced little difficulty in defeating Rich-mond Central by fifty one points. St. Kevins just managed to defeat Old Xaverians thanks to their greateraccuracy while Bulleen Templestowe won on fofeit from CBC St . Kilda .Under 19 Section 1Old Xaverians overwhelmed Collegians to maintain Section leadership while the only other undefeated sideUniv. Blues met little opposition from No rt h O.B . and won by thirty three goals .Old Paradians Green despite a slow start powered home to inflict a heavy defeat on De La Salle, while BulleenTemp. overcame the small Melb. High School ground to win by fifty three points . In the other game Marcellineasily accounted for *ormond which meant I tipped the section card .Under 19 Section 2Therry accounted for Old Melburnians by thirteen points after an evenly contested game. Thomastown provedmy selection of St . Bernards quite fallacious when they defeated the Saints by over five goals . Only inaccuracyprevented Old Haileybu ry defeating Old Scotch who won by two points despite having eight less scoring shots .

the Univ. Blacks defeated Old Brighton by four goals.Under 19 Section 3Whitefriars continued its winning streak when it accounted for the young Fawkner side while Ivanhoe consoli-dated its position among the second leaders by defeating the youngsters in the Old Paradians Purple side.Hampton Rovers defeated Williamstown by the narrowest margin after a game which was always of a high

standard . Monash Blue's inaccuracy robbed it of any chance of victory against Caulfield Grammarians whosewinning margin was eight goals .

REVIEW OF ROUND 5 (9th May 1987)D Sectio nNear neighbours No rt h Brunswick & Coburg meet on the Allard Reserve. Both sides won last week but I be-lieve North Brunswick has shown pre 1987 form and I select them . P reston wil be keen to return to the winninglist and I feel they will do so at the expense of Old Camberwell . Two of the section leaders Old Ivanhoe &

St . Kevins will meet for the first time in many years at Chelsworth Park . The home ground will assist Old Ivan-hoe who because of their greater forward strength are my selection . Neighbours Heatherton & Old Mentoni-ans despite their loss last Saturday should be strong enough to win and thus maintain their position in the topfour. In the remaining game Bulleen United should be able to defeat Elsternwick especially as Bulleen ap-pear to be recapturing some of last season's form .E Sectio nFor a top game today State Bank journey to Brunswick. The 'Wicks have done all asked of them this seasonand today I suspect they will be too strong for the Bankers. At Clayton a new E section victor must result asneither the home side nor the visiting Powerhouse has won a game this season . Powerhouse has been themore consistent and should win today. Old Geelong, having its best season for a long time should be abletodefeat Peninsula especially on Como Park . In a repeat of last year's Grand Final Old Essendon will playUHS Old Boys on the Brens Oval . I believe Old Essendon will again prove victorious . West Brunswick awaitSt. Bedes who must overcome the Royal Park winds to return to the winning list . Statistically St . Bedes hasthe more impressive 1987 record and given its motivation to stay with the leaders the Blue & Reds should takethe points after a tense game.F Sectio nWhitefriars fce a danger gqme today following their long westward trek . Williamstown are playing with moreconsitency this season and are capable of causing an upset . I'll take the punt and select Williamstown whichwill please my resident club reports . Leaders Doveton should not encounter undue difficulty in defeating Comm .Bank even on the Harry Trott Oval . I do not expect ANZ Bank to offer serious resistance to Aquinas who mustbe wary of Albert Park conditions in their quest for victory. St. And re ws will be anxious to atone for last week'sloss against LaTrobe Univ. At home the Saints should be able to take the points . Old Ca rey makes the longsouthern journey to St. Leonards and should be rearded with the points as St . Leonards have not been ableto continue their early form . In the other game Univ. Reds will be able to win over Footscray Inst . who haveyet to have a win .G Sectio nDe La Salle will be anxious to atone for lat week's loss and should do so today at the expense of Collegians.Po rt Colts will be too strong for St . Bernards while in an important game I select leaders Bloods to defeatOld Scotch . A win by the Bloods will further enhance their top position . Monash White travel to Marcellinand the visitors should be strong enough to win . Kew visit Old Haileybu ry and should return to Victoria Parkwith the points. Old Melburnians bolstered by their first victory play GTV9 in what should be a very close game .With no great confidence I select Old Melburnians.H Sectio nState Bank will only have to maintain last week's form to defeat Bulleen Temp . In similar vein Old Geelongshould be able to defeat Therry while the leaders Eltham College should be able to defeat North O.B . bya wide margin . Old Xaverians following two consecutive defeats face CBC St . Kilda who had to forfeit lastweek . This is the chance for the Xaverians to return to the winning list nd I believe they can . The main gamein the Section will be that between St. Kevins & Old Brighton . Old Brighton's 1987 form is marginally thebetter so they are my selection . Richmond Central journey to Powerhouse whose form has little to recom-mend it . Richmond Central should take the points after a closely fought game .Under 19 Section 1 -Neither De La Salle nor Ormond has much form to go on . I suspect Ormond may be the strong side so Iselect them to win . In an important game Univ. Blues are at home to Old Paradians Green . Both sides haveplenty to recommend them to their supporters. I know the Paradians are a talented group so I select them towin . Melb . High School Old Boys at home should take the points against No rt h O .B . who are not enjoyingtheir best season .Marcellin at home will prove too strong for Collegians whose form last week was poor. Leaders Old Xaveriansjourney to Bulleen Temp . where the Red & Blacks face a severe test . The Xaverians appear to have the abilityto win because of their better 1987 form .

Under 19 Section 2Old Melburnians & Banyule should play an even and interesting game. To select the winner is difficult and'I favour the "Navy Blues" without any confidence . Therry visit at . Bernards with the knowledge that victor ywill take them to section leadership The game should be a good contest and for victory I favour Therry . Anothereven game should be that between Old Scotch & Thomastown . The winner will be right with the section lead, ers while the loser will revert to middle of the ladder status . At Yarra Park I select Old Scotch . Two sides whohave settled down well will meet at Murrumbeena when CBC St . Kilda are at home to Univ. Vlacks . Homeground advantage will be a vital ingredient in St. Kilda taking the points. To be able to defeat Old Brightontoday Old Haileybu ry forward must be more accurate with their kicking . At home I favour Old Haileybury.Under 19 Section 3Whitefriars will be tested by Hampton Rovers although they will proved talented enough to take the points .Fawkner make the long journey to MOnash Blues . Although I must select the students I feel the Fawkner p!ay-ers are in a position to develop their game by following Terry Mills' instructions . Williamstown at home to Caul .field Grammar should be too strong after a close match, while in the remaining game Ivanhoe will prove tooskillfull for the Old Paradians Purple and thus develop their status as a top section 3 side .

Umpires Cornerwith Brian Goodman

The axeman is on the job again, he informs methat the 2nd Annual Umpires Golf Day, held at San-dringham a couple of weeks ago, was a huge suc-cess. About 40 umpires tried tempering the courseand John (Angry) Horwood got the best result withan impressive 88 off the stick, but the winner was KenPitcher with a score of 93 less his handicap of 28 (PatBond wants to talk to the Handicapper) for a total of65. 2nd Prize went to the (Bandit) Tim Bell with 91less 25 for total of 66. The Longest Drive went to(Capser) Steve Clinch, and Nearest the Pin went toSteve Segota (a name well known around amateurranks) . The Dummy Award went to our Vice PresidentWanye Henry, he apparently left after the 12th hole .

A great day was had by all and again we thank(Q.C .) Frank Costigan for organising such a greatevent. Special thanks to the Elsternwick Hotel fordonating a bottle of port, (you can't win them all Co-!in King)!

***Umpires Corner would like to apoligise to Frank Costi-gan for leaving him off the social committee list in thelast Edition - sorry about that!

Today is a special day for umpire Brandon Reid, who will officiate in his 100th match . Brandon start-ed umpiring in 1983 and has umpired 12 matchesrunning the boundary and 88 as a field umpire. Thehighlights of this very talented 20 year old are :-B Section Grand Final (Boundary) - 1983B Res . Preliminary Final (Field) - 1985B Res . Preliminary Final (Field) - 1986U19 Grand Final (Boundary) - .1986.and Running 3rd in the 800 metre race held by theV.A .F.A . on Grand Final Day in 1986.

One thing I cannot understand is how Brandon isso thin and so fit, because just before the MelbourneUniv . V South Australia Univ. match last year, Bran-don downed 4 pies, and 2 sausage rolls, must havea wonderful digestive system .

Congratulations Brandon (Pieman) on reaching 100games and may there be many more highlights instore for you .

150 TO "WISEY "Every year those who scan the "C Reserve" sharp-shooters lists will see a venerable name, that of OldHaileyburians' Rod Wise. "Wisey" has maintaineda competitive enthusiasm for a career which todayreached the coveted milestone of 150 games . He hasalready kicked over 200 goals, and mainted theBloods' tradition of a veteran reserves full-forward inthe footsteps of the less delicate Andrew Williams. Not only has that dark and devilish beard remainedon the criminologist's face, but also those sure ball-skills, straight kicking and elusive bauling . And"Wisey" is far from finished yet, if the purchase ofa new jumper - No. 26 of course - and boots isanything to go by. In recent weeks he has had hisold contemporary, the Sausage Dog Steve Marshall, lurking beside him in the forward line.

Now a dedicated father, which precludes most train-ing activities, Rod ;s talking and desperation has playsits part in Rosscoes Raiders winning their first fourin succession . Let's hope our man who is intelligentby name and nature can top off a wonderfuyl careerwith a little September success to succour.

100 TO LESBulleen Templestowe congratulates Peter "Les"George on reaching 100 games. Peter who wasrecruited from local Junior Club Bulleen started withthe U19's but rapidly worked his way into the Seniorswhich he has established himself as one of the bestfull backs in A Section . With his attacking and aggres-sive style he has been a headache for many a for-ward, continually drining the ball out of his play. Onlyinjury has delayed him reaching this milestone earli-er, but all at Bulleen Templestowe congratulate himand say "Nice one Les! "

***100 GAMES AT ORMOND

All at Ormond would like to congratule Craig Tonkinon playing his 100th for the club last week .Craig first joined our club in 1976 as a member of ourU17 side and therefore progressing through our U19grade, played his first senior game in 1980 . If not forhis shocking run of injuries, the dashing half forwardwould have played significantly more games for theclub. Craig also provides great service to the club offthe field as he is one of our most popular clubmen .Well done "Putya" and we hope there are manymore games to come .

100 GAMES AT WEST BRUNSWIC KAll at West Brunswick congratulate Ga ry Buckley onplaying his 100th game today against St . Bedes .Gary's milestone is reached when he is having hisbest season with the club and with the added respon-sibility of Vice Captain of the seniors, his on field per-formances, have gone from strength to strength .Buck's is a natural footballer with blitzing pace, su-perb balance and a great ability to read the play. Thesupporters go wild when Buck's goes for one of hissixty yard dashes down the ground to put the ballthrough the big sticks and many of the 'experts'around the club think we still haven't seen the bestof this exciting footballer. Well done Bucks and letshope we see a lot more champion games from you .

200th GAME FOR DE LA STALWARTThe third game of the year against Old Xavs had

a few highlight for De La Salle Salle supporters, however Pat Maher's 200th Game for the Clubprovided the members with something to cheerabout . "Tubby" as he is affectionately known

to the top. He has the distinction of being the only

he game and the club has not wilted . His friendly

throughout the club was recruited from St . Anthony'sGlenhuntly in 1977 at the tender age of 20 . Since thenhe has played 195 senior games and 5 reserve games(all in his first year) out of a possible 205 matches .

,From the beginning Tubby has been an integral pa rt`,of the De La style of football that has taken the club

player to have played in all five A Grade permierships#or the club and had the honour of captaining the vic-°torious 1984 side. Along the way Tubby has alsopicked up a Club Best & Fairest and 2 "Most Con-sistent" awards. As he now approaches middle ageand uses that blitering speed and long kicking to itsbest effect in the back pocket Pat's enthusiasm for

rirose is often found in club publications and his hous eis always open for De La supporters . CongratulationsRAT on a fantastic effort, from everyone concernedwith Amateur Football, especially those from DE LA .

In Fact "Sparrow" still does some freelancecommittee work and has made many a stirringspeech on the club's future over a cold pot! Fast ap-proaching the twilight of his career and losing hairon a daily basis, Steve threatens every year to seeout his playing days with a VFL club. Well, anothersummer sitting by the phone has gone without thatvital call and Bairdy is still at the Tech, and we madehis Captain again just for safety! They say home iswhere the heart is, and Footscray wouldn't be thesame without "Sparrow" getting a swag of kicks ev-ery week . Well done Steve, and may there be anotherBaird milestone fifty games up the track .
