The Hot Seat

How did you end up in Barcelona?I’d been told that there was a great course at La Massana [Barcelona’s Art and Design School], and when I saw the old La Llotja building, I thought it was so beautiful that I stayed here for six months making lithographs. I fell in love with the city. I was a painter, but I soon realised it was hard to make a living from art.You went from artistic ideals to the reality of corporate commissions. I was a fi gurative artist by nature, and all the art here was abstract. I became a designer to pay the rent. I didn’t know you could make as living as an illustrator, but I got published in Germany, and Coca-Cola Australia commissioned a poster. Is it essential to have a readily identifi able style? It’s been very useful. But you have to be careful: sometimes clients just ask for more of the same. Luckily, I have clients who let me evolve.Your work has obvious links to

surrealism and magic realism. As a Colombian artist, was this inevitable? To a certain extent, yes, it’s all there, in our literature, our music and the children’s stories we grew up with. It’s in our genes. But I know others with different styles. If Colombia is colour, what is Barcelona?Sophisticated design, beautiful Modernista façades… Walking through the streets is a lesson in the history of design.Even near La Rambla, where you live? The architecture is beautiful, but it’s sad to see everything being turned into apartment hotels, and the old antiques shops converted into shops with neon lights. That depresses me.

39 years old. Painter & designer. Resident in BCN for 14 years.

Three aces In the shadow of the big-name chefs with their Michelin stars and international reputations, three young cooks are making their mark. By Ricard Martín

Among chefs, a 33-year-old is a promising youngster. But a handful of genuinely youthful cooks are doing amazing things in Barcelona – and they’re not even out of their twenties. Antonio Romero Grandma’s cooking, simmering stockpots and all, has never looked as contemporary as it at Suculent. Antonio Romero, 26, from Nules in Valencia, was commissioned by tapas maestro and co-owner Carles Abellán to update the spirit of the classic Barcelona eating house. The young chef completed his culinary studies in Lleida, and in 2009 worked a stage at

El Bullí. When El Bullí was closed he worked with Juan Mari Arzak and in Valence (France), at the triple-starred Pic. That’s when he got the call from Abellán – and earlier this year he reached the finals of the Chef of the Year contest at the Girona Forum.

Sergio Humada At 28, this San Sebastián native is resident chef at Via Veneto, the Catalan temple to haute cuisine with a history going back almost 50 years. Humada is the son of Basque chef Juan Mari Humada, who among many other achievements won a Michelin star and became one of the fathers of

modern Basque cuisine, a pioneer of pintxo-style tapas. His son has worked at Can Fabas, Mugaritz, and Celler de Can Roca. After travelling all over Spain, he touched down at the Hotel Alma in Barcelona, and found the freedom to develop his highly personal style. ‘When I’m allowed to do what I want, my Basque side comes out. Fish dishes, confits ... my cooking is based on a few ingredients carefully put together. And most of all, it’s to be enjoyed. I like giving everything an unexpected twist, to get the exact flavour I’m looking for.’ J. M. Rodríguez GuerolaTo have achieved as much as this young chef by the age of 28 is no mean feat. Guerola is bright, creative and 100% Catalan. Born in Sants – a Barcelona neighbourhood that boasts many a traditional cake shop – his fi rst contact with the world of baking was making torrijas at his grandparents’ weekend cottage. But it was as a 16-year-old working at

Miramar under Paco Pérez that he acquired a real passion for patisserie. There followed stages at Hofmann, Balaguer, Torreblanca and Fauchon, but he acknowledges Pérez as his mentor. La Pastisseria Barcelona, which he runs with his father, should be garnering the same media attention as a newly Michelin-starred restaurant. Guerola puts his philosophy into practice without contraints: ‘Lightness of touch, individual portions, always focusing on high-quality produce, a reasonable price point, and well-defi ned fl avours.’

Tamarit, 91 T. 93 325 26 59. Around €20

The brains behind this new bodega is Albert Adrià, who only has to cross the road to enter his flagship restaurant / tapas experience Tickets. The Adrià name is a synonym for gastronomic innovation, and this bodega is no exception, while also remaining true to the dishes and flavours that reigned supreme in Barcelona eateries at the beginning of the 20th century, whether smoked, salted, pickled or charcoal-grilled. We started out with a delectable cruixent d’arròs (crunchy sheets of fried rice) followed by small and compact Tarragona white prawns and olives from Cala Montjoi – two bombs of flavour, one stuffed with anchovies, that would set the mealiest of mouths a-watering. To round out the meal we tried two of the latest menu additions. The bocadillo de calamares (a squid mini-baguette) is a take on the classic Madrileño snack, and could hold its head high in the Spanish capital, while the Gos de Tura is a Catalan version of the hot dog. –Daniel Vázquez Sallés

A perfect launch padBarcelona fashion label Colmillo de Morsa opens a new space in Gràcia, which is also a launch pad for some outstanding young designers. By Laia Beltran

Talent, drive, ambition, tenacity, self-confi dence: just a few of the qualities you need to launch an independent fashion label. And they’re qualities possessed in spades by designers Elisabet Vallecillo and Javier Blanco, who have turned their ready-to-wear label Colmillo de Morsa into something of a cult. Their rise has been short but spectacular: they’ve shown three collections at Madrid’s Ego Fashion Week, scooped a prize at the infl uential Who’s Next show in Paris, and secured points of sale in Moscow and Taipei. Their latest project is their recently opened boutique-studio-showroom in Gràcia. Palacio de Crystal, their autumn/winter collection, evokes Victorian conservatives of iron and

glass – hence the interplay of cut-outs and transparent fabrics in shorts, tops and skirts with architectural outlines: sober, geometrical and conceptual.

But Colmillo de Morsa isn’t a boutique consecrated to their own label. Instead it’s a space open to an impressive range of talented young designers, with whom they share tastes, interests and a particular take on fashion. In record time they’ve brought together a fascinating group of clothes, jewellery, accessory and shoe designers. If you want to fi nd out what’s cooking in Barcelona’s fashion world, a trip to Colmillo de Morsa is a must.

Gaudí’s latest hitThe Torre Bellesguard, Gaudí’s Modernista castle on the slopes of Tibidabdo, is open to the public for the first time. By Eugènia Sendra

Martin the Humane, the last king of the House of Barcelona, took up residence at the foot of Tibidabo in 1409, following the counsel of scholar and humanist Bernat Metge. Half a century later, on the same site, Antoni Gaudí built the Torre Bellesguard, a building that was commissioned by Jaume Figueras, his friend and a noted figure in the Catalan Renaixença. Now the hillside refuge opens its doors: the Guilera family, current owners of this Modernista masterpiece, have decided to share part of their private treasure, conscious of its contemporary relevance. At Bellesguard we get a sense of Gaudí working with complete freedom, inspired by medieval castles, and using Gothic Revival elements to

design a building based on straight lines, broken by the volumes of the slate cladding of the façade and the small balconies decorated with stained glass. The architect included religious symbols and allusions to Catalanism, one of the elements that a newly-created research group is studying.

As well as an unaccompanied visit with an audio guide, there are guided tours to the attic spaces, including access to the roof terrace. Here, as well as the tower crowned by Gaudí’s cross (and an evocative dragon’s face), visitors can enjoy stunning city views.

BCN and all that jazzThe Voll-Damm Barcelona International Jazz Festival is back! By M. Salicrú & M. Junyent

The Voll-Damm Barcelona International Jazz Festival celebrates its 45th year from 19 Oct to 1 Dec, filling venues all over the city with music and jazz-related activities of all description. The programme is packed with treats: we’ve already seen Chucho Valdés and his Afro-Cuban Messengers, and the star-studded all-female trio of Geri Allen at the piano, Esperanza Spalding on bass and Terri Lynn Carlington on drums, but there’s plenty more to

come. There’s Israeli double bassist Avishai Cohen’s new project, a string quartet, who will be performing at BARTS on 22 Nov, and veteran jazz drummer Jack Dejohnette’s group with clarinettist Don Byron (15 Nov at BARTS). There’s also a show from folk singer The Tallest Man on Earth, (Fri 29 Nov at BARTS), and an homage to Gershwin performed by pianist Alfredo Rodríguez and the Vallès Symphonic Orchestra (Fri 23 Nov at the Palau de la Música). Art Before the horizon

Many artists have painted the horizon, each facing a horizon that is always the same, but is also their own. The Joan Miró Foundation presents ‘Before the Horizon,’ a selection of 60 works from some of the greatest artists of the 19th and 20th centuries – Arnold Böcklin, Claude Monet, David Hockney, Antoni Tàpies, René Magritte, and Miró himself, among many others – all with the horizon as a common element. The title ‘Before the Horizon’ is a reference to Devant le temps. Histoire de l’art et anachronisme des images, Georges Didi-Huberman’s study of anachronism in the history of art. Drawing on Didi-Huberman’s ideas, the exhibition displays the works in the form of anachronic conversations between pictorial, photographic and sculptural representations of the horizon, from the Romantics and the Impressionists down to the present day. The point of departure is three large-format works, one by Modest Urgell – Miró’s teacher – one by Joan Miró, and a third by contemporary Catalan artist Perejaume, a disciple of both, who completes the conversation from his own postmodern perspective. –M.Junyent

are just the highlights of a festival that will close with the first ever performance by a brand-new Big Band led by young singer and saxophonist Andrea Motis and Joan Chamorro. Catch the closing concert on Sunday, 1 Dec at the Auditori.

Beyond the concertsAs well as the huge number of concerts on the festival programme, there’s also an impressive list of associated events. The Liceu conservatory is offering master classes with outstanding jazz musicians: guitarist Kurt Rosenwinkel, saxophonist Miguel Zenón and vocalist Luciana Souza. The Gran Hotel Havana, on Gran Via, will become one of the festival’s principal venues. On Sunday mornings you’ll find jazz activities for the whole family, in the company of the San Andreu Jazz Band. On Friday evenings throughout November you can enjoy a cocktail to the rhythm of live swing, and on 7 Nov, there’s a blues dinner with music provided by Erwin Seerutton and the Setzània vocal group. Check the websites of the municipal libraries at Vallcarca and Pentitents, where experts from different backgrounds will be giving talks on their vision of jazz.

A quarter of a century of jazzThis year will mark the 25th anniversary of a festival that has been run from the beginning by Barcelona-based music promoters The Project. ‘Jazz has been this company’s business from the very start,’ says Tito Ramoneda, co-director of The Project, who made their debut as promoters in 1988, putting on Chet Baker at Sala Zeleste. Since then autumn in Barcelona has been synonymous with jazz, and the city has hosted some of the biggest names on the international scene.

3 letters, 2 roomsJuan Arnau shuts down Row14, but opens Ker Club, in the centre of Barcelona. By Ricard Martín

Juan Arnau, club promoter and entrepreneur – possibly the one you could accuse of having an ideology – has always defended dancing and going out as essential therapy. The nightclub business is in his blood: his grandparents opened a dance hall in Aragón shortly after the Civil War, which his father turned into a disco, and which he helped to turn into one of the biggest techno clubs in Europe.

The importance of room 2His flagship, Row14, is closing its doors, but will live on as a club night around Spain and Europe. Arnau predicts that his new venture, Ker, will be ‘a little different to what we’re used to in Barcelona’. Rather than a disco with a cocktail bar, it will be ‘a luxury cocktail bar with a dance floor’. The main room holds 1,300, and a second room, a cocktail bar with a DJ booth, is

the big draw. Arnau says of star DJs like Laurent Garnier and Carl Cox, ‘when they get to this level, they want to do something special. Carl Cox wants to play house instead of techno, he doesn’t always want to have to be the festival version of Carl Cox.’ And in this cocktail bar with room for 200, that will be a regular possibility.

The main room will play more ‘commercial’ music – note the quotes: Arnau is clear that Ker isn’t for youngsters who want to pogo and take off their tops. ‘This club is for the over-25s, those who grew up with electronic dance music and don’t want to go back to rock, but who want to hear more sophisticated sounds, with roots in soul and funk.’
