Alaskans know seafood and Bridge Seafood Restaurant stands alone. Spanning one of Alaska’s most popular sport fisheries, Ship Creek, Bridge’s connection to locally caught salmon is readily apparent. From May 26 - Aug. 31, guests dine on fresh Alaska seafood as anglers cast for their own dinner in the waters of the downtown creek below. All dinner entrees begin with a trip to the all-you-can-eat starter bar, featuring Bering Sea crab and an assortment of house-made salads. An extensive appetizer list includes: fresh Alaska oysters, king crab cakes and ale-battered halibut just to name a few. The wide variety ensures your meal is always fresh. Pair any selection with a local microbrew or fine wine. With produce fresh from the Matanuska Valley and desserts rounding out the menu, not all the selections are from the sea, but all are equally delicious.

Fat Ptarmigan passionately pursues the best pizza. From a wood-fired oven at the center of the restaurant, house-made mozzarella and specialty ingredients come together atop a crisp, golden crust.

The pizza menu incorporates classics and packs in some surprises as well. The simple, cheesy goodness of a Margherita, the spicy Hot Coppa or Pepperoni pies will please purists. And brilliant creations like the Duck pizza – topped with braised duck and caramelized onion – or the Steak & Stilton – New York strip and blue cheese – entice the adventurous.

Fletcher’s

The names of explorers feature prominently in Anchorage. Captain James Cook’s name graces the body of water flanking the coast of the city and one of the city’s finest hotels. Even Cook’s cohorts gained a level of fame; Fletcher Christian may be best known for the mutiny on the Bounty, but in Anchorage his name is now synonymous with great food in a relaxed atmosphere. Fletcher’s restaurant offers smart appetizers, gourmet pizzas and hearty dishes that would quell any uprising.

Unwind in the welcoming warmth of an English-style pub. A maritime influence extends beyond the restaurant’s name to favorite dishes like the Seasonal Fresh Fish Piccata and the Grilled Prawn Risotto. However, you’d be missing out if you skipped over the pizzas and paninis on the menu. Factor in wine by the glass, fresh microbrews and cognac, and even famous adventurers will delay their next voyage for another taste.

Once a single quirky American diner in London, Hard Rock now spans the globe like the headline act of a world tour. Heaps of Hickory-Smoked Ribs, center-cut USDA choice steaks and fresh Alaska fish make this menu a set list to please any audience. Classic American cooking with a Southern flair reflects co-founder Isaac Tigrett’s Tennessee roots and branches out to embrace the best of Alaska cuisine.

The Fruit & Yogurt Parfait with house-made granola or a breakfast croissant can turn even the groggiest individual into a morning person. Daily espresso and coffee specials are poured using K Bay Coffee from Homer, Alaska. Grab a cup to go or stay and hang out.

When lunchtime rolls around, soups are prepared from scratch, sandwiches are built to order and salads are made fresh. Moist Boar’s Head meats make the Turkey, Swiss & Cranberry Sandwich or the Roast Beef and Sun-dried Tomato Panini excellent choices. This lakeside area has drawn Alaskans looking for a good time since before the neighborhood was even part of the city. Joe Spenard’s dancehall was the hot spot in the 1910s, and the famous Fly By Night Club kept ‘em coming in the ‘70s. Modern day fun-seekers can still head to Spenard for good times; now the Fancy Moose lounge is the place to be.

Classic food favorites are complemented by some surprises bound to satisfy. Go for the crispy fried calamari, crab cakes or fish and chips. Or savor a house-made beef, bison or reindeer burger. Entertainment is on the menu too; TNT Pub Night brings live music to the lakeside hangout four nights a week. Drink specials and a rotating roster of beers provide a good mix. Soak up the sun on the waterfront deck, and watch floatplanes zoom off bustling Lake Hood bound for Alaska adventures.

Anchorage entertains with shows sure to surprise and productions to rival those of cities in the Lower 48. Fall through spring, the Alaska Center for the Performing Arts books the best of Broadway and beyond. Locales feature headlining acts ranging from the obscure to the celebrated. Community theatrical performances showcase home-grown talent in cozy venues year-round.

Throughout the year, catch traveling performers, comedy shows and live music at numerous nightclubs, pubs and coffee houses. Celtic, blues, acoustic, R&B and bluegrass, among others, resonate throughout the city where the scene is as diverse as the Alaska landscape.

Entertainment spills into the streets during the longer summer season. Locals and visitors alike explore the popular outdoor markets and festivals, eclectic crafts and art fairs are aplenty and outdoor concerts get your toes tapping and fingers snapping. Under the bright midnight sun, this northern city hosts fun activities that stretch late into the evening.

Sports fans can catch the big game on a personal table TV or one of the many large flat screens while testing their taste buds on five-alarm hot wings. Or drop the remote and pick up some tickets; Anchorage boasts two semi-pro baseball teams, a hard-hitting pro hockey team, club-style boxing and the University of Alaska Anchorage Seawolves.

Alaska Experience Theatre

Alaska is so large, it takes a huge screen to contain even a part of it. Luckily, the Alaska Experience Theatre captures it beautifully. Fantastic films put you on the runners of a dogsled, nose-to-nose with amazing Alaska wildlife, or leave you awestruck under the majesty of the northern lights.

March 27, 1964. At 5:36 p.m., the second largest earthquake in recorded history rocked Alaska, quite literally reshaping the landscape. You can see the effects of that massive event, hear first-hand accounts, and even feel the tremors in your seat.

And with live music, improv comedy, and special screenings of the most popular feature films, there’s more than one way to shake up your visit to Alaska with a stop at Alaska Experience Theatre.

Alaska Native Heritage Center

The Alaska Native Heritage Center offers guests a comprehensive look at Alaska Native culture. From traditional practices to modern life, learn more about Alaska’s original inhabitants. Gain a deeper understanding of Alaska Native life past and present through engaging storytelling, authentic Native song and dance, artist displays and Native Games demonstrations. Watch an award-winning film and check out the exhibits before stepping outside to visit six authentic life-sized Native dwellings. It’s a village unlike any other in Alaska; each is an example of traditional construction from the regions of the state.

Tucked along the shores of Lake Tiulana, you’ll hear stories from long ago, learn songs with the heartbeat of Alaska, and build a better understanding of life in the state. It’s a special place drawn from the traditions, knowledge and ingenuity of Alaska Natives and as varied as the people of the Last Frontier.

The voices of Alaska’s soldiers, sailors, Marines, airmen and Coast Guardsmen are at the heart of the Alaska Veterans Museum. From the first Anchorage soldiers who marched off to the trenches of Europe after the city’s founding in 1915, to the men and women of the Alaska Territorial Guard and on to modern day service members, Alaska is a unique post. In what other military museum would World War II vehicle models include both a sprawling aircraft carrier and a finely crafted dogsled like those used on Alaska patrols after the Pearl Harbor attack? All for only $3.

The uniforms on display range from the garb doughboys donned “Over There” to contemporary Class A uniforms, but also include the seal skin mukluks and animal hide mittens of Major Marston’s “Tundra Army.” Through these items, intimate snapshots of camp life and the words of individuals serving in Alaska, this small museum shows the huge service and sacrifices of military men and women.

Spread across 200 acres in the Portage Valley, moose munch through Willow, and a trio of massive brown bears saunter through the brush, cooling off in nearby ponds. The Alaska Wildlife Conservation Center is home to herds of elk, reindeer, musk oxen and bison, eagles, fox, porcupines and other animals. Dedicated to conservation, education, and quality animal care of Alaska’s wildlife, the center is a window to the many amazing species living in Alaska.

With such huge spaces, animals behave much as they would in the wild. The setting has advantages for human visitors as well; it’s a fantastic spot for envy-inducing photos of Alaska wildlife.

Enjoy daily programs that range from animal feedings to informative talks on local fauna. Learn about the Wood Bison, long absent from Alaska, that are being reintroduced to the wild this year. As this project comes to fruition, the center is a hive of activity.

Alaska Zoo

In the wooded foothills of the Chugach Mountains, the Alaska Zoo puts visitors face-to-face with local animals. With wolves, lynx, wolverines, moose, musk oxen, eagles, reindeer, river otters, seals and much more tucked along forested paths, the Zoo is Alaska’s showcase of natural majesty. It’s the only place in Alaska to see all three resident species of bear – black, brown and polar – at once.

Amur tigers, snow leopards, Tibetan yaks and Bactrian camels are exotic, but the Zoo’s special emphasis on animals from the Arctic and sub-Arctic regions means each finds a new home in Alaska.

The Zoo’s free shuttle runs all summer from downtown, so getting there is a snap. For a truly unforgettable experience, reserve a special behind-the-scenes tour for special encounters with the animals and expert insight from the amazing staff. This is furry and feathered fun, Alaska style.

Bear Square is one center loaded with a whole lot of fun. Start your Alaska adventure with the chance to hit the mother lode gold panning in the middle of the city. Test your resolve with a virtual hot air balloon ride or reel in the big one on a fishing simulator. Catch a film in the Bear & Raven Adventure Theater; Alaska’s natural majesty and wild animal residents are the real stars of the show, but don’t be surprised if the special effects put you in the middle of the action!

Even after the credits roll, there’s more to see and do. Zip through the surrounding downtown streets; Segway tours of the city depart from Bear Square, so be sure to reserve a spot.

Looking for an icy treat? Cool off and get your licks in with Alaska-made ice cream; it’s a tasty end to a sweet stop at this entertainment hub.

The Sitzmark Bar & Grill

In skiing’s early days, an impression made in the snow by a skier falling backward was called a “sitzmark.” Small wonder the name is applied here. It’s a hip venue at the base of Alaska’s premier ski destination. And with great talent on stage, you’ll want to plant your butt here a while. A local institution, “The Sitz” has been at the heart of good times in Girdwood for 40 years.

Under the swirling glow of a painted ceiling dubbed the “Sitzstine Chapel,” musicians from Alaska and beyond draw crowds of folks unwinding after a day of adventures in the Glacier Valley. Performances could be folk or reggae, hip hop or EDM, but good times transcend all genres. The “best deck in Girdwood” lets guests kick back and enjoy a beverage from a full bar, listen to great live music, and enjoy the view of the surrounding Chugach Mountains.
