First of all, welcome to the Rainhill Gala 2009 programme and thanks for
supporting this year’s event. By buying this programme, you are helping to
fund the Gala event which means we can raise much needed funds for local
good causes. Last year we raised £3,232.64 for Willowbrook Hospice and
this year we hope to help more groups and organisations in our community.
Although Willowbrook will remain as the main charity of the Rainhill Gala
this year, we aim to make smaller donations to local groups in your
community to help fund special projects, buy new equipment etc. We will
ask local groups to submit an application after the event if they want to be
considered for funding.
The Gala is run entirely by volunteers and without them, the support of
local businesses and of course you, we wouldn’t have such a great event at
the heart of our community. We must thank our friends at St Ann’s school
for allowing us to host the event there this year due to our need to move
from the Ex-Services for more suitable premises. A great big thanks goes
to the Eckies for hosting the o8 event, see all the pics on the website!
Disabled parking is available at the Millennium Centre, or Park&Ride from
Rainhill High School. The first bus leaves the High School at 11:15.
Please take some time to have a look at the official Rainhill Gala website
and we look forward to seeing you on May 25th. The fun starts at 11:30

Tribute to Mike Doyle By Cllrs Joe De‟Asha, Steve Glover & Barrie Grunewald
Mike Doyle was a passionate man. He never did anything half-heartedly, it was important to ensure that “The Business” was completed to everybody‟s satisfaction. He never refused any offer to contribute his services for the community he loved, Rainhill Village.
We, as fellow councillors, were always amazed how he fitted so much into his life. More than two dozen organisations benefited with Mike‟s expertise. One of his greatest loves was the wellbeing of the local children, and he made it his duty to fight for Rainhill‟s kids at every opportunity.
We will miss his vast knowledge, built up through 30 odd years asking How? Why? When? and Why Not…!!! The village will miss Mike.
During the last few years Mike had silently endured very poor health. He kept up his rigorous workload and only Julia was aware of his deteriorating condition. We would see him eat a banana or a sandwich between meetings, then off he would go to another one..!!
We are proud that the trophy for “It‟s a Knockout” is to be called the Mike Doyle Memorial Cup. It is a fitting tribute and the winning team will need to put in 100% effort to win it, just as Mike always put in 100% into everything he did.

A FANTASTIC ACHIEVEMENT You will have seen in the local papers i n N o v e m be r t he f a n t a s t i c achievement of a donation in the sum of £3,232.64 to Willowbrook Hospice made possible by the Rainhill Gala o8, and thanks goes to everyone and who took part in the event who made it such as success. There were many people involved in the event from the planning stages, right up to and after the event who made it all possible. Thanks has to go to the hard working committee (pictured above presenting the cheque to Willowbrook Hospice staff) which included members of Rainhill Ex-Services, Rainhill Rotary, Rainhill Parish Council, the Bridge Barbers, Rainhill Model Railway Club and the staff and volunteers from Willowbrook Hospice. There are also a lot of people behind the scenes who made the day a success including the local Police CSO‟s, St John Ambulance and of course the dozens of local businesses who provided prizes, sponsorship and support, without which the event would not have taken place. But of course, the most important people involved in the event, and the biggest thanks goes to you, the community of Rainhill who turned up and supported the event, nearly 4,000 of you in o8 and we hope even more will attend this year at our new venue and support the 2009 event in your community. See you there!!!
The North West Branch of the Retired Grey-hound Trust began re-homing greyhounds in January 2008 with a small group of volun-teers. Our charity works to re-home ex racing dogs. Our main aims are to raise awareness and let people know what fantastic pets this very gentle and loving breed can make and also to raise funds to support the retired dogs
until their forever homes can be found for them. Up to the end of February the group has managed to re-home 120 greyhounds. The North West Branch will be at this year‟s Rainhill Gala offering advice and support for greyhound owners and information for anyone who would like to know more about re-homing a greyhound.
The Trust also offers a safe and reliable dog and cat electronic chipping service at a rate of up to 50% less than most vets and the team will be on hand at the Gala to give you more information about the service and to make an appointment at a local centre. Following the death of their daughter 24 years ago, Marjorie and Arthur Hurst formed the Helen Marie Friends charity after their daughter Helen died of a brain tumour at the age of just 12. All of the money raised is spent on St.Helens children. Mrs Hurst said the fund commemorates the "lionhearted spirit" of their daughter whose greatest love was to help others less fortunate than herself. During her fight against a crippling brain tumour her parents, family and friends realised just how much help was needed to try to alleviate the suffering of children.
The couple, who live in Islands Brow, and their charity members have in the last year raised around £6,000. Fund raising events over the years have included sponsored walks, barn dances, fun runs, treasure hunts, jumble sales, fairs, football and cricket matches and fashion shows.
Mrs Hurst said: "The charity ensures that every penny raised in St.Helens stays in St.Helens where it is most needed. If you know any sick child who needs help please contact us and if you feel you could assist by helping out at any of our events we would like to hear from you."
Last year the charity raised over £400 at the Rainhill Gala o8 which helped to buy much needed equipment and holidays for sick and disabled children. The very popular „hook-a-duck‟ will be back again this year with a prize every time!!
Anyone who wants to contribute to the fund raising efforts of Mr and Mrs Hurst can contact them on 01744 734155 or see them at this year‟s Rainhill Gala.

Willowbrook Hospice Willowbrook Hospice cares for people over eighteen years of age with life-limiting illnesses living in the St Helens and Knowsley area.
As a Charity, we make no charge for our services, but rely on our own fundraising efforts and a modest contribution from the NHS. This enables us to provide support to patients and their families according to their individual needs. We were delighted to be involved in the Rainhill Gala last year and the donation of £3,232.64 was fantastic and we would like to thank everyone at Rainhill Gala and the people of Rainhill who supported the event in 2008.
We will once again be a major presence at the 2009 event and will have a stall manned by our volunteers (pictured) so please come and see us on the day.

POSTER COMPETITION
We tasked the year 5 pupils from all the primary schools in the village to come up with the front cover for the Rainhill Gala programme. The number of entries received was staggering and the judges had a really difficult time choosing the winner. After hours of deliberation, the judges chose the design seen on the front cover of this programme by Hannah Dudley from Longton Lane Primary School. Hannah won a family pass to Knowsley Safari Park & a free Gala wristband. Her design will also be blown up to a huge A1 size which will be displayed in the village until the Gala.
The runners up were Leaha Doyle from St Ann‟s Primary and a joint effort from Emily Jones and James Campbell from Oakdene Primary.
Well done and thank you to everyone who took part. All the entries were fantastic and it was really hard to pick the best ones. Congratulations to Hannah for winning the competition and as a
runners up prize, Leaha, Emily and James will all receive complementary wristbands to use on the funfair at the Rainhill Gala on May 25th.
Thanks to Knowsley Safari Park for kindly donating the prize for the poster competition.

A BIG THANKS!
We would like to express our gratitude to St Ann‟s C of E School for allowing us to use their school grounds to host this year‟s Rainhill Gala. Without the help and cooperation of the school governors, staff and Head Teacher Mrs Wilkinson, the event would not be able to take place. We chose St Ann‟s because of it‟s central location and excellent playing field, and we‟re so glad we did as we couldn‟t have asked for a better team to work with. Thanks St Ann‟s!

KEEP RAINHILL BUSY CAMPAIGN!
You may have noticed the colourful posters displayed in village shops over the last
few months urging people to shop locally and we spoke to local shopkeeper and
campaigner, Nicola from Nicola’s Shop & Save in Dane Court.
We asked why she felt there was a need for this campaign and she told us that if the
community do not support their local shops, that Rainhill Village Centre will soon
close for business forever. The recession is hitting us hard and the fact that the
HSBC has now closed, together with the car park charges levied at the Dane Court
precinct, there seems to be less reason to use the local shops. However, Nicola
added, what people don’t realise is that they can get everything they need right here
in Rainhill, and if you compare the prices to the supermarkets, you will find that
most of the time goods are cheaper right here in your own community! I have
checked the goods in my shop against the supermarkets and found that nearly all
were cheaper right here! Another point is that you can get quality goods right here
in Rainhill and the Village Butcher on Warrington Road is a prime example, there’s
just no comparison to the quality of meat available there to the supermarket
‘pre-packed’ versions!
So support your village shops and shop local. You’re always guaranteed great
service and you’ll be doing your bit to keep local shops open for local people.

RAINHILL GUIDES
After Guiding first started in Rainhill in the 1920‟s, the interest grew so much that in 1973, a new Guide hut was erected on the corner of Stoney Lane. This building is now in desperate need of replacing and many people in Rainhill have helped to raise funds for a new hut. The total needed is around £200,000 and we‟re a long way there, but we need your help to succeed .
CAN YOU SUPPORT US WITH FUNDRAISING FOR OUR NEW BUILDING? If you have any fund raising ideas or would like any further information regarding the Rainhill Girl Guiding Association please contact Irene on 07778 443 410 or see us at the Rainhill Gala 2009.

Rainhill Model Railway Club The Club was founded in 1995 and from an initial 21 people who attended the inaugural meeting in St Ann’s Parish Rooms, we now have a membership of 50 and have a waiting list. The Club meets on three evenings a week in designated Club rooms and the members are busy constructing a number of layouts in gauges N (1:60) to G (garden railway size), as well as working on personal projects.
The Club holds two exhibitions a year: one a family show at Christmas time with Santa as an honoured guest and a main show held over two days on the first weekend in March. Both these events take place in the Rainhill Village Hall. In addition to our own exhibitions the Club attends other events put on by model railway clubs and organisations all over the North of England and Wales. Since inception, the Club has supported many charities such as Willowbrook Hospice, NCH and Rainhill Guides to name but three. The members see the Club as an essential part of the Village scene and are proud to be part of the Rainhill Gala. More information on the Club and contact details may be found on the Club website www.rainhillmrc.org.uk

Who Are We? Ever wondered who runs the Rainhill
Gala? Well we’ll tell you……. The Rainhill Gala started off as a fun day in 2006, but
with the help of the Gala partners and a host of local
volunteers in the community, the Rainhill Gala has now
grown to a annual event the village can be proud of.
The principal volunteers are Ann, Julie, Becci and Tina
from the Bridge Barbers, Cllrs DeAsha, Glover and
Grunewald from Rainhill Parish Council, Mal Steward
and Dave Oakes from Rainhill Rotary, Colin Oldfield
from the Rainhill Model Railway Club and Nicky
Saunders & Helen Mellor from Willowbrook Hospice.
Until his sad passing late last year, Cllr Mike Doyle
was also an active committee member and worked hard
towards the success of the Gala o8.
The other committee members are made up from local residents
including Steve Clarke, Phill and Gaynor Lowton, Jean Smith, John
Mullen and representatives from other local organisations including the
Guides and local schools.
We would love to hear from anyone
who wants to help - see page 31.

Rainhill Rotary Club The Rainhill Gala was inspired partly by the many successful years of the Briars Hey Gala, and we at Rainhill Gala are delighted that the knowledge and experience gained by our friends at Rainhill Rotary is now playing a major role in the running of the Rainhill Gala. For the last two years, members of the Club have helped to plan and run the event together with our team of volunteers helping us to raise thousands of pounds for charity.
The Rainhill Rotary also raises many thousands of pounds for local good causes from its many annual events including the Rainhill Bierfest which in 2008 was "another sell-out success” and included over 80 beers with names like Cheeky Pheasant, Drunken Duck and of course, Rainhill’s Finest.
Many of us will also associate the Club with the visit to Rainhill of Santa Claus who tour the village around Christmas collecting for local charities and one of the pictures below features the visit by Santa to the village centre on Christmas Eve.
Once again members of the Club will be helping us at the Gala, but this time using all their expertise in pulling pints at the Bierfest to help to run the beer tent.
Thanks for all your hard work and here’s to you fellas!

WE NEED YOU!
The Rainhill Gala wouldn’t happen without the support of so many
volunteers from our community, and this is where we need you!
The Gala committee meets once a month to plan for the annual event, and we are always looking for new members to join our committee. You don’t need any special skills or experience, you just need to want to do something positive in your community. Our current volunteers come from many different backgrounds and together make a wonderful team, but as the old saying goes,
many hands make light work!
If you don’t fancy making a regular commitment but still want to help, why not volunteer to help us on the day? We need many people to run the event safely including stewards, stall holders & bar staff. If you can spare just an hour on the day either this year
or even next, please get in touch.
If you can help, please ring Steve on 07951 324 599 or email
