    Prefaceou are now entering a new era in the Ancient and Accepted Scottish Rite of

    Freemasonry. ScottishRiteMasonry isaphilosophyof life, teaching the relationships

    thatyoushouldmaintaintowardyourfellowman,aswellasyourrelationshiptoGod.

    Whatis"Scottish"abouttheScottishRite?therthan thename,andonedegree,practicallynothing isScottish in theScottish

    Rite. While it is often asserted that the rite began in Scotland, it seems to have

    developed in France. The "Rite of Perfection", as itwas then known, consisted of

    twentyfive

    degrees.

    This

    system

    of

    Freemasonry

    eventually

    crossed

    the

    Atlantic,

    where

    it

    evolvedintowhatwenowknowastheAncientandAcceptedScottishRiteofFreemasonry.

    TheLodgeoftheDoubleHeadedEagleastheScottishRitehasbeencalledwasfirstformedin

    Charleston, South Carolina, in 1801 by 9men. From this fledgling start began one of the

    greatest Fraternaljourneys inmodern times. The Southern Jurisdiction of the Ancient and

    AcceptedScottishRiteisnowoneofthelargestandmostprestigiousgroupsofFreemasonsin

    theWorld. Itshistory,ritual,andtraditionshavespannedthehistoryofthisCountry. Asthe

    Countryhasgrownandflourished,sohastheScottishRite.

    Andwhile theCountryhas facedchallenges, theScottishRitehasnotbeenwithout itsown.

    ThehistoryoftheScottishRite includeshowtheScottishRitehashelped influenceAmericas

    middleclass culture and the nation's democratic, civic, andmoral values. It has produced

    outstanding leadersandsomeprominent individuals. Whilewecouldspenda lotoftimeon

    thehistoryoftheRite,perhapsourtimewouldbebestspentgivingyouanoverviewofwhat

    youareundertaking asamemberwhodesires todevelophis skills as anofficer. Formore

    officer, you should know these requirements. One of the recommended readings is the

    Statutesof theSupremeCouncil. Asanew32ScottishRiteMasonyouwereauthorized to

    wearthecapofa32Mason. Remember,thereisnocapfora14ScottishRiteMason. The

    caps in the list above are awarded to select32 ScottishRiteMasonswho aredeservingof

    recognitionforfaithfulyearsofservicetotheRite. Withtheexceptionofthefiftyyearcapthe

    capsareawardedfromblacktored,thentowhite.

    TheK.C.C.Hcaprepresentsanhonorarytitle. Thereisnodegreeassociatedwithit. Recipients

    ofthishonoraretitledHonorable. Awhitecapisemblematicofthe33oftheScottishRite,

    andthe

    recipients

    of

    such

    an

    honor

    are

    titled

    "Inspectors

    General

    Honorary"

    or

    simply

    Illustrious. It isgenerallygiven to thoseKnightCommandersof theCourtofHonourwho

    haverenderedextraordinaryservicestotheRite.

    TheSupremeCouncilhas set forth rules thatgovern the correctwearingof the cap. When

    wearingthecap,itshallbeconsideredtobeapartoftheapparelofthewearerandshallnotbe

    removedduringthepresentationoftheflagwhilethemembersstandatattentionwiththeir

    righthandovertheirheart,ortherecitationofaprayer,withthehandsandarmscrossedas

    taughtyouinthe18thdegree.

    Thewearingofcapsisconsideredproperatreunions,statedmeetings,etc. It is improperfor

    thecap

    to

    be

    worn

    in

    public

    unless

    authorized

    by

    the

    Sovereign

    Grand

    Inspector

    General

    or

    DeputyoftheOrient.

    GreetingsandSalutationscross thejurisdictionScottishRiteMasonswhen in formalmeetings,dinnersorother

    occasions introduce speakers,members, dignitaries, etc. by simple phrases or titles.

    This isan importantpartofour traditionsand canbe confusingnotonly to thenew

    memberbutourofficersaswell. Wholebookshavebeenwrittenonmilitaryhonors,salutes

    andceremoniestowhichScottishRiteMasonryhasborrowedmuch. Similartothemilitarythe

    ScottishRite

    has

    titles,

    honors

    and

    an

    order

    of

    introduction.

    In

    its

    simplest

    form,

    Scottish

    Rite

    Masons introduce each other as Brother regardless of rank. However, in more formal

    settingssimplerulesareprescribedasfollows:

    introduction should follow the rule above rank, name, position and any special titles. For

    By dropping the 32, 32 KCCH, or 33 IGH, we are not losing anything. If anything we are

    following tradition and gaining more respect of the time people have invested in us by

    attendingourfunction. Theyarenotattendingtohearthelengthytitlesofallpresent. Toearn

    theBlackCapyoumustbea32ScottishRiteMason. Tobe introducedasHonorable,you

    mustbea32KnightCommanderoftheCourtofHonour. TobeintroducedasIllustrious,you

    While it supports the mission of the local Valleys,

    there is a hierarchy to maintain the flow of

    informationandcreateacohesivemanagementsystem. As

    youmayknow,thereare33menwhoareelectedtogovern

    theorganization to whichwebelong. Oneof thesemen is

    elected

    to

    the

    title

    Sovereign

    Grand

    Commander.

    His

    job

    is

    the maintenance and well being of the entire organization.

    ItishisvisionandleadershipthatwillleadtheFraternityinto

    the future. His selection is no accident and he did not get

    thereovernight. JustasyoubecameaScottishRiteMason

    finishing your initial degrees as a 32, so did the Sovereign

    Grand Commander (SGC). He rose to the rank and

    decoration of Knight Commander of the Court of Honour

    within his Valley and then was nominated and elected to

    receive his 33 Inspector General Honorary later in his

    journey.

    membernotelectedtoapositionmaybeappointedtoapost. Formore informationonthe

    order of succession, please read the most current copy of theTransactions publishedby the

    SupremeCouncil.

    Outsidetheelectedlineofofficers,theSupremeCouncilhasseveralpositionswhichshouldbe

    noted. MostimportantlytheGrandExecutiveDirector. WhilewewilltalkalotabouttheValleySecretary inthisdocument,theGrandExecutiveDirectoractsmuch likeacombinationofthe

    Location: LakeCity,Florida

    CurrentLocation: Jacksonville,Florida

    ext to the Valley, the Orient will have the greatest

    impact on the individual Scottish Rite Mason. It is

    herethattherepresentationtotheValleysfromthe

    Supreme Council happens and the representation from the

    Valleys to Supreme Council is accomplished. This is done

    through the Sovereign Grand Inspector General

    (SGIG)orDeputyfortheOrient. Hisjobistoprovide

    leadershiptotheentireOrientandnotjustonepartofit. He

    will appoint representatives or individuals he has trust and

    confidence in to run the operation of the local Valleys. The

    three individuals he will appoint to these very important

    positions are the Personal Representative, the Valley

    Secretary (in Pensacola we call him the General Secretary),

    andtheTreasurer.

    is

    the

    pick

    oftheSovereignGrandInspectorGeneral(SGIG)orDeputytomaintaintheoperations

    and leadership of the local Valley. He is the eyes and ears of the SGIG and will do

    whatever is possible to ensure the success of the local Valley. The Valley Secretary, while

    appointedbytheSGIG,isrecommendedbythePersonalRepresentativeasapersonhe

    feelswillworkwellwiththemembershipandhimself. TheTreasurerwhilealsoappointedby

    theSGIGisrecommendedbythePersonalRepresentativeasapersonhefeelshecan

    trustwiththefinancialwellbeingoftheValley.

    ExecutiveCommitteeThe Executive Committee of the Valley of Pensacola consists of a chairman (The Personal

    Representative), the heads of the Four Coordinate Bodies, the Prior of the Consistory, the

    Treasurer, and two atlarge members. The Executive Committee meets monthly on the

    Scottish Rite Reunion is

    comradeship among those of like

    NotonlydowecelebrateasaFraternity,wearebringinginthenextgenerationofScottishRite

    ourfuture. Withouttheabilitytoholdareunion,ourFraternityasweknowitwouldceaseto

    exist. As an officer, you need to understand the importance of the reunion and support its

    missionbyyourattendanceandinvolvement. Isitthemostimportantpartofbeinganofficer?

    Yesandno. Yes,becauseyourparticipationsetsthetoneforournewmembersandthosewho

    arepresentingourritual. No,becausemembershipalonewillnotkeepourFraternityathriving

    organization. Weneedtobalanceitwithleadershipdevelopment,philanthropy,fellowshipand

    goodmanagementtechniqueswhichyouasanofficerwillberesponsiblefor. Remember,the

    purposeofareunionisnotsolelyformakingnewMastersoftheRoyalSecret. Itisalsousedto

    reteachthelessonsofthedegreestoourexistingmembers.

    Reunionsrequire

    manpower

    Valley

    to

    the

    new

    initiates.

    No

    matter

    how many candidates we are initiating, the degrees take a host of people to perform them

    properly. Individuals are needed to perform both speaking and nonspeaking roles. As an

    officer, you are expected to assist in the successful presentation of the work of the degree

    teams for your Body in the Rite. That may mean opening in due form, making sure the

    candidatesunderstandwhatthelineofofficersdoes,whotheyare,andmuchmore.

    archmentpatentsarebepresentedtoallmemberswhoattainthe32nd

    Masonic Center. While traditions have changed, the parchment represents the members

    successful admission to the Fraternity. Patents are generally issued with the parchment

    nowacumbersomeitemtotravelwith.

    Some Valleys present the patent flat suitable for framing. Others will present the patent

    neatlyfoldedandplacedintheTuckashadbeendoneintheearlydaysoftheFraternity. There

    isnorightorwrongway;simplythepreferenceoftheValleytopresentamemorabletokenof

    membershipinourFraternity.

    IfthePatentorcertificateisissuedincorrectlyandisnottheresultofanerrorontheValley's

    Form330reportwhichispreparedbytheValleysSecretary,theSupremeCouncilwillreplace

    thePatentatnochargetotheValley.Otherwise, iftheerrorwastheValley's, itshouldremit

    thefeeforacorrectedPatentalongwiththeorderforareplacement.

    If a member loses his patent or it is destroyed by some calamity, duplicate patents may be

    embership is the life blood of any organization, although some will say it is

    finances. Whilethestatementistrue,ourScottishRiteexperiencedependsupon

    our members. I cannot place enough emphasis on the Membership programs.

    Membershipis

    much

    more

    than

    paying

    your

    dues

    and

    coming

    to

    meetings.

    It

    is

    the

    fellowship,

    brotherhood, working together, and sharing together that makes our organization unique.

    Sure,youcanbeamemberofoneofthebusinessorganizations likeRotaryorKiwanis. Or

    evenamemberoftheMoose,orElks. But, it istheuniquehistoryweshare,thepledgeswe

    maketoeachotherandthebondswedevelopthatcannotbeattainedelsewhere. Thatcan

    onlyhappenthroughourmembershipinthisorganization.

    Dues

    Dues are an important part of any Valley. Without the dues, we could not financially exist.

    Essentially,

    the

    dues

    cover

    expenses

    associated

    with

    the

    critical

    infrastructure

    of

    the

    Valley

    including,butnotlimitedtoutilities,maintenance,insurance,percapitatax,etc. Theduesmay

    notcoveralltheValleyexpenses. InordertofundsuchthingsastheKnightoftheDoubleEagle

    program,educationalseminars,civic,communityandcharitableworks,theValleymayhaveto

    relyonfundraisers. Butrestassured,theduesplayanimportantpartintheValleysabilityto

    provideforthefinancialsecurityoftheFraternityandourValley.

    DuesCards

    hestatutesoftheSupremeCouncilprovidethatnoBrotherofthisJurisdictionshallbe

    permittedtovisitorattendhisownoranySubordinateBodyofthisRiteunlessheisin

    possessionofan identificationcardwhich is issuedasareceiptfordues(DuesCard)

    bytheSupremeCouncilthroughtheSecretaryofaSubordinateValley. Thiscardmust

    bearthedateofthecalendaryear,andalsothesignatureofthemember. Thiscard,alongwith

    a Patent issued by the Supreme Council, will entitle one to admission to any Body of the

    Scottish Rite recognized by the Supreme Council of the Southern Jurisdiction of the United

    StatesofAmerica.

    While we as officers may get to know our membership fairly well, it is important that we

    periodicallyChecktheduescardsatthedoor. Ifwefindanexpiredduescardwhenchecking

    admission to theLodgeRoom we can identify this not only to theBrother,butwemaygain

    valuableinformation

    should

    the

    Brother

    be

    in

    need

    financially

    and

    not

    able

    to

    pay

    his

    dues.

    We

    are charged with the administration and maintenance of the Valley and as such one of our

    responsibilities is the maintenance of good order. If a member has not paid his dues by

    December31stofthecurrentyear,hemaybesuspended.

    Increasingourmembership

    Thefollowingarewaysinwhichwecanincreaseourmembershipnumbersordecreasethem.

    Thechoice isyours. However,theyarepresentedhere,asallofficersshouldunderstandthe

    impacteachofthemhaveonourorganization.

    Affiliations

    WeacceptmembersfromotherScottishRiteBodies. Itisimportanttounderstandthatwhena

    memberdesirestoaffiliatewithourBodies,certainactivitiesneedtobeperformed. Whileitis

    not the duty of the officers of the Valley, it is important for the officers to understand the

    process.

    When a Brother from another Valley within thejurisdiction of the Supreme Council of the

    ScottishRite,SouthernJurisdictionwishestoaffiliatewithourValley,certainproceduresmust

    befollowed.

    The

    forms

    necessary

    are

    available

    with

    the

    Valley

    Secretary

    or

    Supreme

    Council.

    UndernocircumstancesshouldaBrotherbeaffiliatedwithoutpresentingeitheraCertificateof

    GoodStandingoraDemitfromtheBodiestowhichhebelongs. ContacttheSecretaryofthe

    Scottish Rite Bodies if a Brother, who is a member of a Scottish Rite Valley in another

    jurisdiction,indicatesadesiretoaffiliatewiththeValleyofPensacola.

    ABrotheraffiliatingwithBodiesofourJurisdictionwhoseformermembershipwaswithBodies

    owingallegiancetoaSupremeCouncilotherthanourown(see"SupremeCouncilsandOtherin

    AmitywithMotherSupremeCouncil"intheTransactions)isrequiredbyourStatutestopresent

    aDemitfromhisformerBodies,orapatentfromanotherSupremeCouncil.

    Withreferencetopetitions foraffiliationor initiation fromBrethrenunderthe Jurisdictionof

    theSupremeCouncilsofEngland,Scotland,orCanada, theSovereignGrandCommanderhas

    issuedspecificdirectivesonthissubjectintheReferencesectionoftheSecretarysmanual.ii

    CertificateofGoodStanding

    TheStatutes,providefortheissuanceofaCertificateofGoodStanding,whichmaybeusedin

    placeofaDemit,forthepurposeoftransferringmembershipfromoneValleytoanotherwithin

    the Southern Jurisdiction. The Certificate is a document unique to the Southern Jurisdiction

    and istobeusedonlybetweenValleyswithinourJurisdiction. It isvalidonlyuntiltheendof

    aBrother

    affiliatingValleymustcertifysuchelectionbycompletingthebottomstuboftheCertificateof

    IfaBrother,whohasdemitted fromaValley, laterwishestoreactivatehismembershipwith

    Perpetual(Life)MembershipasprescribedbytheSupremeCouncil

    ny member in good standing and whose dues are paid to date may purchase a

    perpetual (life) membership and thereby be relieved from the further payment of

    dues,subjecttotheprovisionssetforthbythebylaws. Membersaged74oryounger

    Members

    who

    have

    attained

    the

    age of 75 or older may purchase a perpetual membership for $200.00. The total fee for a

    perpetual (life) membership shall be collected by the Valley and the Valley Secretary shall

    immediatelydepositallmoniessoreceivedintheperpetualmembershipfund.

    The fund shall be invested and reinvested from time to time, under the supervision of the

    SovereignGrandInspectorGeneral. Theinterestfromsuchfundsmaybedistributedannually

    totheValley. Innoeventshallthecorpusofthe fundeverberemoved,exceptasprovided

    below. TheSGIGorhisdesignateshallissuetothememberpayingtherequiredfeea

    perpetualmembershipcertificatesignedbyValleySecretaryandthe SGIG.

    IftheholderofaperpetualmembershiptransfersbyaCertificateofGoodStandingorDemit

    fromoneValleytoanotherinthesameOrient,hemaytransferhisperpetualmembershipwith

    him.However, ifhetransferstoaValley inanotherOrient,or inanotherJurisdiction,thefee

    paidforhisperpetualmembershipshallremainintheperpetualmembershipfundoftheValley

    fromwhichitwaspurchased.

    Aperpetualmemberwho, foranyreason,hasceasedtobeamemberofhisSymbolicLodge

    withaconsequentlossofmembershipinhisScottishRiteBodies,shall,uponbeingrestoredto

    membershipinhisScottishRiteBodies,isrestoredasaperpetualMemberinthoseBodies.

    Valleysare

    prohibited

    from

    donating

    or

    selling

    perpetual

    memberships

    in

    any

    manner

    other

    thanherebyspecifiedexceptthataValleymay,byvote,purchase from its fundsaperpetual

    membershipforamemberthereof,payingtheappropriatefeedesignatedabove.

    When two or more Valleys consolidate, all money in the perpetual membership fund to the

    creditofsuchValleysshallbetransferredtothecreditoftheperpetualmembershipfundofthe

    remaining Valley. Upon the dissolution or demise of any Valley, holders of perpetual

    membershipcertificatesaffiliatingwithanotherValleyshallhavethefundstransferredtothat

    Valley.

    Theholder

    of

    aperpetual

    membership

    certificate

    shall

    be

    subject

    to

    all

    the

    laws

    and

    regulations

    as provided in the Statutes of the Supreme Council, and loss of membership by suspension,

    expulsion, death, or loss of membership in his Blue Lodge shall automatically abrogate his

    perpetualmembershipandanyclaimbysuchmember,familyorsurvivortoanyportionofany

    feespaidforsuchlifemembership.TheValleyofwhichhewaslastamembershallcontinueto

    receivetheincomefromthefund.

    Anyone may purchase a perpetual membership in honor of or in memory of a member of a

    ScottishRiteValley.v

    DualandPluralMembership

    ValleymayreceiveandactuponanapplicationforPluralMembershipfromaBrother

    whoholds membership in anOrient in theSouthern Jurisdiction. AValleymayalso

    receiveandactuponanapplication fordualmembership fromaBrotherwhoholds

    membershipinaJurisdictionofanotherSupremeCouncilwhichpermitsit. Anapplicantmust

    verifythatheisamemberingoodstandingbyshowinghiscurrentduescard. ACertificateof

    Good Standing should NOT be used for Dual Membership purposes, as it will result in the

    Brother'sdemissioninhisprimaryValley.

    AfterelectingsuchaBrothertomembership,theSecretarywillreporttheDualMembertothe

    Supreme Council. Plural membership (two Valleys within the same Orient) will also be

    reported.

    If the Brother is from the Philippines, his Dual Membership should be reported on the

    ApplicationforDualMembershipforMembersfromthePhilippines. Itisabsolutelynecessary

    thatDualandPluralMembershipsbereportedontheproper forms.Thesemembersarenot

    regular affiliations and should not be reported as such. Regular affiliation involves demission

    fromthemember'sformerValley.

    Dual membership, with retention of any Supreme Council honors which may have been

    investedorconferredbythisoranyotherSupremeCouncil,ispermittedonareciprocalbasis

    withother

    jurisdictions

    with

    which

    we

    are

    in

    amity

    (Statutes

    of

    the

    Supreme

    Council,

    Article

    XVII,Sec.33.4).

    WhenaBrotherholdsaDualMembershipbetweentheNorthernandSouthernJurisdictions,he

    maychoosewhichValleyhewishestobehisprimaryValleyforthepurposeofallowinghimto

    beeligibleforelectiveofficeandforfurtherhonors.Thischoicemustreceivetheapprovalof

    the Active (Northern Jurisdiction) and the SGIG/Deputy (Southern Jurisdiction) of the

    twoOrientsinvolved. Ineachcase,theSovereignGrandCommandersshouldbenotifiedofthe

    change.vi

    Waiver

    of

    Jurisdiction

    AttimestheBodiesarefacedwitharequesttoperformritualwork formembersfromother

    Valleys,Orients,orJurisdictions. Forinstance,amanwhowillbeamemberofanotherOrient

    but is livingorstationedawayfromhomefora longperiodoftimeashappensregularlywith

    ourmembersofthearmedservices. InthiscaseaWaiverofJurisdiction isnotrequired. Itis

    simply a courtesy. A Waiver of Jurisdiction is required (Statutes, Article XVII, Regulations

    Affecting Candidates and Members) when the individual is a resident within the territorial

    jurisdiction outside of the Southern Jurisdiction of the United States. For instance, a Mason

    from

    England

    seeks

    to

    receive

    the

    degrees

    of

    the

    Scottish

    Rite

    while

    residing

    in

    the

    United

    States. Onlyafterthewrittenconsentandwaiverofjurisdictionshallhavebeenobtainedfrom

    theSovereignGrandCommanderorproperofficialofsuch foreignSupremeCouncil, can the

    work be accomplished. When a waiver ofjurisdiction is requested between the Supreme

    CouncilsoftheNorthernandSouthernJurisdictionsoftheScottishRite,foranAmericancitizen,

    thenthewaivermaybeobtainedfromtheSovereignGrandInspectorGeneralorDeputyofthe

    SupremeCouncilinthestateorterritoryinwhichtheBrotherresidesorisaffiliated.

    These special procedures are important to remember as Grand Lodges around the World

    recognizecertain customs, traditionsanddegrees. Forexample theGrand LodgeofEngland

    considerstheMasterMasonmuchhigherthanthatconsideredintheUnitedStates. Without

    getting intoadiscussionabouthow thisworks,youmaywant to research the differencesor

    contacttheSupremeCouncilastheyhaveexpertsonthehistoryofFreemasonryavailableto

    submitted

    electronically

    topreservethesecrecyandtraditionoftheprocess. Therefore,theSupremeCouncilhasset

    forththattheSovereignGrand InspectorGeneralorDeputyforeachOrientshalldesignatea

    Brother or Brothers who are authorized to be "First Line Signers" of electronically submitted

    petitions. It isrecommendedthattheapprovedsigners includethePersonalRepresentative,

    ValleySecretary,MasterofKadoshorotherpersonintimatelyassociatedwiththeMembership

    Developmentprogram.

    OncethispersonhasbeenselectedbytheSovereignGrand InspectorGeneralorDeputy,the

    TheGoodandtheBad Whilewehavepresentedseveralareasfordiscussiononmembershipsofar,wehavenottackledthedelicatesituationofremovingmenfromourmembership. This

    shouldnotbedone lightly. Losingourmembershipshouldbea courtof lastresort. Didwe

    not take a pledge to support one another? Before we take serious action, we need to

    understand the processes by which a member loses his right to call himself a Scottish Rite

    Brother.

    SuspensioninBlueLodge

    AsduessupporttheactivitiesofthelocalValleysodotheduespaidtoyourlocalBlueLodge. It

    hasbeenapracticeoftheScottishRitetourgeourmemberstosupporttheirBlueLodge. Ifyou

    lose your membership in your Blue Lodge for any cause, you will automatically lose your

    membership in the Scottish Rite Bodies. The Valley Secretary has a procedure to follow

    accordingtotheStatues(refertotheScottishRiteStatuesforadditionalinformation). Shoulda

    memberbecomedelinquentinhisduesattheBlueLodge,theValleySecretarywillbenotified

    bytheLodgeSecretary.

    Suspension

    AsmuchasValleyshatetotakesuchactions,fromtimetotimemembersmustbesuspended

    fornonpaymentofdues(NPD). NPDsarereportedtotheSupremeCouncilonreportsnolater

    thanJanuary

    15th

    of

    each

    year.

    Otherwise

    these

    changes

    may

    not

    be

    included

    on

    the

    Valley's

    annual report of membership activity in the prior year, and, consequently, the Valley will be

    assessedPerCapitaonmemberswhoweresuspended.

    The Supreme Council will process suspensions in the members' records as NPD unless the

    reportofsuspensionindicatesOC(othercauses).Ifasuspendedmemberbecomeseligiblefor

    reinstatement,hewillbereinstatedonthemasterfilewithhisformerIDnumber.ix

    Reinstatement

    Reinstatement

    is

    the

    procedure

    used

    to

    restore

    to

    good

    standing

    a

    Brother

    who

    was

    suspended.Uponproperapproval,membershipintheScottishRite(heretoforerelinquishedby

    reason of nonpayment of dues either from the Blue Lodge or the Scottish Rite) may be

    reinstateduponpaymentofduesforthecurrentyear,plusoneyearPerCapitaTaxfortheyear

    he was suspended. If a suspended member is reinstated, the Valley will report his

    reinstatementtotheSupremeCouncilontheSentinelsystemusinghisformerIDnumber.x

    Since 1972, a provision of the Statutes of the SupremeCouncil, allows the Sovereign Grand

    InspectorsGeneralandDeputiesoftheSupremeCouncil, intheirdiscretion,toreducebynot

    more thanonehalf the fees for young men who petition for, are elected, and indue course

    completethe

    Degrees

    prior

    to

    their

    thirty

    first

    birthday.

    In these cases the Subordinate Bodies shall be required to pay the Supreme Council only

    Thesearetheunsungheroesofthegainsandlossesweexperience. Thesementrytoprovide

    an environment where each member feels that he makes a difference to the success of the

    ScottishRite.

    goals and objectives which improve what the Valley is able to do for the membership. In a

    Servant/Leaderrole,thesecommitteesservetheValleyinaccomplishingthefollowing:

    Recruitment: The recruiting of new members to the Valley. TheScottish Rite in the

    pasthasdoneanexcellentjobofrecruitingindividualstojoinourranks. Today,thisis

    gettingmoredifficult. Wehaveponderedwhythisisandperhapsthebestexplanation

    issimplytimeshavechanged. Societiesinthepastneededorganizationssuchasthe

    Scottish Rite to provide a networking opportunity for professionals, craftsmen,

    journeymen

    and

    better

    yet

    all

    men,

    to

    meet

    and

    exchange

    ideas

    with

    regard

    to

    philosophy, community development, business development and more. However,

    todaywe have community based organizations (Lions, Kiwanis, Rotary, etc.) which fill

    thebusinessandphilanthropicneedsofmanybusinessprofessionals. Thatisnottosay

    what they do is not good for the community, only to say there is competition for a

    mansvaluabletime. Anotherfactor,whetherrealorperceived,istheShrine,YorkRite,

    EasternStar,kidsactivities(baseball,football,ballet,cheerleading,etc.)whichpullthe21

    time away from those we want tojoin our ranks. Recruitment seeks to engage the

    individual and show him how Scottish Rite will help him become the man he most

    desires to be and therefore, encourage his membership. Recruitment actively works

    withLodges to identifypotentialcandidates,workwith theLodgeSecretariesonhow

    ScottishRitecanhelptheLodgeandworkwiththeindividualtoshowhimthebenefitof

    ScottishRite

    membership.

    Retention: Whilerecruitingofmembersisimportant,keepingtheoneswehaveisalso

    akeystoneforourorganization. Toooftenwe losegoodmenbecausetheygetlost in

    theshuffle. IcanrememberawhilebackasanewScottishRitememberinthearea. I

    wasntoneoftheValleymembers. But,thisValleyreachedoutandwelcomedmeasa

    brother. Later, IbecameaduespayingmemberofthisValleywhen Ifeltathome.

    ThatisthejoboftheRetentionGroup. TofindoutwhatintereststheBrother,keephim

    asamemberortofindoutwhyamemberisdroppingout. Thiscommitteeischarged

    with finding out why Brothers are no longer paying their dues. Sometimes it is a

    financialburdenonthememberandhechoosestoeitherputfoodonthetableandpay

    for

    needed

    medication

    or

    pay

    his

    dues.

    When

    we

    find

    this

    out,

    we

    can

    help

    him.

    But,

    if

    wedonttrywelosehim. Thereareamyriadofreasons. Thekeyisdiscoveringthe

    reason,showingtheBrotherjusthowimportantheistoourorganizationandshowing

    himwearededicatedtohimtheman,theMason,thefriend.

    Involvement: Wehavemembers todaywhoaremembersasduespayersonly. I for

    one,amnotactiveintheValleyIfirstjoined. Itisalittlehardtobeactive1500miles

    away. But, other Brothers live down the street. They are not active for a variety of

    reasons. Notoncommittees,nointerestinthedinners,cantgetoutatnight,etc. You

    name it. The InvolvementCommittee isheretofindoutwhatthemember's interests

    areandfillthemasmuchaspossible. TheValleyofPensacolaintroducedaFellowship

    Luncheonwhichhasbeenverysuccessful. Those whocannot get out atnightenjoy

    seeingold

    friends,

    hearing

    an

    interesting

    speaker

    and

    breaking

    bread

    with

    others

    of

    a

    likemind.Forsome, thiswillbetheironlyactive involvement. Thereareavarietyof

    thingstokeepamanengagedintheScottishRite. Butremember,weneedtobalance

    ourenthusiasmfortheFraternitywithjob,family,communityandrest. Thatisthejob

    of the involvement team. To see where we can involve our members; from working

    withintheValley,tocreatingeventssuchasvisitstothelocalballparktowatchagame.

    Not everything needs to be work. An eventwhere themember can enjoy fellowship

    withhisfamilyandBrethrenisalsoimportant.

    Mentoring

    T he Mentors Program has been established for the purpose of providing a means to

    communicateregularlywiththosememberswhohaveindicatedtheirinterestinbeing

    assistedintheirquestformoreinvolvementintheactivitiesoftheValley. Theneedto

    communicate isavitalactivity inallorganizationsand,moreespecially intheactivitiesofthe

    Valley. It is expected that with diligent communications, more successes may be realized in

    acquaintingournewMastersof theRoyalSecretwith thegoalsof theValley. Theexpected

    resultswillinclude:

    Anincreaseinthenumberofmemberswhoareactivelyengagedinourdegrees,public

    relationsprograms,educationprograms,charitableworkselectedbytheValley,stated

    andspecialmeetings,ourScottishRiteClubs,andFreemasonryingeneral.

    Providingour

    opportunities

    to

    identify

    outstanding

    members

    and

    groomthemforfutureleadershippositions.

    The reactivation of our seasoned leaders is vital to expanding the effect of their

    knowledgeandsuccessesthroughouttheyearsandalsotorecruitfreshtalenttocarry

    ourgrowthintofuturegenerations.

    The Mentors Program is implemented through a committee of learned brethren who are

    interestedinprovidingMasonicleadershiptonewMastersoftheRoyalSecret. Thecommittee

    isstructuredtoincludeaChairman,MentorTeamLeaders,andBrotherMentors.

    TheMentorsProgramintheValleyconsistsofanetworkoflearnedScottishRiteMasonswho

    are dedicated to fostering an environment whereby new Masters of the Royal Secret will

    continuetheirquestforMoreLightaftertheReunion.AsrecentlyConsecratedMastersofthe

    RoyalSecretbecome involved in the Mentors Program, theywill become thevoice that can

    relate to their peer generation in terms that will heighten the fraternal experience of our

    ScottishRitemembership.

    TheObjectives,Scope,andFocusoftheMentorsProgramintheValleywillfurtheradaptaswe

    learnfromourfraternalexperiencesandsuccesses. Noendeavoriseverperfect. However,we

    canstriveforperfectionbyworkingasateamduringthelifelongexperiencesofMentoring,and

    beingmentored.

    ItismostimportantthatthisprogramsucceedinassistingournewMastersoftheRoyalSecret

    inbecomingtrulycommittedandinvolvedmembersintheValley. RecentReunionsreflectan

    increased interested injoining the Scottish Rite. It is our responsibility to ensure that new

    MastersoftheRoyalSecretarenotignored. Wemustbeproactivewithnewmemberssothat

    theybecomewellconnectedwiththepurposesandtraditionsoftheScottishRiteandthatthey

    regularlyattendValleyfunctions.

    losing,itlooksforanewheadcoach.

    Therelationship

    between

    leadership

    and

    effectiveness

    is

    evident

    in

    sports.

    For

    example,

    ifyou

    lookatprofessionalsportsorganizations,thetalentontheteamisrarelytheissue. Justabout

    everyteamhashighlytalentedplayers. The leadershipprovidedbythecoachand/orseveral

    key players make the difference. To change the effectiveness of the team, change the

    leadership (coach). Whereveryou look,youcan findsmart, talented,successfulpeoplewho

    areabletogoonlysofarbecauseofthelimitationsoftheirleadership.

    People have many misconceptions about leadership. When they hear that someone has an

    impressivetitleoranassignedleadershipposition,theyassumethatheisaleader. Sometimes

    that'strue,buttitlesdon'thavemuchvaluewhenitcomestoleading. Trueleadershipcannot

    beawarded,

    appointed,

    or

    assigned.

    It

    comes

    only

    from

    influence,

    and

    that

    can't

    be

    mandated.

    Itmustbeearned. Theonlythingatitlecanbuyisalittletime,eithertoincreaseyourlevelof

    influencewithothersor toerase it. Thepersonwith themost influence is the leaderof the

    organization,nomatterwhattheirpositionortitleis.

    At the2008 ScottishRiteLeadershipConferences wediscussed the five levels of leadership.

    Theyare:

    1) Position/Rightslevel(EntryLevel) Peoplefollowyoubecausetheyhaveto.

    3) Production/Resultslevel(HighMorale) Peoplefollowyoubecauseofwhatyouhave

    People

    feel

    growth

    within

    organization.

    4) PeopleDevelopment/Reproductionlevel(Loyalty) Peoplefollowyoubecauseofwhat

    you have done for them. This is the most important level that a majority of

    organizationslack. Whenyoustartdevelopingpeople;theyareyoursforlife.

    5) Personhood/Respect level Peoplefollowyoubecauseofwhoyouareandwhatyou

    represent.

    There are plenty of misconceptions and myths that people embrace about leaders and

    leadership.

    The ability to lead is a collection of skills, all of which can be learned and improved. This

    processdoesnothappenovernight. Leadership iscomplicated. Leadershiphasmany facets:

    respect,experience,emotionalstrength,peopleskills,discipline,vision,momentum,andtiming

    arejustafewofthesefacets. Manyfactorsthatcome intoplay in leadershipare intangible.

    That'swhyleadersrequiresomuchseasoningtobeeffective.

    A persons capacity to develop and improve these skills is what distinguishes leaders from

    followers. Successful leaders are learners. The learning process is ongoing, a result of self

    disciplineandperseverance. Thegoaleachdaymustbetogeta littlebetter,tobuildonthe

    previousday'sprogress.

    JohnMaxwellwrote in21 IrrefutableLawsofLeadership thatLeadership isdevelopeddaily,

    notinaday. Whatapersondoesonadisciplined,consistentbasisgetshimready,nomatter

    whatthegoal.

    The lessons of life are much like the lessons that we continually learn about leadership. In

    ordertobealeader,youmustcontinuallygrowandeducateyourself. Thegrowthinlifeandin

    leadershipbeginswithyouandnooneelse.

    Everypastsuccessandfailurecanbeasourceofinformationandwisdom. Successesteachyou

    about

    yourself

    and

    what

    you're

    capable

    of

    doing

    with

    your

    particular

    gifts

    and

    talents.

    Failures

    showwhatkindsofwrongassumptionsyou'vemadeandwhereyourmethodsareflawed. If

    leadingyourpeople. Eachtimeyoumakeagoodleadershipdecision,youputchange inyour

    Eachtime

    poorleadership

    decision,

    to

    remove

    some

    of

    your

    change.

    Trust isthe foundationof leadership. Tobuildtrust,a leadermustexemplifythesequalities:

    competence,connectionandcharacter. Peoplewillforgiveoccasionalmistakesiftheycansee

    thatyou'restillgrowingasaleader. Theywon'ttrustsomeonewhohasslips incharacter. In

    thatarea,evenoccasionallapsesarelethal. Alleffectiveleadersknowthisisthetruth.

    Peopledontfollowothersbyaccident. Theyfollowindividualswhoseleadershiptheyrespect.

    Whenpeoplerespectyouasaperson,theyadmireyou. Whenpeoplerespectyouasafriend,

    theyloveyou. Whenpeoplerespectyouasaleader,theyfollowyou.

    Whenpeoplegettogetherforthefirsttimeasagroup,takealookatwhathappens. Asthey

    startinteracting,theleadersinthegroupimmediatelytakecharge. Theythinkintermsofthe

    directiontheydesiretogoandwhomtheywanttotakewiththem. Atfirst,peoplemaymake

    tentativemovesinseveraldifferentdirections,butafterthepeoplegettoknowoneanother,it

    doesn'ttakelongforthemtorecognizethestrongestleadersandtofollowthem.

    HowaLeaderGainsRespect

    1) RespectforOthers Ifaleaderwantsrespect,hemustgiverespect.

    3) FaithfulnessorConsistency Peoplefollowaleaderwhoisfaithfultothem. Theleader

    6) Courage Aleadermusthavethecouragetomakedifficultdecisionsandchanges.

    LeaderstouchaHeartbeforetheyaskforahand. Effectiveleadersknowthatyoufirsthaveto

    touchpeople'sheartsbeforeyouaskthemforahand. Allgreatcommunicatorsrecognizethis

    truthandactonitalmostinstinctively. Youcan'tmovepeopletoactionunlessyoufirstmove

    them

    with

    emotion.

    The

    heart

    comes

    before

    the

    head.

    Some leaders have problems because they believe that connecting is the responsibility of

    followers. Thatisespeciallytrueofpositionalleaders. Theyoftenthink,I'mtheboss.Ihavethe

    position, These are my employees. Let them come to me. Successful leaders are always

    initiators. Theytakethefirststepwithothersandthenmaketheefforttocontinuebuilding

    relationships. That'snotalwayseasy,but it's importanttothesuccessoftheorganization. A

    leaderhastodoit,nomatterhowmanyobstaclestheremightbe.

    People'scapacitytoachieveisdeterminedbytheirleader'swillingnessandabilitytoempower.

    Only empowered people can reach their potential. When a leader can't or won't empower

    others,he

    creates

    barriers

    within

    the

    organization

    that

    people

    cannot

    overcome.

    If

    the

    barriers

    remainlongenough,thepeoplegiveup,ortheymovetoanotherorganizationwheretheycan

    maximizetheirpotential.

    Whydosomeleadersnotempowertheirteam?Considersomecommonreasons:

    1. DesireforJobSecurity. Thenumberoneenemyofempowermentisthedesireforjob

    security. A weak leader worries that if he helps subordinates, he will become

    dispensable. In otherwords, if you areable to continually empower others and help

    themdevelopsothattheybecomecapableoftakingoveryourjob,youwillbecomeso

    valuable to the organization that you become indispensable. That's the paradox we

    face.

    2. Resistance to Change. By its very nature, empowerment brings constant change

    becauseitencouragespeopletogrowandinnovate. Changeisthepriceofprogress.

    3. LackofSelfWorth. Manypeoplegaintheirpersonalvalueandesteemfromtheirwork

    orposition. Threatentochangeeitherofthem,andyouthreatentheirselfworth.

    Mypersonalchallengetoyou istotaketimeoutofyourbusydaytostopandappreciatethe

    beautyofyour lifeatthisverymoment. Appreciatethe lifeofthosearoundyou. Noneofus

    cancontrolwhatourfuturebrings;wejustinfluencethecircumstances. Wecan;however,live

    ourlifeforeachpresentmoment.

    Doyourpeoplebuyintoyou? Manypeoplewhoapproachtheareaofvisioninleadershiphave

    itallbackward. Theybelievethat ifthecause isgoodenough,peoplewillautomaticallybuy

    intoitandfollow. That'snothowleadershipreallyworks. Peopledon'tfollowworthycauses.

    Theyfollowworthyleaderswhopromoteworthwhilecauses. Peoplebuyintotheleaderfirst,

    then the leader's vision. Having an understanding of that changes your whole approach to

    leadingpeople.

    Youcannotseparatetheleaderfromthecausehepromotes. Itcannotbedone,nomatterhow

    hardyoutry. It'snotaneither/orproposition. Thetwoalwaysgotogether. Takealookatthe

    It's easy to understand the reaction of people when they don't like the leader or the vision.

    Theydontfollow. Theyalsodosomethingelse:Theystartlookingforanotherleader. It'sano

    winsituation.

    When followers don't like the leader but they do like the vision, they still look for another

    leader!

    Youmaybesurprisedbythis. Eventhoughpeoplemaythinkacauseisgood,iftheydon'tlike

    the leader, theywillgooutand findanother leader. That'sone reason thatcoacheschange

    teamssoofteninprofessionalsports. Thevisionforanyteamalwaysstaysthesame:Everyone

    wantstowinachampionship,buttheplayersdontalwaysbelieveintheirleader. Whenthey

    don't,whathappens? Theownersdon'tfirealloftheplayers. Theyfiretheleaderandbringin

    someonetheyhopetheplayerswillfollow.

    Whenfollowersliketheleaderbutnotthevision,theychangethevision!

    When followers don't agree with their leader's vision, they react in many ways. Sometimes

    Whenfollowersliketheleaderandthevision,theywillgetbehindboth! Theywillfollowtheir

    leader no matter how bad conditions get or how much the odds are stacked against them.

    That's why the Indian people in Gandhi's day refused to fight back as soldiers mowed them

    down. That'swhatinspiredtheU.S.spaceprogramtofulfillJohnF.Kennedy'svisionandputa

    manonthemoon.

    Havingagreatvisionandaworthycausearenotenoughtogetpeopletofollowyou. Firstyou

    have

    to

    become

    a

    better

    leader;

    you

    must

    get

    your

    people

    to

    buy

    into

    you.

    That

    is

    the

    price

    youpayifyouwantyourvisiontohaveachanceofbecomingareality.

    Leadersnevergrowtoapointwheretheynolongerneedtoprioritize. It'ssomethingthatgood

    leaderskeepdoing,whetherthey'releadingasmallgroup,runningasmallbusiness,orleading

    abilliondollarcorporation.

    Ifyou focusyourattentionontheactivitiesthatrank inthetop20% intermsof importance,

    you will have an 80% return on your efforts. For example, if you have ten employees, you

    shouldgive80%ofyourtimeandattentiontoyourbest2people. Ifyouhave100customers,

    Tobeeffective,leadersmustordertheirlivesaccordingtothese3questions:

    1. What is required? We're all accountable to somebody; an employer, a board of

    directors,ourstockholders,orsomeoneelse. Forthatreason,yourlistofprioritiesmust

    alwaysbeginwithwhat isrequiredofyou. Anythingrequiredthat'snotnecessaryfor

    youtodopersonallyshouldbedelegatedoreliminated.

    2. What gives the greatest return? As a leader, you should spend most of your time

    working in your areas of greatest strength. If something can be done 80% as well by

    someoneelseinyourorganization,delegateit. Ifaresponsibilitycouldpotentiallymeet

    thatstandard,thendevelopapersontohandleit.

    3. Whatbringsthegreatestreward? TimRedmondadmitted,"Therearemanythingsthat

    willcatchmyeye,butthereareonlyafewthingsthatwillcatchmyheart." Thethings

    thatbringthegreatestpersonalrewardarethefire lighters ina leader's life. Nothing

    energizesapersonthewaypassiondoes.

    Examinethelifeofanygreatleader,andyouwillseehimputtingprioritiesintoaction. When

    LeeIacoccatookoverChrysler,thefirstthinghedidwastoreorderitspriorities.

    Greatleadersrecognizethatwhentoleadisasimportantaswhattodoandwheretogo. Every

    timealeadermakesamove,therearereallyonlyfouroutcomesthatcanresult:

    1. A

    leader

    who

    takes

    the

    wrong

    action

    at

    the

    wrong

    time

    is

    sure

    to

    suffer

    negative

    repercussions.

    2. Therightactionatthewrongtimebringsresistance. It'sonethingtofigureoutwhat

    needstobedone;it'sanothertounderstandwhentomakeamove.

    3. Thewrongactionattherighttimeisamistake.

    4. When leaders to do the right things at the right time, success is almost inevitable.

    People,principles, andprocesses converge tomakean incredible impact. The results

    touchnotonlytheleaderbutalsothefollowersandthewholeorganization.

    Leaders who develop followers grow their organization one person at a time. Leaders who

    developleadersmultiplytheirgrowth,becauseforeveryleadertheydevelop,theyalsoreceive

    allofthatleader'sfollowers. Addtenfollowerstoyourorganization,andyouhavethepower

    of tenpeople. Addten leaderstoyourorganization,andyouhavethepowerof ten leaders

    timesallthefollowersandleaderstheyinfluence. That'sthedifferencebetweenadditionand

    multiplication.

    1. Becoming a leader who develops leaders requires an entirely different focus and

    attitudefromthoseofaleaderwhodevelopsfollowers.

    potential

    hard

    attract.

    They'realsohardertoholdontoonceyoufindthembecauseunlikefollowers,theyare

    energeticandentrepreneurial,andtheytendtowanttogotheirownway. Developing

    leaders is also hard work. Leadership development isn't an addwaterandstir

    proposition. Ittakestime,energyandresources.

    3. Value team leadership above individual leadership. No matter how good he is, no

    leadercandoitallalone. Justasinsports,acoachneedsateamofgoodplayerstowin;

    anorganizationneedsateamofgoodleaderstosucceed. Thelargertheorganization,

    thestronger,larger,anddeepertheteamofleadersneedstobe.

    4. Walkawaywithintegrity. Whenit'saleader'stimetoleavetheorganization,hehasgot

    to

    be

    willing

    to

    walk

    away

    and

    let

    his

    successor

    do

    his

    own

    thing.

    Meddling

    only

    hurts

    himandtheorganization.
