Inspiring StudentsDr. Paul Farmer, internationally noted physician, author and activist, spoke at USF Health about his mission to bring free health care topeople affected by poverty and diseases throughout the world. Asco-founder of Partners in Health, he highlighted their HIV/AIDS work inHaiti and Rwanda, and the efforts to provide free medical and socialsupport to impoverished people with the disease. USF Public Healthstudent Jane Mai commented, “Discovering how one man’s persistenceand compassion [has] impacted millions of lives reminded me that it isall possible, and that fighting for human rights is not an option butrather our moral responsibility.” Partners in Health (PIH) began as asmall clinic in the middle of a squatter settlement in Haiti. Today, PIHworks in eight other Haitian sites and in five other countries treatingpeople with such diseases as tuberculosis and HIV. It has also workedwith communities here and abroad and with Congress to promote healthas a human right, helping to build a movement to fight for health andsocial justice. This special USF Health presentation was in collaborationwith the University Lecture Series (ULS), with strong support fromthe Global Health Students Association and the International HealthService Collaborative, along with assistance from the Departments ofAnthropology and of Global Health, COPH, the Division of InfectiousDisease & International Medicine, the Patel Center for Global Solutionsand the Patel Foundation for Global Understanding.
