Dear Brothers and Sisters, January 6th is the Epiphany of the Lord. The Wise men come bearing gifts of gold, frankincense and myrrh. They stoop down and kneel before the King of Kings to give him homage. We Catholics know a lot about “spiritual exercises” (standing, sitting, kneeling, etc.). The way we pray affects what we believe. Lex orandi, lex credendi, lex vivendi. As we worship, so we believe so we live. A couple of weeks ago on December 15th the bishop of our neighboring diocese (Bishop Strickland of Tyler, TX) sent out a tweet helping his flock prepare for Christmas. This is his tweet: “Ways to receive Our Lord as King of the Universe…read and reflect on the Sunday Scriptures, plan your whole weekend around receiving your King, wear your best garments, spend time in quiet, kneel to receive Him, receive Him on the tongue, offer silent time of thanks after mass.” Notice Bishop Strickland is encouraging a certain way of prayer that affects belief and consequently our lives. He is encouraging a return to tradition.

From the Pastor’s Office Continued… Pope Benedict encouraged the same thing over a decade ago. We must remember Pope Benedict was a well-seasoned priest, a theologian, when he attended the Second Vatican Council. He lived through the turmoil of changes that were not prescribed by the council but were done in the “spirit” of the council, such as the tearing down of altar rails. He is one of the very few living prelates to be ordained before the council, be present at it and experience the changes that were wrought following it. He knows how things were, what transpired and what was lost. As Pope, whenever he would celebrate Mass, anyone who would receive our Lord in Holy Communion would kneel (at a kneeler) and receive Jesus’ Body, Blood, Soul and Divinity on the tongue. The Pope was sending an explicit signal to the world on what needs to be restored. No one paid attention, especially bishops. Bishop Strickland is one of the few in the U.S. who takes heed and encourages a way of prayer that reinforces our belief and profoundly changes our life. Hiliare Belloc, a famous Catholic writer of the early-mid 1900’s, was “kneeling at Mass in Westminster Cathedral. A sacristan whispered to him, ‘Excuse me sir, we stand here.’ Belloc: “Go to Hell” Sacristan: “I’m sorry, sir, I didn’t know you were a Catholic.” (Sheed, F. (1974). What is Pro Life? Are we sure we are 100% Pro Life? – Part I
The Church teaches that all life is sacred and must be cherished and protected from conception to natural
death. By keeping this guiding principle in mind in reviewing all the following moral issues of today, we can
quickly see what it means to be 100% Pro Life, no exceptions.
Abortion
This is defined as the removal of an embryo before it can survive outside the uterus. While it may not look or
function completely as a baby, it is still a baby. All things are what they are at their inception. By not protecting
and nurturing an embryo, we have taken the life of a little boy or girl.
Now we have to ask the difficult questions for some. While many people are against abortion in general, and still
calling themselves prolife, they take exception in the following cases: rape, incest, or severe mental or physical
birth defects in the unborn child. Those exceptions to abortion are not prolife, because they are not protecting all
life. We cannot take the life of any unborn child, regardless of their condition or the circumstances of their
conception. The child is innocent, created by God in his image, and deserving of God’s plans for his life here on
earth.
If you believe that Abortion is wrong, then you are Pro Life on this issue.
Joann Murray Lucas, Texas
