Deacon Jeff’s Corner

“Come to me all who labor and are burdened, and I will give you rest.” (Matthew 11:28). I don’t think it matters if you are a young person who might read this; maybe you are 7 or 8 years old, or if you 97 or 98 years old; we all find that life comes with many struggles, right? If we are young, our struggles are likely different from when we are old but nevertheless, they are still struggles. If you are young, you might be saying, “I sure wish I was older and then things would be easier!” But if we are old, we find ourselves saying, “If I were only young again, things would be easier!”

The fact is that life itself is a struggle. Jesus knows that by taking the form of a human; he’s lived through all the obstacles life has. He also knows, however, if we can only trust in Him our struggles will be less or at least seem that way. The real question comes down to a matter of trust. How much can we trust God in our daily lives? Do we ask for help every day? I would say if we can really trust and give our burdens to God, even the worst of days won’t seem so bad. Better yet, the good days will be really good – even better than they are now!

In these challenging times, we have someone we can give all our problems to – Jesus! Recognize him as the one you can depend on and trust that he will take care of you, because he will!

My Yoke Versus Jesus’ Yoke By Amy Ertman

This week’s Gospel reading from Matthew ends with Jesus saying, “My yoke is easy, and my burden light.” Easy. Light. Does that sound like your life before or during COVID-19? Do you anticipate a life of ease and lightness when everything gets back to “normal”?

As a working mom in our fifteenth year of marriage with three teen-ish-agers, ease and lightness aren’t adjectives I use often. Happy! Joyful! Challenging! Frustrating! Overwhelming! Blessed! That’s more like it. While it is amazing God has entrusted me to assist in getting my husband and children to heaven, it isn’t easy. Not because of who they are, but because of who I am.

Did you notice it’s about what “I use” and “who I am”? As we celebrate the independence of our country this weekend, it dawned on me that my challenges come from my independence in trying to follow my will instead of God’s will. MY yoke and burden feel very heavy at times. If I let go of MY independence, and depend on God, follow God’s will—can I lighten my load? You bet! In God We Trust! When? ALWAYS.

Recently, my family watched the movie “God’s Not Dead Two.” In the movie, a high school teacher is being persecuted for quoting the Gospel in her public classroom. At the height of the movie, she is in prayer asking God why she can’t feel His Presence during this most difficult time. Her wise grandfather overhears and response, “The Teacher is always quiet during a test.”

Struggling today? Remember Jesus said, “My yoke is easy. My burden is light.”
