BENTON TOWNSHIP, Mich. — The popular PBS KIDS television

show, Sid the Science Kid, is coming to the live stage. Jim Henson’s “Sid the Science Kid LIVE: Let’s Play!” will be at the Lake Michigan College Mendel Center Mainstage on Saturday, Nov. 8, 2014, for two big shows at 11 a.m. and 2 p.m.

“Sid the Science Kid” comes to life in this incred-ible live stage experience. Kids and parents alike will be thrilled as Sid, May, Gabriela, and Gerald come to town to discover the excitement and curiosities of the world around them.

With wonders to discov-er, Sid and his friends set off on a day of excitement and adventure, as they explore their five senses through fun games and experiments and by asking curious questions and find-ing fascinating answers. Teacher Susie is also along to keep the music flowing as the kids explore the world around them with audience interactive activi-ties, cooperative problem solving and plenty of laughs to go around. There is even a surprise sixth sense revealed by Teacher Susie. “Sid The Science Kid Live!” will have the whole family cheering, exploring, dancing and excited to figure out more about the great unknown together.

“Sid The Science Kid LIVE: Let’s Play!” is created for the stage by the imaginative minds of Michael Lewis, the veteran Broadway performer and producer of ImaginOcean; John Tartaglia, the creator and writer of ImaginOcean and Tony Award-nominated actor; and The

Jim Henson Company.The “Sid the Science

Kid” television series is an educational animated show produced by The Jim Henson Company for PBS KIDS. It uses comedy and music to promote explora-tion, discovery and science readiness among pre-schoolers. This landmark production of 66 half-hour episodes debuted on Sept. 1, 2008, and has since been honored with five EMMY nominations and multiple awards including the most recent CINE Golden Eagle Award.

NEW TROY, Mich. — Community members are invited

to get the holiday season off to a warm and wonderful start at New Troy’s Chili & Movie night, which will feature a chili cookoff and the world premiere of a doc-umentary featuring New Troy.

New Troy: The Center of the World, was directed by the award-winning Australian filmmaker, Justin Olmstead, who shot it while visiting the town in 2012. It features interviews with numerous former and current residents, including the late Norma Diehl, Al Boyd, Brandy Glick, Terry Hanover, Mike Metz, Pam Olmstead, and Ron Schaffer, plus a multitude of photos of the town in its heydey.

New Troy: The Center of the World will be premiered at the New Troy Community Center on Thursday, November 20, with the chili cook-off starting at 6:00 p.m. and the movie at 7 p.m. Following the movie, Justin and members of the New Troy Historical Committee will be on hand to take part in an informal discussion.

Filmmaker Olmstead is the son of Pam Olmstead (nee Siebler), who was born and raised in New Troy and whose parents ran the former Trojan Grill in the center of town. Another of his documenta-ries, A Dying Art: Maple Syrup Making in Galien, received Best Director and Best Script in the 2012 Canberra International

Short Film Festival. “It’s where my mum

grew up,” Olmstead said, “and when I think of what a gathering place the Trojan Grill was, I get a sense of nostalgia for something I can never experience. But hearing people talk fondly of the Grill made me feel more connected to the town, and more proud of my grandma for what she cre-ated.”

As for why he created the film, he said, “I wanted to tell New Troy’s story, to have the town recorded and represented in a way that would last and be enjoyed by future generations. My intention was also a little selfish — I wanted an excuse to get to know the townsfolk and feel more connected to my mum’s past.”

This event is a prime opportunity for those with an interest in local history. DVDs of the documentary, which would make great

Christmas presents, will be available at $15 each.

Advance purchase of tickets is recommended as seating is limited. Tickets are $5 each, and include both chili sampling and the movie. Beverages and des-serts will be available for purchase.

Anyone interested in entering the chili cookoff is encouraged to pre-register through Friends of New Troy’s Facebook page or by contacting Lorraine Hanover.

He has appeared in numerous films,

including “Necessary Roughness,” “First Kid,” “Jingle All the Way” and “Houseguest.”

Ranked by Comedy Central as one of the 100 greatest stand-up comics of all time, his comedy projects have included several specials for HBO, hosting It’s Showtime at the Apollo, and a Comedy Central TV special.

Trying out a new rootI truly love radishes. And

breakfast hash. These are two things I brought

together thanks to an unusual looking radish I spotted at the farmers mar-ket a couple weeks ago.

I was visiting one of my regular farmers when I noticed something unfa-miliar next to the beets. It had a black-purplish skin that was very rough and a little hairy. I thought it was a variety of beet, but the vendor told me they were

black radish. I’d never seen them before so I couldn’t resist buying them.

I knew by the rough skin that, unlike most rad-ishes, these would need to be peeled. I’m notably lazy when it comes to peeling, so it was a little dishearten-ing, but anything in the name of kitchen experi-ments, right?

My original plan was to toss them in a salad with some lovely local lettuce. I did zero research, or I

would have known from the start that these black radishes are too bitter for most to eat raw.

Much like yucca, tur-nips, yams and other fibrous, hearty roots, these are ideally boiled a bit before whipping into a mash or stirring into a hash as I did. I think black rad-ishes would also be great fried up in a savory pan-cake or baked into a casse-role. The black radishes hold up well and have an

excellent nutty, spicy fla-vor once cooked. I have also read they are good shaved raw in salads, but for me the taste and texture were too strong to eat raw. Of course shaving them rather than quartering them would tone them down quite a bit. In fact, you could shave both the radish and potato in this recipe for another yummy hash style.

I came up with the idea to put them in a hash on the fly. I had a bunch of pota-

toes and peppers that need-ed to be cooked right away, so I figured why not fry them up in a skillet and make a breakfast hash. It was really cold here in Chicago the last few days, so a rib-sticking potato and seasonal veg bowl sounded fantastic. Both the weather and the local produce in season lend this time of year to making hash perfection.

While I had this for brunch, it works great as a side dish for a big feast, or as your lunch main. I served it with a spicy mayo sauce,

but I think tahini dressing would be better. The tahini reci-pe is available in my article

archive, or on katshotcakes.com. If you don’t have

black radishes, then use parsnips or tur-nips instead and it

will be equally deli-cious.

Root Vegetable and Pepper HashYield: 4 servings

¾ cup yellow onion, diced4 cups yukon gold potatoes, cubed into ½ inch pieces2 cups black radish, peeled and cubed5 cloves garlic1 fresh jalapeno, chopped1 green bell pepper1 Hungarian pepper or other seasonal sweet pepper3 cups kale, pulled from the stem and torn into 1 inch pieces½ tablespoon grapeseed or vegetable oil¼ cup fresh cilantro, chopped1 cup cooked lentils¾ teaspoon sea salt½ teaspoon cumin¼ teaspoon paprika¼ teaspoon cayenne red pepper (optional)Fresh black pepperJuice of ¼ lemon

Bring water to boil in a small stockpot. Add radishes (or parsnips), reduce to a gentle boil, and cook 5-7 minutes until chew-able but still firm. Drain off water and allow to cool a bit before using.

Heat vegetable oil in a large skillet. Add the onion and cook until onion starts to become translucent, about 5 minutes. Add the potatoes and cook until they start to before tender. Stir in the peppers and garlic. Cook for about 5 minutes on medium high, using water to deglaze pan if need be. You really do want the pota-toes to have a toasted look and texture, but I find adding a splash of water now and then helps keep oil down.

Add spices and lemon juice shortly after the peppers. Stir in kale and cook for about 3 minutes. I find it’s best if you stir in ½ at a time. Kale is big when it’s raw, but will wilt a bit once it comes in contact with the heat. Next, add the cilantro and lentils. Stir and cook for just a couple more minutes so everything is warm and just slightly wilted but still a bright green color.

Serve topped with gravy or drizzled with tahini dressing. I like to pair with fruit, like local grapes, and some breakfast breads.

Call for artistsBuchanan Art Center seeking submissions

The Buchanan Art Center is requesting artwork for their All

Members’ Art Show which opens Wednesday, Nov. 19 and runs through Saturday, Jan. 3, 2015.

The public invited to the artists’ reception for this show to be from 2 to 4 p.m. Sunday, Nov. 23.

Featuring the artistic talents of current BAC members, members of all ages are welcomed to sub-mit artwork. There is a limit of two pieces per member, and all work must be the original work of the artist. All styles and media, both 2D and 3D, are

encouraged and accepted. Flat work in all age catego-ries should be ready to hang; matted, mounted or framed. Registration and drop off dates for entries are Sunday, Nov. 16, between 1 and 4 p.m. and Monday, Nov. 17, between 10 a.m. to 5 p.m.

SOUTH BEND, Ind. — The Indigo Vapor Lounge offers South Bend a fresh take on one of

the city’s landmark buildings – and some fresh flavors for adults to enjoy in their sunny, spacious and arts-friendly corner at Monroe and Michigan streets, the former Witmer-McNease music site. Now they’re ready for the big grand opening, begin-ning with a Nov. 7 open house and refreshments during Downtown South Bend First Fridays!

Indigo CEO Tony Reed and his wife, Cheryl, have carefully preserved some of the best features at the site, including the original ceiling. SOUTH BEND, Ind. — Drewrys Ltd USA announced recently

that the firm will be open-ing a local market for the holiday season at their newly acquired future brewing facility, in the for-mer Inwoods building in downtown South Bend.

The holiday market will celebrate the return of Drewrys to South Bend with branded gifts that include lager glasses, T-shirts, and selections including the popular “Drewrys: A Look Back At All the Fun” book.

The Drewrys Holiday Market invites local arti-sans or merchants to join us from Nov. 7 through December 23 at the build-ing, at 425 S. Michigan St. For a small fee, entrepre-neurs may set up a retail-table shop in space avail-able from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. Monday-Saturday. That includes all the weekends of downtown events and shopping, ahead of Dec. 25.

Although the 35,000 square foot, three-story site will become home to Drewrys brewing facilities, tasting room and a muse-um in spring 2015, the building cleanup and reno-vation has begun and will be under way throughout

winter. The Drewrys site will use part of the public-facing, street-level space for vendors to sell items and gain exposure in the local marketplace, all in a festive market that reflects the Drewrys commitment

to local business.

“There’s still a lot of work to be done before the brewing facility is operational and before the tasting room is open to the public,” said Dan Blacharski, Drewrys Vice President of Marketing. “But we have some unused and newly renovated space that we want to put to good use as a Drewrys merchandise shop, and we invite the com-munity to come join us.”

Drewrys was revived last year by regional inves-tors from Chicago and South Bend, decades after the doors closed at the South Bend facility in 1972. The company was a major employer in South Bend and the 10th largest brewer in the United States,

and many city residents still own Drewrys collectibles and memorabilia — in at least one case, a few dozen unopened bottles of the 1960s-era bock beer recent-ly turned up! The holiday market will not sell any beer — just vintage posters, books and other stocking

stuffers – but our nearby retail out-lets will be carry-

ing beer as the brand continues its triumphant return to town.

“Visitors to the new location will find exclusive Drewrys gifts in

time for the holidays, with beer on the shelves

of area stores and in your favorite restaurants and taverns,” Blacharski said. Drewrys Holiday Market plans to participate in downtown seasonal events, such as DTSB First Fridays promotions and the annual Small Business Saturday shop-local efforts.

Kruck will present the history of downtown Benton Harbor and St. Joseph, highlighting various busi-nesses, hotels, houses, and people that have played a part in the de-velopment of each city’s historic downtown dis-tricts. The program will be based in part on the popular walking tours of-fered by the Museum this summer with added im-ages featuring the busi-ness districts.

Tim Dudley is returning to The State on Novem-ber 8, 2014. This show will feature the Hit’s of Elvis Presley, Gospel, Christmas and more of Elvis music. Tickets are $10 per adult and it’s free for Children 12 & Under. Doors will open 6 p.m. Visitors can come early and have a snack, pop water and more.Then Tim’s show will start at 7 to 10 p.m. Tim plans on doing three sets with three different suit chang-es, covering almost every era for this show
