ARCHBISHOP’S APPEAL
Thank you to all who have made a gift to
the 2018 Archbishop’s Appeal. Your gift will
directly support the Appeal ministries that aid and
evangelize the people in the Archdiocese of San Anto-
nio. For those who’ve not yet had an opportunity to
participate in this year’s Appeal, there is still time. A gift
to the 2018 Archbishop’s Appea; can be made until De-
cember 31. Please consider renewing your gift or mak-
ing a gift for the first time. Your gift donation is essen-
tial to ensuring that we may continue the Catholic Ap-
peal ministries that serve the people in our archdiocese.
To learn more about the impact of your gift visit
www.archsa.org/archbishops-appeal or call the office of
Archbishop’s Appeal at (210) 734-1604. Thank you for
your generosity and God bless you!
Volunteer Positions Open
Many hands make light work more fun!
Volunteer Coordinator: We need an organized leader to help
parishioners get joyfully involved in the Little Flower community.
You would lead, oversee, and coordinate our volunteer efforts
and improve processes for parish organizations and events. You
would support volunteer leaders and help improve communica-
tions and recruitment to engage parishioners as volunteers.
Assistant Volunteer Coordinator: This person will assist and support the Volunteer Coordinator.
Spanish translators: Are you a native speaker with excellent written Spanish? As we work to improve our
communications, we frequently need translations.
Special Events Committee Members: Opportunities continue to increase for the Basilica to host special
events and concerts. We can raise funds, enhance the Basilica’s public profile, support local arts and cul-
ture, and serve the community through these events. This committee will help establish event policies,
develop efficient processes, evaluate opportunities, and coordinate with outside organizations.
If you are interested in being included on our committees, please email Anna Migeon
WHAT’S NEW
NEW PHONE SYSTEM
If you’ve ever had trouble reaching us at
the parish administration office, we
blame it on our decrepit old phone sys-
tem! Thank you to the 34 donors who
responded to our recent appeal with gifts
totaling almost $2,000 to help replace it.
These donations covered most of the
down payment on a new fiber optic sys-
tem to connect the parish office, the gift
shop, and monastery. The new system, to
be installed over the next few
weeks, will save us money
and improve our communi-
cations with you!
LITTLE FLOWER SCHOOL
Little Flower Catholic School is now enrolling
students PK3-8th grade for the new school year!

day is to publicly fulfill the Lord's instruction to, "Pray the Lord
of the harvest to send laborers into his harvest" (Mt 9:38; Lk

FEATURED ARTICLE
1) All people, including the laity, are called to holiness “To be holy
does not require being a bishop, a priest or a religious. We are fre-
quently tempted to think that holiness is only for those who can with-
draw from ordinary affairs to spend much time in prayer. That is not the
case. We are all called to be holy by living our lives with love and by
bearing witness in everything we do, wherever we find ourselves. “Are
you called to the consecrated life? Be holy by living out your commit-
ment with joy. Are you married? Be holy by loving and caring for your
husband or wife, as Christ does for the Church. Do you work for a liv-
ing? Be holy by labouring with integrity and skill in the service of your
brothers and sisters. Are you a parent or grandparent? Be holy by pa-
tiently teaching the little ones how to follow Jesus. Are you in a position
of authority? Be holy by working for the common good and renouncing
personal gain.” (GE 14)
2) Christ is the center of any Christian life “That mission has its fullest
meaning in Christ, and can only be understood through him. At its core,
holiness is experiencing, in union with Christ, the mysteries of his life. It
consists in uniting ourselves to the Lord’s death and resurrection in a
unique and personal way, constantly dying and rising anew with
him.” (GE 20)
3) Our prayerful life must support our life of active service “We
need a spirit of holiness capable of filling both our solitude and our
service, our personal life and our evangelizing efforts, so that every
moment can be an expression of self-sacrificing love in the Lord’s eyes.
In this way, every minute of our lives can be a step along the path to
growth in holiness.” (GE 31)
4) Holiness leads to joy “Do not be afraid of holiness. It will take away
none of your energy, vitality or joy. On the contrary, you will become
what the Father had in mind when he created you, and you will be faith-
ful to your deepest self. To depend on God sets us free from every form
of enslavement and leads us to recognize our great dignity.” (GE 32)
5) We can only become holy by the grace of Christ “The Church has
repeatedly taught that we are justified not by our own works or efforts,
but by the grace of the Lord, who always takes the initiative. The Fathers
of the Church, even before Saint Augustine, clearly expressed this fun-
damental belief. Saint John Chrysostom said that God pours into us the
very source of all his gifts even before we enter into battle.” (GE 52)
6) Don’t replace the Gospel with lesser important things Some
Christians insist on taking another path, that of justification by their own
efforts, the worship of the human will and their own abilities. The result
is a self-centered and elitist complacency, bereft of true love. This finds
expression in a variety of apparently unconnected ways of thinking and
acting: an obsession with the law, an absorption with social and political
advantages, a punctilious concern for the Church’s liturgy, doctrine and
prestige, a vanity about the ability to manage practical matters, and an
excessive concern with programs of self-help and personal fulfilment.
“Some Christians spend their time and energy on these things, rather
than letting themselves be led by the Spirit in the way of love, rather
than being passionate about communicating the beauty and the joy of
the Gospel and seeking out the lost among the immense crowds that
thirst for Christ.” (GE 57)
7) Don’t let entertainment distract us from empathizing with oth-
ers Blessed are those who mourn, for they will be comforted. The world
tells us exactly the opposite: entertainment, pleasure, diversion and
escape make for the good life. The worldly person ignores problems of
sickness or sorrow in the family or all around him; he averts his gaze.
The world has no desire to mourn; it would rather disregard painful
situations, cover them up or hide them. “Much energy is expended on
fleeing from situations of suffering in the belief that reality can be con-
cealed. But the cross can never be absent. A person who sees things as
they truly are and sympathizes with pain and sorrow is capable of
touching life’s depths and finding authentic happiness.” (GE 75-76)
8) The Church rejects abortion for the same reason she cares for the
poor “Our defense of the innocent unborn, for example, needs to be
clear, firm and passionate, for at stake is the dignity of a human life,
which is always sacred and demands love for each person, regardless of
his or her stage of development. Equally sacred, however, are the lives
of the poor, those already born, the destitute, the abandoned and the
underprivileged, the vulnerable infirm and elderly exposed to covert
euthanasia, the victims of human trafficking, new forms of slavery, and
every form of rejection. “We cannot uphold an ideal of holiness that
would ignore injustice in a world where some revel, spend with aban-
don and live only for the latest consumer goods, even as others look on
from afar, living their entire lives in abject poverty.” (GE, 101)
9) The devil is real and we should be on guard “We should not think
of the devil as a myth, a representation, a symbol, a figure of speech or
an idea.[121] This mistake would lead us to let down our guard, to grow
careless and end up more vulnerable. The devil does not need to pos-
sess us. He poisons us with the venom of hatred, desolation, envy and
vice.
“When we let down our guard, he takes advantage of it to destroy our
lives, our families and our communities. ‘Like a roaring lion, he prowls
around, looking for someone to devour’ (1 Pet 5:8).” (GE 161)
10) Mary is the greatest of the saints “I would like these reflections to
be crowned by Mary, because she lived the Beatitudes of Jesus as none
other. She is that woman who rejoiced in the presence of God, who
treasured everything in her heart, and who let herself be pierced by the
sword. Mary is the saint among the saints, blessed above all others. “She
teaches us the way of holiness and she walks ever at our side. She does
not let us remain fallen and at times she takes us into her arms without
judging us. Our converse with her consoles, frees and sanctifies us. Mary
our Mother does not need a flood of words. She does not need us to
tell her what is happening in our lives. All we need do is whisper, time
and time again: ‘Hail Mary…'” (GE 176)
