M adrid, the capital of Spain, is a cos-mopolitan city that combines mod-ern structures and the condition of

the economic, financial, administrative and service center with an immense legacy of ar-tistic and cultural heritage with centuries of history.

Strategically located in the geographic cent-er of the Iberian Peninsula, at 646 meters of altitude above sea level, Madrid preserve one of the most important historic centers of the major European cities, that blends harmoni-ously with the most moderns infrastructures, a complete offer of accommodation and ser-vices, and the most advanced technology in audiovisual aids and communication. Condi-tions that, by the push of a dynamic and open minded society, but also cheerful and wel-coming, have turned this metropolis in one of the biggest capitals in occidental world.

Populated from the Upper Paleolithic, will not be until 1561 when the Spanish king Fe-lipe II named Madrid the capital of his ex-tended territory. The old town, also known as “Madrid de los Austrias” and the spectac-ular Major Square, inaugurated in 1620, be-came nowadays in one of the most popular places from Spain, is the best example of the magnificence of the city during XVI and XVII centuries.

Next to the Major Square, you can find the “Aristocratic Center” where the Royal Palace is the center of attention, monumental con-struction of the XVII century, mixture of Ba-

roque and Classical. Next to the palace, the “Plaza de Oriente”, the Opera theatre and the modern Almudena Cathedral, consecrated in 1993 by the Pope Juan Pablo II. La Puerta del Sol, surrounded by a selected shopping area, and “El Paseo del Arte”, named this way because of all the incredible museums, pal-aces and gardens, completed by the beau-tiful fountains of Cibeles and Neptuno, in honor to the classic gods, and the Bank of Spain and the Palace where the town hall has been transferred.

Art and Culture are prominent on the agen-da of Madrid. The capital has 73 muse-ums covering all the human knowledge. The most important and well known in the whole world are, Prado Museum, one of the most important galleries of the world, Mu-seum Thyssen-Bornemisza, with more than 800 pictures, sculptures, tapestry ranging from the early Flemish masters to the most avant-garde movements. And the National Center of Art Reina Sofia, dedicated to the Spanish contemporary art, with pieces from Pablo Picasso, Joan Miró, Salvador Dalí o Juan Gris inter alia.Extensive landscape parks and gardens, like the Parque El Retiro, a historic place where the Spanish kings used to retire and promenade,

La Casa de Campo where you will find the Zoo and the amusement park, or the Rey Juan Car-los Park, let you enjoy the sun, row their ponds, have a picnic, or even feeding the squirrels in one of the greenest capitals of Europe.

The importance of his international airport, where more than a thousand planes arrive from the whole world weekly, their two pal-aces of Congress, the modern fairground “Campo de las Naciones” where every year ARCO, one of the three most important con-temporary art fairs take place, and other places with more than 80.000 places in other meeting centers turn Madrid into one of the most attractive business centers of Europe.

But if something characterized Madrid is a deep and contagious passion for life that is re-flected in the friendliness of people. Concerts, expositions, ballets, a select theatre billboard, latest cinematographic releases, taste a big se-lection of the best Spanish and international gastronomy; relish the charm of its bars and taverns, those are some leisure alternatives, plus a tempting offer commercial and shop-ping in traditional stores or establishment of the first firms and international brands.

The night life of Madrid is well known and has become one of the most important attractions of the city because of his variety and good at-mosphere in his bars, pubs, nightclubs or fla-menco bars, that could be alternated during the day with the most traditional parties, pop-ular festivals, or the bullfight fair of San Isidro, considered the most important of the world.
