Reservoir Characterization We are providing Reservoir Characterization services include Sediment logical, Petrographical and Reservoir Modelling studies and Petrophysical evaluations. Our latest development in the Reservoir Characterisation group is the start-up of a borehole image interpretation (BHI) team. BHI integrated with core descriptions, focusing either on depositional features or structural features (fracture description), greatly aids in getting the full picture of reservoirs.

Sedimentology & Petrography Our sedimentology services include core description, interpretation of lithofacies and

depositional model, sequence stratigraphic analysis and paleogeographic reconstruction. Our expertise ranges from Deep Water and Deltaic clastics to Carbonates, Evaporites and Shallow Marine deposits. Continental facies where we have extensive experience include Eolian, Fluviatile and Lacustrine environments.Thin-section description, point counting and a range of specialised petrologic methods (SEM, CL, Fluid Inclusions) are also performed.

Reservoir Quality Interpretation & Prediction Advanced diagenetic studies should be considered when detailed

quantitative understanding is needed. A range of advanced methods available including Cathodoluminescence & Fluorescence Petrography , Fluid Inclusions, SEM-BSE, X-Ray Diffraction and Bulk Chemistry. These methods are often used in combination with one another, as appropriate for the specific questions of interest.

Stratigraphic Correlation Depending on the nature of the reservoir, the specialized methods of Strontium

Isotope Stratigraphy and Chemostratigraphy may be appropriate for correlation studies.Provenance Studies can also is useful for correlation, as well as for other aspects of reservoir geology.

Fracture Studies: Measurement of fracture orientations, fracture types and the relative timing of distinct fracture sets

can be performed on core by goniometry and digital core scanning. Fractures can be characterized outside of the cored intervals by borehole imaging. Interpretations can be delivered about how the fractures influence connectivity, production rates and recovery factor.

Core Description Using CoreCAD PanTerra has extensive experience logging both siliciclastic & carbonate cores

from diverse geological settings, including the North Sea, North Africa, China, South America, Russia, Kazakhstan, the Middle East, India and the Far East. Core description is done digitally using CoreCAD. Core descriptions are supported by integrated presentation in CoreCAD format with other available data, such as wireline logs, routine core analyses, petrographic and geochemical information and borehole image logs.

Petrographic Description and Modal Analysis Thin sections can be described quantitatively by point counting

as well as qualitatively in terms of dominant rock fabric, microfacies, mineralogy, pore types, biotic components or diagenetic overprints. Grain size and sorting can be measured from thin sections either exactly by point counting or approximately by comparator method. An interpretation of the paragenetic sequence can be supplied, as well as photomicrographs and comprehensive petrographic descriptions.

Cathodoluminescence (CL) & Fluorescence Cathodoluminescence microscopy is useful for recognizing distinct

cement generations that may otherwise appear indistinguishable. Cathodoluminescence can also reveal differences within detrital grain populations that may be useful for tracing sediment provenance Fluorescence microscopy can also reveal growth zoning in mineral cements, but is especially useful for detecting hydrocarbon-filled fluid inclusions, where the colour and intensity of fluorescence can be used to estimate the API gravity of trapped oil.

Fluid Inclusions:Fluid Inclusion microthermometry measurements can provide quantitative numerical estimates of the

temperatures at which mineral cements were precipitated during diagenesis. For hydrocarbon-filled inclusions, properties such as API gravity and GOR can be estimated in addition to trapping temperature. At Panterra we conduct fluid inclusion petrography based on the Fluid Inclusion Assemblage (FIA) approach. A Fluid Inclusion Assemblage is a group of petrographically associated fluid inclusions that formed at about the same time or during the same set of diagenetic conditions. Primary inclusions (trapped during cement growth) are thus carefully distinguished from secondary inclusions (trapped along fractures formed after cement growth).

Bulk Chemistry Chemical analysis of mechanically homogenized bulk-rock samples is a highly cost-effective way of

obtaining highly quantitative data for a wide range of chemical variables, including alumina, U, Th, K, and TOC These data are useful for comparing different lithofacies and geographic locations, can be used for stratigraphic correlation (Chemostratigraphy). In-house capabilities for bulk chemical analysis consists of X-ray fluorescence (XRF) spectrometry, inductively coupled plasma atomic emission spectrometry (ICP-AES) and several wet-chemical methods.

Stable Isotopes Most stable isotope geochemistry is performed on the light elements Oxygen, Carbon, Hydrogen, and

Sulphur. Analyses can be performed on whole-rock samples,

Scanning Electron Microscopy (SEM) Scanning electron microscopy (SEM) is useful for studying the pore

geometry and mineral morphology of reservoir rocks and is a powerful tool for supporting the petrographic study of thin sections. SEM imaging is especially relevant for examining clay minerals. Our in-house JEOL JSM.6400 SEM is equipped with Energy Dispersive Analysis of X-Rays (EDAX) for analysing and mapping the elemental composition of minerals. Backscatter-electron imaging is available in combination with image analysis software that allows quantitative evaluation of pore geometry in polished thin sections.

X-Ray Diffraction (XRD) X-ray diffraction (XRD) analysis is used to measure mineral abundances in rocks and materials

such as salts and scale samples. XRD analysis is typically carried out on both bulk-rock and clay-fraction samples.

Fracture Measurements by Goniometer & Digital Cor Fracture orientations can be measured on cores both

by goniometer and by digital core scanning. The fractures are categorized according to

Type of displacement (extensional, compressional, strike-slip)

Morphology (planar, non-planar)

Magnitude of apparent displacement (none, mm, cm, dm)

Fracture fill (sediment and/or mineral cement, open or (partially) cemented)

Nature of fracture boundaries (diffuse or sharp) These categorized, oriented fractures as picked on the core are then imported into the software package WellCAD for display and further evaluation.

Borehole Imaging We integrate borehole image logs with sedimentological core descriptions and core analysis data to

characterise reservoir geometry, diagenesis and fracture patterns. We can work with all major formats of borehole image logs
