New Delhi: India is set toachieve its millennium de-velopment goal (MDG) forunder-five mortality by nextyear. In what comes as a sig-nificant indicator of im-provement in child health-care, India recorded a four-point decline in under-fivemortality rate from 49 deathsper 1000 births in 2013 to 45 in2014. India’s MDG goal is 42.
In 2014, India averted 1.26lakh more deaths amongchildren under-five years ofage, according to data whichare part of the sample regis-tration survey for 2014, re-cently released by the Regis-trar General of India.
The survey indicates8.16% decline in under-fivemortality during 2013-14, as against 5.76% during2012-13.
“We have initiated vari-ous interventions and ex-panded the coverage of im-munisation. We are confi-dent that by next year, we willachieve the millennium de-velopment goal target bybringing down the under-fivemortality rate to 42,” health
minister JP Nadda told TOI.While inequity in cover-
age of healthcare serviceshas been a major concern inIndia, the latest data reflectsthe differential betweenrural and urban India for un-der-five mortality has alsonarrowed to 23 points,as compared to 26 pointsin 2013. In 2012, India’s under-five mortality ratestood at 52.
The development as-sumes significance as Indiahas the highest burden ofchild deaths in the world. In-dia alone accounts for 22% of6.3 million annualunder-five deaths globally.Around 52% of under
-five deaths happen at the neonatal stage.
Nadda said the dedicatedefforts during the neonatalperiod through establish-ment of special new-borncare units, systematic homevisits by ASHA workers, im-proved breastfeeding prac-tices and increase in institu-tional deliveries have led toIndia’s progress.
According to the WorldHealth Organisation, 36% ofall neonatal deaths in Indiaare on account of complica-tions associated with prema-ture births; 23% were due toasphyxia at birth; and anoth-er 23% due to a range of new-born infections, including
neonatal sepsis.While almost all states
showed remarkable improve-ment in reducing deathsamong under-five year-olds,Kerala was the only statewhere mortality rate in-creased by one point from12 in 2013 to 13 in 2014. But still Kerala fared far better as compared to the national average.
States like Uttar Pradesh,Rajasthan, Assam and Od-isha where the under-fivemortality rate was muchhigher in 2013 have all record-ed a decline of over fivepoints during 2014. Otherstates like West Bengal, Del-hi, Chhattisgarh, Haryana,Himachal Pradesh and J&Khave also shown progresswith a decline of more thanfour points in under-five mor-tality rate.

New Delhi: Despite maternalmortality rate coming downto half worldwide since 1990,India accounts for 15% of suchcasualties during pregnancyand childbirth with 45,000 ma-ternal deaths in 2015, accord-ing to a new global report byLancet which points out inter-national as well as nationaldisparities in maternalhealthcare services.
Despite making significantprogress in reducing its mater-nal mortality by 69% since 1990,India along with Nigeria ac-counted for one-third of theglobal maternal deaths in 2015,the report says while attribut-ing it to a yawning gap in mater-nal healthcare between urbanand rural areas.
The report also highlightsglobal inequalities by point-ing at varying maternal mor-tality across countries. Itshows that the gap betweenthe group of countries withthe lowest and highest rates ofmaternal mortality has dou-bled between 1990 and 2013.
Globally, the annual num-ber of maternal deaths per100,000 live births dropped by44% between 1990 and 2015,from 385 to 216. The sub-Saha-ran African region accountedfor an estimated 66% (201,000)
of global maternal deaths, fol-lowed by southern Asia at22% (66,000 deaths). In fact, on-ly 5% of the world’s countriesaccounted for 59% of the totalmaternal deaths globally.
“However, alongside theincreasing gaps between dif-ferent countries, the poten-tial for growing inequitieswithin countries also exists, spatially in terms of ruraland urban areas or remotedistricts, and between pop-ulation subgroups,” the re-port further says.
The report – a series ofsix papers published in theLancet – analysed differentaspects and issues of mater-nal health globally. Despiteimprovement in coverage ofinstitutional deliveries and
skilled birth attendants, Indiahas twice missed its millenni-um development goals to re-duce maternal mortality rateby three quarters. Currently,India’s maternal mortalityrate stands at 174 and to achie-veits next target, it needs to re-duce it to 103.
Experts say that coverage oflife saving interventions and in-equity are two of the biggesthindrances in India for improv-ing maternal healthcare.
The health ministry has in-troduced as well as expandedcoverage of various schemesto address these challenges, with its main focus on remoteareas . It has also started somenew schemes to provide care tothe pregnant women at differ-ent stages of pregnancy.
India still accounts for 15%of maternal deaths globally

New Delhi: The government’sdecision to implement the he-alth warning to cover at least 85per cent of the principal dis-play area on packs of all tobac-co products seems to have gonewell with manufacturers ofsuch products, if findings of alatest study conducted by Vo-luntary Health Association ofIndia are to be believed.
The nationwide studyshows over 60% packs of ciga-rettes and 46% of smokeless to-bacco are complying with theCentre’s mandated 85% pictori-al warning requirements. InDelhi, 54% of the cigarettepacks and 55% of smokeless to-bacco packs were fully compli-ant with all the labelling requi-rements mandated under thelaw, the findings show.
This comes in the wake oftobacco companies earlier clai-ming the new warnings are not“feasible”. “Even though sometobacco companies are oppo-sing the new health warnings ,the study results show 85 per-cent pictorial warnings is prac-tical and tobacco companiesare abiding by the law,” saidchief executive of VoluntaryHealth Association of IndiaBhavna Mukhopadhyay.
