Learn about the Diocesan Plan to Strengthen and Sustain Our Catholic Ministry: On the afternoon of Feb. 1, the Diocese of Winona has released Vision 2016. This draft plan aims to ensure a sustaina-ble future for our parishes, parishioners and priests, as well as the vitality of our Catholic community across our 280-mile wide diocese. Nearly half of our parishes can expect organizational change as a result of the draft cluster plan, and all of our parishes will develop a two-year to three-year Parish Pas-toral Plan to create a more sustainable path locally and across the diocese. We encourage parishioners to learn more about the proposed plan, as well as the review process, in the February issue of The Courier, being mailed to all registered households and available on the diocesan website starting on the afternoon of Feb.1. The website will also feature a detailed summary of recommended parish alignments, relevant data, and the Vi-sion 2016 Parish Pastoral Plan Guidebook, online at www.dow.org The following is a continuation of a written document of the USCCB regarding the Mass and Communion 2006 2. What is the significance of being united to Christ in Holy Communion? The Catechism of the Catholic Church teaches that “the principal fruit of receiving the Eucharist in Holy Communion is an intimate union with Christ Je-sus”.” (CCC, no. 1391. This union encompasses at least three significant elements. A. Participating in the One Sacrifice of Christ. Jesus, our Great High Priest, lovingly offered His own life on the cross as a holy sacrifice to the Father for our sins. As the spotless “Lamb of God, who takes away the sin of the world” (Jn 1:29), Jesus established the everlasting covenant—“the new covenant in my blood” (Lk 22:20)—with the Father. In the Eucha-rist, this one sacrifice of Christ is again made fully present. By taking part in the liturgy of the Eucharist, we join our-selves to this one holy sacrifice of Christ. The celebration of the Eucharist culminates in the reception of Holy Commun-ion. As Pope John Paul II has stated: “The saving efficacy of the sacrifice is fully realized when the Lord’s body and blood are received in communion.” (John Paul II Ecclesia de Eucharistia) We are nourished in the Eucharistic banquet by the living bread, and we partake of the cup of our salvation. The Risen Lord Jesus comes to dwell personally within us, and so we share in his life and friendship. He gives himself completely and entirely to us, and we are called to give ourselves com-pletely and entirely to Him. We are also lifted up into His heavenly Kingdom, and, in union with Him, we are embraced by the Father in the love of the Holy Spirit as His redeemed sons and daughters. Receiving Jesus in Holy Communion, therefore, fortifies us against sin, which damages our relationship with God; heals us of our weaknesses; and empowers us to live holy lives of sacrificial love for one another. B. Communion with One Another. The reception of Holy Communion is an act of the Church as the Body of Christ. While we each personally receive Holy Communion, it is not a private devotion. Rather, the reception of Holy Communion is an integral part of our worship as a community of faith. Likewise, the term “communion” accentuates the fact that, in receiving Holy Communion, we are united to Jesus and thus to one another. As we become one body with Christ in receiving Holy Communion, so we are also united with one another. “Because the loaf of bread is one, we, though many, are one body, for we all partake of the one loaf” (1 Cor 10:17). As Pope Benedict XVI has explained: Un-ion with Christ is also union with all those to whom He gives Himself. I cannot possess Christ just for myself; I can be-long to Him only in union with all those who have become, or who will become, His own. Communion draws me out of myself towards Him, and thus also towards unity with all Christians. We become “one body,” completely joined in a single existence. Love of God and love of neighbor are now truly united: God incarnate draws us all to himself” (Pope

El Sacramento de la Unción de Enfermos confiere al cris-tiano una gracia especial para enfrentar las dificultades propias de una enfermedad grave o vejez. Se le conoce también como el "sagrado viático", porque es el recurso, el "refrigerio" que lleva el cristiano para poder sobrelle-var con fortaleza y en estado de gracia un momento de tránsito, especialmente el tránsito a la Casa del Padre a través de la muerte.

Lo esencial del sacramento consiste en ungir la frente y las manos del enfermo acompañada de una ora-

ción litúrgica rea-lizada por el sa-cerdote o el obis-pos, únicos mi-nistros que pue-den administrar este sacramento.

La Unción de enfermos se co-nocía antes como "Extrema Un-ción", pues sólo se administraba "in articulo mor-tis" (a punto de morir). Actual-mente el sacra-mento se puede administrar más de una vez, siem-pre que sea en caso de enferme-

dad grave.

¿Qué es la Unción de Enfermos? Es el sacramento que da la Iglesia para atraer la salud de alma, espíritu y cuerpo al cristiano en estado de enfermedad grave o vejez.

¿Cuántas veces puede recibir el sacramento un cristiano? Las veces que sea necesaria, siempre que sea en estado grave. Puede recibirlo incluso cuando el estado grave se produce como recaída de un estado anterior por el que ya había recibido el sacramento.

¿Qué efectos tiene la Unción de enfermos?

La unción une al enfermo a la Pasión de Cristo para su bien y el de toda la Iglesia; obtiene consuelo, paz y áni-mo; obtiene el perdón de los pecados (si el enfermo no ha podido obtenerlo por el sacramento de la reconciliación), restablece la salud corporal (si conviene a la salud espiri-tual) y prepara para el paso a la vida eterna.

MINISTERIO DE SANACIÓN Durante su ministerio, Jesús “curó a muchos enfer-mos de diversos males y expulsó a muchos demonios”. Así es el caso en el Evangelio de hoy. Jesús cumple la visión del Salmo 147: “Él sana los corazones destroza-dos y venda sus heridas.” Jesús sabía, sin embargo, que nunca podría sanar todas las enfermedades del mundo. Por mucha gente que curara o muchas horas que dedicara al ministerio, siem-pre habría más personas afligidas como Job, ansiosos de su toque sanador. Su misión principal no era la de erradi-car todo sufrimiento del mundo. Su “obligación” era predicar la venida del Reino de Dios que sana, sí, pero en último caso, trasciende y transforma todo sufrimiento humano.
