From Father Mike

When Jesus says in today’s gospel, “If anyone wishes to be first, he shall be the last

of all and the servant of all,” I would like to think that I am pretty good at serving

others and being a helpful person. And when James writes in his letter in today’s

second reading, “Where jealousy and selfish ambition exist, there is disorder and

every foul practice,” that this is referring to others a lot more than me. Then I read

in Pope Francis’ letter “The Joy of the Gospel,” bringing these two ideas together:

“To sustain a lifestyle which excludes others, or to sustain enthusiasm for that

selfish ideal, a globalization of indifference has developed. Almost without

being aware of it, we end up being incapable of feeling compassion at the

outcry of the poor, weeping for other people’s pain, and feeling a need to

help them, as though all this were someone else’s responsibility and not our

own. The culture of prosperity deadens us; we are thrilled if the market offers

us something new to purchase. In the meantime all those lives stunted for

lack of opportunity seem a mere spectacle; they fail to move us.”

I am probably not alone in finding the thrill of the new more exciting than the

exercising of compassion. Feeling the pain of people around me, especially those

in our greater local community, and taking some type of responsibility instead of

assuming that someone else is helping is definitely a challenge. Yet when I think of

the times when I have put the energy placed into serving rather than “selfish

ambition,” I also realize that it is much more fulfilling. Instead of being deadened

by prosperity, Jesus wants us to be alive by being “servant of all.”
