Spring is a time of renewal and the Community Services Depart-ment of the City of Beverly Hills would like to update you on some of the ways we’re renewing parks and programming. Beyond the updates I’d like to highlight, this brochure is packed with informa-tion including class schedules, recreational opportunities, special event information and more. I hope you take some time to review all that’s available for your consideration. We’re pleased that the beautiful new Children’s Library is up and running, along with a refreshed Library lobby and checkout sys-tem. If you haven’t visited yet, now’s the time.Parks make life better and here in Community Services we’ve been busy making our parks better. From a proposed dog park to the improvements in Hamel Mini-Park, the augmented courtside seat-ing at the Tennis Center and the new snack bar and the outdoor fitness equipment at La Cienega Park to the expanded Demonstra-tion Garden at Greystone, all of the City’s parks feature new or forthcoming enhancements. Of course, the major Roxbury Park Community Center and grounds improvement project continues to progress on-track and the extensive renovations of Beverly Gar-dens Park—the crown jewel of Beverly Hills green spaces—is nearing design completion. As usual, we have a packed schedule of special events, aquatics, one-day seminars, fitness classes, arts and technology offerings and children’s programming. This summer the Beverly Hills Uni-fied School District will be modifying its calendar and our camps will keep pace: be sure to check out the Summer Camp preview in this brochure and get a head start on planning your family’s sum-mer. The rest of these pages are brimming with activities for all ages and our staff encourages you to take advantage of one or a dozen this quarter. The days are getting longer and the weather’s getting warmer. Get out and explore your City this spring.

Sincerely,

Steve Zoet, DirectorCommunity Services Department

Human Services would like to introduce our public awareness campaign, Positive Change, Not Spare Change. This campaign is designed to provide meaningful help to homeless people in need and discourage direct giving to panhandlers who have made street begging their career. We ask the community to redirect your compassionate giving to agencies and non-profits that can make a real difference and change people’s lives.

Panhandling is not against the law. It is a right protected by the first amendment. As many as nine out of ten Beverly Hills panhandlers are not homeless. Giving to career panhandlers promotes more panhan-dling and enables vulnerable individuals to remain on the street instead of accepting help from the City’s homeless outreach team and other available services.

Volunteer Opportunities

The Community Services Department is offering a variety of ways to volunteer in the community. This is an opportunity to meet new people and become involved in one or more of our worthwhile projects or special activities. New volunteers are needed to assist with the senior nutrition program by distributing lunches, check-ing in seniors and collecting donations.

We are recruiting for the upcoming Greystone Mansion Concours d’Elegance (May 5) and the Beverly Hills artSHOW (May 18 & 19). These are great fun events for the whole family to get involved.

Volunteering is a great way to share your skills, learn new skills or help those in need. Call the City of Beverly Hills Volunteer Program at 310.285.6843 and we will help you find the right match whether it’s volunteering for a day, a week, or just for special events. You decide!

YOU CAN MAKE A DIFFERENCE!
