Life in Victoria
La Trobe University 11
About VictoriaHugging the tip of Australia's east coast, Victoria is Australia's second-smallest state, covering 227 600 square kilometres – roughly the size of the British Isles.
A wealth of diverse regions and attractions are packed into this compact area, with sweeping coastlines, pristine beaches and national parks and forests teeming with wildlife, plus wineries, lakes and mountains offering skiing, climbing and hiking. Best of all, many of Victoria's unique and varied landscapes are easily reached as day trips from Melbourne.
Seasons and climateDespite the small size, Victoria's climate varies across the state. The north has much drier and warmer weather than the south. Australia's seasons are the reverse of those in the northern hemisphere. The climate is warm to hot in summer (December to February), mild in autumn (March to May), crisp in winter (June to August), and cool in spring (September to November).
Melbourne Victoria’s capital, Melbourne, sits on the banks of the Yarra River and around the shores of Port Phillip Bay. Melbourne boasts a packed program of festivals and events, Australia’s best and most stylish shopping and a lively passion for eating and drinking. It also supports a flourishing arts scene.
Degraves StreetAnkur Rastogi (India) and Shakun Sharma (Nepal) take time out in Degraves Street, one of Melbourne’s most popular coffee hubs, just a short walk from La Trobe’s City Campus.
Great Ocean RoadTravel the Great Ocean Road and experience one of the world’s most scenic coastal drives. See the towering 12 Apostles, iconic surf breaks, misty waterfalls, native wildlife and seaside villages. A perfect weekend getaway!
Events Melbourne and Victoria host some of Australia’s most prestigious events throughout the year, including the Spring Racing Carnival culminating in the Melbourne Cup in November, the Australian Open Tennis in January, Melbourne Food and Wine Festival and the Formula 1™ Australian Grand Prix in March, Melbourne International Comedy Festival March to April, international jazz, film and writers’ festivals May through September, and Melbourne Festival in October. Victoria also hosts an ever-changing schedule of blockbuster exhibitions from around the world.
HeritageGrand 19th century architecture and elegant gardens, built following the discovery of gold, are a reminder of Victoria’s ‘Gold Rush’ past, while Aboriginal cultural landmarks and landscapes continue to connect Indigenous Australians from South Eastern Australia with a living cultural heritage dating back more than 60 000 years.

The university system explained
UndergraduateThis is the first level of study at university, and usually refers to a three or four-year Bachelor’s degree. This may also include Honours studies, which can take an additional year, plus there are double degrees which usually take at least four years full-time.
PostgraduateA university qualification undertaken after a Bachelor’s degree (e.g. Graduate Certificate, Graduate Diploma, Postgraduate Diploma, Master’s, Doctorate). Postgraduate qualifications can be completed by coursework or through research (see page 38).
Course structureOur course structure is based on two 13-week semesters each year. Semester 1 usually begins in February and runs until May, while Semester 2 usually begins in July and runs until October. To see the La Trobe Academic Calendar visit: latrobe.edu.au/calendar/ academic-calendar
Most subjects run for one semester, and full-time students usually enrol in four subjects each semester. In most courses, you complete a combination of compulsory (core) subjects, a major, and some electives. In some courses, you only have to complete compulsory (core) subjects.
Studying at university is a unique experience. Here are a few key terms you may come across if you are considering university in Australia.
Assessment and gradingYour assessment will vary depending on the subject you’re taking. It can include things like case studies, group assignments, class presentations and exams. At La Trobe, we use the following grading scheme:
80 – 100%
70 – 79%
60 – 69%
50 – 59%
Less than 50% is a fail
Contact hoursContact hours are the number of hours you’ll need to spend in lectures and tutorials. Depending on what you are studying, contact hours could be between 12 and 30 hours per week. You will also need to spend time on independent reading and research outside of class.
Lectures and tutorialsDuring lectures, your teachers will present information to your entire class. Tutorials and seminars are smaller group sessions that are sometimes led by your teacher, another academic, or another student. Tutorials and seminars are interactive, and are your chance to get more information about lecture material and assignments.
MajorThis is a sequence of subjects that allows you to specialise in an area that particularly interests you. You usually take six to eight major subjects over your whole degree – at least one each semester.
Work placementsWork placements give you industry experience relevant to your studies, and allow you to network with individuals in your chosen industry. During work placements, you usually work under an employer’s supervision. Not all courses offer placements, but for some they’re compulsory. They’re usually assessed as part of your studies.
Tuition feesWhen you study at La Trobe, you’ll need to pay tuition fees. Indicative 2017 annual fees for each of our courses are detailed on pages 52 to 63, and are calculated based on a standard full-time 120 credit point load. I wanted to learn as much about science and mathematics as I could, and a double degree was the way to do that. La Trobe lecturers and opportunities to visit facilities like the Australian Synchrotron and Melbourne Centre for Nanofabrication are excellent. The subject ‘Issues in Nanotechnology’ was very interesting with guest speakers invited from big companies.

The research supervision here is much better than any I have had elsewhere. My supervisor Dr Robert Horvath has been the most amazing support and mentor in this whole process. He is always listening carefully and providing guidance whenever I have encountered trouble.
I spent the whole of 2015 primarily in Kazakhstan and Tajikistan, on a La Trobe-supported fieldwork trip. I really enjoyed being in the field; that has been the best part of my candidature yet. What keeps me motivated is the belief that the knowledge I create now may one day be utilised to facilitate democratic development in the Republic of Kazakhstan.

(single room) or share a bedroom with others (dorm room). You also share common facilities such as the kitchen, laundry, bathroom and living areas. Rooming houses are a good option if you enjoy living in a communal environment.
Private rental vacanciesThis option includes units, flats, houses, self-contained bungalows and apartments. Living in a private rental gives you the opportunity to live independently and be responsible for all aspects of your tenancy. This can be one of the more expensive options as you are solely responsible for meeting costs such as the bond (security deposit), rent in advance, gas, electricity and water, moving expenses and furnishings.
Commercially operated student apartmentsIf you’re interested in living independently in a larger complex, with less pastoral support but with access to common facilities, this may be a good choice. Rooms come fully furnished and you have your own bathroom and kitchen facilities. There are different types of accommodation within apartments, including:
– studio room
– one bedroom
– two bedroom
– twin share (sharing your room with another person).
HomestayIn a homestay arrangement, you live as a guest with the host family in their home. Meals and other support may be provided and your room is usually fully furnished. This can be appealing as it gives you an opportunity to be supported in a family environment.

When I found out that I had received a scholarship from La Trobe University, I felt really happy because it meant I would be studying in Australia. Receiving a scholarship from La Trobe has helped me financially and made me feel that all of the effort I put into my previous studies and work had finally paid off. In that moment, I finally realised I was about to move to Australia and study my Master’s degree at one of the top universities in Australia.
