Dear Parishioners and Friends of St. Eulalia Parish, One of our beautiful Christmas carols begins with an important question: “What child is this?”. Later in the carol the question is answered: “This, this is Christ the King”. Behind the traditional Christmas Gospel and the music and traditions of this season, is the fact that God has become one of us in His Son, Christ Jesus. At Bethle-hem on that first Christmas night it was not just a prophet, a religious leader, or even an outstanding teacher that was born. It was God coming to earth for us and for our salvation. Sometimes our ideas about Christmas are too small. The one born and placed in the manger at Bethlehem is the Second Person of the Blessed Trinity, the eter-nal Word of God, existing with the Father and the Holy Spirit from all eternity. Reflect on what the Bible and the Creed state about the identity of the Child of Bethlehem. He is: “the image of the invisible God, the first-born of all creation. In Him everything in heaven and earth was created.” (Colossians 1:15,16) “Through Him all things came into being, and apart from Him nothing came to be.” (John 1:3) “He was in the world, and through Him the world was made, yet the world did not know who He was.” (John 1:10). He is: “God from God, Light from Light, true God from true God, begotten, not made, one in Being with the Father. Through Him all things were made.” (Nicene Creed) “He will come again in glory to judge the living and the dead, and His kingdom will have no end.” (Nicene Creed) These biblical and creedal statements present us with the truth about the One whose birth we remember. We are celebrating the human birth of a Divine Person who comes among us to show us the way to eternal life and to open that way for us by His life, His death on the cross, and His glorious resurrection from the dead. The One born into our world on Christmas is also truly present among us at eve-ry Mass especially as we receive His Body and Blood in Holy Communion. That is why the weekend Mass is meant to be the very “source and summit of our Catholic faith”. Christmas also teaches us that the most important relationship in our life is our relationship with Jesus Christ. May we receive Him by faith this Christmas and follow lovingly in His footsteps.

Let’s me conclude this brief message with the beautiful words of a Christmas Eucharistic prayer: “In Jesus Christ we see our God made visible and so are caught up in love of the God we cannot see.” May you and your loved ones experience God’s love in a special way during this holy and blessed season and may you respond to that love throughout the New Year.

Christmas Peace,

CHRISTMAS DAY DEVOTIONS FOR YOUR HOME

The Blessing of the Nativity Scene

Holy Child, on this festival of your birth we ask your blessing on all who look upon this scene.

In abandoning the riches of heaven, you exalt poverty. Choosing a manger for your crib, you honor simplicity.

In the lowliness of your birth, humility is praised.

As we look upon this scene, fill us with a spirit of poverty, simplicity of desire, and blessed humility.

Make our souls a new Bethlehem

where we will sing your praise for ever and ever.

Amen.

At Table Dur ing Chris tmast ime

Lord, Jesus,

In the peace of this season our spirits rejoice: With the beasts and angels, the shepherds and stars,

with Mary and Joseph, we sing God’s praise.

By your coming may the hungry be filled with good things, and may our table and home be blessed.

Glory to God in the Highest!

ADVENT CONFESSION Recognize the importance of receiving the Sacrament of Reconciliation in Preparation for Christmas. Do so ei-ther here at St. Eulalia Parish or in a neighboring parish. In addition to our regular time for confession on Satur-day afternoons from 3:00p.m. to 3:40p.m., there will be additional opportunities during Advent. Confessions will be heard on Monday, December 23, from 6:30p.m. to 8:00p.m. and on Tuesday morning, De-cember 24, from after the 9:00a.m. Mass until Noon.

ADULT CONFIRMATION Are you a baptized Catholic age 18 or older who has not yet received the Sacrament of Confirmation? Confirma-tion is the Sacrament that completes and strengthens your Baptism and gifts you in a deeper way with the presence of the Holy Spirit. Each spring our Bishops celebrate Confirmation for adults. For further infor-mation please call the parish office and leave a message for Father John or contact him at [email protected].

DECEMBER 22 ~ FOURTH SUNDAY OF ADVENT Today’s readings offer us great hope: “the virgin shall conceive, and bear a son, and shall name him Emmanu-el.” This name means “God is with us.” It is important that we remember this especially when the world is call-ing us to move faster – to shop more, to buy more. Don’t let the noise of the world drown out what you heard in today’s readings. Amid your business this week, repeat these words – “…they shall name him Em-manuel – which means God is with us.” God is with YOU!

FEAST OF THE HOLY FAMILY On the weekend following Christmas, December 28/29, we celebrate the Feast of the Holy Family. Make every effort to come to Mass with the members of your fami-ly. There will be a special blessing of families offered at all Masses.

NEW YEAR’S EVE WITH THE CARDINAL You are invited to begin the New Year in prayer with Cardinal Sean at the annual New Year’s Eve Vigil and Mass on Tuesday, December 31, 2019 at St. Clement Eucharistic Shrine Church, 1105 Boylston Street, Bos-ton (at the corner of Ipswich Street). SCRIPTURE FOR DECEMBER 22 First Reading Isaiah 7:10–14 (10A) The Lord offered Ahaz a sign. Ahaz answered, “I will not ask! I will not tempt the Lord!” Nevertheless, the Lord gave a sign: “The virgin shall conceive, and bear a son, and shall name him Emmanuel.” Responsorial Psalm 24:1–2, 3–4, 5–6 Let the Lord enter; he is king of glory. Second Reading Romans 1:1–7 Paul told the Ro-mans he was called to be an apostle and set apart to proclaim the gospel of God about Christ Jesus. He said to them, “We have received the grace of apostleship” that we may spread the name and bring to faith all those called to belong to Jesus Christ. Gospel Acclamation Matthew 1:23 The virgin shall conceive, and bear a son, and they shall name him Em-manuel. Gospel Matthew 1:18–24 Mary was betrothed to Jo-seph, but before they wed, Mary became pregnant through the power of the Holy Spirit. Joseph decided to break the engagement. He changed his mind when an angel in a dream told him to receive Mary as his wife.

THE UNBROKEN WORD………………………………………....MICHAEL J. CUNNINGHAM

Advent always seems to go too quickly for me. It makes us wonder why we need these special times in the li-turgical calendar to focus our attention on God as if the other times, “the Ordinary times” are less important to focus on God. Of course, this is not the intent, but as humans, we need to remind ourselves of our “belonging” to Christ. We are the Body of Christ and the preparation for welcoming the Child is an important focal point for our spiritual well-being. This belonging to Christ, and by implication of course, to each other is no more obvious during Thanksgiving and of course Christmas. We prepare for the arrival of others, or we move towards them if we are traveling. In my own family, this always means travel. Sometimes we (our children and grandchildren) travel to a common location, and at other times, we head out to wherever home is for one part of the family or another. This year, Sally and I are traveling to Singapore. As I pen this edition of The Unbroken Word, I am looking out at the view you see in the photograph. The view from my daughter’s family apartment in Singapore, where they moved to in September of this year. Here, we will spend Christmas together in Asia, grateful for God and one another's company. As we welcome Christ this season, let us also welcome another. Perhaps someone who you know is lonely, maybe an estranged friend or family member, someone in need. It may be surprising to you who is in need of a family dinner, a friendly face, a smile or even money at this time of year. The yearning for the presence of God at this time of year is heightened to levels that provide profound joy, and unfortunately, sadness as well. Let us not try and change the world just because it is the season of goodwill, but because it is always the season of goodwill. We have to become the dispensers, as is our calling. God Bless us all at this beautiful time of year, and let us Welcome The Child in many ways.

Reflection, and poem copyright 2019 by Michael J. Cunningham OFS

A COLD CHRISTMAS MORNING … BALLYLOUGHANE

Today, I don’t have to make the long walk to the farmer’s field, For today we are here with what is left of our family. My mother is busy in the kitchen readying the ingredients for the spice cake. The hallmark of Christmas in rural Ireland. 1943. I turned 14 yesterday; soon my part time activities will turnover in a few days from now. Gone will be forever the school days of Carricarrig, No longer a need to fill the lock with stones, Or other pranks to avoid learning. Mother’s soft voice comes from the kitchen, “Fetch some turf Michael” and I know I will be venturing out again, In the dank cold, to sneak across fields and take what is not ours to fuel the fire. Mother would never endorse such theft, but neither does she know the turf is not ours. After a successful commando raid, the turf is safely home, Mother kindles the fire in readiness for the baking in the simple oven, And soon enough, the smell of oriental spices and smoldering sultanas spreads over BallyLoughHane.

A Christmas indeed.
