Kidderminster has a strong cultural past as a major musical hub in the 60s and 70s with the Town Hall and Frank Freeman’s DanceClubplayinghosttomajorup-and-coming bands, boasting an impressive lineupincludingCaptainBeefheart,Manfred Mann and Led Zeppelin front man Robert Plant. The district has been home to Karl Hyde from Underworld, MikeSanchez,CliffordTWardandJohnBonham.

Dance teachers Frank and Wynn Freeman setupFrankFreeman’sDanceClubin1956andtaughtclassesaswellashostedbands.

Kidderminster still produces a large number of music industry stars via KidderminsterCollegeandishometo MAS records, a successful label for emerging musicians

This year Kidderminster Arts Festival will collect a bank of stories from local people and visitors, it will use them to create shows, exhibitions, street theatre and more in a month long celebration of the town’s unique musical history. This work will add to an archive that will continue to grow into the future and ensure that Kidderminster’s rich musical history and promising musical future remain in the public eye.

This will be the second wave of work associated with the ‘The Kidderminster Music Heritage Trail’ which will be an exciting multimedia trail ensuring that Kidderminster’s musical heritage is not lost and is entwined within the fabric of the town’s regeneration process. The first wave, already complete, includes new record stack seating and guitar neck benches. It enriches the visitor experience for local people and those with an interest in music creating a valuable tourist attraction.

This project has real regional significance and will help to re-shape the perception of Kidderminster and bring new audiences and visitors into the town.

The Music Heritage Trail helps people to understand Kidderminster‘s cultural and historical musical past and present, creating a legacy that will encourage tourism, engage communities and inform future creative projects in years to come. We envisage the trail will continue to develop over the coming years with permanent and temporary elements being added each year.

The Music Heritage Trail creates a distinct identity for the urban network of streets and squares, creating a mix of permanent physical works and temporary elements. The first installation of record stack and guitar neck seats can now be seen in Vicar Street.

The Music Heritage Trail and its associated events create a sense of place, enrich the lives of the local community, encourage participation and improve wellbeing whilst also improving economic prospects through increased tourism.

There has been significant interest in the music heritage of the town, increasing visitor numbers, creating a ripple effect for the town’s cultural and evening economy.
