President's Message April 8, 2014

Nothing like a busy time at our Club to keep John focused and on task; lunch at noon, music at 12:30pm, and program at 1:00pm. Amazing how short-winded John can be with a full calendar of events. A thank you to Robert for the invocation and flag salute, Jerry for managing the 50/50 Raffle, and Del for standing in as auxiliary Greeter; much appreciated!

Due to the tight programming for the day, announcements, visitors & guests, Happy Bucks & Fines, ABC of Rotary, Membership Moment and Birthdays & Anniversaries all were shortened to the point of non-existence. That said we did touch on a few announcements outlined below. Stay tuned for more this coming week!

The Top 10 Reasons for joining Rotary are included in this AXIS for your reading pleasure. In the method of David Letterman a la “The Top Ten...” the next reason to join our Rotary Club is this: Reason #1. “One person can make a difference and together as Rotarians we can have a stronger impact (I am one...Rotary is many)”.

JT is ready and willing to discuss birthdays and anniversaries! Stay tuned next week!

Carolyn reminded us of the Golf Tournament and Raffle Tickets; get your foursomes ready and help us make this a fun and successful effort for our Club!

John discussed the upcoming SBCC Vocational Scholarship Awards luncheon at SBCC; note we will be meeting at SBCC Cafe on Tuesday, April 22, and parking instructions will follow.

Our program covered two activities. First, a medley of Broadway Show Tunes by the Montecito Union School Choir followed by Chris Sariego of the Society of St. Vincent De Paul on their history and mission. The Montecito Union School Choir—led by Pam Herzog—is a dedicated group of Fourth, Fifth, and Sixth Graders who commit to serious practice every school morning developing a repertoire of songs and music. This spring the Choir

has been rehearsing a series of Broadway Show Tunes and we were fortunate to be their first audience. They performed an excellent rendition of recognizable tunes that had the audience tapping their feet and humming along. Well done!

Chris Sariego of the Society of St. Vincent de Paul, Council of Los Angeles, took us to the library for a presentation on one of the largest ecumenical organizations dedicated to serving the poor. Much like “Goodwill”, “Salvation Army”, and Unity Shoppe in Santa Barbara, SSVdP collects used possessions and recycles them with the proceeds going to support of their mission. Founded in 1833 in Paris, France by Frederic Ozaman, the organization is active in over 150 countries with over one million members and volunteers. While the need for organizations such as SSVdP is apparent from today’s poverty, homelessness, hunger, and more, it is the special efforts SSVdP brings to certain areas, like their Prisoner Resettlement Program, Cardinal Manning Center on LA’s Skid Row,

Circle V Ranch at Lake Cachuma, and their Learning Center where SSVdP is making significant positive impact. “Feed a man a fish and you solve his hunger today. Teach a man to fish and you feed him for life” is an apropos perspective on the efforts of SSVdP.

Geo Query: What main thoroughfares intersect Broadway at the “Great White Way”? also know as?

Wikipedia: Broadway is a road in the U.S. state of New York. Perhaps best known for the portion that runs through the borough of Manhattan in New York City, it actually runs 13 mi (21 km) through Manhattan and 2 mi (3.2 km) through the Bronx, exiting north from the city to run an additional 18 mi (29 km) through the municipalities of Yonkers, Hastings-On-Hudson, Dobbs Ferry, Irvington, Tarrytown and terminating north of Sleepy Hollow in Westchester County. It is the oldest north–south main thoroughfare in New York City, dating to the first New Amsterdam settlement. The name Broadway is the English literal translation of the Dutch name, Breede weg. Broadway is known worldwide as the heart of the American theatre industry.

One famous stretch near Times Square, where Broadway crosses Seventh Avenue in midtown Manhattan, is the home of many Broadway theatres, housing an ever-changing array of commercial, large-scale plays, particularly musicals. This area of Manhattan is often called the Theater District or the Great White Way, a nickname originating in the headline "Found on the Great White Way" in the February 3, 1902 edition of the New York Evening Telegram. The journalistic nickname was inspired by the millions of lights on theater marquees and billboard advertisements that illuminate the area.

Dear Colleagues:

Rotary is receiving significant international media coverage this week for its role in the historic polio-free certification of the World Health Organization’s South-East Asia region. Highlights include:

• CNN International: India beats the odds, beats polio• BBC.com : World now 80% polio free, World Health Organization says• The Guardian: India may be free of polio – but the disease hasn't been eradicated yet (op-ed by Archie

Panjabi)• Reuters: Q+A: India at risk until polio is eradicated globally-Rotary• The Wall Street Journal Online: Q&A: India Eliminates Polio• HuffPost Live:Violinist & Conductor Itzhak Perlman LIVE• Forbes.com: John Hewko explains polio's legacy

A complete report will follow next week. Please share the good news with others. I am also pleased to report that Rotary received extensive media coverage throughout 2013, with more than 626 news organizations in 35 countries featuring our humanitarian efforts. Of those, 58 stories appeared in top tier international news organizations, including nine out of the 10 most influential ranked by Forbes, including the Associated Press, The New York Times, BBC, Agence France Presse, The Washington Post and theWall Street Journal.

Rotary's role in the fight to end polio was highlighted in top-level, global media at unprecedented levels last year. And Rotary’s partnership with its celebrity ambassadors for polio eradication helped raise our digital visibility to new audiences via posts onendpolio.org and celebrity social media channels.

Special Message from John Hewko, General Secretary, Rotary International

Answer: In Manhattan at the intersection of Broadway and Seventh Avenue is the internationally known "Theatre District" or the "Great White Way". This is near "Times Square" another internationally recognized place to be on New Years Eve.

SANTA BARBARA AIRBUS MAKES THE DISTRICT 5240 GALA IN WESTLAKE A BREEZE TO ATTEND!

For those Club Members who attended the District 5240 Gala in Westlake this last March 15, one of the benefits was a easy ride down and back courtesy of Eric of Santa Barbara AirBus. Going above and beyond the call of duty, Eric and Santa Barbara AirBus picked up the attendees and delivered them to the Westlake Country Club door step with not a feather ruffled on anyone's boa. Upon completion of the event, what better service than a ride back to Santa Barbara with someone else doing the driving! Our Club and the Clubs of Group 8 extend our heartfelt thanks and appreciation to Eric and Santa Barbara AirBus for their contribution to making this evening one to remember!

Committee News: You will note increased activity on our Club’s “Signature Programs” like the “SBCC Vocational Scholarships” (thank you Kati and Carol!), and our "Annual Golf Tournament & Dinner" (thank you Carolyn, Bill, and Team!). These events seem to magically happen but actually take a lot of effort by dedicated Rotarians willing to pitch in and make things happen! Please thank these Rotarians the next time you see them for their efforts on behalf of our Club and Rotary!

Also, please extend a hearty "Thank You" to our Board and Committee members for their service to the Club this year. We would not be Club we are today without their efforts!

The process of updating the Paul Harris Fellow program awards credit for each Rotarian in the Club continues; please extend a hearty thank you to Joe Kirkland and Marc Fleischman for taking this on. In addition to sorting out what qualifies for PHF credit at TRF (The Rotary Foundation) we will be clarifying what each item on your quarterly invoice is and where your dollars go!

President’s MessageApril 2014

Dear fellow Rotarians,

Ron D. Burton President, Rotary International

Ron D. Burton

District 5240 Montecito rotary club axIS

Like attending a Rotary club meeting, reading Rotary magazines is an essential part of the shared experience of being a Rotarian. When you pick up a Rotary publication, whether it's Rotary Down Under in Australia and New Zealand, or The Rotary-No-Tomo in Japan, you'll find that every single one does just what it's meant to do: It informs, and it inspires. It keeps you up to date with Rotary news, brings you new ideas for your Rotary service, and tells stories that are relevant and meaningful to you. To me, these publications around the world are a tangible representation of Rotary's greatest strength: that each club is a local, community-based entity, engaged in a truly global network.

This organization is incredibly large and diverse, and as much as we all have in common in Rotary, we are not a place where one size fits all. Our expectations of a magazine, both culturally and linguistically, are naturally going to be different. With our regional publications, Rotarians in Bulgaria can find out what's going on in Rotary in Bulgaria, and what's going on elsewhere in the Rotary world, along with the latest news from Evanston. Because each one of our Rotary publications belongs to the family of Rotary magazines – each one is, like every Rotary club, both fully local and fully part of our international identity.

One of the greatest privileges of being RI president is the ability to speak directly, every month, to every one of our 1.2 million Rotarians. It's awe-inspiring to me, as I write this, to think of all of you, sitting down in your living rooms or at the breakfast table or maybe on the train to work, reading these words, and then turning the page to find out what's new in Rotary. And overwhelmingly, that is exactly what each of you does. Not just because your Rotary magazine turns up in the mailbox, or because you feel you have to – but because Rotary magazines are good magazines. I hope that when you pick up your publication – whichever one you're reading right now – you get the same feeling of pride, and ambition, that I do.

Rotary magazines remind us that as Rotarians, we are all part of something larger than ourselves. They show us just how much we can achieve through Rotary. Through them, we see what our Foundation dollars do, we see what our fellow Rotarians are doing, and we are inspired to Engage Rotary, Change Lives even more.
