2015-2016 Annual Report
Dear Friends,Allow me to introduce myself. My name is Holly Engelman and I am the current president of The Silver Academy Board of Directors. I am also the proud parent of two Silver Academy students. In the summer of 2010, my family moved to Harrisburg (to the house of Frances and Arthur Goldberg, z”l) and the next day my children started school at The Silver Academy.
I am grateful to all who have worked for the past seventy-three years to keep The Silver Academy strong. I want to especially thank Dr. Andrea Lieber, our immediate past president, for her hard work and dedication in leading the board for the past six years.
Thanks to The Silver Academy, my children are receiving a stellar education in general studies, a thorough and growing knowledge of Hebrew, and an ownership of their Jewish heritage.
Of greatest value, my children and their classmates are being educated in the most important mitzvot between people, in lessons that include recognizing the good in others, judging a person favorably, rushing to help a person in need and so many more. They learn to view all persons, independent of religion, as created in G-d’s image, B’tzelem Elokim. With the same sensitivity, the teachers value each student, nurturing their strengths and challenging them to grow both academically and spiritually. The family atmosphere and small class sizes at The Silver Academy encourage every child to make his or her voice heard. In addition, the rigorous analytical skills developed throughout the curriculum serve to raise the level of discourse, bolstering the students’ ability to be articulate and effective leaders.
For all these reasons, I consider supporting The Silver Academy holy work. Just as The Silver Academy has enriched our students, the students have been enhancing the Harrisburg community, the greater Jewish community, and the world for over seventy years.
It is our responsibility to ensure that The Silver Academy will continue to serve the community for many years to come. In this spirit, under the auspices of The Silver Academy Foundation, we have embarked on a process to create a Plan for Sustainability of The Silver Academy. In August, 2016, five working groups composed of Silver Academy board members, faculty, and community members met to brainstorm ways to ensure a thriving Silver Academy. We look forward to sharing the fruits of our labor with you as the year progresses.
Thank you for being a partner in giving our students “roots and wings”: roots to our precious tradition and wings to take their learning to a higher level. The confidence and moral compass our students develop propel them into a lifetime of leadership in giving back to the community and building a better world.
Holly Engelman, PhDPresident, The Silver Academy Board of Directors
Dear Friends,Three years into my tenure as Principal of The Silver Academy, I continue to be impressed daily by the work of our incredible faculty and motivated students. We are constantly raising the bar with new initiatives in our children’s education. This past year, the general studies faculty implemented a Writing Workshop curriculum across the grades. Our Judaics faculty has pioneered a new program to enrich each child’s knowledge of and connection through prayer. In addition to learning through experimentation in science lab, students are deepening their knowledge of prayer through “davening lab”.
Each day, I observe students challenging themselves throughout the dual curriculum. At our monthly school-wide Kabbalat Shabbat celebrations, I beam as I hear our middle school students inspire the whole school with a D’var Torah. Watching our students give back to the community in their Mitzvah projects on Martin Luther King Day, I see their values-based education at work. They continue putting their learning into practice while having fun on our Lag BaOmer field day, participating in sports activities and creating wonderful banners with themes Torah, Avodah, and Maasim Tovim. Most importantly, I see children who are proud and excited to be Jewish.
One of the most rewarding parts for me as Principal is watching the growth of each student from year to year. One of the graphs included later in the annual report are the Terra Nova scores. Although our scores have been consistently well above the national average, there is another story that I want to tell. Each year, I analyze the reports and the individual progress of the students. During the past year, all students matched or exceeded their scores from the previous year, some with very significant gains. This highlights the individual attention and instruction that The Silver Academy is able to provide. It is also a testament to the growth mindset of our school, believing that with dedication and hard work, every child can succeed.
With your help, we are developing the leaders of tomorrow. The experiences that our students have from Kindergarten through eighth grade provide them with the tools to thrive in our community of Harrisburg and well beyond.
With the utmost sincerity, I thank you for your financial support of The Silver Academy and I urge you to maintain or increase your support in the year to come. You are helping to educate the next generation of Jewish children and that is priceless.

Your Life - Your Legacy. . .“The Silver Academy welcomed us when we arrived in Harrisburg from New York 6 years ago. We were amazed at the level of caring shown for each student, as well as the openness to parent involvement. We have been treated as partners in our children’s education, not bystanders. Coming from a big city, where even the private schools have large classes, we do not take this for granted.
However, what we love most about The Silver Academy is its culture of inclusion. This is the legacy of Rabbi Silver, z”l, who worked to ensure that a quality Jewish education was the right of every Jewish child.
Diversity in the student population is embraced, and each student is valued as part of The Silver Academy family. We want to leave a legacy so that more generations of Jewish Harrisburg will have the opportunity to be enriched cognitively and spiritually in this exceptional school.”
I signed my letter of intent to remember the Jewish community in my will — Please join me!
- Holly Engelman

National Average
Terra Nova is a series of standardized achievement tests designed to assess student achievement in reading, language arts, mathematics, social studies, vocabulary, spelling, and writing. The students’ scores reflect their achievement in comparison to all students who took the test nationally. This is expressed as a raw score that is then converted to a percentile. In the 2015-2016 school year, the average percentile score for all subjects, in all grades, was far above the national average.
The Silver Academy launched our school store under a new name, Ollie Rosenberg’s School Store. Students started the morning being able to purchase everything from glow sticks to bouncy balls to pencils. After the school store, Peggy
Grove shared a little about Ollie Rosenberg, z”l and his business. She spoke of the importance of Tzedakah and supporting your community. Our students are fortunate to benefit from role models who give of themselves to help make our community better.
The Silver Academy Foundation supports the interests of The Silver Academy, and advances traditional Jewish education. Generous contributors started making “endowment fund” gifts to The Rabbi David L. Silver Yeshiva Academy in the 1970s. These gifts and others grew until the school’s board recognized that it would be prudent to place these funds into a separate entity, independent from the school. Founded in 1993 as a 501 (c)(3) organization, the Foundation received its initial funding from these early investments held by The Silver Academy. An independent board manages the Foundation’s assets. These initial investments have been supplemented by additional contributions made by friends of the School. This grew to well over one million dollars in the first decade of our existence.
For the last few years, an average of over $150,000 per year has been advanced or loaned to the School for scholarships and to supplement the budget leaving the current assets of the Foundation at a little over $200,000.
Members of the Foundation’s Board wish to thank you for your support.
