Global Citizens Programme Week 2011All the Secondary One students were taught mind-mapping skills and how to carry out effective research and identify reliable and relevant information sources. The culmination of weeks of research was an appetising dish suitable for a person suffering from a diet-related disease.

In March, 2 teachers and 15 Student Councillors from our school visited St Paul’s College in Hong Kong as part of the school’s Student Leadership Exchange Programme.

Participants had the opportunity to go on a school tour and to interact with the student leaders of St Paul’s College. They shared with one another the different Student Leadership programmes, an initiative implemented by the respective schools. Some of our students also shared about Anglican High School during the school’s morning assemblies.

It was an enriching experience for our students as they experienced life from the perspective of a Hong Kong student. The group visited the Archbishop of Hong Kong whose house is on the former grounds of St Paul’s College. They made many new friends and hope that this friendship between the two schools will remain intact.

English Language Week 2011 (EL Week)Every year, our students look forward to EL Week when they participate in games and activities to promote the use of the language. This year’s highlight was the inaugural Scramble Competition where Sec 1J, Sec 2G, Sec 3J and Sec 4F emerged as the Level Champions. These champions subsequently pitted their skills against a select team of teachers in the Teachers’ Challenge.

AHS Gives BackThis year, AHS students contributed to society in their own unique ways. The Secondary One students went to several neighbouring primary schools to conduct story-telling sessions while the Secondary Twos and Threes helped out at nursing homes and daycare centres.

From 11-15 April, students enjoyed a plethora of activities conducted to celebrate International Friendship Week, Humanities Week and English Language Week. Activities were also held to groom our students into global citizens.

MOE ExCEL Fest 2011The ExCEL Fest 2011 was held on 1 & 2 April 2011 at the Suntec International Convention and Exhibition Centre. The theme was “Different Pathways to Success: Strong Fundamentals, Future Learnings”. A team of teachers from our AHS English Department had the privilege to share their ideas from their Lesson Study on ‘Enhancing Prior Knowledge for Reading Comprehension’. Through the Sharing Session, the AHS team presented enthusiastically their findings on how the provision of prior knowledge through the use of multi-media would help secondary school students answer English Comprehension questions better.

First-Aid and Fire-Fighting Workshop 2011In line with the Safety Week 2011 in February, the school invited officers from the Singapore Civil Defence Force (SCDF) to conduct a workshop on First Aid and Fire Fighting for the staff. Besides learning from the interesting and informative presentations, the participants also had fun during a hands-on session in bandaging the ‘victims’ and using the fire-extinguishers. AHS, you are in safe hands!

Best Teacher Reflections 2011As practitioners, it is important for teachers to reflect on and document their teaching methodologies / strategies. This is currently being done by AHS teachers, using the PETALS Framework in the areas of Pedagogy, Experience of Learning, Tone of Environment, Assessment, and Learning Content. Each month, teachers with the best reflections are rewarded with little tokens. Congratulations to the teachers who have been selected!

Boys’ Brigade

Anglican High’s Boys’ Brigade 14th Singapore Company participated at the annual BB Blaze competition held in April. This year’s adventure race was held at various venues – namely Marina Bay, the Padang, Kallang Riverside, East Coast Park and the National Sailing Centre. The 45 km route tested our boys in various adventure skills such as map reading, orienteering, navigation, running, kayaking, ropes, knot tying, sports, arithmetic, National Education knowledge, cycling and archery. Of the 137 teams, representing 65 Secondary Schools, our school emerged in 10th place.

Girls’ Brigade

Our members showed their commitment to the Girls’ Brigade cause worldwide by initiating and executing a Valentine’s Day fund-raising during which they sold goodies like cornflake clusters, and roses, for the occasion. They collected the princely sum of $1,634.00 which was donated to GB Cambodia via our national headquarters. Our girls also gamely took part in the GB Flag Day in early March to raise funds for Girls’ Brigade Singapore. Our secondary one recruits had a taste of hiking and orienteering when they participated in a combined hike with the Boys’ Brigade.

Guitar Ensemble

The AHS Guitar Ensemble clinched a Gold Award at the SYF Competition after a gruelling preparation process. Apart from having to perform 2 pieces of contrasting musical styles, the 40-member ensemble also had to master virtuosic guitar techniques their challenging repertoire demanded. This was also the first time in the history of the guitar ensemble that the majority of participants were beginners from Secondary 2. Nonetheless, under the tutelage of their instructor Mr Frankie Shi and the guidance of the Secondary 4 seniors, the ensemble’s hard work paid off.

Choir

On 13 April 2011, the AHS Choir participated in the SYF Central Judging and clinched another Gold Award for the third time since 2007. Under the tutelage of their instructor Mr Terrence Toh, the choir performed three culturally distinct songs. The pieces range from a contemporary discordant piece by local composer Kelly Tang, a traditional Japanese song by Matsushita Ko, as well as a sacred piece by Randall Stroope. This challenging repertoire honed the choir’s versatile ability to transit seamlessly between 3 divergent pieces and exposed the students to a wide range of works that spanned different genres, cultures and historical periods.

Concert Band

On the 7 April 2011, the AHS Concert Band participated in the SYF Central Judging. After months of exhausting practices, the band’s hard work paid off when it managed to clinch the Gold Award—a prestigious honour awarded to only 18 schools this year. With its atmospheric interpretation of “Danse Diabolique” and their lively rendition of “The Singapore Flyer”, the AHS band managed to capture the hearts of the judges and audience alike with their heartfelt performances.

7-day cultural exchange trip to Osaka, JapanIn November 2010, the AHS Concert Band embarked on a 7-day cultural exchange trip to Osaka, Japan. The objectives were to expose our students to world-class music-making by internationally renowned University bands as well as to experience Japan’s rich culture and history.

On 4th April 2011, the AHS English Drama participated in the SYF Central Judging, attaining the Bronze Award. With Rebecca Tan of Class 4F as the lead actress, the drama group staged a production of the play “How Did the Cat Get So Fat”? by local playwright Zizi Majid. Under the instruction of theatre practitioner Ms Chio Su Ping, members worked hard to dramatize a complex play that critiqued the social inequalities in Singapore’s society. During the preparation process, they realised and appreciated the value of teamwork.

55th Anniversary RunTo commemorate the school’s 55th anniversary, a relay lasting 5 hours, 55 minutes and 55 seconds was held in the Indoor Stadium. Teachers, alumni members and students took turns to participate in the spirit of the event, and the atmosphere was vibrant with the energy of enthusiastic runners.

In your opinion, what contributed most towards the achievements of the team this year?

Ms Noriff: There was better teamwork this year, with a strong collaboration between the coach, teachers and players. The girls are also more disciplined and focused during training, especially in terms of building their physical fitness, which is crucial for the game. There was a clear drive to excel, and that was an impetus to push themselves through.

Ms Rosanne Tan: There was sheer determination, perseverance and fighting spirit in the team. Sportsmanship also shone through when faced with tough opponents. You have to stay focused on your goal. For instance, one of the players said that while she was

playing the 3rd singles, she faced a daunting crowd from both schools. But she convinced herself of how hungry she was to win, and focused only on the AHS supporters.

What advice would you give to all AHS athletes in achieving their goals?

Ms Noriff: Discipline is vital in achieving one’s goals. Each sports player should set small goals every training so that they are always aiming to make small but significant improvements each time. It is pointless to have training and not benefitted from it at the end.

Besides that, time management is also key. Students need to strike a balance and manage their priorities, such that they would not neglect studies or CCA, and also find time for their family and friends.

Ms Rosanne Tan: The AHS spirit must never waver. Having the school spirit would push students on to strive for the best. Also, students need to remember the various opportunities provided for them, and reap maximum benefit from them.
