OECD PublishingOECD Publishing is responsible for disseminating the content of the OECD (Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development) whose mission is to promote policies that will improve the economic and social well-being of people around the world.

The OECD brings governments together to share experiences and seek solutions to common problems. We don’t just work with governments, but also with business, labour, academia and other civil society organisations to understand what drives economic, social and environmental change. We analyse and compare data to predict future trends. We set international standards on all sorts of things, from the safety of chemicals to the quality of cucumbers.

We look, too, at issues that directly affect the lives of ordinary people, like how much they pay in taxes and social security. We compare how different countries’ school systems are readying their young people for modern life, and how different countries’ pension systems will look after their citizens in old age.

This information is published in books, journals and data services. All of them are available via our global knowledge base, OECD iLibrary.

OECD is one of the most innovative publishers in its field and one of the most prolific and reliable sources of comparable economic and social data.

OECD Core Values • Objective:

Our analyses and recommendations are independent and evidence-based.

• Open: We encourage debate and a shared understanding of critical global issues.

• Bold: We dare to challenge conventional wisdom starting with our own.

• Pioneering: We identify and address emerging and long term challenges.

• Ethical: Our credibility is built on trust, integrity and transparency.

OECD is well known for its methodology for measuring support to agriculture in an internationally comparable way. It also conducts policy reviews and analysis on agriculture and fisheries policies issues and carries out an annual medium-term forecasting exercise. The Producer Support Estimate (PSE – a measure of support to agriculture) is a key tool developed by OECD to compare agricultural policy performance across countries and to track progress in policy reform.

The International Energy Agency (IEA), which falls under the OECD administrative umbrella, was created in response to the first energy crisis back in the 1970s. IEA works to ensure reliable, affordable and clean energy for its 28 member countries and beyond. IEA addresses all types of energy sources. It gathers statistics on world energy markets, analyses those markets and the technologies that support them, and evaluates policies to make them operate better.

Did you know…

The Nuclear Energy Agency (NEA) represents much of the world’s best nuclear expertise, bringing together 29 OECD member countries. The NEA’s mission is to assist its member countries in maintaining and developing, through international co-operation, the scientific, technological and legal bases required for the safe, environmentally friendly and economical use of nuclear energy for peaceful purposes. It provides authoritative assessments and forges common understandings on key issues as input to government decisions on nuclear energy policy, and to broader OECD policy analyses in areas such as energy and sustainable development.

The OECD is a pioneer in promoting a better understanding of what science and technology do and could do, as well as the factors shaping how research is carried out and how it is then used. The OECD works with countries to obtain internationally comparable data and provide them with information on the scientific, technological and industrial environment and its relation to general economic goals such as growth and employment as a basis for examining the effectiveness of national policies.

Combating poverty and social exclusion remain high on the policy agenda in all countries within and outside the OECD. Providing benefits to people in need can help alleviate the worst social and economic hardship, but such policies cannot replace a comprehensive strategy of social development. Social policy work in the OECD covers a wide array of social, education and health policies implemented in a continuously changing environment of socio-demographic factors, labour markets, and technical progress.

OECD’s taxation work covers a broad range of activities, including tax evasion, harmful tax practices and environmental taxes. The OECD produces internationally comparable statistics, sets tax standards, such as the OECD Model Tax Convention and engages in monitoring and assessing policies. The in-depth analysis provides national authorities with options for reforming the tax system so as to improve efficiency, equity and enforceability.

Did you know…

… that OECD Model Tax Convention is the basis for over 3 000 bilateral tax treaties in force around the world and the main means for avoiding double taxation?

Reflecting the globalisation of industrial activities and the intertwined nature of trade dimensions with other policy fields, OECD work on trade has shifted from an emphasis on trade in goods to a more interdisciplinary consideration of trade issues. It helps forestall trade tensions and conflicts that emerge under the pressure of ever-intensifying competition. Trade work also encompasses the issue of export credits, trade facilitation, non-tarif measures and aid for trade.

Did you know…

… that trade declined sharply in 2009 and that the OECD is working on how policy responses could help restore financial stability and sustainable long-term growth?

The International Transport Forum (ITF), also under the OECD’s administrative umbrella, is a think tank for global transport policy, providing evidence-based insights for policy-makers and the global transport community. Its work is underpinned by economic research, statistics collection and policy analysis, often undertaken in collaboration with leading research figures in academia, business and government. The International Transport Forum maintains a range of statistics and indicators on transport, trade, infrastructure investment, road safety and global transport greenhouse gas emissions.

Did you know…

OECD work on this subject area examines how regions, whether urban, rural, crossborder or metropolitan, contribute to national growth. This work focuses onhow a place-based development model, a multi-sector policy approach that harnesses endogenous strengths and assets using networked, multi-level governance mechanisms, is best suited to achieve regional and aggregate growth outcomes. The integrated analysis of historical, cultural and socio-economic factors can explain why and how a given territory can improve its own prospects for growth and development.

Did you know…

… that OECD is actively working with national governments, cities and regions to highlight the role of metropolitan areas in delivering cost-effective policy responses to climate change?

OECD has been publishing statistical periodicals and serials since the Organisation began in

1961. With the arrival of electronic publishing OECD was one of the first to make all its content

accessible online. The PDFs dating back to 1998 represent an important archive for users wishing

to check older figures.

Now the presentation on OECD iLibrary offers the data in WEB, PDF and XLS formats to facilitate

discoverability and usability of the data. It has never been easier to find, use and cite the OECD

engine helping users find the right content

easily.

• The Quick Search box located at the top

of every page gives fast results based on

title and abstract metadata for the 50 000

items contained in the platform.

• Advanced search enables full text

searching and the use of Boolean

operators, as well as other parameters:

date, content type or language (English,

French, German, Spanish, Portuguese,

Digital Object Identifier & Citation ToolsThe use of Digital Object Identifiers (DOIs),

for all published items in OECD iLibrary,

allows the use of persistent and independent

links to the described content anywhere on

the internet. Information about a digital object

may change over time, including where to find

it, but its DOI name will not change and thus

always points to its original online presence.

The DOI name has two components, the

prefix and the suffix, which together form the

DOI name. A DOI name may be assigned to

any item of intellectual property, which must

be precisely defined by means of structured

metadata. The DOI name itself remains

persistent through ownership change and

remains unaltered once assigned.

All citation tools in OECD iLibrary feature

the DOI name as the reference link.

A new «Cite as» feature allows consistent

referencing of any full-text item on the site.

As an innovative tool, this feature also

includes the citation of dynamic databases

with a link to the original dataset and the

exact time at which it has been accessed.

The citation tool is compatible with popular

bibliographical reference software such

as EndNote, RefManager, ProCite and

RefWorks.

OECD iLibrary also provides subscribers with

COUNTER3-compliant usage statistics.

Three different reports are available, logging

usage statistics for full-text downloads,

meaning a user clicked on a PDF icon,

a XLS icon, a WEB icon or a DATA icon.

The reports will show monthly data for the

selected calendar year. All relevant content

titles are listed showing the actual usage with

the totals in the first row.

Available in CSV format, the page display will

allow a drop-down selection for the year and

for the type of report. In coordination with

COUNTER standards these reports are:

• BR1 (Book Report 1= Number of

Successful Title Requests by Month and

Title)

• BR2 (Book Report 2 = Number of

Successful Section Requests by Month

and Title)

• JR1 (Journal Report 1 = Number of

Successful Full-Text Articles Requests

by Month and Journal)

MARC records are available to all

subscribers using MARC21 XML format

according to U.S. Library of Congress

specifications. Bibliographic details for

books are available, covering monographs

and serials. OECD iLibrary also provides

records for all papers/journals and statistical

content. MARC records are generated in

English only, and describe the online version

of a publication/serial, including other

language versions.
