PHOEBE CLINICAL PASTORAL EDUCATION

Phoebe has been nurtured from the beginning by its affi liation with the United Church of Christ and has been serving the needs of the elderly since 1903. Today Phoebe serves over 1700 older adults, paying close attention to the spiritual well-being of every resident regardless of denomination or faith.

We view aging as a spiritual journey, a time for new opportunities and a time for harvesting the wisdom of the ages. We begin to harvest this wisdom by providing opportunities for refl ection and sharing with persons of all ages. Worship, Bible Study and Life Review sessions provided opportunities for residents to discover wisdom and healing in their later years.

Phoebe’s Faith in Action initiative fosters anenvironment in which residents, staff and students are invited to explore core values and beliefs. Core values include:

❖ Accountability ❖ Integrity ❖ Compassion ❖ Respect ❖ Ethical Conduct ❖ Stewardship ❖ Fruits of the Spirit

e Phoebe SettingThe Clinical Pastoral Education (CPE) program at Phoebe Ministries is designed to offer students opportu-nities to practice ministry in a variety of settings. Stu-dents may choose to minister on one of four campuses: Allentown, Berks, Richland and Wyncote. These settings offer educational experiences comparable to parish situations and provide invaluable opportunities for developing long term pastoral relationships.

In addition to ministering to individuals, families and staff, students have the opportunity to lead worship, Bible Study, bereavement and spiritual support groups. They are also invited to join in resident interdisciplinary care conferences and case consultations. Didactic presentations include:

❖ Spiritual Assessment

❖ Bioethical Issues in Aging

❖ Ministry to Persons with Dementia

❖ Life Review

❖ Family Systems

❖ Life Cycle Theory
