ODFW AQUATIC INVENTORY PROJECT STREAM REPORT STREAM: Dick’s Fork Big Creek BASIN: Big Creek (Ocean Basin) DATES: 7-12-05 to 7-27-05 SURVEY CREW: Kip Wood / Mark Stone REPORT PREPARED BY: Charles Stein STREAM ORDER: 2 BASIN AREA: approximately 8.3km 2 FIRST ORDER TRIBUTARIES: 7 USGS MAP: Yachats ECOREGION: Coast Range Mid Coastal Sedimentary HUC NUMBER: 17100205 LLID: 1240855443660 GENERAL DESCRIPTION: The Dick’s Fork stream habitat survey began at the confluence with Big Creek and continued upstream 3,483 meters. Three reaches were designated based on channel morphology and property ownership. The reach channels were constrained by alternating terraces and hillslopes. Land use was primarily mature trees and second growth timber. Gravel and silt and organic fines were the primary substrate types. Scour pools, riffles, and glides were the dominant habitat types. Large wood volume was moderate to high for the surveyed stream. The trees found most frequently in the riparian zones were hardwoods and conifers 30-50 cm dbh. COMMENTS Numerous coho, trout, and salmonid fry were observed throughout the survey. The crew noted salmon spawning gravels throughout the entire surveyed stream length. Evidence of deer and elk was observed. A potential natural barrier was observed (unit 266 – 3,210 meters from Big Creek confluence). This is a high gradient (20%) cascade over bedrock that is probably passable only at high flows. Very little beaver activity was observed.
