Three reaches were designated based on tributary contributions. The landuses were second-growth timber (15- 30cm dbh) and timber harvest. The substrate was primarily gravel and fine sediment. The habitat was dominated by scour pool; a quarter of the stream was dry. Hardwoods 3-15cm dbh were most frequently noted in the riparian zone. REACH DESCRIPTIONS: Reach 1 – T21S-R07W-S01SE – 1212 meters – Reach 1 extended 1212 meters from the confluence with South Fork Smith River to the confluence of Little South Fork Smith River Tributary A. The channel was constrained by high terraces in a broad valley. The average valley width index was 16.6 (range: 11.0-20.0). The average gradient was 0.6 percent. The landuse was second-growth timber. The dominant instream habitat was scour pool (75%); the primary substrates were gravel (59%) and fine sediment (25%). Riffle habitat contained eleven percent fines and sixty-eight percent gravel. Wood volume was 10.8m 3 /100m. The trees found most frequently in the riparian zone were hardwoods 3-15cm dbh (based on 2 riparian transects). Reach 2 – T21S-R07W-S01SE - 2061 meters – Reach 2 spanned 2061 meters from the Little South Fork Smith River Tributary A to Little South Fork Smith River Tributary B. The channel was constrained by high terraces in a broad valley. The average valley width index was 17.4 (range: 12.0-20.0). The landuse was second-growth timber. The average gradient was 0.8 percent. Thirty-six percent of the habitat was dry. The wetted habitat was mostly scour pool (46%) and beaver pond (9%). The substrate was primarily fine sediment (36%) and gravel (53%). Riffle habitat had twenty-four percent fines and seventy-four percent gravel. Wood volume was 6.2m 3 /100m. Hardwood trees 3-15cm dbh were the trees found most frequently in the riparian zone (based on 3 riparian transects).

Reach 3 – T21S-R07W-S12NE – 686 meters – Reach 3 extended 686 meters from Little South Fork Smith River Tributary B to the survey end. The channel was constrained by high terraces in a broad valley. The average valley width index was 9.5 (range: 1.5-20.0). The average gradient was 1.5 percent. The landuses were second-growth timber and timber harvest. Forty-two percent of the habitat was dry; wetted habitat was primarily scour pool (30%) and riffle (23%). The primary substrates were gravel (51%) and fine sediment (26%). Riffle habitat contained fifteen percent fines and forty-four percent gravel. Wood volume was 7.6m3/100m. The trees found most frequently in the riparian zone were hardwoods 3-15cm dbh (based on 2 riparian transects).

COMMENTS:

Fish were seen throughout the survey, from the first unit to the last (unit 205, 3875m). Juvenile fish (juv fish) was a catch-all for unidentified salmonids. Identified fish species were noted in the Comment Summary and included trout. No potential barriers to fish movement were noted. Wildlife sightings included deer track, beaver activity, rough-skinned newt, crayfish, bees, and garter snake.

The following has been transcribed from the crew’s field notebook: 08/17/09 – Unit 1-94 08/18/09 – Unit 95-146 – Unit 113 estimated. It was an LP but has been made a MX due to extreme bee densities. Unit 131 metric. Sorry about length from last metric, long beaver pools and nearly chocked units prohibited. Day 1 (08/17/09) was easy surveying. Long to short riffles to pools. A lot of bedrock. Wide active channel and little overhead growth made walking easy. Day 2 (08/18/09) was a totally different story. From the get go we hit heavy brush. A few units up we found the culprit. Beaver. Extremely slow going. Walking up through brush or crawling on our bellies. Slogging up heavily silted beaver pools. By days end, however, we had reached wide open dry and puddled units. Still wide active channel. Low gradients throughout. Many dry units encompassed dry LP. Had to call MX around an LP that contained a swarm of bees. 08/24/09 – Unit 147-190 – Late start after getting to office, driving to site, and setting camp. The day started off fine but became brushier with active channel narrowing. Low gradient. 08/25/09 – Unit 191-205 – Brushy throughout but we came to completely impassible areas. Swimming over brush was the only thing possible to make any progress. After a while of cursing at our progress, abt 10m in 10 min, we called a MX. We got out and fought our way upstream along the hillside in still heavy brush. We never came to an area that cleared. We called End Survey where we got out. I hated to but progress was impossible and we couldn’t even see our feet in the stream below us.
