“ODE TO JOY” Join a choir. Science shows it will make you feel
better.
Recent research confirms that singing in a choir is
actually beneficial to your health. For starters:
• Music making exercises the brain as well as the
body.
• Singing is particularly beneficial for improving
breathing, posture, and muscle tension.
• Listening to and participating in music has
been shown to be effective in pain relief proba-
bly due to the release of neurochemicals – nat-
ural painkillers responsible for the “high” expe-
rienced after intense exercise.
• There is also evidence to suggest that music
can play a role in sustaining a healthy immune
system by reducing the stress hormone.
• Regular choir members report that learning
new songs is cognitively stimulating and helps
their memory, and it has been shown that sing-
ing can help those suffering from dementia.
• Singing has also been shown to improve our
sense of happiness and well-being. People feel
more positive after actively singing than they do
after passively listening to music or even after
chatting about positive life events.
• Increasing evidence suggests that our social
connections can play a vital role in maintaining
our health – a good social network, for exam-
ple, can have more health benefits than giving
up smoking. So it’s possible that singing can
improve health by expanding your social group.
Indeed, the rapid social bonding that choirs
encourage could therefore be even more bene-
ficial. Even if you don’t necessarily talk to every-
one in the choir, you might experience a gen-
eral feeling of being connected with the group,
leading to a sense of increased community and
belonging.
(Jacques Launay & Elluned Pearce,
University of Oxford)
So there you have it! Excellent reasons for joining
the Clarksville Cumberland Presbyterian Church
Choir! A healthier you. BUT more importantly, you
will reap spiritual benefits as well. In Psalms we
read: “How good it is to sing praises to our God,
how pleasant and fitting to praise Him!” (147:1)
“Sing to the LORD a new song, his praise in the
assembly of his faithful people.” (149: 1) And for
those of you who think you are too old, recall the
words in Psalm 146: 2, “I will praise the LORD all
my life; I will sing praise to my God as long as I live.”
Choir rehearsal will resume Wednesday, August
23rd at 7:00 PM. Each year we extend an invitation
to anyone who would like to join this group as we
help lead worship and sing God’s praise. The choir
is not a closed group but open to all.
If you would like to participate in the Christmas
Cantata only; that is acceptable as well. If you have
questions or are interested please contact Paula
Louder. “Let everything that has breath, praise the
LORD. Praise the LORD.”
(Psalm 150: 6)

PASTOR’S CLASS
Thank you for the wonderful Pro-
gressive Dinner our youth were able
to have August 5th. Thank you to
each of you who opened your hearts and your
homes and nurtured us with your delicious
food. A special thank you to Jerry and Cresta
McGowan, Dennis and Martha Rucker, John
and Cheryl Routzahn, Jeff and Carrie Stovall
and George and Sue Kettle. We left with our
hearts and bellies full. This dinner was a wel-
coming event to 6th graders and we are
thrilled for the upcoming year.
IT’S NEVER TOO EARLY TO PACK A SHOEBOX
Now is a great time to buy Shoebox gifts if you're packing for a warm location. Flip
Flops, Sunglasses and T-Shirts are going on sale and are great items to pack. If you're
interested in a soccer ball for your box, epicsports.com has a great price, (under 6$) and good
price on the pumps as well. This year there cannot be candy or toothpaste in the boxes because
of customs issues. Also, shipping will now be $9 per box. I would like to challenge our Sunday
School Classes to start purchasing box fillers now. Our class has a closet that's quickly filling up
with items individuals have bought, and will have a packing party in early November. Our Church
had 143 boxes last year, and I would really like to see us do 200 this time. A WOW item like a
doll or soccer ball, school supplies, hair accessories, soap, soap dishes, water bottles, and small
toys are great. Dollar Tree usually has the best prices on the items. Let's work together to have
the best Shoebox year ever. Danny and I so appreciate all the help and support you give.
MONDAY, AUGUST 21
On Monday, August 21 the church
office will be closed due to the po-
tential traffic and safety issues as-
sociated with the Solar Eclipse that
day. All staff will be working from home and
can be reached by email or cell phone.
On Sunday, August 27th, we will celebrate
Christian Education through the recognition
of all of our teachers as well as cheer on our
children during Promotion Sunday. Everyone
is asked to report to their Sunday School
rooms for attendance and then join us in the
FLC as we celebrate.
Following worship, we will celebrate with a
church wide pot luck in the FLC. The church
will provide the meat, drinks and bread.
Please bring your favorite side dish.
IT’S TIME TO CELEBRATE
2017 CPWM HOLIDAY BAZAAR
Our annual bazaar is just around the corner
set for Saturday, November 4. This hot
weather has me inside busy working on my
bazaar projects!! As we begin our planning
remember we will again have our FUEL
Christmas tree covered with gift cards to help
fund our fuel program for the 2017-18
school year. This year if you would like to
donate $10.00 I will be glad to pick up gifts
cards instead of you having to go purchase
them. If you are planning on having a booth
this year we will have our registration forms
ready soon and in the church office for your
convenience. —Patty Averitt

CHURCH LIBRARY
Mrs. Doris Rinker is donating the book
“Imagine: 2016 Poetry Collection Winter Edi-
tion” to our church library in honor of Steve
and Paula Louder. Included in this book is a
poem written by Chelsea Parchman, the grand-
daughter of Russ and Karen Parchman and
great granddaughter of Doris Rinker. Chelsea
is a junior at Rossview High School. She wrote
this poem as an assignment and her teacher
submitted to be published. You can find her
poem on page 161. If you are not aware, our
church library is located on the 2nd floor of the
office building.
