Welcome to Brisbane Girls Grammar School’s Gala Concert—Ode to Joy, presented by the Instrumental Music Department.

While originally scheduled to be held at Queensland Performing Arts Centre, we are delighted to be able to share a special video production in lieu of our usual live performance.

This year’s concert—while paying homage to the 250th Anniversary of Ludwig van Beethoven’s birth—celebrates the joy of music, featuring stunning compositions that are triumphant, celebratory and festive.

Last year, when deciding the concert’s theme, the Instrumental Music Department could not have known the significance Ode to Joy was to have in 2020. Earlier this year, neighbourhood orchestras formed in Italy and Germany, with musicians of all abilities joining together to perform the title tune. From apartment windows and balconies, people sang and played, boosting community morale and spirits during a period of extended lockdown.

Despite the obvious challenges 2020 has presented, we have seen so many positive initiatives emerge at BGGS, and indeed within the Instrumental Music Department—new skills, new possibilities, creative online ensembles and now the School’s first online Gala Concert.

While Ode to Joy from the 9th Symphony was seen as an innovation of the era—marking the first time a famous composer used voices in a symphony—this year’s Gala Concert has also seen our girls innovate and adapt to a new form of music delivery. For the first time since the Gala Concert’s inception in 1996, the concert will feature all Instrumental Music students.

On behalf of the School, I thank Director of Instrumental Music, Mrs Emma Dron, Instrumental Music Staff, and our dedicated Music Support Group for their wonderful work in bringing this video production to life, and into the homes of our Girls Grammar families.

To our hard working and dedicated musicians and vocalists, although Gala Concert presents an opportunity to develop and refine your skills, it is perhaps most importantly, a celebration of music and a reminder of pursuing your passions for the inherent joy or satisfaction they offer. I thank you for reminding our community of the power of music in bringing happiness and joy to all, and look forward to watching Gala Concert 2020— Ode to Joy.

3ODE TO JOY—GALA CONCERT PRESENTED BY BRISBANE GIRLS GRAMMAR SCHOOL

As we near the end of this extraordinary year, so too draws to a close an annum that was to celebrate and honour the 250th anniversary of the birth of Ludwig van Beethoven. Specially curated concerts and large-scale festivals celebrating Beethoven’s music were planned to occur across the world this year, but sadly, many of these highly anticipated events were never to come to fruition.

As an artist-composer, Beethoven reflected the great social changes occurring during the late 18th and early 19th centuries. One such aspect of the Enlightenment was a change in human values, with more emphasis placed on the worth of each human being. One can only wonder what Beethoven would have made of 2020. Many musicians would agree that he would have drawn on his music as a source of emotional sustenance, using it to deliver a powerful message of hope.

That is certainly the legacy of one of the greatest musical works in the Western canon, the powerful 9th (Choral) Symphony. For almost 200 years, the famous Ode to Joy from this Symphony has symbolised hope, unity and fellowship, reaching across borders and surviving conflicts.

While the Brisbane Girls Grammar School Gala Concert—Ode to Joy presents glimpses of the famous theme in the opening and closing numbers, our event has not been curated as a concert of Beethoven compositions. Instead, we have taken the broad and uplifting theme of ‘joy’ as our inspiration. Another central theme to our concert, which resonates with the famous 9th Symphony, is that of unity. With more than 880 students participating in this year’s concert, the spirit of unity and joy resounds.

There is no doubt that the delivery of this event required us to draw on our resources in new and uncharted ways, however the reimagining of this year’s Gala Concert as a video recording also brought some unexpected and joyous triumphs, including the opportunity for even more student involvement. Additionally, with the opportunity to share our online concert, friends and family around the globe can now access and enjoy our musical offering like never before.

Gala Concert 2020—Ode to Joy will present masterpieces by composers undoubtedly influenced by the great Beethoven. Respighi’s Bergamasca from his Ancient Airs and Dances is a jubilant setting of an Italian Renaissance dance, and Gustav Holst’s Jupiter is a musical personification of the planet known as the Bringer of Jollity. Ernst Bloch composed the effervescent Serenade for Strings in response to feedback from his mentors that his music needed to be more uplifting. The School’s Big Band delivers quintessentially joyous tunes with Make me Smile and the ever-popular Happy by Pharrell Williams. The final number in our concert offers a contemporary pairing of a work by one of Beethoven’s greatest influences, JS Bach’s Jesu Joy of Man’s Desiring, in clever combination with the familiar Ode to Joy melody.

The tone of this year’s Gala also provides sweeping contrasts of mood, featuring sublime uplifting pieces such as Ola Gjeilo’s Tundra, and Brian Balmage’s Greater Than, both of these works allowing for the participation of hundreds of performers.

It is with deep gratitude that I acknowledge the extraordinary efforts of the Instrumental Music Department in designing, developing and delivering this special concert production. This Gala Concert is most importantly a celebration of the achievements of our musicians, who, with resilience, resolve and flair, rose up in these difficult times to work together with determination and joy, to prepare and present this special concert for you all.

What should not be forgotten by our community, as we enjoy and celebrate the uplifting performances of the Gala Concert— Ode to Joy, is how incredibly fortunate we are, that in our part of the world, such a production has been possible. This was most poignantly expressed to us when we shared a draft version of the Greater Than performance with the composer, Brian Balmages. His emotional message on viewing the video reminds us of the millions around the world for whom being at school, making music together is still an impossibility, and that what we are presenting here for you all is not just a concert, it is a gift. A gift of hope.
