Purpose Omaha is a divided city; each section has a

distinct culture North Omaha South Omaha West Omaha

The purpose of the Omaha Culture Walk is to provide teacher candidates with opportunities to experience the culture and history of these diverse neighborhoods as they relate to teaching and learning

The Experience

For each neighborhood (North O, South O, West O) there will be four meetings (12 total meetings)

First Meeting

Meet at UNO for an overview of

statistics and information about

that neighborhood’s culture

Page 5: Ocw

Second Meeting

Meet with a panel of community

experts to discuss the challenges

and resources in the community

Page 6: Ocw

Third Meeting

Meet in a community school to

discuss culturally responsive

teaching strategies with teachers

and administrators

Page 7: Ocw

Fourth Meeting

Meet virtually on the wikispace to

reflect on learning and the impact

of information gained through the

Culture Walks.

Benefits Personal enrichment – You can increase your

understandings of your community. Make connections– You can meet area teachers,

community members and administrators. Job preparation- You will be asked about personal

experiences with diversity in every interview. Prevent ‘Culture Shock’ - You will be better

prepared for what you will experience when you begin teaching
