OctopusThere are many different types of octopus. They live in the ocean and eat fish, crabs and sharks.

Octopuses have eight tentacles which have strong suction cups (suckers). These suction cups help the octopus to smell, taste and hold onto their food. They have three hearts and their blood is blue.

Octopuses can protect themselves by changing colour to look like their surroundings. They can also shoot a dark ink that can hurt other animals. This ink is also dangerous for the octopus so they must swim away from it quickly.

Did You Know...? Some octopuses can change the shape of their bodies to make them look like other sea creatures.

OctopusThe natural habitat of the octopus is the world’s oceans. They prefer warmer waters and can be found along the ocean floor. There are many different species and sizes of octopus.

They are invertebrates and have four pairs of tentacles which surround their head (also called a mantle). They have powerful suction cups (suckers) on each tentacle which help them to smell and taste. Their diet includes fish, crab, lobster and shark. The strong suction cups help them to latch on to their prey. They have three hearts and their blood is blue.

Octopuses have different ways of protecting themselves, including camouflage. This means that they can change colour and blend in with their surroundings. They can also release a dangerous, dark liquid that distracts and confuses predators.

Did You Know...? This liquid is also dangerous for the octopus so they must quickly swim away from it.

Scientists believe that they are intelligent and playful creatures.

Did You Know...? Some octopuses can change the texture of their skin to match their environment. They can also change the shape of their bodies to make them look like other sea creatures.
