    NOTICES

    Fluff up your Feather Dusters

We at St. Cecilia's need your help to keep the church clean and welcoming for the many people who come in throughout the year for services, weddings, baptisms etc. If done regularly it only takes 1-2 hours each month of vacuuming, polishing and dusting to maintain a 'sparkling' appearance. We know you all lead busy lives but all we are asking is for 2 hours of your time every 6 months or even just once a year! Whatever time you can give will be hugely appreciated and the more people who help, the less often that help is needed. If you have any time to give please contact me on 01296 715519 or email me at [email protected]

    Adstock Parish Counc i l

Chairman: Cllr Simon Walker, Vice Chair: Cllr Chris Dawe Councillors: Cllr Sue Braithwaite, Cllr Doug Randall, Cllr Neil Fraser-Smith, Cllr Marianne Murphy, Cllr Paul

    Salver

Email: [email protected] Amazing / Fantastic news!! You could have broad band speeds of …100 times faster than today! Fast internet access and broadband is a major issue for many in Adstock and was one of the most commented on issues raised in the recent Village Survey. Currently Adstock is served by traditional telephone lines (copper wire) connected to various boxes at the Winslow exchange. Super-fast fibre broadband is now common in many cities, towns and villages across the UK since the government provided significant funding to BT/Openreach to connect 95% of homes by 2020. Unfortunately, many small villages like Adstock are not on the list for upgrading for the foreseeable future due to the cost of supplying small, remote villages There is however a potential solution that we have been working on for over 9 months with BT / Openreach that we are hopeful will deliver Super-Fast Broadband to most homes in Adstock within the next few months. For this solution to work we need the support of all villagers as the more homes we have in the scheme the more funding we can obtain and the less burden there is to find additional monies.. We are therefore hosting a community meeting at the Village Hall on Tuesday 10th October at 7.30pm to provide information, answer questions but most importantly to gain the support of as many homes as possible. We hope you can make it but if unable to attend and/ or need more information please contact Simon Walker - [email protected] / 07901854623 or John Townley - [email protected] / 01296 713685) Current Planning Applications September 2017 Current planning applications on AVDC planning portal Can be seen @ https://publicaccess.aylesburyvaledc.gov.uk/online-applications/search.do?action=simple

ADSTOCK PLAY AREA MEETING On 22nd July we held an open meeting up on the Play area to find out people’s views on a possible refurbishment of the equipment.

We wanted to hear from both Adult and Children on what sort of equipment is needed for the future. Over 50 Adults attended and 30 Children, even if some of them were babes in arms! What a turn out!!! And the children confirmed it had nothing to do with the free ice cream!

Everyone had the chance to complete a Questionnaire and to select the best bits of equipment. We had 45 questionnaires completed and at least that number added their stickers to the board to select their favoured equipment.

The favourite for both Adults and children was a Zip Wire, followed by a Climbing Dome or frame. There was a clear desire to maintain a balance regarding the age range of equipment so that for instance both older children and toddler swings were needed. A very important requirement was made clear by one of the children “As much equipment as possible must be disabled person friendly” and we have taken that very much on board.

We also asked for ideas and they were very constructive, A BBQ / Picnic area with tables, Covered seating, Boules pitch, Adult exercise equipment, Interactive garden, Exploration area, more events to be held in the park etc.

We are now looking at which of these ideas we can take forward ourselves i.e. BBQ /Picnic area with tables which may not cost a lot of money to provide and how we might get the ball rolling and start installing one or two pieces of new equipment bearing in mind that if we did everything we would have to raise approximately £200,000.

The Fundraising Committee is meeting on the 9th October and we will then be in a position to apply for Grants and to look at possible phases for putting new equipment into the Play Area. The Parish Council will of course continue to maintain and ensure the safety of all the existing equipment.

Thank you to everyone who came and contributed to the day. Neil Fraser-Smith

    RIDE AND STRIDE 2017

Do Indian summers exist anymore? If so they have bypassed Adstock for the last couple of years. Once again, on the day of Ride and Stride we had clouds and showers - albeit not as bad as last year. And it was chilly. As always, however, that did not deter our intrepid participants. Andy Rolls ran around the 4 churches in our benefice in an amazing 1 hour and 40 minutes. Danny cycled round – TWICE – in an unbelievable 1 hour and 30 minutes. Andy, however, had a 40 minute head start so he was first back and the winner. (Hands up all those who think the head start needs reviewing in the future!) Last year, Linda Spencer rode her horse around the route. This year she cycled – visiting an incredible 10 churches from Winslow to Preston Bissett and everywhere in between. And, not to be outdone, Phil and Liz Smith and Dianne Varley and their girls took to the saddle and cycled around half of the benefice. How many other villages can boast this amount of athletic prowess? A huge thank you to everyone who took part and to everyone who supported them by donating. We have so far raised some £500 for Bucks Historic Churches Trust and St. Cecilia's. A fantastic achievement. And the winners in the raffle were:

    1. Meal at The Old Thatched Inn - Jo Nicholson 2. Bottle of whisky – Linda Holmes 3. Bottle of wine – Simon Walker

Bookings Alison Walker – 713397 Rate for hire of Hall - £10 per hour

For bookings please contact Alison Walker on 01296 713397 – [email protected] Life starts all over again when it gets crisp in the autumn – so wrote F. Scott Fitzgerald in the Great Gatsby. Here in the Village Hall Autumn started with a wonderful (if slightly damp) evening of safari supping where it was good to see some new faces, as well as plenty of old(er) ones. Next up is the Quiz night on the 11th November, so brush off the encyclopaedia, set University Challenge to series record and check if you can get 4G in the Village Hall. Fame and glory to be had for the winning team (or at least wine and a small trophy) and fish and chips and a good time for all; get in touch with Alison Walker if you would like to attend. No further events are planned for this year so if you have an idea for a Christmas social please do get in touch about hall hire, otherwise look out for details of the first event of 2018, a cheese and wine quiz in early February. The Village Hall is an asset for all villagers so if you have an idea for a village event you would like to arrange, or are looking to set up a club, or have a private event you would like to hold there, please get in touch with a committee member. Similarly if you would like to be more involved in village events why not join the Village Hall committee - we are always seeking new members and would welcome you gladly! THE ADSTOCK SCIENCE CLUB

I’m afraid to say that this current Science Club report is going to be a bit shorter than usual. Some of you will already know that the missus and I have recently returned from a marathon five week holiday in the States, because of this we decided that The Adstock Science Club would also take a bit of a holiday. Before I give you an outline of September’s talk let me just say that if you haven’t been to the Grand Canyon, put it on your “Bucket List” NOW. It was one of the most incredible places we have ever been to. The first time you see it, you cannot help going “WOW!” From a scientific point of view it shows you just how incredible the power of what looked like a small stream, from where we were standing, the Colorado river, has in shaping its surroundings over millions of years, and also you get to see just how beautifully layered the rocks (I don’t know what else to call them) are. A heaven for geologists.

Now to our recent talk which was presented by one of the science club’s members, Mr John Foggitt. His talk was entitled “Number, Shapes, Colours and Sounds” where he tried to show how numbers are involved in many aspects of our life experiences.

He explained and demonstrated how colours are perceived by the human eye and how these colours could be generated by red, green and blue pixels by a TV screen or computer monitor, and the way that by altering the ratio of red, green and blue fools the eye into seeing a beautiful vivid scene on these devices. Similarly with regards to sounds John talked about how sounds are stored and reproduced digitally on CDs and DVDs. And lastly he showed us how some beautiful shapes could be created just by utilising the power of the computer to manipulate numbers with simple algorithms within a graph like environment.

So there you have it, our next talk will be Professor William Murray, who works at the LHC, on “The discovery of the Higgs Boson”. The search for the Higgs boson took 50 years and culminated in the 27 Km LHC and its experiments with thousands of people. The motivation and challenges of this search are reviewed by Professor Murray, who was coordinating the search on one of the experiments, ATLAS, in the run up to the discovery. Some time will be devoted to the implications for physics, and why it was decided in 2016 to run the LHC for an extra 10 years.

Actually, now that I’ve finished this article, it doesn’t look that much shorter than usual, oh well!

    THE ADSTOCK HISTORY CLUB

Susan Fern visited the Adstock History Club on the 20th September, and entertained the group with her talk entitled ‘The Lenborough Hoard’. The hoard of more than 5,000 Anglo Saxon coins were unearthed in December

2014, and included a uniquely-stamped coin, possibly the result of a mix-up at the mint, more than 1000 years ago! Metal detectorist, Paul Coleman, discovered the coins, when exploring the field in Lenborough with other enthusiasts. Whilst on the field, his detector received interference from one belonging to another member of the Weekend Wanderers metal detecting club, and he therefore moved to a different part of the field. Initially he thought he had detected a manhole cover, but he unearthed 5,248 coins! 985 coins dated from the reign of Aethelred of Wessex in the 990s and a further 4,263 were minted during the reign of his successor, Cnut the Dane. The most unusual coin was an Agnus Dei coin containing a lamb and flag –and is possibly unique. The lamb should have a dove of peace on the reverse, but it has a short cross.

Susan’s talk was fascinating and gave us an insight, not only into the discovery, but also into life at that time, and the way money was minted in the past. It was a time of great change - when the throne of the kingdom of England passed from the Anglo Saxon Aethelred of Wessex to Cnut the Dane, who ruled a great North Sea empire that included England, Denmark and much of Norway. It was also a period of instability, when the kingship in this country passed from Saxon to Dane and then, following the deaths of Cnut’s sons, back again to a Saxon. New coins at this time were issued every few years, with holders of old coins having to pay a tax if they tried to use them. Therefore old coins were returned in order to be melted down and recast. It is possible that the coins were being returned to the mint in Buckingham, but we will probably never know why they were wrapped in lead and buried in the field. Our next History Club meeting will be on the 18th October, when Jason Rush will be giving a talk on Operation Market Garden. On 15th November Laura Malpas will be talking about ‘Secrets and Scandals of Canons Ashby’ Visitors are always welcome! For more information phone 01296 712 561 Jenny Stuart

    The Adstock Singers

Music in Adstock!! The Adstock Singers were meant to have a break over the summer holiday, but at least some of us met most weeks to have a sing, as we have been enjoying it so much! We have been joined by two new members, Debbie and Jo, and have already started working on the Christmas programme. This will include a great variety of music, as usual, including works by Elgar, John Rutter (of course!) Simon and Garfunkel, Mariah Carey and others. There will be also be a Christmas medley, to tease the ears with fragments of well-known Christmas songs...and others. Our Christmas concert which will be held on the 10th of December at 5pm in St Cecilia's church here in Adstock. It will be rather special this year, as we are raising money for Willen Hospice in memory of our pianist and very good friend Martin Gough, who died in August. He was a wonderful man with a great love of music and sense of humour, which we hope will be reflected in the concert! However, in the meantime we are also looking forward to our Soiree, to be held on the 30th of September! This will be our third Soiree, and, though we say it ourselves, the last two were very successful and a lot of fun. Do try and come if you can. There have been rumours of storytelling, comic sketches, fiddling and magic tricks, along with performances by the village's very own rock group, AGOG, but you won't know what's on the menu unless you turn up!

New Choirs In other news, we are also thinking about starting a children's and a men's choir, depending on interest – initially just to sing a couple of items at the Christmas concert, but who knows where they could go from there? If you are a child or a man interested in singing, please contact Lucy on 07798 504410, or [email protected] Lucy
