BISS and Group Winning
Ch. Mi Moon Shadow(Ch. Tom Lee Manchu of Knolwood, ROM x Ch. Mi
Aphrodite's Nightee, ROM)
Our "golden girl" has had a very impressive summer with her handler
C.L. Eudy. In mid-August she had a wonderful time at the Astro Hall and San
Antonio shows. Beginning with a BISS under Judge Dorothy Welsh, she went
on to win six BOB in seven shows, over a large entry in specials, as well as
class dogs.
On the cover she is shown winning a Group II underJudge Ray Filbourn,
in a very competitive group. She was awarded two other group placements
during that week. Her statistics as a specials read as 51 BOB and 21 group
placements, thru Labor Day. On that day she got a Group 1 under Judge
Georgia Buttram.
"Trouble" is one of a very special litter, the last for her sire BIS Ch. Tom
Lee Manchu of Knolwood, resulting in four champions, all finished in 1993.
Watch for this special team in the group ring near you.

THE SQUEAKY TOY APPROACH TO OBEDIENCE
BY DIANE GOODS PEED
I began obedience work with my Lhasa,Sandy, In August, 1991. Sandy com-pleted her CD In October, 1992, and weused scores of 192.5, 193 and 196 toqualify for the 1993 Cycle Eastern Re-gional. We only had two qualifyingscores out of three at the Regional, butwe learned a lot about nerves, stressand travelling! In November, 1993,Sandy completed her CDX In threestraight shows and we used scores of191, 193.5 and 197 to qualify for the1994 Cycle Eastern Regional. At the '94Regional In August, Sandy broke the sitstay In two classes but otherwise Lostonly 17.5 points over the three classes. This Fall we have continued our utilitywork and hope to start matching inearly 1995.
Besides squeaky toys, which Sandy willdo practically anything for, there areseveral factors that have helped uscompete successfully In obedience.
A Competitive Trainer
Our most important asset is BetsyScaplcchlo, our trainer. Betsy was horri-fied In August, 1991 , when she learnedthat a new student wanted to competeIn obedience with a Lhasa. Today, Betsyshares our disappointment when wedon't score In the 190's1 Betsy has over15 years experience as an obediencetrainer, has competed with four differ-ent breeds (six counting her daughters'sheltie and border terrier), and currentlyhas students working In utility with every-thing from Border Collies to TibetanTerriers. A trainer who Is willing to work
with any breed is a must. In addition,it Is more difficult to compete with asmall dog particularly during theheeling exercises and that's 1/3 ofyour score in Novice! Betsy under-stands this difficulty and helps modifyher exercises to solve the problemsencountered with small dogs. Occa-sionally, we also modify the exercisesfor that Lhasa mentality!
A Positive TrainingMethodology
A lot of Sandy's success has to beattributed to the methods with whichshe was trained. Three years of train-ing cannot be covered in one article, however, some of the basics are:
Positive Reinforcement - From DayOne Sandy has been trained usingpositive reinforcement. Many trainingtechniques allow the dog to make amistake, then correct the mistake, and then ask again for the correctbehavior. This may work for somebreeds, but It is guaranteed to angerand frustrate a Lhasal All our exer-cises are structured to obtain thecorrect behavior (versus allowingIncorrect behavior that must becorrected). This minimizes the devel-opment of bad habits that must beuntrained and Sandy stays enthusias-tic throughout each practice.
Use of a Reward - A reward quicklylets Sandy know that her action was
28
correct. I use both treats and toys(especially squeaky toys) depending onthe exercise and Sandy's level of under-standing. When introducing a newexercise I use more treats and as Sandybuilds confidence, I alternate treats, toys and verbal praise.
Teach Your Corrections - This is neces-sity for Lhasa training. As you know,Lhasas get mad when they are cor-rected and, if pushed, they quitl Inorder to prevent these situations asmuch as possible, I find it helpful toincorporate my corrections Into ournormal practice routine before I needthem. For Instance, one of my correc-tions for lagging during a fast is to reachdown and "pop" Sandy back into heelposition. Inttially, Sandy would stopcompletely when she saw my handcoming, so I added a new exercise toour heeling. I occasionally reach downto offer a treat or tug gently on hercollar. Sandy is now used to me reach-ing down and this allows me to makean effective correction when necessarywithout her getting 'mad" at the cor-rection.
Trial Selection
I recommend selecting your trials verycarefully. Although I had Betsy's experi-ence to rely on, I still learned a lot thehard way and I now consider severalfactors very carefully before entering atrial.
Indoor vs Outdoor Trials - Sandy thinksgrass is for playing on. So, we concen-trate on Indoor shows. She understandsthat when she Is on a rubber mat'Camel' means right here this Instantand sit front. On grass, Sandy thinks
'Camel' means when she's ready andsorta In my direction. Ah, the points welost while I figured this Lhasa logic out!
Obedience Club Trials - I have alsofound that at trials held by obedienceclubs the attention is on obedience, notbreed, and that obedience clubsunderstand what distracts a workingdog. This Is not to say that all combinedshows are bad, but I prefer to get a'reference from someone who hasshown at the show In previous years.
Know Your Judges - Again, I have theadvantage of Betsy's years of showing. She knows which Judges like the 'look'that she creates and which Judges arewilling to give a high score for a goodperformance. It is frustrating to practiceand match for months only to showbefore a Judge that scores the Open Adogs like they are Utlitty BI I get a rec-ommendation from Betsy or a fellowcompetitor for every Judge before Ienter a trial.
In conclusion, I would like to say thatwith the techniques being used todayto train obedience dogs, Lhasas canget obedience titles and can competesuccessfully against those Border Colliesand Golden Retrievers!

iimmii;mammimiVIAMMARY CANCER IN THE BITCH
Canine mammary tumors are very com-mon neoplasms in the dog, and despite newresearch into the pathology and populationdistribution of thee tumors, little is knownregarding the clinical management and causeof canine mammary tumors. The dog developsmammary tumors more often than any otherdomestic animal, half the tumors are malig-nant; they occur in older animals, andovariohysterectomy prior to the onset of estrusreduces the risk of developing such tumors. Atpresent, the preferred treatment is surgicalexcision, while in the future chemotherapy, immunotherapy or radiation therapy may offerpatients increased quality and length of life.
IncidenceMammary tumors are the most commonneoplasm in the bitch, accounting for 25 to 50percent of all neoplasms in the female dog.The male dog rarely develops mammarycancer. Bitches develop mammary cancerabout twice as often as women. No breed ofdogs seems to be at an increased risk fordeveloping mammary cancer.
The risk of developing mammary tumorssteadily increases after six years of Age, andmost common age of onset is between ten andeleven years. About one-half the mammarytumors in the dog are malignant, and theremainder are benign. No correlation has been shown to existbetween hormonal imbalance, false pregnancyor pregnancy and the development of mam-mary cancer. There is very strong evidencethat spayed or neutered bitches have a lowerrisk of developing mammary tumors.Ovariohysterectomy before the first estrusreduces the incidence of mammary cancer bysevenfold. After two and a half years of age,the beneficial effects of ovariohysterectomyare eliminated, and once a mammary tumordevelops, there is no advantage ofovariohysterectomy. The exact role of hor-mones in the causation of mammary cancer isunknown, but early neutering does reduce theincidence of disease dramatically.
History and Clinical FindingsThe mammary mass is usually the first
sign of disease, and may be detected by the
by Alan H. Norris, DMV
owner during grooming, or by the veterinarianon a routine physical examination. A thoroughhistory is obtained, including informationregarding when the growth was first noted, how quickly the mass is enlarging, andwhether growth of the mass is associated withthe estrus cycle. As the tumor enlarges, it mayulcerate and begin to discharge, resulting in afoul odor. If the tumor is very large, it mayinterfere with limb movement and causelameness.
There are five pairs of mammary glands, numbered one through five. The first mammaeis under the forearm and the fifth mammae isthe groin. About 65 percent of mammarytumors are in the fourth and fifth mammae. Alarge number of mammary tumors are themammae should be closely palpated. The sizeof the mass is of little importance, and manysmall tumors are highly malignant, while largetumors may be benign.
Diagnostic ProceduresThe animal with a mammary mass is
usually middle aged or older, and we mustevaluate this geriatric patient not only for themammary tumor, but also for concurrentdisease which could affect how we deal withthe mammary tumor. For example, a detailedcardiovascular examination is indicated in allgeriatric patients scheduled for surgery, andthis should include an electrocardiogram ifthere is a suspicion of cardiac disease. Anumber of routine blood tests are performed ingeriatric cancer patients, and these includeevaluation of red blood cells and white cells, tests of kidneys function as well as urineanalysis.
A chest radiograph is performed prior tosurgery to assess the lungs for the presenceof metastases (spread from the primarytumor). Spread of the tumor to the lungindicates anadvanced stage of the diseaseand usually precludes further treatment.
Lymph nodes that drain the mammaryglands are found under the arm and in thegroin, and should be closely palpated for anyenlargement. If a lymph node is enlarged, itshould be removed surgically to evaluatewhether the tumor has spread. In women with
breast cancer, involvement of regional lymphnodes indicates more advanced disease andmore aggressive therapy is indicated.
To further classify the tumor as benign ormalignant, a needle aspiration of the mass isperformed. A trained pathologist can ofteninterpret a needle biopsy and give the clinicianor surgeon an indication of how aggressivesurgery should be. Some owners, uponconfirmation of malignant tumor, elect not totreat their pet, and a needle aspiration canconfirm malignant disease without the neces-sity of surgery.
TreatmentThe preferred method of treatment is
surgical incision of the tumor. Once a tumor isdetected, immediate veterinary advice shouldbe sought, for early treatment can result in acure. The decision to operate is affected by thepresence of metastatic disease and otherexisting diseases. The surgical technique to beused varies with individual patients, taking intoconsideration the age of the patient and theextent of the disease. The surgical techniqueto be used varies with individual patients, taking into consideration the age of the patientand the extent of the disease. Isolated removalof a mass may be performed if the tumor isbenign, or in cases of an older sick patient. Inmost cases complete removal of the mammaryglands including the draining of lymph nodes isdone. All tissue excised should be evaluatedby a trained pathologist, to stage the diseaseprocess, and to determine the type of tumorpresent. As certain types of tumors afford thedog a very poor prognosis, while other tumorsare favorable, it is essential to identify alltumors microscopically. Surgery is curative inapproximately one-half the dogs with malig-nant tumors.
In cases where surgery cannot completelyremove the tumor, other forms of therapy areneeded. Postoperative radiotherapy as ameans of killing tumor cells has been widelyused in women with breast cancer, and whilethis technique is applicable in pet animals, it islimited by the high cost of equipment. Newerforms of therapy is breast cancer include theuse of drugs, or chemotherapy, and these arenow being used in dogs. Future forms oftherapy may include attempts to stimulate theimmune system to destroy cancer cells.

Local Club Liaison, Michael Santora. Michael
Santora's report included his thanks for clarifica-tion of the ALAC Best of Winners plaque eligibilityto regional clubs for award at their specialtyshows.
Measurement Certification Program, NancyPlunkett. Nancy Plunkett's report had been re-ceived by the Board prior to the meeting. TheChairman expressed concerns regarding false
publication of a certified measurement and
false claims of certified measurements to a
judge. The Board recommended the list bepublished annually in the Yearbook. Also rec-
ommended, a check-box selection allowing
the dog's owner option to accept the measure-
ments, decline the measurements, agree to
publish, and decline to publish.
Membership Promotion, Ann Burton. Ad regard-
ing ALAC was placed in the Westminister cata-
log. There was some discussion about the effec-
tiveness of placing ads in the catalog of a show
as specialized as Westminister. Chairman Ann
Burton stated in her report that the summaryregarding the surveys sent to persons whose
memberships lapsed in 1993 was still pending.
She also asked to be advised of other areas to
advertise. Many board members felt high entry
shows such as Detroit KC, Western Reserve KC,
and Santa Barbara (?) would tend to reach
more Lhasa fanciers. Ray reminded the Boardthat advertising in regional specialty catalogs
as a show of support was one of the original
intents of the committee. Cindy recommended
the committee be allowed to continue to ad-vertise in other areas of the country, Steve will
contact Ann for her plan of action.

Timetable as it exists now:Feb 15 Nominating Committee chosenMar 31 General Members receive Nom .Com.'s report and
notice to send nominations from the floor alongwith the corresponding candidate profiles
May 1 Nominations from the floor closed (Sunday)
May 5 Ballots must be in the hands of members (30 daysprior to closing date)
June 5 Ballot deadline (10 days from annual meeting
where vote is announced)June 15 Annual meeting
Analysis: There is NO WAY the Secretary canhave 500 ballots AND candidate profiles com-piled, printed, stuffed, and in the hands of mem-
bers in 3 days after closing date. And the last dayFAXs will also add to the rush at the deadline.
Proposed election timetable for 1994:Feb 15'Mar 15'Apr 15'May 1

Jun 15
Nominating Committee chosenGeneral Membership receive Nom.Com.'s report(Fri) Closing date for nominations from the floor(Sun) Ballots and profiles in the hands of members.General members must have these in their posses-
sion for at least 30 days prior to ballot closing.
(Thu) Ballot closing date (in the hands of the ac-
countant). This date must be at least 10 days from
Annual meeting. This date gives us 13 days.
Vote results announced.
Recommended Adjustments:
• New timetable will allow appropriate window
to have printing proofread and mailing as-
sembled.
• All candidate profiles MUST BE no more than250 words. Reasons: 250 words is about 1/2
page. Many of the profiles last year were onewhole page. Costs to mail the ballot and corre-sponding info will be at least 52 cents per USletter (x500; 30 Canadian members and 40 for-
eign members additional). We need to con-
sider keeping printing and postal costs down.
• From now on, any profile over the 250 wordcount will be cut off at 250 words - wherever it
falls. Sorry. . . Camera ready copy is preferred(for the Secretary to avoid the job of retyping,
exposing the possibility of unintentional errors).
• Candidates sending nominations from thefloor without a profile will be contacted ONCEby phone PROVIDING THERE IS TIME. Last minuteFAXs wil not be contacted.
By-laws. An impromptu survey is being con-
ducted through the Bulletin asking the member-
ship their opinion on Directory term rotation (4
Directors elected for 2 years in alternate years
with the other 5 Directors) and limiting time of
service on the Board. The Board members are to
review the by-law revision except Article IV,
Section 3.
Ray moved and Richard seconded the meet-
ing be adjourned at 12:37 am. Motion passed.
Meeting adjourned.
Respectfully submitted,

FROM THE BULLETIN
• The Staff would like to limit Bulletin page copyto an area that is contained within 9" height and6.5" width. We would appreciate any camera-ready copy submitted be set to this format.Width of a single column, on double-columnmaterial, is 3-1/8". We do thank you for yourcooperation!
• A thought on show photographs. . . .Since your dog is the primary focus of an ad ,theBulletin tries to reduce a photo minimally, towhatever percentage, width to height, thatmaintains the dog at the largest possible sizeand still retains a fit to format. A photo taken withthe dog set up on the ground with the judgestanding, presents a problem. To accommo-date the judge's image, the photo requires agreater percentage of reduction and conse-quently a smaller final image of the dog than aphoto taken with everyone kneeling, or the dogset up on a table. Exhibitors might keep this inmind when their next showwin is photographed.
• Please don't forget to send along postage forreturn of advertising photos. Its pretty easy toinclude the same amount in stamps as you puton your photo mailing envelope. In this issue, only three advertisers remembered. Help!

ANIMAL LEGISLATION REPORT
FROM THE AMERICAN DOG OWNERS ASSOCIATION comes the July/August 1994 Report of three bills in the
103rd Congress of the United States which should be on the minds of all people involved in the dog fancy. The
bill numbers and a brief description of each follows:
HR 1423/SB 340: Presently the Federal Food and Drug Administration has a regulation which states that
drugs not specifically labeled for use on animals cannot be used to treat animals. Drugs labeled for use on dogs
are almost nonexistent. Since some drugs used on food animals—to fatten them or increase milk production—
cases of human sickness caused by these drugs has been noted. One of our Senators raised the question why
FDA was not enforcing this regulation. If this regulation was enforced, your veterinarians' hands would be tied
since most of the drugs used on your dog are for human consumption.
The passage of these bills would permit veteri-
narians to use drugs which are approved for human
use to treat your dogs.
These bills are important and should be sup-
ported by the entire fancy. Please write to your Sena-
tors and Representatives to seek their support for
these bills.
HR 3271: This bill is cited as the Federal Law
Enforcement Animal Protection Act.
This act would protect animals used by Federal
Law Enforcement Officers in patrolling the borders
and drug work. The criminal element has posted large
rewards for the killing of these animals. This bill would
provide for a fine and/or a five (5) year imprisonment
for such acts.
We support this bill and hope you will include
HR 3271 in your letter asking your Congressmen to
support its passage.
HR 2145: An amendment to Section 227 of the
Housing and Urban—Rural Recovery Act of 1983 to
prohibit owners and managers of federally assisted
rental housing from preventing elderly residents of
such housing from owning or having household pets.
We support this bill and again ask you to in-clude this bill number in your letter to your Congress-men.
We have an opportunity to accomplish a greatdeal with a small amount of effort at minimal cost. Letsflood the 103rd Congress with our letters. Please writetoday. . don't delay as we need support for these bills.
We are being bombarded with local breedmoratoriums and mandatory spay/neuter bills as wellas a resurgence in breed-specific proposals. Keepyour eyes and ears open for any such proposals inyour area. If you hear of anything, call your dogfriends, inform your kennel or breed club and let usknow. Lets work together to oppose detrimental leg-islation.
