From the Senior Pastor Dr. Edward Thompson, Senior Pastor, [email protected] 2
Dear Members and Friends, October is promising to be quite some month. Here at First Presbyterian there is so much happening that excites and stimulates our walk with God.
Take a look at Sunday mornings for a start. October 7 we celebrate World Communion Sunday and remind ourselves that we are part of the church of Christ throughout the world. Next, we move to October 14 when we celebrate the Sacrament of Baptism in our 9:30 a.m. service and when we launch our new worship event at 11:00 a.m. in the Chapel – Currents: Ancient Paths in New Waters!
October 21 we are “Swingin’ with the Saints” in a service of Jazz music and on October 28 we gather amidst the skirl of the pipes and the parade of the tartans. Quite a month when you add to this the ongoing Christian Education classes on Wednesday evenings, the beginning of Adult Sunday School, Presbyterian Women events and Men’s Huddle. Fall Festival will be celebrated on Friday evening, October 26, when our church grounds will be overrun with children and bounce houses, pony rides and painted
faces. Come join the fun.
October is a month when we hopefully feel less humidity and a month which draws us closer to the end of another hurricane season. I hope and pray it is a month which draws us into the holy happening of the Spirit of God. Other happenings this coming month will take the form of a new church bus! Let us rejoice and celebrate all these “happenings”, ever trusting in God’s grace and goodness to strengthen our faith in ways which shape us to be a community shaped by the love of Christ.
October is a month when the church staff will take some training on “social media skills.” So in the next month watch out, not only for our e-mail blasts, but also our Facebook updates and our “tweets”. We shall be inviting you to “open” our e-mail blasts, “like us” on Facebook and become “followers” on Twitter! What a world! All of these things may help but they will never replace the genuine personal invitation offered to a friend to come join with you in worship. We will grow the gospel, not by “tweeting” alone, but by living the gospel and extending an invitation to our
friends to come join us. I hope the variety of worship services throughout October will give you good reason and opportunity to do what we do best and extend a personal invitation. If need be you can borrow the church bus to bring them all to church! The apostle Paul writes in the first chapter of Romans, “I thank my God through Jesus Christ for all of you, because your faith is proclaimed throughout the world”, and a little later he goes on to write, “For I am not ashamed of the gospel; it is the power of God for salvation to everyone who has faith.” v 8 & 16. Let us be bold in our affirmation of faith, let us not be ashamed of the gospel, and let us in God’s power offer honest witness to the love of God who makes us new. “Lord of joy,
touch our dull eyes
that they may see beyond the obvious.
Touch our deafened ears,
that they may hear the still small voice.”

Ancient paths in new waters
Guess what’s missing? You are! Calling all people, from the youngest to the
oldest, from the shortest to the tallest, and everything in
between – you are now summoned to adventure in
Currents: Ancient Paths in New Waters!
It starts with the ancient stories of our faith. It’s preceded
by the people around us, calling for us to worship, and
proclaiming how wondrous God is. Then the ancient story
comes to life in new ways and is shaped in the sacrament
of communion. The story and sacrament in turn shape us.
The music will know no bounds other than what makes
our hearts and lungs sing. The moment will be fully
experienced and alive in God. Yes, this is Currents. Listen
for the Spirit to move you to it!
Why Currents? Why a new service?
Why no children’s Sunday School? Across the country, as our culture changes, dedication to
the work of Sunday School becomes less and less
common. This occurs for numerous reasons: some good,
some bad. Either way, we need to ask ourselves: What is
crucial? What’s essential in the faith? Is Sunday School
the only answer? Does it sometimes, in fact, hinder our
ability to meet our essential aims as the church?
So we’re left wondering, what is most important? It all
begins with worship. We must help our children and youth
stand in awe of God and to do so within the context of a
worshipping community. We need to teach the stories of
the faith, not just in an academic way, but in the context of
worship. We need to practice language of worship that
goes beyond words. And we need music that can bridge
our words to our hearts. In other words, we need to do
something different than taking our children away after 20
minutes of worship. We need to worship with them, to
guide them, to talk about holy moments in worship and to
be known, named, and integral to the larger body of Christ.
We need to meet our baptismal call to our children and
youth in a new way. So you are invited to this holy
experiment of worship. You are invited to venture into
new waters of faith. You are invited to Currents.
Our new musicians for Currents,
Rebecca Richardson and Dan Heck
Last year, Rebecca helped conduct our Jazz service,
turning classic hymns into creative Jazz melodies and
unique vocal qualities. That experience opened new
dimensions of worship for many in our community. So
naturally, when the service was in the early planning
stages, we asked her who she recommended for this new
service. She said, “How about me?” With that response,
we felt a collective, YES! Thank you God!
Rebecca is quite excited about this new adventure and we
also look forward to hearing her husband, Dan Heck, who
is a recording artist with more than impressive credentials.
Please pray for their work among us and pray that we open
ourselves collectively in new ways, into new currents of
the Spirit.

Iglesia Nacion Santa
Internacional It has now been just over a year that our
church has offered its facilities to the newly
budding Iglesia Nación Santa Internacional. Pastors Ramon and Loida Garcia are so
delighted to be here. They and their
congregation pray for us and join us when
they can. Let us pray for this ministry also, as
it continues to grow and mature in God’s
calling for them.
Join us for this special worship service, Swingin’
with the Saints featuring the musical talents of The
Rebecca Richardson Trio.
Hymns include Joyful, Joyful, We Adore Thee and
Immortal, Invisible, God Only Wise set in an
uplifting jazz style.
The chancel choir will join the trio for a gospel and
jazzy setting of Swing Low, Sweet Chariot and
When the Saints Come Marching In.
A Season of Music Opening Concert
Sunday, November 11, 2012, 4:00 p.m.
The concert season
opens with a bang!
Our Director of Music,
Brice Gerlach and his
wife, Michele Byrd
combine talents with
James, Cochran,
Director of Music at
Vanderbilt Presbyterian
Church for an exciting afternoon of keyboard and vocal
music. In addition to the magnificent Ruffatti pipe organ,
Brice and Jim will be playing a Rodgers digital organ as
well as a new Blüthner grand piano. The variety of sounds
this combination of instruments can produce is amazing.
It will be like an orchestra concert with only two keyboard
players. The program will include baroque gems, opera
classics, hymn arrangements, and some Broadway!
You won’t want to miss this special concert!

The fall season is upon us now and things are gearing up around
the church, but I thought I would share with you some of our
summer adventures. Our family travelled quite a bit throughout
the summer, and we had some amazing experiences!
Immediately after school was finished for Colin last June, we
decided to spend three days at
Disney World. It seemed like
a good idea when we booked
the trip, but the reality was
very different. I think that
everyone who had a school
aged child went to Disney the
same three days as we did. It
was so crowded and
unbearably hot! We managed
to have a good time, but I think
we’ll take our Disney trips
when the weather is cooler!
A few weeks later, we flew to
Colorado where Michele’s
family has a condo in Estes
Park. We always enjoy going
to the mountains and escaping
the Florida heat. This year we
had a family reunion and were joined by most of Michele’s
mother’s family which included her sisters, their children and
many grandchildren. We did take an interesting side trip to
Dinosaur National Monument in Vernal, Utah. Colin is very
interested in dinosaurs, and we all enjoyed going to a Natural
History Museum in Vernal as well as seeing the real dinosaur
bones inside the National Park. Colin even received his junior
paleontologist badge from a park ranger!
We were in Naples for much of July. Colin attended two weeks
of art camp at the Von Liebig and one week of Conservancy
camp. He really enjoys learning about various art techniques as
well as our Florida environment.
Our final trip of the summer was once again to Austria. This was
the fourth year
that Michele was
the soprano
soloist for the
Classical Music
Festival in
Eisenstadt. It
was a great trip
filled with
wonderful music.
The highlight of
the Festival was
our performance
of Franz Joseph
Haydn’s
masterpiece The
Creation. It is a
magnificent piece
filled with beautiful
musical imagery of
creation. From the
opening of the
work where the
wandering chords
in the orchestra
depict chaos, the
wonderful first
statement of the
chorus “and God
said, Let There Be
Light!”, to the descriptive musical setting of leaping tigers,
singing birds and crawling worms, Haydn’s writing is so creative
and always gives great pleasure to both the performer and the
listener. I know it will come as no surprise to anyone to hear that
Michele’s performance was spectacular! She had so many solos,
and they all were very challenging but one would never know it
by the ease with which she sings! This year the chorus, soloists
and orchestra were joined by the ballet studio from Oklahoma
University for a special choreographed performance of The
Creation. It was a great performance and the audience
responded with about 20 minutes of standing ovation!
Our other great musical experience was participating in church
services by singing the Mass in C by Ludwig van Beethoven in
two historic churches, St. Stephan’s Cathedral in Vienna and the
Bergkirche in Eisenstadt. The Bergkirche, or “Church on the
Hill” in Eisenstadt is where the mass would have first been sung
and the organ in that church is the same organ that Beethoven
played! It was a
great experience
for me as I
played that
organ to imagine
Beethoven
playing the
organ and
conducting the
orchestra in that
very church!
In addition to all
our music
making, we
managed to take
a two day side trip to Mozart’s city of Salzburg. We were very
excited to show Colin the sights – from Mozart’s house to the
Mirabell Gardens to the Festung Castle. He loved every minute
and would go back to Salzburg anytime!
It was great to be away and to travel but as they say “there’s no
place like home.” It’s good to be back with you, and I look
forward to all the great concert and worship experiences to come
in the year ahead.

moving on to Chapter 10. The 8:30 a.m. time will
continue until the church begins two services in
January 2013. For more information call Gretchen
Oakley at 239.591.3467.

begins on Thursday,
October 18.
All men are invited to
join our noon time
Bible study each
Thursday.
Bring your lunch and
join us in Spencer Hall
as often as possible.
Weekly attendance is
not mandatory. For more information on
HUDDLE, please contact Roger Miller at

As this year we place a special focus on I’d like to
recommend
a couple of Bibles that come with
helpful commentaries. The Renovaré Spiritual Formation Bible
not only pays attention to the contextual
details of the books of the bible but how
God forms relationships with humanity
through the ages.
I’d also like to recommend, for a more
academic approach, The Jewish
Annotated New
Testament which
provides fascinating
insights into the dynamics between
ancient Judaism and the writing of the
New Testament.

PAUL Dr. Edward Thompson
Dr. Edward
Thompson will
offer a class on
Paul’s First
Letter to the
Corinthians.
Paul was a
Hebrew of the
Hebrews and
also a Roman
citizen who
traveled the Mediterranean. These two rivers of influence
converge in his letter to the church in Corinth.
Over the five weeks the following themes will be
covered: Cross and Christian Unity, Kingdom and
Family Ethics, Freedom and Responsibility, Worship in
the Church, and Resurrection and Christ’s victory.
Let’s gather and learn together.
JOSHUA Rev. Jonathan Evans
Joshua turned back at
that time, and took
Hazor, and struck its king
down with the sword.
Before that time Hazor
was the head of all those
kingdoms.
And they put to the sword
all who were in it, utterly
destroying them; there
was no one left who
breathed, and he burned Hazor with fire. And all the
towns of those kings, and all their kings, Joshua took, and
struck them with the edge of the sword, utterly destroying
them… Joshua 11:10-11
What do you do with the grotesque violence of the bible,
particularly in the book of Joshua? How do we
understand this scripture as authoritative and binding as
the rule of life and faith for us?
You are invited to wrestle with these questions and the
book of Joshua through this course. If time permits, we
will delve into issues surrounding Jesus and violence.
A five week series of Wednesday Evening Dinner and Bible Study begins October 17.
Dinner 5:45 p.m. Class 6:30 p.m.
Please be sure to sign up for dinner and you are encouraged
to register for the class to help us be prepared.

First Presbyterian Preschool completed installation of a new
playground sun shade on Tuesday, September 4, 2012. And now we would like to
take this opportunity to extend our heartfelt gratitude to those that supported our efforts.
First Presbyterian Church and Preschool families and friends provided much needed support both
through donations and prayers. The FPC Facilities Committee helped to drive this
project and was in full support of the acquisition of the sun shade structure. Mike
Rutoski has worn many hats that include irrigation line repairman, sun shade
installer, city/permitting liaison, as well as many others and helped make sure the
project ran smoothly.
In addition to the spiritual support, families also supported the project through donations.
We would also like express our appreciation to the following families:

The Nominating Committee is asking all members to assist in the nomination process by submitting names of members to serve as deacons, sitting elders, and at-large Nominating
Committee members. You may use the attached form for this purpose. Remember to talk to those you nominate to be sure of their willingness to serve. Send the form to the committee in care of Sharman Pfaus in the office (see address on form below).
Service as an officer is vital to the work of the church, and it is also personally rewarding. In the case of the work of the deacons, it can never be said the deacons are all work and no play! Even in the midst of “work” the laughter and camaraderie of being together is a real joy. Would you like to be part of such a special and fun group of people that are such an integral part of our church life? Please consider serving as a deacon, an elder, a member of the Nominating Committee, or nominate someone who would be perfect for one of these vital positions! Nominating Committee members are Shirley Hagerson, Gene McCree, Joe Patton, Jerry Perkins, Betty Plum, Patty Rutzler (chair), and Corbin Wyant.

Dorothy Gomori has been a faithful and caring
visitor to my mother, Anita Van Kuren who now
lives at Arden Court, Lely Palms, where she is re-
ceiving the assistance she needs. When I was in
Naples in August, one of the first things Mom
told me about was Dorothy’s visits. God is using
Dorothy in a powerful way and our family is
deeply grateful. Thank you.

Session wishes to extend our advertising to the
Naples Daily News website. This would allow a
pop up ad to appear when people go the web to
read the paper. If people click this, it will take
them to the church website. The cost to is $500 a
month. Might you be able to sponsor this for a
month or a week? Let’s see if together we can
make this wish come true!
