How Do We Communicate in the 21st Century?

Dear Friends,

Whenever we do a survey parish survey (as we did last year for Making

All Things New, and by the Parish Council a few years before), a fre-

quently mentioned item of feedback is: “We need to improve commu-

nications.” Lately we have improved our parish website. We have tried

to make better, more efficient use of the parish bulletin and the end-of-

Mass announcements. We have established a Facebook page

(facebook.com/groups/OLGC.SI/), which now has nearly 250 members.

We are now ready to move into the next phase of efforts to improve

communications within the parish. This involves the use of a tool called

“Flocknote.” Flocknote uses a combination of e-mail and text messag-

ing to efficiently communicate information from the pastor (in the case

of the parish) or from the Cardinal (in the case of the arched diocese) to

our Catholics. (Continued on page 3)

¿Cómo nos comunicamos en el siglo 21?

Queridos amigos,

Cada vez que hacemos una encuesta, encuesta parroquial (como lo

hicimos el año pasado para Haciendo Nueva Todas las Cosas, y para el

Consejo Parroquial unos años atras), un elemento de retroalimentación

mencionado con frecuencia es: "Tenemos que mejorar la

comunicación." Últimamente hemos mejorado la página web de

nuestra parroquia. Hemos tratado de mejorar, hacer más eficiente el uso

del boletín de la parroquia y de los anuncios al final de la Misa. Hemos

establecido una página en Facebook (facebook.com/groups/OLGC.SI/),

que en la actualidad cuenta con cerca de 250 miembros.

Ahora estamos listos para pasar a la siguiente fase de los esfuerzos para

mejorar las comunicaciones dentro de la parroquia. Esto implica el uso

de una herramienta llamada "Flocknote." Flocknote utiliza una

combinación de correo electrónico y mensajes de texto para comunicar

de manera eficiente la información del pastor (en el caso de la

parroquia) o del cardenal (en el caso de la arqui diócesis) a nuestros

How Do We Communicate in the 21st Century? (Continued from page 1)

I was skeptical about this tool when I first heard about it. I

was not alone in this. Currently (Tuesday), I am attending the

annual pastors conference of the Archdiocese of New York.

Many of the other pastors here felt the same way. And some

members of our Parish Council and staff felt the same way

when I mentioned this tool at recent meetings. This morning I

met the young dedicated Catholic men from Texas who in-

vented this product and have been running it successfully for

thousands of parishes in the US and abroad. The tool is ex-

tremely versatile and user-friendly. Pastors and ministry lead-

ers can use it to send targeted messages to people in specific

ministries such as lectors, altar servers, choir members, etc. or

they can send a message to all reminding parishioners that the

next day is a holy day of obligation, or to remind people of a

Mass schedule change, etc.

Two of the fears that I have heard expressed most often are: 1)

that the Archdiocese might sell our contact information lists to

outside vendors, and 2) that the Archdiocese might use these e

-mail addresses and mobile phone numbers for the purpose of

soliciting contributions for various causes. Chancery leaders

assured us this morning that this will definitely not be the

case.

Communication needs to be a two-way street. One of the

beauties of Flocknote is that whether a parishioner receives a

Flocknote message through E-mail or text, that person has the

opportunity to respond to the sender instantly, without having

to access a special website. The user can easily opt out of any

ministry list or other list that he or she might be a member of.

Some of you may be contacted directly from the ArchNY

Flocknote team about signing up for the service. We will be

having sign up events here at the parish over the next few

weeks. Signing up will be very easy. I am very grateful to Mr.

Tom Mauro, a member of our parish council, who is coordi-

nating these efforts here at OLGC.

As you know, the Archdiocese is gearing up to make some

very important announcements about the consolidation and

closing of some parishes. Cardinal Dolan wants to get accu-

rate information directly to you using Flocknote, rather then

relying on media sources that are often geared toward the sen-

sational.

I look forward to working with all of you with this new tool to

continue improving communications among our parish mem-

bers. I believe that we can use Flocknote and other tools to

help each other to grow in our faith and to spread the Gospel

of the Kingdom of God’s love.

Yo estaba escéptico acerca de esta herramienta, cuando escuché

sobre ella por primera vez . Yo no era el único. Actualmente

(Martes), estoy asistiendo a la conferencia anual de pastores de la

Arquidiócesis de Nueva York. Muchos de los otros pastores aquí

se sentían de la misma manera. Y algunos miembros de nuestro

Consejo Parroquial y personal de la parroquia se sintieron de la

misma manera cuando les mencioné acerca de esta herramienta en

las últimas reuniones. Esta mañana conocí a los jóvenes dedicados

católicos de Tejas que inventaron este producto y lo han hecho

funcionar con éxito para miles de parroquias en los EE.UU. y en el

extranjero. La herramienta es muy versátil y fácil de usar. Los

pastores y líderes ministeriales pueden utilizarlo para enviar

mensajes dirigidos a personas en ministerios específicos como

lectores, monaguillos, miembros del coro, etc., o pueden enviar un

mensaje a todos los feligreses para recordarles que el día siguiente

es un día de precepto, o para recordar a la gente de un cambio de

horario de Misas, etc.

Dos de los temores que he oído expresar con mayor frecuencia

son: 1) que la Arquidiócesis podría vender nuestras listas de

información de contacto a proveedores externos, y 2) que la

Arquidiócesis podría utilizar estas direcciones de correo

electrónico y números de teléfono móvil con el propósito de

solicitar contribuciones para diversas causas. Los líderes de la

Cancillería nos aseguraron esta mañana que esto definitivamente

no será el caso.

La comunicación tiene que ser una calle de dos vías. Una de las

divinidades de Flocknote es que si un feligrés recibe un mensaje

Flocknote a través del correo electrónico o de texto, esa persona

tiene la oportunidad de responder al remitente de inmediato, sin

tener que acceder a una página web especial. El usuario puede

fácilmente optar salirse de cualquier lista de ministerio u otra lista

de la que él o ella pueda ser un miembro.

Algunos de ustedes podrían ser contactados directamente desde el

equipo de ArchNY Flocknote acerca de la suscripción a este

servicio. Vamos a tener eventos de suscripción aquí en la

parroquia en las próximas semanas. La inscripción será muy fácil.

Estoy muy agradecido con el Sr. Tom Mauro, miembro de nuestro

consejo parroquial, quien está coordinando estos esfuerzos aquí en

OLGC.

Como usted sabe, la Arquidiócesis se está preparando para hacer

algunos anuncios muy importantes acerca de la consolidación y el
