Lincoln Christmas MarketSaturday 9th December 2017

It has been a busy time for theCraft Club

We have Suzanne Gee to thank for teaching some members thevintage art of ldquotatting (lace making)rdquoSuzanne showed an enormous amount ofpatience with the less dexterousattendees but we got there in the end

In May we went to The Paper Haven inFarsley and created a beautiful papercovered picture frame and stampedsentiment to go inside We have 3 more ofthese events and they are popular if you areinterested in attending the next one on 26th

It was a rather overcast day the day afterthe heat wave so it caught us all out weather wiseThere was an opportunity to visit Poolersquos Cavern whichsounded great but we opted for Buxton instead OnceBuxton was hoped to be lsquothe Bath of the Northrsquo butthis didnrsquot quite take off Nevertheless it led to somesurprisingly interesting architecture and magnificentbaths I visited the museum which contained someoddities like a mermaid actually a monkey and a fishsewn together to create a homunculus There was anexhibition by a London artist called Malcolm Ryan - aseries of dreamy portrayals dominated by light Thiswas an unexpected bonus I discovered the GreenMan studios a space for local artists to display theirwares After some excellent peanut butter cake Ifound a very eccentric bookshop called ScrivenersThis was found on the corner of a street and had 5floors of books spiraling neverendedly There was aplace in the middle where one could make tea orcoffee There were several interesting tomes to be hadand it had received a recommendation from StuartMaconie The rain eventually cleared and after somerefreshment I was glad to find the coach

We stayed at the Grand Western hotel in the verycentre of Derby It was rather hot but next to it weresome old railway workers houses a mysterious edificeopposite and some old fashioned pubs selling a vastarray of craft beers I donrsquot normally imbibe suchdrinks but under peer pressure agreed to Firstly visitedthe Brunswick and enjoyed Hop house ale These wereold fashioned drinkers

After 1 other pub we walked into Derby centre whichis pleasant and less busy than Leeds which came as arelief We visited Jorrocks where old rock musicdominated ndash The Clash The Cure The Cult etc Thenby sheer chance discovered Ye Old Dolphin datingback to 1530 and again populated with a multiplicityof ales crafted beers

SATURDAY 24TH JUNEThere was a large party of current and ex Civil servantsstaying at the hotel and the breakfast was prettygood included kippers and crepes should one feel theneed The trip today was to Bakewell a picturesqueDerby shire village famed for its pudding or is that tartWe were left undecided They were having a day ofdance in the village included African romany swingand Morris dancing which some find off putting yet Ienjoyed its simplicity It is good to see English traditionscontinuing I bought some bakewell tarts and somebees rock from the farmers market The afternoon wasspent at Thornbridge brewery where there was winetasting accompanied by cheese and biscuits Thenthere was beer tasting and a tour of the brewery plussmelling of hops yeast etc The more boozily inclinedseemed to like this ritual By this time the crew were infine spirits as we returned to a sunny Derby In theevening we went out again to the Victoria a stylishvery old pub Years ago many famous bands playedhere but now itrsquos a popular wedding venue as was theAlexandra we went to later

SUNDAY 25TH JUNEAwoke to sunshine and another fortifying breakfastwhich was a bit late It was then onto Barton marina amysterious locale in the middle of the Staffordshirecountryside There was an artisan market and then adelightful Cinema and Cafe Bar ndash a cinematicallythemed cafeacute called The Red Carpet This was a funfilled relaxing weekend and the gang all enjoyed thequiz on the journey home

The following terms and conditions will apply to all events to ensure that every member has a fair opportunity toparticipate in events The terms and conditions should be read in conjunction with the relevant booking form

1 Wherever possible events will be advertised with a closing date for applications that is at least 4 weeks from the datefirst advertised including proposed events where expressions of interest are being requested

2 Persons wishing to travel together should complete one application form per room submit their applications togetherand determine a lead person who will be responsible for forwarding payments due and act as the contact on behalf of thegroup via a signed disclaimer agreeing to these terms and conditions

3 A booking will not be accepted or entered in a draw without the correct deposit and signed disclaimer

4 Once the closing date is reached the number of applicants wishing to travel will be determined Where there aresufficient places for all applicants then deposit cheques will be banked and places confirmed

5 Members should be aware that once deposit cheques have been banked they are not returnable and travellers will beliable to pay full price of the trip (unless the place is subsequently filled) Full price means the un discounted nonshymember price Where necessary HASSRA (Leeds) will provide an invoice for the full price for insurance purposes buttravellers need to be aware that the cost of insurance (if purchased) is non-refundable

6 Travel operators will be asked to date insurance cover from the date on which they receive notification of the personstravelling It is therefore essential to obtain adequate travel insurance before booking if you do not purchase theinsurance offered

7 Single supplements There will be no member discount on supplements for travellers wishing to secure a singleroom Where members indicate on the application form that they are willing to share a room with someone of the samesex the organiser will arrange for pairing If an individual has indicated that they are willing to share they will not have topay a single supplement even if no pair is available

8 Where the number of applicants exceeds the places available a random draw of application forms will determinethose successful in receiving a place subject to Clause 8 Cheques accompanying these applications will then beprocessed Remaining applications will continue to be drawn at random to determine the order of the reserve list

9 The trip organiser will be granted up to two places on that trip without entry into the ballot An organiser is the personwho arranges the trip on behalf of the HASSRA Events Committee whether or not she is a member of the Committee

10 Where expressions of interest have been sought for a proposed trip if that trip is subsequently confirmedapplications received from those expressing interest prior to the closing date will be given priority to book before anyunfilled places on the trip are advertised On these occasions once the closing date is reached remaining places will befilled on a first come first served basis

11 Members who have been unsuccessful in a ballot for a trip may record this on their application for the next trip to thesame destination and will be given priority for available spaces

12 Applications from solely non-member groups ie not accompanying a full HASSRA member wishing to participate inan event will be considered only in the event of places remaining after the closing date has passed

13 The priority order will be a) Organiser +1 b) Previously unsuccessful on similar trip (ballot if necessary) c) Priorregistered interest (ballot if necessary) d) Other Members e) Non Member groups

14 Non-members may apply to travel at the discounted rate on an event provided that they satisfy the criterion forassociate membership and send a completed application for membership together with the appropriate payment on orbefore the closing date for the trip Associate Membership will last for 12 months from the date of processing theapplication The Committee reserves the right to determine specific criteria for prior membership on certain trips Anysuch requirements will be notified in the advertisement Participants are reminded to conduct themselves in anappropriate manner while attending HASSRA sponsored trips and events Formal complaints may prejudice anindividuals eligibility for future trips
