The semi-annual Friends Book Sale will take place October 21-26 during the

normal Bookstore hours. The sale will be $5.00 per bag of books, CD’s, tapes,

etc. We will provide the bags for this sale. All other promotional offers

including the frequent buyer program will be suspended during this sale.

Our Library Renovation Campaign is now underway. To date we have begun

talking with businesses and civic groups. We thank Frank Cirillo and The

Home Store Real Estate (Joe Criscuolo) for their generous donations.

More information will be available in the coming months regarding

contributions from individuals. If you wish information immediately please

Save the dates: February 9, 2020We will hold the “I Love my Library Dinner”.This event will be held at a new location and feature a new,expanded menu! More information will be available nextmonth. May 15-16, 2020: The annual mini-golf event.

The friends are selling coupons for a special sales day at Boscov's. the sale takes place on Wednesday,

October 16th and gives you 25 % off most items in the store on that day. Coupons are $5.00 and the

entire amount goes to the Friends of the Meriden Public Library. Coupons are available at the

information desk in the library or in our Bookstore.

Do you enjoy knitting or crochet? Are you

a novice or an expert? Need help with a

pattern or just want to chat with others

who enjoy the same craft? Come to the

Needles and Hooks Group at the Library.

They meet monthly on a Wednesday

morning. The next meetings will be held on

Oct. 2nd, Oct. 16th and Oct. 30th at 10 am

to noon. The group always welcomes

donations of yarn.

The Meriden Poetry Society will meet on

Saturday, Ocr. 5th at 9:30 am and on

Wednesday, Ocr. 16 at 1:30 pm. All who are

interested in writing and/or reading poetry

are welcome to attend.

Do you enjoy playing Scrabble? Stop into

the Library on Monday, Oct. 7 at 2:00 pm

and play a game or two.

Boards are provided, but you are welcome

to bring your own.

Writer's NetworkAre you writing a book or interested in

writing? Join the Writer’s Network at the

Meriden Public Library. They meet monthly

on a Tuesday evening. The September meeting

will be held on Tuesday, October 22nd from

7:00 to 8:00 pm. Come discuss writing, get

encouragement and help others with their

writing.

Need to renew or get a new passport? Stop

into the Meriden Public Library and

bypass that line at the Post Office. The

Post Office holds a passport application

service at the library each month from 10

am to 2 pm and will hold the next one on

Saturday, October 19th.

Deserts, Mountains, and Joshua Trees

October 30th at 1pm Griffin Room

Eight National Parks in Arizona, California,

and Nevada are visited showing snow-capped

mountains, red mountains, and deserts in

bloom. The story of the Hoover Dam and its

construction is also on the agenda. The visual

aspects to this talk will be magnificent.

The Connecticut Civilian ConservationCamps: History, Memories,and Legacy

October 8th at 1pm Cook Room

Under President Roosevelt's New Deal, the CCC

began on March 31, 1933 to relieve the poverty

and unemployment of the Depression. There

were 21 such camps set up throughout

Connecticut to build trails and roads, to stock

fish, to maintain fire towers and telephone lines,

and other constructive tasks.

A Different Kind of War Hero,Vietnam 1968My Lai Massacre was the mass shooting of

unarmed men, women, and children by US

ground troops in Vietnam, March 1968. This

is the story of the pilot and two crewmen who

intervened on behalf of the innocent civilians,

and how their heroic actions were suppressed

for years.

amazing tides and beautiful formations. This

presentation will give a glimpse of its rich

geological and maritime history.

humor in her well-known "Cathy" comic

strip. Her collection of essays deals with

cry, reflect, and most of all, appreciate living!

Beyond the Bicep: The RealStory of Rosie the RiveterHere, we are told the real story of Rosie the

Riveter! We will trace her journey from the

propaganda poster to feminist icon, while

uncovering the real-life Rosies and their work

in wartime industries during WWII.
