So, as Knightdale Baptist Church you have very specific tasks from now through next Fall. Along with your regular Worship, Teaching, Ministering, and Faith Community building come two other tasks. You will be saying “Goodbye” to one pastor and “Welcome” to another. It is very important that a church family do good closure with an exiting pastor, even an interim pastor. It is critical that the field be left wide open for honoring the position of the next leader. Ideally, a pastor should not be carrying with him or her any unresolved conflicts or pain received during his ministry. Even more important, no church person should be left behind with the same. Someone always says, “Hey, don’t make a big deal out of these things. Just shake hands and wish each other well.” Actually, the buildup of mismanaged painful experiences with each other is the most problematic issue in churches. And I guarantee you that that there are some. When people rub elbows in an emotional system such as a church hurts happen and most go unresolved. Unfortunately, they do not have a half-life they must be resolved or will continue to work. So, I pray that you and I will work to be sure that none remain after I leave. I know this stuff because I am old and had lots of personal experience. Once I was interim pastor of a small church which I had known for years. There was a wonderfully wise elderly man whom I admired greatly. I worked with him to think about the power structure of that church. It was a tough job and I became impatient. We finished the interim tasks and I left. Several years later I went back to help the church again. On Wednesday evening we were studying the scriptures and praying about the conflict in the congregation. We were talking about the importance of forgiveness. Jesus’ words about the importance of forgiveness are recorded in Matthew 5:21- 26 under the heading of “Murder.” He said, “Therefore, if you are offering your gift at the altar and there remember that your brother has something against you, leave your gift there in front of the altar. First go and be reconciled to your brother, then come and offer your gift.” As long as you are at odds with your brother, you are at odds with God. It started with us reading Ephesians 4:3. My brother said, “Since you have opened the door, I need to say something.” He proceeded to recite an event which had occurred years before and laid in his heart since then. I had visited in his home many times since then and was the minister at the funeral of his wife at her request and with his blessing. Just one last comment. Obviously, it is hard to do this and just because you try doesn’t mean you will succeed every time. I will take the initiative in things I know about. Others must take the initiate in which I do not know about. God bless everyone! See you Sunday. ― Charles Dorman a monthly newsletter of a monthly newsletter of a monthly newsletter of a monthly newsletter of Knightdale Baptist Church Knightdale Baptist Church Knightdale Baptist Church Knightdale Baptist Church October, 2011 Volume 8, Issue 10

In The Interim Goodbyes

It is time for us to begin saying goodbye. I came to be your interim pastor Spring as of a year ago. You can figure it out. Sometime between now and the first of the year I will probably be gone. In a few weeks after that a new pastor will arrive and you will begin the process of letting him be your pastor. 21st Annual YAM JAM

Saturday, October 15th 2011 8 am - 1:30 pm

Q: What’s the Yam Jam?

A: The Yam Jam is an event brought to you by the Society of St. Andrew, America’s Gleaning Network. Hundreds of volunteers meet at a sweet potato field to collect the food that cannot be sold but is still edible. We bag it into ten-pound bags, load it into cars, pick-up trucks and delivery trucks, and send it out to people in need in the Triangle and beyond! In 2010, with the help of over 800 volunteers, we collected over 84,000 pounds of sweet potatoes and sent it to over 30 emergency food relief agencies and non-profits around the Triangle. Q: Where is it?

A: We will know the exact location of the field the week of the event, but the general location is near the community of Four Oaks in Johnston County. Q: What should I bring? A: You should bring water, gloves, and food for yourself and your group. We will provide the bags to collect the sweet potatoes.

Q: What else do I need to know? • You need to know that there are NO BATHROOMS in the middle of a farm field, so plan a pit stop beforehand.

• Kids are permitted to volunteer but they must be supervised by an adult. • If you want, you can deliver sweet potatoes with your car or pick-up truck, just let us know!

Rev. Jeff Roberts will be our guest speaker. He was KBC’s interim pastor from 2004-2005. From

KBC he went to New Bethel Baptist until they were ready to call a new pastor. From there he
