COMMENTS FROM
THE PRINCIPAL I want to say THANK
YOU to the Sargent community
for your support! Getting the
school year started keeps things
busy, but with the support from
many of you I believe this year is
off to a good start.
Our staff, students, and teams/
groups are very active: The FFA
has been working hard on range
judging and, with the help of
several community members, Mr.
Kozeal successfully hosted the
district range judging contest
again this year. The FFA will
compete at the area and state
contests as well, but hosting dis-
tricts allowed more of our stu-
dents to participate and many of
our students/teams finished at the
top of their division. FBLA just
attended their fall Leadership
Conference and have been busy
behind the scenes setting up
fundraisers and helping with pro-
jects around the school and com-
munity. The Cross Country team
has been doing well with several
placing individually and has
grown allowing the girls to score
as a team. The Football team is
undefeated and focused on a
strong regular season finish and a
trip back to the playoffs. The
Twin Loup Volleyball team is
slowly gaining momentum and
you will have several chances to
watch them as we will be hosing
several games in the end of Sep-
tember and October.
Our academic programs also
show results that we can be
proud of. I also want to com-
mend last year’s seniors as the
Sargent School District’s aver-
age ACT scores above both the
National and State average for
the second year in a row!
.Results from last Nebraska State
Assessment for 3rd-8th graders
hasn’t been released, but with
changes in the test scores are not
going to be as high. I will post
results when that data is made
available for public release.
With students walking around
with more computing power on
their phone than we had in the
entire school 30 years ago inter-
ests and tools have changed.
That is why staff continues to
work on implementing technolo-
gy into their classes through
google, schoology, and several
other programs. With society
using more technology the
school is also adjusting commu-
nications with Facebook and
Twitter posts, as well as parents
being able to follow what is go-
ing on by using Schoology and
Powerschool to monitor their
child’s classes and grades. If
you have questions about setting
up parent accounts contact Mr.
Grint at the school or talk to staff
about it at Parent Teacher Con-
ferences on Tuesday, October
11th. As I wrap this up I’d like
to take a moment to encourage
our parents to be aware of their
child’s attendance. You can
check their attendance on Pow-
erSchool or by contacting the
school. Organization and plan-
ning are an important part of
school success, as well as fu-
ture success. Parents and
teachers need to work together
to assure that our students de-
velop good habits and a sense
of responsibility toward their
commitments.
In closing I’d like to say
THANK YOU again for your
support of the school, staff,
students, and our programs.

then start adding pictures to your cart. Picture galleries can
be browsed by activity/event, in hopes of making your
search quicker and easier.
ll proceeds go back to the yearbook class to help keep our
equipment updated to better serve you.
If you have any questions, please contact Mrs. Tobias.
School pictures will be on Thursday, September 28th, starting at 8:00am. Packets have been sent home with your child(ren). Should you need an extra order form, contact the office.
• Every student will be photographed for the yearbook, whether you are, or are not purchasing pictures. Please remember that it is YOUR responsibility to dress nicely, and have your hair combed the way you would like it to be. The photographer will only do free retakes if it is something that she did wrong. • If you are wanting a class picture, please order it on your individual picture envelope. Class pictures ordered at a later date, will incur an “after event” fee. • Please read your order form thoroughly, the most common mistake is ordering only an option. YOU MUST ORDER A PACKAGE BEFORE YOU MAY ORDER THE DISCOUNTED OPTIONS. If you are wanting your child to wear a hat, there needs to be a note with your request, otherwise your child will not be allowed to
wear it for the picture.
• We are looking forward to working with the Sargent Schools again this year!
If you have any additional questions, please contact Mrs. Tobias.
Dear Parents and Families:
Reading for pleasure unlocks the power of information and imagination and helps children discover who they are.
Here’s what you can do to help children develop stronger reading skills and a love
for reading:
Set the example. Let children see you read.
Have a collection of books in your home. Update this collection routinely to keep up
with changing tastes and reading skills.
Support our school’s Book Fair. Allow your children to choose their own books
to read.
Our Scholastic Book Fair is a reading event that brings the books kids want to read right into our school. It’s a won-
derful selection of engaging and affordable books for every reading level. Please make plans to visit our Book Fair
and be involved in shaping your child’s reading habits.
Book Fair dates: October 9-13
Shopping hours: 1/2 hour before and after school - And During Parent/Teacher Confer-ence
Special activities: Check out our ALL FOR BOOKS DRIVE!
If you are unable to attend the Fair in person, we invite you to visit our online Book Fair at scholastic.com/fair. Our
Online Fair is available from October 4th to 17th
We look forward to seeing you and your family at our Book Fair! Remember, all purchases benefit our school.
Sincerely,
Mrs. Kina Stefka
Library/Media Specialist
Notes from the Nurse
When sending snacks to share with your student’s class, please check with the teacher about student allergies. We have some students with severe food allergies and may need a list of ingredients for all snacks and drinks (homemade or store bought) before they can be passed out to the students in the classroom. Thank you! Kristin Slagle, School Nurse
Please save your Big G Box tops !
Each box top is worth 10¢ when redeemed through the school. Drop off your box
tops in the office or give them to any elementary student. We will make a sub-
mission in October. The last submission netted over $500. Thank you for your
help!
We send a special thanks to a busy volunteer for clipping, sorting
and counting the box tops! Juanita Beran, thank you so much!
All students in first grade through twelfth grade at Sargent Public School currently participate in
the Accelerated Reader program which is designed to identify the students’ reading levels, allow
them to take quizzes over books that they have read and record the results of those quizzes. This
information assists the teachers in monitoring each student’s progress by allowing them to make
assessments and guide each student’s reading.
Accelerated Reader’s Renaissance Home Connect is available to bring some of this same infor-
mation to the parent. Home Connect can be viewed from any computer with Internet connec-
tion. By logging into this website, parents can see what quizzes are available, the quizzes their stu-
dent has taken, and how well their child scored on those quizzes. Parent can also sign up to re-
ceive an email each time their student takes an Accelerated Reader quiz.
Any parent that is interested in obtaining Home Connect can contact Mrs. Stefka at the school to
receive instructions on how to access this information. She can be reached at 527-4119 or ki-

Music Notes from the Classroom
Welcome to a new music schedule! This year the 7-12 Band and Choir students
are working with a new time frame. The band students start at 7:45 and practice until
8:15 in the Loup County music room. Then at 8:15 the frizzy haired music teacher
moves to the stage where she works from 8:15 until 8:45 with the choir students. This
happens every day! This means that the traveling band students have to be on a bus
headed to the host school at 7:30 in the morning.
That is the bad news. The great news is that the band practice time has in-
creased 60 minutes a week and the choir has gained 90 minutes a week. The in-
creased practice time has already paid off for the choir. By the end of the second full
week of choir we could perform a song complete with harmony parts while only the
accompaniment was played. That is a major wow factor for us.
The choir will need all the extra time as the 9th through 12th grade singers travel
to Litchfield on October 23rd for the MNAC vocal clinic. This is a fairly close loca-
tion, so if you have time in the late afternoon, feel free to drive over and hear the
concert that the students present at the end of the day. More information will be
coming home to parents when it is available.
CAN, CAN YOU PLAY THE CAN CAN?
Parents are always accusing their children of playing “Trashy Music”. Well we
are proud of that fact in the elementary. We are recycling trash for music in-
struments. The school cooks have been graciously saving me all their large cans
that once contained things such as veggies, fruits, and sauces. The older stu-
dents decorated the cans and created a versatile drum. Not only does it have a
great surface on the bottom….. er I mean the top….. but the side ridges have a
sound of their own. With the help of a resource called Kid Stix, students are
learning how to read rhythm patterns and have fun with a recycling project.
There are accompanying music tracks to make the experience even more fun.
And why do I ask if you Can, Can the Can, Can? The first experience was to a
rousing version of Offenbachs’ famous song…. Can Can #4.

The Sargent Elementary students would like to encourage you to put your receipts in the Sargent
Schools box at the Grocery store. Proceeds from the Corner Market receipt program will go to
purchasing classroom supplies, technology, etc. If you are not familiar with the program there is
a box at the end of the checkout lane where you can leave your grocery receipts or you can send
them to school with any elementary student. Thank you for your help.

FBLA News
The FBLA chapter has had a busy start to the school year. We started out the month with an of-
ficer meeting on August 15th, discussing and planning out the 2017-2018 school year. On Friday,
July 7th, FBLA members Tristian Oxford,
Bailey Schneider, Kalayah Ironshell, Shawn
Quandt, and Andrea Maldonado helped
serve food at the Celebrate Sargent Cham-
ber Banquet at the community center. On
September 19, we had our first meeting of the year. A new officer
team that was installed at our May banquet presided over this meeting. The officer team includes
Corri Slagle-President, Bella Kissell-Vice President, Bridget Slagle-Secretary, Carly Kozeal-
Treasurer, Kalayah Ironshell-Reporter, Tristian Oxford- Parliamentarian, and Bailey Schneider-
Historian . So far, we have 21 new members.
The officers will be attending the Fall Leadership Conference in Kearney held on September 26th.
They will attend breakout sessions to learn more about their office, discuss fundraising ideas, and
how to get involved in national projects.
The Wolf Den is open again this year and we have designed and ordered some new items based
on requests from our customers. The items include: adjustable hats, tie dye volleyball t-shirts,
blankets, and jackets. If you have any requests for new items in the Wolf Den, don’t be afraid to
share your ideas with us! We are excited about the new items and hope you all come in to check
them out. The Wolf Den is open at home games and can be opened by request.
As a whole, the FBLA has had a productive and exciting start to the year, and we thank you for
your continued support. It would not be possible without the supportive community that we
have. Thank You!

School is in Session So Please Drive Carefully
Every fall, over 55 million U.S. children head back to school. In Sargent we have over 25% of our students that typically walk or bike to school. It's important for drivers to be extra vigilant for pedestrians before and after school hours. Afternoons are particularly dangerous; over the last decade, more than one-fourth of child pedestrian fatalities occurred between 3 p.m. and 7 p.m. Here's what you can do to help to keep kids safe: Slow down. Speed limits in school zones are reduced for a reason. A
pedestrian struck by a vehicle traveling at 25 mph is nearly two-thirds less likely to be killed compared to a pedestrian struck by a vehicle traveling just 10 mph faster. Come to a complete stop. Research shows that more than one-third of drivers roll through stop signs in school zones or neighborhoods. Always come to a complete stop, checking carefully for children on sidewalks and in crosswalks before proceeding. Eliminate distractions. Children can be quick, crossing the road unex-pectedly or emerging suddenly between two parked cars. Taking your eyes off the road for just two seconds doubles your chances of crashing. Reduce this risk by not using your cell phone or eating while driving. Watch for bicycles. Children on bikes are often inexperienced, unsteady and unpredictable. Slow down and allow at least three feet of passing dis-tance between your vehicle and a bicyclist.
Remember – a little extra time and attention can save lives.
