Glenn West has delighted many with his unusual, intricate and beauti-
ful designs for over thirty years, with markets in New York, Chicago, and Los
Angeles.
Glenn received his training in the Southwest where he practiced original, award winning beadwork
and silver-smithing based on both a contemporary aeshteic and world or indigenous cultures.
Today he resides in Poulsbo, Washington, where he has been designing distinctive jewelry
using silver, gold and semiprecious stones. Part of his current body of work includes a contempo-
rary interpretation of Northwest Native American Art, which can at times be both whimsical and
traditional.
Glenn teaches both introductory and advanced classes in silver smithing. You can call for
details at 360-779-8675.

From the President…
Hi—I hope you are all doing well and are getting a piece of art ready
for our PAL Fall Show at TCC—all the information regarding that show and
the upcoming screening is arriving with this newsletter. If you don‘t have
something ready yet, get busy! Let‘s put on a great show with art from a
good representation of our members.
I was hoping to give you exciting news about plans for a new Cul-
tural Arts Campus in Gig Harbor in this column. I am still sharing hopes
and dreams—I just don‘t know what is going to happen in the current fi-
nancial climate. Meetings are being held to discuss needs and plans for a
building in Gig Harbor, in the area of the new Historical Museum, which
would be of great benefit to performing arts, musical groups, and art
groups such as ours. The structure could also be used to bring important artists into Gig Harbor
for performances and to house conventions and important events bringing revenue to the city and to
local businesses. This is an important dream and it can be a reality—the City of Gig Harbor is con-
sidering their role in supporting and contributing to the project. I think it is important to think be-
yond today and to plan ahead for the future of our community. Gig Harbor needs an art center - the
arts are the life of our community and they have a far reaching effect on so many aspects of our lives.
The PAL Building Committee will keep working on this and will report back as things progress.
Please plan on attending our PAL Show Reception on November 7, at TCC. We will gather at
6:30 with awards at 7:00 p.m. There will be refreshments and a chance to visit with old and new
friends and see the art - always a good variety and of high quality. Our Juror for this show will be
Marit Berg, art instructor at TCC. Thanks to Rhene Johns for taking time out of her busy life to or-
ganize our Fall Show and to the people who are assisting her.
Well—see you at the meeting and then at the show!

Robin Peterson was interviewed and filmed for the ―My Home Town‖ show
to air November 1, nightly except Sundays (time unknown) on Comcast
Channel 76. Several PAL members have been featured and it should be fun
to see this overview of the many good things happening on the Key Peninsula!
Robin Peterson‘s ―Summer Harvest‖ is hanging with the
current show at the Kimball Gallery/Coffee Shop.
The Featured Artist this month at the Kimball Gal-
lery is Dianne Gardner.
I'm leading a direct stone sculpture workshop at the Lakewold Gardens from
November 13-16, 2008. The program is accredited for undergraduate, graduate and
professional development credits for teachers. It also provides the opportunity for
2D artists to add a stone sculpture to their body of work. The materials/tools are
provided and we still have a few spaces left. We're hoping to get the word out
concerning the workshop…is it possible to post the press release in some fashion
for your membership.
Best Regards,

From George Milliken—I was one of the 60 watercol-orists chosen for the Northwest Watercolor Society's Waterworks 2008 show in Oct-Dec.
The show will be at the New Dimensions Gallery , 206 105th Ave NE Bellevue . It opens October 28th and closes December 6TH
From Marti Green—I’m selling some frames - they are mostly standard gold frames ranging from $3.00 to $10.00. I have a big box of them and it includes the corner hardware. Wire and hangers not included. If some people are interested, they can email me, and then I can bring them to this next meeting. [email protected]
I’m also doing Giclee prints for watercolors only at 12 cents a square inch with a small setup fee that includes imaging and proofing. I use 140lb watercolor paper and use a 17 X 30 precut paper. Orders must be enough to fill a 17X30 paper including white boarders. They can print one large or two, three smaller ones. Sep up is time consuming so I do need some advance notice.
Robin Peterson and Pat Rush both have their books for sale online—the general link is www.blurb.com from their main page you can access the "bookstore" in the search win-dow type in Robin‘s name or Pat's name (Patricia Rush- doesn't work as Pat) and our books will show up. Robin has 3 and Pat has 4. The direct link is Robin's http://www.blurb.com/bookstore/searchsearch=robin+peterson&commit=Search
Congratulations! Chris Bronstad re-ceived a 1st place in the drawing cate-gory at the Puyallup Fair show. There is a great article about Chris on page 24 of the Key Peninsula News at: www.keypennews.com

To celebrate the annual Buffalo Feed held every August at the Gig Harbor Eagles, Jeanne Crider designed and created the above mural. It was worked on by her and her assistants Peggy Fraychinaud, Jesse Hicks, and Jeanne‘s sister, LaVonne Smith. The piece was cut into a tryptic after it was painted to make it easier to handle. The piece is 14.5 feet long and 5 feet high and remains on display at the Eagle‘s Hall.
Beverly Hanson, who is a recent addition to the PAL group and the recipient of PAL's Best of Show Award for the Open Regional show, has just won another award. She received a Special Award in the photography division in the Expressions Northwest Juried Art Show at the Northwind Arts Center in Port Town-send for her picture entitled: "Haunted Branches in an Oak Reserve".

From Carol Valstyn, Summer Art Festival Chair:
Next year is our 25th art festival year and I hope we really have something to celebrate. That‘s the reason that I wanted to continue to take on that responsibility. However, 2009 will be my 5th year, and I think it‘s time to get someone else to take it over.
Virginia helped me a great deal this year and will continue to do so in 2009, but she is unable to take over the festival. Starting in December, I would like someone to work closely with me so that he or she can learn first hand what goes into the organization of it. Many things are much easier now because, working with Charlee Jackson, we have transferred much of the paperwork onto our web site. In the future, it will only need to be updated.
I am hoping to find someone who is familiar with Excel so they can keep our database current. If not, I can teach them how to manage it. I also need a person who is organized and can handle an occasionally stressful situation.
I also need a person to take Jon Lonning‘s place because he has decided not to do the festival next year. This person would have to arrange to get festival supplies in and out of storage and be there during the festival to help out wherever needed.
I love doing the festival, but it does take up a lot of time and I feel it is the right time for me to bow out.
VIDEO LIBRARY
Some of you have been suggesting that I bring a selection of videos from our library to our monthly PAL member meetings. Now that I am no longer tied up doing the hospitality job at our meetings, I think this would be a great time for me to try out these suggestions. We have a good number of quality art videos, but I believe our li-brary is under-used. Starting with our October 23rd meeting, I plan to bring a couple dozen videos for members to check out if they wish. I‗m hoping you will also take ad-vantage of this process to give me more suggestions for future video purchases.
Just a reminder: The video library is located in the Gig Harbor Visitors‘ Center on Judson St. Just look for the cabinet in the hallway near the back door. A card box with checkout instructions is in the cabinet along with our ninety plus videos. Thanks!
Cecile Anderson
Many thanks to Debbie Dorn who has volunteered to take over as our Hospi-
tality Chair for the coming year. She will be calling on members for contribu-
tions of food for meetings and for assistance with setting up receptions for the
Members‘ Shows—please email her with your offer to help at
[email protected] Thanks!
We still have open positions for Equipment and Publicity!!!!!

Meeting minutes for PAL 23 September 2008
Members present: Myrna Binion, Jon Lonning, Harry Sundberg, Rhene Johns, Charli Meacham, Sherry Weitzel, George Milliken, Arvid Anderson, Christie Camerer, Virginia Alvarez, Cec Anderson, Nan Feagin, Mary McInnis
Myrna Binion called the meeting to order at 10:30am at the Gig Harbor Visitor‘s Center meeting room.
OLD BUSINESS:
Minutes from September were accepted as written. Duly moved and seconded.
Festival Follow-up:
Discussion on finances; Jon reported that we were short on vendors this year so income was down from previous years. We spent less on ads, postage, rack cards, security (having just one officer saved $860). Income is almost even with last year. Myrna stated that this was good but that next year we need to spend monies on what we didn‘t this year (ads, post-age, rack cards, security). Jon stated that Friday night needs three officers not just one. Also, less publicity did not affect attendance as much as loud music affected last year‘s attendance which was not the case this year. Myrna stated that we need to get the vendor mailing list back up and keep it current to provide more vendor possibilities. We need to keep doing the festival. Virginia stated that other shows charge more to enter. Arvid suggested we trade lists with other shows. Myrna said we need more volunteers for next year. Carol wants a replacement for next year, someone to train to take over in 2010. We need a strong committee with strong leader. We have 250 members. Everyone should volunteer for something yearly. We need to stress volunteer as part of membership. We need a coordinator for volunteers.
Jon announced that he is resigning from festival duties. There was discussion of festival chair stipend.
George made a motion to continue the stipend at $2000 for 2008 only. Christy seconded. All in favor – passed. $1000 would be the stipend for NEXT year‘s chair.
Financial Oversight Report from Laura McClintock and Karen Geiger – 2007-08: Three suggestions were made to clarify our bookkeeping:
Have receipts for every item paid for or reimbursed
Deposits should state from where came the money being deposited
Write on the check what the payment is for
It was moved that the report be accepted as read; duly moved and seconded, all in favor.
Slate of Officers for 08-09:
Myrna stated that several positions are still open on roster of officers.
Christy volunteered to email PAL members especially new members to fill open volunteer positions. Publicity is espe-cially necessary. Judy can train someone to take over. George suggested we find someone who is experienced in public-ity and knows the geographic area and media. Myrna stated that we have been inconsistent with thank you‘s to outgoing board members. Arvid moved that an honorarium of $30 be given to outgoing board members. Duly seconded and ap-proved. Christy volunteered to obtain gift certificates. Myrna introduced new PAL board members: Cec Anderson, Nan Feagin, and Mary McInnis
Roster/Membership:
Christy said she is working on the new directory and will try to get it out by the end of the year. Arvid suggested adding another membership category such as ―sustaining member‖ or ―sponsor‖ with varying amounts for dues.
NEW BUSINESS:
Fall Members’ Show -
Rhene said the reception has been rescheduled to November 7th. A correction will be sent out. An Instructor, Marit Berg, from TCC will serve as judge . A screening needs to be scheduled before the show. Reception/hospitality committee needs to get with Rhene. We need all walls at TCC or restrict the size and number of entries.
Minutes continue on next page…...

Regional Show (2009)- Minutes continued from page 8
Nan and Cec: The Fox Island Group will be coordinating the show next year. September is a better month for the show if a workshop is going to be part of it (better weather). The Civic Center has been booked for the show. We can reduce costs by having the reception in the lobby for $50 instead of the room ($100). Custodial costs $50 if Civic Center is not open on weekend. We should be included in the Artwalk and we want to do it for longer period of time perhaps two months. We would save money by having the artists self pick-up instead of using (renting?) the room. Ideas for next year: Use three jurors; should juror be same as workshop teacher? Charli gave information regarding workshops; jurors. Images should be submitted to PAL between June and July; deliver images to juror in July; return of images back from juror to PAL in August in time to notify artists. Karen Knutson from Minneapolis (multi media, watercolor, abstract) was suggested as juror. She requires $450 per diem plus hotel plus $30 food per diem. Any other suggestions? Please no PAL artist as juror. Wait and see who else responds before committing to Knutson. Nan suggests we check out Karen Knutson‘s work and email Charli with opinion and/or suggestions for other possibilities. Nan and Cec have several peo-ple working on publicity and the reception. Suggestions: we send letters to area art teachers inviting them to the show; have the juror write down his thoughts on the submitted work. While it‘s hard to tell if juror is also a good teacher hav-ing more than one juror would spread out the work and would force more objectivity. Discussion also surrounded pick-ing a juror and how many to have and the financial ramifications of having more than one. Myrna felt it is OK to lose money on regional show to keep show going. Discussion about including various media (have a separate photography show?) and increasing the number of prizes. Charli suggested we put something in the newsletter about starting a pho-tography group show.
New Meeting Place:
Peninsula Baptist Church; motion made and duly moved to donate $50 to PBC for use of their facility per meeting.
Gig Harbor Cultural Campus:
Extensive discussion:
We need to get with other art groups and the GH Historical Museum involved to get the cultural art center built in Gig Harbor which would have a multi purpose arts use. An artist‘s rendition was handed out including a floor plan.
Need to get business community involved. Let the city know there is support in Gig Harbor. Cost is estimated at 9.8 million. A newspaper article on the Gig Harbor 2009 budget meeting was passed out.
Museum is enthusiastic about it and willing to take care of operations.
It was reported that there is a lot of support at the rotary meeting.
There will be another meeting in October to discuss the center but it needs better publicity.
Meeting adjourned at 12: 12pm. Respectfully submitted – Mary McInnis

The Artistry of Photography written by Sherry Weitzel
A photographic work of art captures the subject’s distinc-tive essence. The fine art pho-tographer strives to provide an inside view of his visual world, evoking emotions through use of color, setting, and composition. Highly culti-vated skills enable the photog-rapher to “see” and “shoot” an
experience.
Seeing diverse landscapes, hearing the ocean‘s roar, smelling fields of flowers, feeling the warmth of the sun, tasting a blade of grass, the photographer experiences the world using all five senses. Now comes the art of re-creating on paper that which the artist‘s senses embraced at the time the shutter was pressed, photo taken.
Photography is both an art and a science. Photography allows expressions of feelings and emo-tions, but to do so, mastering the scientific part of the medium is essential. A photographer is sepa-rated from his subject by the camera and from his “canvas” by darkrooms, computers, and print-ers.
Photography is a highly technical medium. A mechanical device (the camera) stands between the photographer and his subject; therefore, a number of changes will be introduced by this medium. Nearly all lenses introduce some form of distortion, aberration, blurriness, chromatic aberration, or vigneting. Film, or digital sensors, also introduce a number of changes such as film grain, noise, high or low resolution, pixelization, color shifts, and color casts. The printer replaces the camera as intermediary between the photographer and the image he is about to lay down on pa-per. Printing the image entails a number of changes such as adjusting color gamut and contrast range.
The process of capturing the photograph ends in pressing the shutter, which starts the process for the development of the image based on the mind’s eye of the photographer, whether it is in the darkroom or through digital enhancement. The result is the photographer’s visual expression of his emotional response to the scene he photographed.
