Throughout my visits around town people often ask, “How is Christian Neighbors doing?” My quickresponse most generally is, “extremely busy…but that’s what we’re there for”. In the next few weeks wewill post our statistics showing how many services we have provided in the first nine months of 2012, soplease watch for that.

I remember the day that I used to say, “We are giving out 50 food boxes a month and providing a coupleof thousand of dollars each month preventing homelessness and loss of utilities.” Unfortunately, today Ihave to report, “We are giving out 200 food boxes a month and at least $9,000 a month in emer-gency help.” Many folks are without jobs, working less hours or for much less pay. Needs are great.

When I was pastoring churches full time, peoplewould occasionally say things like “we need to buildfor the future.” While it is true that we need to havea vision for the future, we need to also learn how tolive in the present. The future is now.

Let me explain. I have always found my greatestjoy living in the moment. When I was a child, Ienjoyed being a child. When I was a teen-ager, Ienjoyed being a teen-ager. When I (hopefully)matured into young adulthood, I married a beautifulperson and answered the call to ordained ministry.When we brought our children into the world, Ithought that was the best time in my life.

We started out serving smaller churches, includinga 3-point charge. Those were challenging times, butI enjoyed those younger years of family life andserving churches. I was content to bloom where Iwas planted. The years passed and then somethingwonderful happened; we became grandparents!

Again, while my colleagues were “counting thedays until retirement,” I was determined to work rightup until the eleventh hour. Then retirement came,and I am very much enjoying the “sunset” years ofmy life. Now I am serving two churches part-timeand loving that too.

I think what I am trying to say is plan for the future,pray with the future in mind and prepare for what liesahead, but don’t miss the present moment. I think itwas Mark Twain who told the story about two menwho climbed Pikes Peak to see a beautiful sunset.The following day they were asked how it went. Oneof them said, “I missed the sunset because I waslooking the wrong way!”

Prayer: Dear Lord, I don’t want to be caughtlooking the wrong way when You have somethingbeautiful right in front of my face to behold. Amen.Enjoy the precious moment of praise and worshipthis Sunday in a church where Jesus’ love is lived.

School. She had been employed with Meijer andthen as a ward manager at Bronson MethodistHospital, retiring in 1993. In her leisure time sheenjoyed knitting, crocheting and flowergardening. June was a devout Christian and amember of Doster Church. On October 9, 1952 inKalamazoo she married William ‘Bill’ Ahlberg,who survives. Also surviving are a daughter anda son, Susan (Terry) Revill of Otsego and Rick(Julie) Ahlberg of Kalamazoo; six grandchildren,James (Carol) Kelsey, Andy (Jessie) Kelsey andMichael Kelsey, Mandy (Tim) Johnson, Tory(Katey) Ahlberg and Jon Bontekoe; six great-grandchildren, Hailey, Ethan, Tyler, Mackayla,Nicki and Malanya; two sisters, Jean Soeters ofJackson and Carol (Ken) Hopp of Plainwell;several nieces and nephews. Preceding her indeath were two brothers-in-law, Robert Soeters in2010 and Robert Stamm in 2006. Funeralservices were held Monday, October 1, 2012 at

Winkel Funeral Home, OtsegoPastor Steve Slater officiating. Burial followed atHillside Cemetery, Plainwell. Contributions inmemory of June may be made to Hospice Careof Southwest Michigan.

Patricia passed away Sept. 26th at home with herdaughter, Roxanne, grandson Dale, andgranddaughter Krissy, at her side. She was betterknown as Moose, or Granny Moose by many. Shewas born and spent most of her life in Otsego.She was known as much for her temper as shewas her generosity.When she was still able, therewasn't a garage sale she missed or a rummagesale we didn't stand in line for. She got a twinklein her eye when she found a treasure andsurrounded herself with them. She raised 4children, 1 granddaughter and had a hand inraising many of her grandchildren. The familywould like to thank first of all her devoteddaughter, Roxanne, who took care of Moose formany years, her grandson Larry (Punk) who washer constant companion and caretaker,Roxanne's employer, DCG, for being so patient,Borgess Hospice and Bath Aids and Amber, hergranddaughter-in-law, who helped above andbeyond the call of duty. A special thank you toEast Side Grocery, Toby and employees, for yourgenerous donation, and finally Chaplain Jeff, whogave such a lovely eulogy and theCongregational Church.

Ruimveld, Michelle Lewis, Will Lewis, ChelseaLewis; two step children, Samantha & JoshReese; his mother, Clara Lester; four sisters,Sharon Lobar, Sue (Ed) Richard, Lori (Norm)Post, Karen (Gordon) Helms; four grandchildren,two aunts & several nieces; nephews & cousins.

He was an avid biker & a member of the RedArrow Riders. He loved hunting & fishing. Heloved to be with his many friends and was alwayswilling to help anyone anyway possible.

Preceding him in death was his father, RobertP. Lewis & his step father, Fritz Lester.

Cremation has taken place. A memorial servicewill be held on October 6, 3pm-7pm at the GunPlain Township Hall.

In keeping with her wishescremation has taken place and a private burial ofashes will take place later at Mountain HomeCemetery, Otsego.
