Mid-October is only a week away, as is Part 1 of “Margaret Cottam,” a new Sampler Club from La-D-Da

Charland Designs are both used to complete the

adorable ornament that Charland designed for the 2011 Just CrossStitch Christmas Ornaments issue. And this week I have a scan of the ornament using both of these special items. As you can see, the hornbook has sweet hand-painted holly on the reverse side of where your stitched piece is attached, along with it being signed and dated by Charland herself.

Margaret stitched her sampler at the age of 9 in 1807, and now, more than 200 years later, thanks to Lori Markovic of La-D-Da, thousands of young ladies worldwide will be stitching this charming sampler together! But we will have so many advantages that weren’t available to Margaret: hand-dyed linens, hand-dyed threads, both silks and cottons, and lights and magnification to help us re-create Margaret’s sampler.

The photo at the left shows the complimentary pincushion design

included for each Club member. Notice the whimsical design, which includes the symbols used in the sampler charting! The colors remind me of Autumn, my favorite Season of the year! The 3 patterns, each $8, will be available in mid-month beginning with October. Sampler design size is 170w x 200h; the model is stitched on Weeks’ 30c Cocoa with 8 colors of Weeks floss (10 skeins needed). Of course we will be doing a conversion to silk overdyes as soon as we learn the color palette. We will also be offering linen choices in Weeks 35/40c and Lakeside’s 32/36/40c. We are offering 3 linen cuts: 30/32c - 17.5 x 19.5; 35/36c - 15.5 x 17.5; 40c - 13.5 x 16. Our order has been placed based on the reservations we’ve received. Please understand that there may be a slight delay for materials for orders still to come.

Above: “Elizabeth Russell - 1719” ($73 35c w/silk), a charming small American sampler stitched using marking cross, eyelet over 2 threads, double back, queen, algerian eye, cross over one, and flame stitch, with the bottom worked in freehand, made very easy to do with a drawn-to-scale diagram to be traced onto the linen; right, “Elisabeth Oberholtzerin-1817” ($150 35c w/silk), a beautiful Pennsylvania sampler stitched by Elisabeth in needlework school that features Quaker and Germanic motifs.

Above left, “Ruthy Rogers” $28, reproduced from NY’s American Folk Art Museum. Marsha was stitching this when I visited her in June. The chart contains wonderful information about the Marblehead samplers as well as about Ruthy. Stitches in Ruthy’s sampler are cross, stem filling, Queen, outline, and counted satin; on 35c linen, the size will be 9.5 x 13.5. Above right, “Janet Burnet June 1830” $24, a Scottish sampler with its traditional color scheme; stitches include Queen, double running, four-sided, back, counted satin filling, cross, Algerian eyelet, and cross over one.

Above left, “My Story” $18, a sampler, as Jeannette says, to treasure for stitchers who enjoy the journey as much or more than the destination ~ I LOVE this beautiful design, and Jeannette said it was such a pleasure to design that somehow she just wasn’t finished when she was done, so she wrote a simple poem and built a needlebook to match called “My Storybook” $18. The needlebook opens to hold several pairs of scissors (who has just one pair?!), has a tiny pincushion and needleholder inside, and the twisted cord has a wonderful batch of charms on its end, depicting fun things we love. The poem: “This I have worked for you to see My work, my life, a sampling of me.” There are special-order embellishment packs for “My Story” ($60) with silks and charms and 2 embellishment packs for “My Storybook,” one ($46) with the silks and several charms and the other ($24) with the pearl cotton and charms and jump rings for the cording and charm “tassel.” The only way I’ll get to stitch this is if we offer it as a class. If anyone else is as charmed by this design as I am, let me know and we’ll schedule a class. Both designs feature a number of specialty stitches (Queen, Hungarian/Gobelin combination, Algerian eyelets, herringbone, Milanese, leaf stitch, tied Hungarian, Rhodes, diamond filling, and more!)
