    The Rhome Volunteer Fire De-artment haunted house marks its

    ourth year this Halloween and ex-ects a big crowd Saturday.This year, the Rhome Volunteer

    Fire Department Brigade has cre-ted a haunted orphanage in theormer school building that houseshe fire department and also has aaze in the building.Performers in the haunted house

    nclude firefighters and elementa-y students up through high schooltudents. Students from Jennifer

    Peeks science class at Alvord HighSchool make up the bulk of the

    erformers. Peek lives in Rhomend her husband is a volunteer fireghter.They do an awesome job. Theyeserve props for everythingheyve done, said Judy Weyandith the Brigade. All the sur-

    ounding communities have comeut and helped out a lot.

    Weyand recommends the haunt-d house for ages 6 and up, al-hough individual children mayeact to the house differently.he Brigade has set up an areaor younger children while theiruardians go through the hauntedouse.The haunted house is open fromto 11 p.m. Friday and 7 to about

    idnight Saturday. Admission is

    $7 and all proceeds go to the firedepartment.

    The Rhome Parks and Recreation

    Committee sells concessions atthe haunted house, with proceeds

    benefiting parks and recreation.

    The haunted house is located at105 W. First Street in Rhome.

    29, as they honor their athletic teams and seniors. The celebration willinclude a parade and pep rally and fireworks show at NISD Stadium.The parade will begin at 6:30 p.m. and will follow along Texan Drivefrom Northwest High School to NISD Stadium. Texan Drive will beclosed to traffic until the parade has ended. The community pep rallywill follow in the stadium, and the fireworks show will begin at approxi-mately 8 p.m. Originally scheduled as part of the schools Homecomingfestivities in September, the parade, pep rally and fireworks show waspostponed due to inclement weather.

    The Northwest ISD Education Foundation (NEF)icked-off a year of fundraising on Sept. 18 in anffort to support the students and staff of North-est ISD. Area businesses, community membersnd NEF board turned out to support the causet the annual kick-off luncheon, during which leadonors were recognized for a combined contribu-ion of $188,965.Leading the way was a record-setting donation

    rom the staff of Northwest ISD for $59,015. With donations still funneling in from districtmployees, the combined staff donation contin-es to rise and could soon reach $60,000.Fifty lead donors were recognized, including

    ects.With a goal of $400,000, the NEF will continue

    undraising efforts through June 2010.The Northwest ISD Education Foundation is a

    ence degree in gerontology from Stephen F. Austin State Univer-sity in Nacogdoches at August commencement.

    FFA members at Northwest High School will seek canned fooinstead of candy this Halloween. For the past five years, the North-west High School FFA has conducted a Trick or Treat for cannegoods food drive. FFA members will collect donations from areahomes Oct. 29 and 30.

    We have seen this event grow each year, from just a few hun-dred cans to the more than 4,000 pounds of food donated in 2008,said FFA sponsor Kevin Deal. We would like to thank all the NISDpatrons for their donations the past five years. Their continuesupport is appreciated.

    Northwest FFA members will distribute collection bags to asmany homes as possible the week of Oct. 26-30. All of the col-lected food will be donated to surrounding food pantries.

    FFA members will be collecting donations on Oct. 29 and 30. I

    you are interested in participating and will not be at home thatevening, or do not wish to be disturbed, please leave your dona-tion by your front door.
