Remembering and Praying for the Faithful Departed

The practice of praying for the dead is rooted first in Christian belief in eternal life that come from Jesus’ teachings and are foreshadowed in the disciples experience that Jesus had risen from the dead. Although we are separated from our earthly body at death, our relationship with God transcends death itself.

Praying for the dead has further origins in our belief in the Communion of the Saints. Living members of this community often pray and intercede for each other by prayers and through spiritual support. The faithful de-parted continue to be members of the Body of Christ, of the Communion of all the baptized. We believe that as human beings we need of God’s mercy and forgiveness and after death there will be a process or period of purification. We continue to aid our brothers and sisters with our prayers and ask them to help us with theirs.

Prayers for those who have died often begin at the bedside with family members. In many places it is custom-ary to meet and pray for nine days or a novena. The Order of Christian Funerals has a Vigil Service, Funeral Mass and Rite of Committal. We remember them with Masses on special occasions throughout the year or on the anniversary of their death. At every Eucharist we remember those who have died and ask God to be merci-ful and remove any barriers that might keep them from entering into eternal peace and life.

PARISH CALENDAR

28 Oct. Sunday, Children’s Liturgy 10 am & 8:30 pm SJC

4 Nov. Sunday, World Youth Day 3 (Morial Convention Ctr.)

THE HOPE AND PROMISE OF REDEMPTION The servant of God, Jeremiah prophesies the end of the Baby-lonian exile. He describes how the weak and sorrowful people now return with joy. These are the scattered people of God: the blind and the lame, the mothers and pregnant women. They shall be led along an easy road so that no one will stumble. The Lord’s kindness and mercy are on all these weak and broken people. Here and in Psalm 126 we find the most lovely poetic im-ages of God’s love and care for us. “Those that sow in tears / shall reap rejoicing. Although they go forth weeping, / carrying the seed to be sown, / they shall come back rejoicing, / carrying their sheaves” (Psalm 126:5–6). Although was punished for their many sins, God never forgot them, scattered as they were, and brings them all back to the land of their ancestors, there to flour-ish and be joyful again. We can see in this the hope and the promise of our own redemption, gathered from the far corners of the earth into the great banquet of God.
