In the next few months, we will celebrate civil and
religious holidays that highlight the family and have an
impact on our children. Whether we are carving pumpkins,
preparing the turkey or decorating for Christmas, we enjoy it
more when there are young ones present. We are doing
more than celebrating; we are passing on traditions. And
they are learning from our example.
Since so much of what we do over the next few months
comes directly from our hearts, perhaps there is invitation for
us to look deeper into our celebrations so that what we do
builds our families.
Blessed Pope John Paul II designated 1994 as the "Year
of the Family." To honor the family, the Pontiff wrote a letter
to every family on earth. It was published in the Pittsburgh
Catholic. In the following excerpt, he discovered a unique
twist to the Fourth Commandment. Blessed John Paul II
writes of honor due to children from their parents:
"Indirectly we can speak of honor owed to children by
their parents.' To honor means to acknowledge! Honor is
essentially an attitude of unselfishness. If the Fourth
Commandment demands that honor should be shown to our
father and mother, it also makes this demand out of concern
for the good of the family. Precisely for this reason, however,
it makes demands of the parents themselves. You parents,
the Divine precept seems to say, should act in such a way
that your life will merit the honor (and love) of your children!
Ultimately, then, we are speaking of mutual honor. The
Commandment 'honor your father and mother' indirectly tells
parents: Honor your sons and daughters. They deserve this
because they are alive, because they are who they are..."
"To honor someone," according to Pope John Paul II,
means "to acknowledge them." As we prepare for the festive
months ahead, perhaps we can reflect on ways that we may
acknowledge each other for the purpose of calling forth the
virtues we cherish most– the very things that please God.
Lord God, from you every family in heaven and on earth
takes its name. Father, you are Love and life. Through your
Son, Jesus Christ, born of woman, and through the Holy
Spirit, fountain of divine charity, grant that every family on
earth may become for each successive generation a true
shrine of life and love.
Grant that your grace may guide the thoughts and
actions of husbands and wives for the good of their families
and of all the families in the world. Grant that the young may
find in the family solid support for their human dignity and for
their growth in truth and love. Grant that love, strengthened
by the grace of the sacrament of marriage, may prove
mightier than all the weakness and trials through which our
families sometimes pass.
Through the intercession of the Holy Family of Nazareth,
grant that the Church may fruitfully carry out her worldwide
mission in the family and through the family. Through Christ
our Lord, who is the Way, the Truth and the Life for ever and
ever. Amen.
