Abundant Blessing

service and sacrifice
Commitment Sunday
This weekend is Commitment Sunday, the culmination of our inaugural Stewardship Series. Over the past several weeks, we hope that you have enjoyed sharing your blessings on the Blessing Tree, learning about the faith formation and service opportunities at St. Boniface, and listening to your fellow parishioners share their experiences of how their faith lives have been changed through their commitments and participation. Now it’s time for all of us to consider how we might make a difference in our parish during the coming year. Whether you are making a new commitment to become more involved in our parish family and community service or recommitting to an activity that you have supported for years, we invite you to share those commitments on the forms provided next week. These are not pledge forms or promissory notes, they are simply a way for our parish to support one another in carrying out God’s work here at St. Boniface.
Here are some questions to incorporate into your prayers that might help you discern God’s calling around your spirituality, service and sacrifice:
• Do I devote time outside of Sunday Mass to learn more about my faith or enhance my relationship with God?
• How may I expand my participation in parish life and further assist those in need in our community through volunteerism?
• Have I planned for my financial gifts to the parish and are they an appropriate response to God’s generosity in my life?
Thank you in advance for your participation in this year’s Commitment Sunday. We look forward to sharing the results with you soon.
May God bless you! St. Boniface Stewardship Council

Strategic Planning
Now that the new building is open, Father McGivney's school board is undergoing a strategic planning process to review where we are today, where we'd like to be in the future, and how best to get there.
The first of three public meetings (for parents, prospective parents, interested community members, and faculty/staff) will be held on Monday, November 2, at 7 PM in McGivney's gymnasium. The public is invited to give feedback on the proposed strategic planning process (and to tour the new building if you haven't yet had the opportunity).
In addition, we'd love for any retirees/seniors, "at home" parents, or those that may have some time to donate during the day to do some specific research for us in this process. If you are interested in attending on 11/2 at 7 PM please RSVP by using the form found at: http://goo.gl/forms/Ss51xFs7ix so we can plan accordingly for this kickoff meeting. If you have any questions regarding the meeting, please email [email protected].

MINISTRY MINUTES
Reflection ~ Robin Black-Rubenstein
Do you remember a time in your life when you were excited because the telephone rang? When I was in high school my sister and I would race to
see who could answer the telephone first. If I won and reached the baby blue receiver, first there was usually a scowl or disparaging look from my sister, maybe even a little shove. If she won the race I usually returned the favor. I really can’t imagine being that excited about a phone call now, unless it was the birth of a new child in the family or some other good news I was expecting. Our technology has given us the option of deciding if we want to take a call. That can be helpful because anyone for any reason can call us no matter where we are. But it can also tempt us to put off a conversation that is needed. We also might lose site of the need of the other person who is calling simply because we don’t want to be bothered. In the Gospel, Bartimaus threw aside his cloak and sprang up when Jesus called on him. He did not hesitate. There are times in our lives when we see or hear something that calls us to pay attention. Maybe it is the way the stars look next to the moon one night or the glow of the sun inbetween the trees. God’s call is not always as direct as what Bartimaus experienced. Sacred moments don’t usually happen when we are expecting them. But if we pay attention, God is calling all of us to sacred conversations and the opportunity to follow Jesus.
Closing of the Synod on Marriage
This column will be published in our bulletin on the closing day of the Synod on Marriage (10/25/15). For the last three weeks over 250 bishops have been meeting at the Vatican to focus on the Church’s ministry to families. In the words of Pope Francis they were gathered “to find concrete solutions to so many difficulties and innumerable challenges that families must confront; to give answers to the many discouragements that surround and suffocate families.”
Gerald O’Connell, who is America magazine’s Rome correspondent, wrote an article for the October 5th edition of America that summarized the two opposing viewpoints that the bishops from the western countries of the Northern Hemisphere brought to the synod. One viewpoint was that the primary pastoral responsibility of our Church is to convey, with unwavering fidelity, the doctrinal teachings of our Church on marriage and do so even if it risks alienating many persons and having them leave our Church. The other viewpoint is that this strict approach imprisons the pastoral outreach of the Church within such narrow limits that it is cut off from the realities of marriage and family life as they exist in the world today.
The article did not discuss the fact that bishops from the countries of the Southern Hemisphere would come into the synod with equally pressing but different concerns on how the existence and nurturing of families is being challenged in their dioceses and in their countries. I think that the Holy Spirit must have been very busy guiding the deliberations of the synod.
The synod’s recommendations will be sent to our Holy Father for his study and ultimately any changes in our Church’s approach to marriage will come from his decisions. It has taken fifty years for the changes of Vatican II to mature and be accepted in our Church and the deliberations of this most recent synod, whatever the outcomes, may take quite a while to be implemented in our Church.
Let us trust the Holy Spirit enough to offer thanks that the Spirit was present to guide the synod and to request the Spirit’s continuing presence in guiding our Holy Father on these very important issues about marriage.

The First Reading from Jeremiah echoes the well-known 23rd Psalm, “The Lord is my Shepherd.” We hear about the Messiah delivering His people and leading them “to brooks of water on a level road.” God will provide for His people. He will strengthen them for the journey, and even those who find it difficult to travel (“with the lame and the blind in their midst”) will be able to succeed with the assistance of the Lord. We know that our trust in God is paramount to be able to serve Him and others properly. Of course, we must have faith to do these things; we find our strength in faith in God.

October is Respect Life Month Heavenly Father, from the smallest cell to the largest creature, you are the origin and creator of all life. May we be so in awe of your wondrous power that we never take for granted the wonder of life, the beauty of creation or the potential of every person. We recognize the value and worth of human life, from conception to natural death. Help us to protect and nurture all life so that in perfect harmony we may offer to you a fitting song of living praise. We ask this through Jesus, your Son, who lives and
reigns forever. Amen. ~Rev. James Gaffney
