Colby Parsons O’Keefestarted planning for thelatest exhibition at Texas
Woman’s University, “Point ofDeparture,” with a question.
“If someone’s trained in clayand they use a different medi-um, do they use that mediumdifferently because they weretrained in clay?” O’Keefe won-dered.
O’Keefe is a TWU art profes-sor, and a ceramist by training. He worked with artist ShannonGoff — who lent some of hercardboard works to the exhibit— to put together an exhibit ofwork by women who havetraining in ceramics, but havefollowed artistic tangents.
“I’ve just seen in all fields ofart [that] people are diversify-ing a lot, and there aren’tboundaries between the mediamuch any more,” O’Keefe said.“And this is something that ishappening in my own work.Sometimes, when you’re out inthe field looking around atwhat artists are doing, you startthinking of a lot of questions.”
Exhibits don’t need to answerthose questions, O’Keefe said, but “Point of Departure” opensthe door to think and talk abouthow media inform artists andtheir art.
Los Angeles artist JulieSchustack, who has two piecesin the exhibit, said all of herwork is functional, and ceramicsgenerally make up 20 percent to30 percent of her material.
“I think my approach tousing clay is that it’s there for areason. There are two piecesI’ve finished recently. One ofthem was a sink, and just to beobnoxious and poke fun at it, Itiled the sink and tiled two-by-fours with these ceramic tiles. The piece is a gravity sink thatrolls, that you could move any-where and use it, but I just hadto put these pink ceramic tileson it.”
Schustack also created apiece called Hearing Aid, anobject that looks like it startedout being a set of high-endheadphones, but turned into a
head-mounted set of cones thatwork like the 19th century eartrumpet. Schustack said shewas making a lot of cones, influenced by Thomas Edison’sclay cones used most often forrecord players. She picked oneup and put it to her ear andsaid she was surprised that shecould hear so many sounds.
“I really like when my workgets more absurd,” Schustacksaid. “This piece was an absurd,problem-solving thing. It’s justobnoxious to think about allthese people walking aroundwith these on their heads. Also, both my parents have these dis-abilities — there probably is aconnection to that.”
Goff and Schustack share thegallery with Julia Haft-Candell,Melissa Mytty, Toril Redalen,Debbie Reichard, MadelineStillwell and Elenor Wilson.
The exhibition runs throughNov. 11 in the East and West
galleries in the TWU ArtBuilding, located at OaklandStreet and Pioneer Circle.Gallery hours are 9 a.m. to 4p.m. Monday through Friday.Admission is free.

LuminArte is part of theDallas Arts District, butcome this weekend, the
Levee Street gallery will be allabout Denton.
“Denton Rising Artists”opens at 7 p.m. Saturday at thegallery, and when it does, artdirector and Denton residentChristian Millet said, Dallas artbuffs will see some up-and-coming artists who deservetheir attention.
“The whole intention withthis artist show is that we’retrying to promote Dentonartists to Dallas,” said Millet, anartist himself who has paint-ings on display at JupiterHouse on the downtownSquare. “The gallery is showingart pretty much from every-where. But there are a lot ofartists in Denton, because ofthe universities, who are doinggood work and getting recog-nized on an international level. But there aren’t that many real-ly good venues for them toshow their work.”
Millet said LuminArte hasexhibited work by Dentonartist and UNT graduate MattAnzak, who has gallery repre-sentation in the United States,Paris and Rome. Millet said
Anzak is in good company inDenton, and LuminArte wantsto make room for his award-winning peers.
The gallery reached out tospecific Denton artists to be inthe exhibition. Millet said heworked to make the exhibitbroad in terms of style.
“We didn’t want to createcompetition between the art-ists,” he said. “We wanted theexhibit to be done so that whenyou look at two pieces, one nextto the other, they don’t look thesame.”
Participating artists areMargaret Anna Eliot, SavannahNiles, Hilari Oller, John Finn,Carl Bajandas, Rachelle Blosser,
Elizabeth Hurtado, AugustineCordero, Jon Orbock, RitaChildress, Adam Burkett andAndrew Jonathan. MichaelBales, the 2008 Huntington ArtPrize finalist, has work in theexhibit, and UNT art professorJennifer Leigh Jones, who wasnamed among the new “DallasNine” artists in D magazine, haswork in the show.

Mixed lyrical speakingand screaming on abackdrop of ’90s
punk-rock instrumentationdelivers the kind of punchJapan’s Envy has becomeknown for.
The group doesn’t hold any-thing back and delivers thekind of angst-filled energy sureto cause the blissful death-by-
whiplash that fans of hard-coreseem to yearn for.
While the quintet’s lyrics arein Japanese, there is no doubtthey convey a universal sense ofanguish. Not all of Envy’ssound relies on ear-shatteringvocals, though; they also deliv-
er through tempered poeticrecitations.
There’s no doubt the groupsuccessfully employs a diverseset of approaches in theirsongs. Gentle, almost soothingintros can change on a dime. That being said, even the raspy, earsplitting vocals are some-times delivered in a subduedmanner, encouraging a sort ofmelancholy mosh pit unlikelyto be heard anywhere else.

Prophet mixes the sounds ofclassical rock with lyrics that, while cynical at times, havesomething to say about the

Mexico, or maybe because of it,Prophet manages to mix inplenty of criticism in what hecalls “a political album for non-political people.”
Prophet brings the sounds of
classic, ’60s rock ’n’ roll backinto the limelight with con-temporary lyrics touching oneverything from immigrationand economics to the verynature of the AmericanDream.

The only disappointingaspect to a perform-ance by the Brooklyn-
based trio Callers is that itcomes to an end.
There is something in thestylings of Sara Lucas, RyanSeaton and Don Godwinthat shuts out the rest of theworld and focuses listenerson the haunting, melancholytunes fitting a world farremoved from ours.
There isn’t anything par-ticularly experimental oralien in their work, but thequiet currents rollingthrough each song grab atthe guts in ways that chal-lenge the audience not to pay
careful attention. The group has roots in
New Orleans, where themembers originally met, andthe influence is obvious.
Listening to them, it’shard not to conjure upimages of the steady, subtlepower of the Mississippi — adriving power that is bothserene and dangerous at thesame time.

Denton Time put thisquestion to a pair oflocal hip-hop artists:
So, what’s the differencebetween rap and hip-hop?
Short answer: Rap manu-factures hyper-masculine pos-tures in outrageously egotisti-cal rhymes set to beats another(probably better) musicianpioneered. Hip-hop throwsbeats and hooks just as fastand furiously as rap does, butat its heart, hip-hop is drivenby an idea. A story. A poem.
Denton’s Fab Deuce, whichplays a fifth anniversary showSaturday night at Hailey’s, canbring as much heat as it needsto back up its claim to belongin the hip-hop camp.
Fab Deuce is made up ofbrothers Pudge and BlaineBrewer and A. Arnold (knownon stage as Pudgy B, Blaineand Simple, and L.O.N.E.). Thetrio was born out of the halls ofDenton High School five yearsago. The three-piece released
Deuce Knuckle, a slick, 14-trackrecord (not counting the introthat leads into the album) thatstarts out with a mellow, feel-good vibe, builds up to“Monster” and ends with athoroughly chilled-out, funkynote on “Music.” (Think WillSmith’s “Summertime” withlyrics that maxed the vocabu-lary section of the SATs.)
Fab Deuce is a product ofthe scene that spun Vortexasand Infidelix, a scene PudgeBrewer said is open, friendlyand prone to collaborating, inmaking music and promotingDenton hip-hop.
“I feel like Fab Deuce hasthe party sound down reallywell,” Brewer said. “Our partysound is probably what bringspeople to our shows. And we’retalking about all differentkinds of people.
“When we do a show, we
want people to be able to for-get about everything and havea good time.”
Even if Fab Deuce didn’tboast a Denton identity, thelyrics betray the city’s multi-ethnic, multicultural quirks. The trio’s lyrics mention shar-ing a smoke with hippies,Ph.D.s, and knowing someoneon every block. If you’re usedto the chest-thumping, soft-core stuff of Top 40 hip-hop,Fab Deuce will seem nearlyerudite.
Where does Fab Duece blurthe line between rap and hip-hop? The trio vends infectiousbeats and samples splicedtogether with smart musicalcomposition.

Dead men talking Murky ‘Hereafter’bogged down byweighty narrative
By Boo AllenFilm Critic
Skeptics and scoffers willfind Hereafter the funniest filmof the year. Others, however, might simply yawn at its pre-tentious cravings, funereal paceand murky intentions.
Peter Morgan wroteHereafter, departing from hisusual dissection of exalted fig-ures, as in his The Queen andFrost/Nixon. Clint Eastwooddirects what would not seem anunlikely subject for someonewho, at 80, might hear the roarof time’s winged chariot.
But any acceptance ofHereafter depends greatly onan acceptance of not only theparanormal but also of mosteverything that comes with it:having a two-way conversationwith the dead, being able touncover personal secrets byholding someone’s hand, and,of course, a healthy afterlife inwhich all is forgiven and all
secrets are explained. In Morgan’s tale, three sto-
ries play out across three coun-tries, until awkwardly broughttogether for an embarrassinglytidy Hollywood ending.
George (Matt Damon) hasthe “gift” of channeling deadspirits, enabling the living totalk to their beloved departed. But it has unnerved him, driv-ing him from a lucrative profes-sion despite the mercenarypleadings of his brother (JayMohr). So, he lives in isolatedobscurity in San Francisco.
French journalist Marie(Cecile De France) is sweptaway in a tsunami while in
Asia. Seemingly drowned, sherevives but soon begins to havevisions that continue to haunther after she returns to Paris. She eventually leaves her jobto devote time to researchingand writing a book about thegray area of near-death experi-ences.
In London, two inseparableyoung twin brothers (Frankieand George McLaren) struggleto maintain their family despitea drug-addicted mother. Whenone brother dies accidentallyand the mother enters rehab, the surviving brother embarkson a quest to be able to com-municate with his dead sibling,an effort that results in bring-ing the film’s three protagonistsfinally together.
Eastwood avoids religiouselements, or a compelling nar-rative, and instead concen-trates his highest dramas onbrief moments, such as the per-ceived circumstances in which
a person approaches death andconjures up images of whatRabelais called the “GreatPerhaps.”
These bright lights andvaguely human figures providethe few brief visual momentsallowed by Eastwood and hisfrequent cinematographer TomStern (no slaves to composition-al niceties or clarity in lighting).Elsewhere, the gloomy atmos-pherics drain any remainingenergy from the seeminglypointless narrative.
Damon sleepwalks throughhis role as a tortured soul, andDe France barely registers.Young Frankie and GeorgeMcLaren, however, possess andmaintain appropriately blankexpressions that fit in here —or, perhaps, in another, betterfilm.

OPENING FRIDAYConviction () Hilary Swank
offers a strong portrayal in this true-
life drama about Betty Anne Waters,
a high school dropout who puts her-
self through college and law school
for the sole purpose of exonerating
her brother (Sam Rockwell), who she
feels was wrongly accused of a mur-
der for which he is serving a life sen-
tence. While it lacks much insight
into the legal system that plays such
an integral role, the film compen-
sates with having the same grit and
determination as its heroine. Rated R,
107 minutes. At the Magnolia. —
Todd Jorgenson
Howl () Documentary film-
makers Rob Epstein and Jeffrey
Friedman use their narrative skills to
mix the dramatics of the publication
of and resulting obscenity trial of
Allen Ginsberg for his poem Howl,
while Ginsberg (James Franco) recites
the poem and frolics in flashbacks
with his Beat poet friends. At the trial,
San Francisco District Attorney Ralph
McIntosh (David Strathairn) prosecut-
ed the case and Jake Ehrlich (Jon
Hamm) defended. Beautifully ren-
dered evocation of time, place and
mindset. Not rated, 90 minutes. At
the Angelika Dallas. — Boo Allen
Paranormal Activity 2 In the
sequel to last year’s Paranormal
Activity, a family sets up security
cameras around their home to find
out more about a rash of break-ins,
only to realize that the events unfold-
ing before them are more sinister
than they seem. Rated R, 91 minutes.
Soul Kitchen () This modestly
amusing German comedy is a de-
lightful change of pace for Turkish
filmmaker Fatih Akin (The Edge of
Heaven). It follows the struggles of a
Greek chef (Adam Bousdoukos) to
keep his Hamburg restaurant afloat,
from his hiring of an eccentric new
chef to a former classmate trying to
trick him into selling the property.
There’s nothing especially deep or
profound here, but Akin shows his
versatility with a breezy and appeal-
ing character-driven comedy. Not
rated, 99 minutes. At the Angelika
Dallas. — T.J.
NOW PLAYINGRed () Formulaic action comedy
with Bruce Willis as an ex-CIA agent
who is RED — retired, extremely dan-
gerous. He abducts a woman (Mary-
Louis Parker) and then gathers
together his old team (Morgan
Freeman, John Malkovich, Brian Cox,
Helen Mirren) for the cliched “one
last job.” Rated PG-13, 111 minutes.
— B.A.
The Social Network () In a
case of better-than-it-sounds, David
Fincher directs from a script by
Aaron Sorkin about the creation of
Facebook. Jesse Eisenberg stars as
the Harvard undergraduate who
wants to expand his social life and
ends up creating the world’s fore-
most social networking website,
making millions and being sued by
everyone he considered a friend.
Fast, funny, clever and well done.
Rated PG-13, 121 minutes. — B.A.

Tony Bennett hasn’t let a few birthdaysstop him. At 84 years old, the pop andjazz singer still maintains a swinging
style, making great music and touring thecountry, with a stop Saturday at WinStarWorld Casino in Oklahoma.
What’s remarkable is that Bennett is aspopular today as ever. His songs have be-come standards; his concerts sell out. Hisrecords have sold many millions — and themusic is timeless, so it touches millionsmore. “I’m doing what I love the most,” hesays. And it shows.
How do you sum up the accomplishmentsof a man’s life? You don’t. You let him speakfor himself.

Bennett: I think one of the thingsthat touched me the most was duringthe Vietnam War, I had read a storyabout a group of soldiers who wereheaded home and were all togetherand just started to spontaneouslysing, “I Left My Heart in SanFrancisco.” I still remember readingthat article and feeling very honoredthat those soldiers thought of mysong as they planned to return home.
So many have influenced you,and you have, in turn, inspired somany. Who continues to inspireyou and why?
I am still inspired by the great mas-ters — both in music and in art —
Ella Fitzgerald, Duke Ellington, FrankSinatra and Rembrandt, Michel-angelo, Da Vinci. Genius lasts forever, and they continue to inspire genera-tions throughout the years.
Remarkably at 84 years old, yourvoice is as strong as ever. Do you doanything special to take care of it?Or yourself?
Well, I do like pasta since I amItalian, but I try not to overeat, and Ihave been playing tennis to keep inshape for many years. I also think apositive attitude about life is one ofthe best ways to take care of yourselfand reduce stress — stress is a killer.
What keeps you young? My Maltese dog, Happy — she is
full of energy!
Do you prefer the spontaneity oflive performance or the controlthat comes with studio recording?
When I started recording back inthe 1950s it all was live, and that isthe only way I know how to perform. So even when I am in the studio, Ihave my quartet right in the sameroom with me and we keep therecording process as live as possible. Ilike the spontaneity of live perform-ance and it’s one of the reasons why Itour with jazz musicians, as everynight on stage it’s always a little dif-ferent.
How do you keep fresh the musicyou’ve sung for years?
Well, again, I think a large part of

that is a result of working withjazz musicians while I am ontour. We have the flexibility tochange arrangements andtempos around even duringthe show itself so it keeps theperformances “in themoment,” which is more excit-ing for us and the audience. Also, I still get “butterflies”going out on stage every night;[Frank] Sinatra told me oncethat this is a good thingbecause it shows that you careand you want things to turnout right. I still feel that wayand I never want to disrespectthe audience by not puttingeverything I have into a songor a performance.
Tell us about AnthonyBenedetto, the artist.
I began drawing with chalkon the sidewalks of my home-town in Astoria, Queens, andhave been drawing ever since. When I was in high school —at the School of Industrial Artsin Manhattan — I studied allthe graphic arts and learned alot about technique.
Later on, Duke Ellingtontold me it was better to do twocreative outlets, not just one,so I really put an emphasis onthe painting and began toshow my work in galleries. Ihave been painting or sketch-ing pretty much every daysince I was able to hold a pen-cil — it’s something I have to
do, not just like to do.
You’ve said many timesyou have no intention ofretiring. So what’s next forTony Bennett?
I get asked all the time if Iwill retire and I usually say,“Retire to what? I am doingwhat I love the most and itfeels like I never had to work a
day in my life.” I have so manyideas for new projects — I justhope I have the time to getthem all done. And we havesome big plans for my 85thbirthday next year, but I can’ttell you yet what they are!
